Thermalized polarization dynamics of a discrete optical waveguide system with four-wave mixing

Statistical mechanics of two coupled vector fields is studied in the tight-binding model that describes propagation of polarized light in discrete waveguides in the presence of the four-wave mixing. The energy and power conservation laws enable the formulation of the equilibrium properties of the polarization state in terms of the Gibbs measure with positive temperature. The transition line $T=\infty$ is established beyond which the discrete vector solitons are created. Also in the limit of the large nonlinearity an analytical expression for the distribution of Stokes parameters is obtained which is found to be dependent only on the statistical properties of the initial polarization state and not on the strength of nonlinearity. The evolution of the system to the final equilibrium state is shown to pass through the intermediate stage when the energy exchange between the waveveguides is still negligible. The distribution of the Stokes parameters in this regime has a complex multimodal structure strongly dependent on the nonlinear coupling coefficients and the initial conditions.

Soliton-based discriminator of non-coherent optical pulses

We introduce a concept of noncoherent optical pulse discrimination from a coherent (or partially coherent) signal of the same energy using a phenomenon of soliton generation. The impact of randomisation of the optical signal content on the observable characteristics of solitons generation is examined and quantified for a particular example of rectangular pulse.

Statistics of a noise-driven Manakov soliton

We investigate the statistics of a vector Manakov soliton in the presence of additive Gaussian white noise. The adiabatic perturbation theory for Manakov soliton yields a stochastic Langevin system which we analyze via the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density function (PDF) for the soliton parameters. We obtain marginal PDFs for the soliton frequency and amplitude as well as soliton amplitude and polarization angle. We also derive formulae for the variances of all soliton parameters and analyze their dependence on the initial values of polarization angle and phase.

Statistics of noise-driven coupled nonlinear oscillators: applications to systems with Kerr nonlinearity

We present exact analytical results for the statistics of nonlinear coupled oscillators under the influence of additive white noise. We suggest a perturbative approach for analysing the statistics of such systems under the action of a deterministic perturbation, based on the exact expressions for probability density functions for noise-driven oscillators. Using our perturbation technique we show that our results can be applied to studying the optical signal propagation in noisy fibres at (nearly) zero dispersion as well as to weakly nonlinear lattice models with additive noise. The approach proposed can account for a wide spectrum of physically meaningful perturbations and is applicable to the case of large noise strength.

Information capacity of optical fiber channels with zero average dispersion

We study the statistics of optical data transmission in a noisy nonlinear fiber channel with a weak dispersion management and zero average dispersion. Applying path integral methods we have found exactly the probability density functions of channel output both for a non-linear noisy channel and for a linear channel with additive and multiplicative noise. We have obtained analytically a lower bound estimate for the Shannon capacity of considered nonlinear fiber channel.
