Optical Design of OPTICAM-ARG: A Three-Channel High-Time-Resolution Camera for the Jorge Sahade Telescope

We present the optical design of OPTICAM-ARG, a multi-channel instrument for the simultaneous acquisition of images in three spectral bands at the Cassegrain focus of an f/8.5 telescope, covering the 0.35 to 1.00 um wavelength range. The converging beam delivered by the telescope is spectrally separated by two dichroics into three channels, blue, green, and red, each incorporating a dedicated three-lens focal reducer, an interchangeable SDSS filter stage, and an sCMOS detector. The focal reducers establish an effective focal length of approximately 9.1 m, a uniform plate scale of 22.6 arcsec/mm, and a field of view of 8.4 arcmin x 8.4 arcmin per channel, consistent with the typical seeing conditions at the site. Operation of the dichroics in a converging beam introduces off-axis aberrations, which are mitigated through wedge angles applied to their second surface and optimized as part of the global design. Optical performance is assessed through exact ray tracing using RMS spot radii and encircled energy metrics, with EE50 values further expressed in terms of an equivalent FWHM to enable direct comparison with atmospheric seeing and to evaluate sensitivity to manufacturing tolerances.

SN 2024ggi: another year, another striking Type II supernova

SN 2024ggi is a Type II supernova that exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3621 at a distance of approximately 7 Mpc, making it one of the closest supernovae of the decade. This SN shows clear signs of interaction with a dense circumstellar material, and several studies have investigated the properties of its possible progenitor star using pre-explosion data. In this work we aim to constrain the progenitor properties of SN 2024ggi by performing hydrodynamical modeling of its bolometric light curve and expansion velocities. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2024ggi obtained in the Complejo Astron\'omico El Leoncito, in Las Campanas Observatory, and in Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network, spanning from 2 to 106 days after explosion. We constructed its bolometric light curve and we characterize it by calculating its morphological parameters. Then, we computed a grid of one dimensional explosion models for evolved stars with varying masses and estimated the properties of the progenitor star of SN 2024ggi by comparing the models to the observations. The observed bolometric luminosity and expansion velocities are well-matched by a model involving the explosion of a star in the presence of a close circumstellar material (CSM), with a zero-age main sequence mass of $\mathrm{M_{ZAMS}}$ = 15 $M_{\odot}$, a pre-SN mass and radius of 14.1 $M_{\odot}$ and 517 $R_{\odot}$, respectively, an explosion energy of $1.3\times10^{51}$ erg, and a nickel mass below 0.035 $M_{\odot}$. Our analysis suggests that the progenitor suffered a mass-loss rate of $4 \times 10^{-3}$ $M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, confined to a distance of 3000 $R_{\odot}$. The CSM distribution is likely a two-component structure that consists of a compact core and an extended tail. This analysis represents the first hydrodynamical model of SN 2024ggi with a complete coverage of the plateau phase.

Optical monitoring in southern blazars. Analysis of variability and spectral colour behaviours

We present the results of the optical monitoring of 18 southern blazars in the V and R Johnson-Cousins bands. Our main objective is to study the variations in the optical flux and theis relationship with the colour and spectral variabilities. The optical observations were acquired with the 2.15 m "Jorge Sahade" telescope, CASLEO, Argentina.The whole campaign comprised from 2014 April to 2019 September. In addition, X-ray data were taken from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Swift/XRT databases, and gamma-ray data were taken from the Fermi-Large Area Telescope 3FGL catalogue. From the total of 18 blazars, we found variability in each one of the time-scales considired for 6 blazars (PKS 0208-512, PKS 1116-46, PKS 1440-389, PKS 1510-089, PKS 2005-489, and PKS 2155-304). In particular, from the colour-magnitude and the multiwavelength analysis, we found that PKS 1510-089 (flat-spectrum radio quasar) is undergoing an activity phase. For the case of PKS 2005-489 (BL Lac), this blazar is in a quiescent state, in which it has been for more than a decade, and it is compatible with its bluer-when-brighter moderate tendency, possibly due to the presence of shocks within the jet.

