Instabilities in two-fluid magnetized media with inter-component drift

We analyse the stability of a magnetized medium consisting of a neutral fluid and a fluid of charged particles, coupled to each other through a drag force and exposed to differential body forces (for example, as the result of radiation forces on one phase). We consider a uniform equilibrium and simple model input physics, but do not arbitrarily restrict the relative orientations of the magnetic field, slip velocity and wave vector of the disturbance. We find several instabilities and classify these in terms of wave resonances. We briefly apply our results to the structure of SiO maser regions appearing in the winds from late-type stars.

The Formation of Broad Emission Line Regions in Supernova-QSO Wind Interactions

We show that a cooled region of shocked supernova ejecta forms in a type II supernova-QSO wind interaction, and has a density, an ionization parameter, and a column density compatible with those inferred for the high ionization component of the broad emission line regions in QSOs. The calculations are based on the assumption that the ejecta flow is described initially by a similarity solution investigated by Chevalier (1982) and Nadyozhin (1985) and is spherically symmetric. Heating and cooling appropriate for gas irradiated by a nearby powerful continuum source is included in our model, together with reasonable assumptions for the properties of the QSO wind. The model results are also in agreement with observational correlations and imply reasonable supernova rates.

On the Inadmissibility of Non-evolutionary Shocks

In this paper we study the general relationship between the evolutionary conditions for discontinuous solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws with a concave entropy function and the existence and uniqueness of steady dissipative shock structure. Our results confirm the classical shock theory. We also show that the appearance of intermediate shocks in numerical MHD simulations can be understood in terms of the equations planar magnetohydrodynamics for which some of these shocks turn out to be evolutionary. Finally, we discuss ways in which numerical schemes can be modified in order to avoid the appearance of intermediate shocks in simulations with such symmetry.