Disentangling the nature of the prototype radio weak BL Lac: Contemporaneous multifrequency observations of WISE J141046.00 + 740511.2

Context. The gamma-ray emitting source WISE J141046.00+740511.2 has been associated with a Fermi-LAT detection by crossmatching with Swift/XRT data. It has shown all the canonical observational characteristics of a BL Lac source, including a power-law, featureless optical spectrum. However, it was only recently detected at radio frequencies and its radio flux is significantly low. Aims. Given that a radio detection is fundamental to associate lower-energy counterparts to Fermi-LAT sources, we aim to unambiguously classify this source by performing a multiwavelength analysis based on contemporaneous data. Methods. By using multifrequency observations at the Jansky Very Large Array, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, Gran Telescopio Canarias, Gemini, William Herschel Telescope and Liverpool observatories, together with Fermi-LAT and Swift data, we carried out two kinds of analyses. On one hand, we studied several known parameters that account for the radio loudness or weakness characterization and their application to blazars (in general) and to our source (in particular). And, on the other hand, we built and analyzed the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source to try to explain its peculiar characteristics. Results. The multiwavelength analysis indicates that WISE J141046.00+740511.2 is a blazar of the high-frequency peaked (HBL) type that emits highly polarized light and that is likely located at a low redshift. In addition, the one-zone model parameters that best fit its SED are those of an extreme HBL (EHBL); this blazar type has been extensively predicted in theory to be lacking in the radio emission that is otherwise typical of canonical gamma-ray blazars. Conclusions. We confirm that WISE J141046.00+740511.2 is indeed a highly polarized BL Lac of the HBL type. Further studies will be conducted to explain the atypical low radio flux detected for this source.

Microvariability in AGNs: study of different statistical methods II. Light curves from simulated images

In a previous paper, we studied two statistical methods used to analyse the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs): the C and F statistics. Applying them to observed differential light-curves of 39 AGNs, we found that, even though the C criterion cannot be considered as an actual statistical test, it could still be a useful parameter to detect variability, whereas F is a good detector of non-variability. In order to test these results under controlled input conditions, so that the different error sources could be individually evaluated, we generated a series of synthetic differential light curves simulating astronomical images with different atmospheric conditions, such as cloud cover, seeing or sky brightness, as well as several types of intrinsic variability of the AGN, all with a specific instrumental configuration. Having obtained light curves for each case, we applied both statistics to them in order to test their reliability. We found that a weight factor should always be used with these indices. The F test has a tendency to classify noisy non-variable curves as variable (i.e. false positives), although it is reliable and robust to correctly classify non-variable curves. On the contrary, although the C index tends to give false negatives, we found that whenever the C index indicates a source to be variable, it effectively is. Finally, light curves with low amplitude variabilities are more likely to be affected by changes in atmospheric conditions.

Early-type galaxies in the Antlia Cluster: global properties

We present an extension of our previous research on the early-type galaxy population of the Antlia cluster (d ~ 35 Mpc), achieving a total coverage of ~ 2.6 deg x deg and performing surface photometry for ~300 galaxies, 130 of which are new uncatalogued ones. Such new galaxies mainly fall in the low surface brightness (LSB) regime, but there are also some lenticulars (S0) which support the existence of unique functions that connect bright and dwarf galaxies in the scaling relations. We analyse the projected spatial distribution of galaxies up to a distance of ~800 kpc from NGC 3268, the adopted centre, as well as the radial velocity distribution and the correlation between galaxy colour and effective radius with the projected spatial distribution. We also obtain the luminosity function of the early-type galaxies and the distribution of stellar masses using the T1-band magnitudes and adopted mass-luminosity ratios. Additionally, we correlate the central galaxy distribution with an X-ray emission map from the literature. Based on the analysis of the radial velocities and galaxy colour distributions, we find that galaxies redder than the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) have a velocity distribution strongly concentrated towards the values of the dominant galaxies and are homogeneously distributed throughout the cluster. Those bluer than the CMR, in turn, have a much more extended radial velocity distribution and are concentrated towards the centre of the cluster. We also identify 12 candidates to ultra diffuse galaxies (UDG), that seem to be split into two families, and speculate about their origins in the context of the cluster structure.

Dual-Beam Optical Linear Polarimetry from Southern Skies. Characterisation of CasPol for high precision polarimetry

We present a characterization of CasPol, a dual-beam polarimeter mounted at the 2.15 meter Jorge Sahade Telescope, located at the Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito, Argentina. The telescope is one of the few available meter-sized optical telescopes located in the Southern Hemisphere hosting a polarimeter. To carry out this work we collected photo-polarimetric data along five observing campaigns, the first one during January, 2014, and the remaining ones spread between August, 2017 and March, 2018. The data were taken through the Johnson-Cousins V, R and I filters. Along the campaigns, we observed eight unpolarized and four polarized standard stars. Our analysis begun characterizing the impact of seeing and aperture into the polarimetric measurements, defining an optimum aperture extraction and setting a clear limit for seeing conditions. Then, we used the unpolarized standard stars to characterize the level of instrumental polarization, and to assess the presence of polarization dependent on the position across the charge coupled-device. Polarized standard stars were investigated to quantify the stability of the instrument with wavelength. Specifically, we find that the overall instrumental polarization of CasPol is $\sim 0.2 \%$ in the V, R and I bands, with a negligible polarization dependence on the position of the stars on the detector. The stability of the half-wave plate retarder is about 0.35 degrees, making CasPol comparable to already existing instruments. We also provide new measurements in the three photometric bands for both the unpolarized and polarized standard stars. Finally, we show scientific results, illustrating the capabilities of CasPol for precision polarimetry of relatively faint objects.

Galaxias de bajo brillo superficial: analogas a los satélites de Andrómeda en Pegasus I?

Here we show the preliminary results of a study where there seems to be a bias effect in the size distributions of the detected low-surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in different environments. In this sense, more distant groups/clusters would lack small effective radius objects, while large systems would not found in the Local Group and nearby environments. While there may be an actual shortage of large LSB galaxies in low-density environments like the Local Group, the non-detection of small (and faint) systems at large distances is clearly a selection effect. As an example, LSB galaxies with similar sizes to those of the satellites of Andromeda in the Local Group, will be certainly missed in a visual identification at the distance of Pegasus I.

Propiedades fotométricas de las galaxias enanas de bajo brillo superficial en la zona central del grupo Pegasus I

Here we show the preliminary results of a photometric study of low surface brightness objects with $μ_{g'}~\gtrsim~25$~mag/arcsec$^2$. These objects are present in several fields obtained with GEMINI-GMOS, in the central region of the Pegasus I group. We found that their photometric characteristics are similar to the so-called dwarf spheroidal galaxies or to the ultra low surface brightness galaxies.

Microvariability in AGNs: study of different statistical methods - I. Observational analysis

We present the results of a study of different statistical methods currently used in the literature to analyse the (micro)variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from ground-based optical observations. In particular, we focus on the comparison between the results obtained by applying the so-called C and F statistics, which are based on the ratio of standard deviations and variances, respectively. The motivation for this is that the implementation of these methods leads to different and contradictory results, making the variability classification of the light curves of a certain source dependent on the statistics implemented. For this purpose, we re-analyse the results on an AGN sample observed along several sessions with the 2.15m "Jorge Sahade" telescope (CASLEO), San Juan, Argentina. For each AGN we constructed the nightly differential light curves. We thus obtained a total of 78 light curves for 39 AGNs, and we then applied the statistical tests mentioned above, in order to re-classify the variability state of these light curves and in an attempt to find the suitable statistical methodology to study photometric (micro)variations. We conclude that, although the $C$ criterion is not proper a statistical test, it could still be a suitable parameter to detect variability and that its application allows us to get more reliable variability results, in contrast with the F test.

Looking for blazars in a sample of unidentified high-energy emitting Fermi sources

Context. Based on their overwhelming dominance among associated Fermi gamma ray catalogue sources, it is expected that a large fraction of the unidentified Fermi objects are blazars. Through crossmatching between the positions of unidentified gamma ray sources from the First Fermi Catalog of gamma ray sources emitting above 10 GeV (1FHL) and the ROSAT and Swift XRT catalogues of X ray objects and between pointed XRT observations, a sample of 36 potential associations was found in previous works with less than 15 arcsec of positional offset. One third of them have recently been classified; the remainder, though believed to belong to the blazar class, still lack spectroscopic classifications. Aims. We study the optical spectrum of the putative counterparts of these unidentified gamma ray sources in order to find their redshifts and to determine their nature and main spectral characteristics. Methods. An observational campaign was carried out on the putative counterparts of 13 1FHL sources using medium resolution optical spectroscopy from the Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna in Loiano, Italy; the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Nordic Optical Telescope, both in the Canary Islands, Spain; and the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional San Pedro Martir in Baja California, Mexico. Results. We were able to classify 14 new objects based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Conclusions. Twelve new blazars were found, along with one new quasar and one new narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) to be potentially associated with the 1FHL sources of our sample. Redshifts or lower limits were obtained when possible alongside central black hole mass and luminosity estimates for the NLS1 and the quasar.

Optical flux behaviour of a sample of Fermi blazars

Aims: We aim at investigating the time-behaviour of a sample of gamma-ray blazars. We present the results from a 13 month-long optical photometry monitoring campaign of the blazars PKS 0048-097, PKS 0754+100, HB89 0827+243, PKS 0851+202, PKS 1253-055, PKS1510-089, PKS 1749+096, PKS 2230+114 and PKS 2251+158. Methods: We analyse the variability of each object, focusing on different time-scales (long term, short term, and microvariability), in an attempt to achieve a statistical comparison of the results. Results: After applying a geometric model to explain the variability results, we found that it is possible that a slight change in the direction of the jet generates the variations detected in some objects during this campaign.

Discovery of a deep Seyfert-2 galaxy at z = 0.222 behind NGC 300

We report on the unveiling of the nature of the unidentified X-ray source 3XMM J005450.3-373849 as a Seyfert-2 galaxy located behind the spiral galaxy NGC 300 using Hubble Space Telescope data, new spectroscopic Gemini observations and available XMM-Newton and Chandra data. We show that the X-ray source is positionally coincident with an extended optical source, composed by a marginally resolved nucleus/bulge, surrounded by an elliptical disc-like feature and two symmetrical outer rings. The optical spectrum is typical of a Seyfert-2 galaxy redshifted to z=0.222 +/- 0.001, which confirms that the source is not physically related to NGC 300. At this redshift the source would be located at 909+/-4 Mpc (comoving distance in the standard model). The X-ray spectra of the source are well-fitted by an absorbed power-law model. By tying $N_\mathrm{H}$ between the six available spectra, we found a variable index $Γ$ running from ~2 in 2000-2001 years, to 1.4-1.6 in the 2005-2014 period. Alternatively, by tying $Γ$, we found variable absorption columns of N_H ~ 0.34 x $10^{-22}$ cm$^{-2}$ in 2000-2001 years, and 0.54-0.75 x $10^{-22}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 2005-2014 period. Although we cannot distinguish between an spectral or absorption origin, from the derived unabsorbed X-ray fluxes, we are able to assure the presence of long-term X-ray variability. Furthermore, the unabsorbed X-ray luminosities of 0.8-2 x 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ derived in the X-ray band are in agreement with a weakly obscured Seyfert-2 AGN at $z \approx 0.22$.

Evolutionary properties of the low-luminosity galaxy population in the NGC5044 Group

With this third paper of a series we present Johnson-Gunn B,g,V,r,i,z multicolour photometry for 79 objects, including a significant fraction of the faintest galaxies around NGC5044, assessing group membership on the basis of apparent morphology and low-resolution optical spectroscopy to estimate redshift for 21 objects. Together, dE's and Im's provide the bulk of the galaxy luminosity function, around M(g)\sim-18.0, while the S0 and dSph components dominate, respectively, the bright and faint-end tails of the distribution. This special mix places the NGC 5044 group just "midway" between the high-density cosmic aggregation scale typical of galaxy clusters, and the low-density environment of looser galaxy clumps like our Local Group. The bright mass of the 136 member galaxies with available photometry and morphological classification, amounts to a total of 2.3x10^{12}M_sun while current SFR within the group turns to be about or higher than 23M_sun/yr. In this regard, a drift toward bluer integrated colours is found to be an issue for dE's pointing to a moderate but pervasive star-formation activity even among nominally "quiescent" stellar systems. Through Lick narrow-band index analysis, dwarf ellipticals are found to share a sub-solar metallicity (-1.0 < [Fe/H] <-0.5) with a clear decoupling between Iron and alpha elements, as already established also for high-mass systems. Both dE's and dS0's are consistent with an old age, about one Hubble time, although a possible bias, toward higher values of age, may be induced by the gas emission affecting the Hbeta strength.

Polarization and photometric observations of the gamma-ray blazar PG 1553+113

We present the results of an observational photo-polarimetry campaign of the blazar PG 1553+113 at optical wavelengths. The blazar was recently detected at very high energies (> 100 GeV) by the H.E.S.S and MAGIC gamma-ray Cherenkov telescopes. Our high-temporal resolution data show significant variations in the linear polarization percentage and position angle at inter-night time-scales, while at shorter (intra-night) time-scales both parameters varied less significantly, if at all. Changes in the polarization angle seem to be common in gamma-ray emitting blazars. Simultaneous differential photometry (through the B and R bands) shows no significant variability in the total optical flux. We provide B and R magnitudes, along with a finding chart, for a set of field stars suitable for differential photometry.

The intriguing nature of the high energy gamma ray source XSSJ12270-4859

The nature of the hard X-ray source XSSJ12270-4859 is still unclear though it was claimed to be a magnetic Cataclysmic Variable. We here present a broad-band X-ray and gamma ray study based on a recent XMM-Newton observation and archival INTEGRAL and RXTE data. From the Fermi/LAT 1-year point source catalogue, we tentatively associate XSSJ12270-4859 with 1FGLJ1227.9-4852, a source of high energy gamma rays with emission up to 10GeV. We complement the study with UV photometry from XMM-Newton and ground-based optical and near-IR photometry. The X-ray emission is highly variable showing flares and intensity dips. The X-ray flares consist of flare-dip pairs. Flares are also detected in the UV range but not the dips. Aperiodic dipping behaviour is also observed during X-ray quiescence but not in the UV. The 0.2-100keV spectrum is featureless and described by a power law model with Gamma=1.7. The 100MeV-10GeV spectrum is instead represented by a power law index of 2.45. The luminosity ratio between 0.1-100GeV and 0.2--100keV is ~0.8, hence the GeV emission is a significant component of the total energy output. Furthermore, the X-ray spectrum does not greatly change during flares, quiescence and the dips seen in quiescence but it hardens during the post-flare dips. Optical photometry reveals a period of 4.32hr likely related to the binary orbit. Near-IR, possibly ellipsoidal, variations are detected. Large amplitude variability on shorter (tens mins) timescales are found to be non-periodic. The observed variability at all wavelengths and the spectral characteristics strongly favour a low-mass atypical low-luminosity X-ray binary and are against a Cataclysmic Variable nature. The association with a Fermi/LAT high energy gamma ray source further strengths this interpretation.

A common colour-magnitude relation from giant elliptical galaxies to globular clusters?

We discuss the existence of a common colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of metal-poor globular clusters and early-type galaxies, i.e. giant ellipticals, normal ellipticals and lenticulars, dwarf ellipticals and lenticulars, and dwarf spheroidals. Such CMR would cover a range of ~ 14 mag, extending from the brightest galaxies, down to the globular clusters on the fainter side.

GEMINI-GMOS spectroscopy in the Antlia cluster

We present preliminary results of a spectroscopic study performed in the Antlia cluster through GEMINI-GMOS data. We derived new radial velocities that allow us to confirm the cluster membership of several new faint galaxies, as well as to identify very interesting background objects.
