Temperature Dependent Magnetic and Structural Properties of Al Substituted Nanostructured Ferrites with Large Coercive Fields

We report a comprehensive study of the temperature-dependent structural, magnetic, vibrational, and dielectric properties of Al-substituted M-type hexaferrites SrFe$_{12-x}$Al$_x$O$_{19}$. Neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectrometry show that Al$^{3+}$ preferentially replaces Fe$^{3+}$ at spin-up octahedral sites (2a, 12k), disrupting the exchange coupling with the spin-down 4f tetrahedral sites and leading to a progressive reduction of site-specific magnetic moments and a systematic decrease in the Curie temperature, supported by temperature dependent susceptibility measurements. Raman spectroscopy reveals pronounced phonon anomalies near $T_C$, particularly in modes associated with bipyramidal Fe-O vibrations, reflecting the weakening of both 4e-12k and 4e-4f exchange pathways. However, the coercive field exhibits a dramatic increase, reaching $μ_0H_C$ $\sim$ 1.2 T for SrFe$_{9.6}$Al$_{2.4}$O$_{19}$, among the largest values reported for this class. Susceptibility measurements suggest that Al substitution, while weakening the superexchange network, contributes to the stabilization of single-domain behavior.

Instantaneous Pole Velocity and Global Models

A new approach to estimating the velocity of the pole moving is considered. The method uses the model-calculated spatial distribution of the (vector) horizontal component \textbf{H} for a given year and its change relative to the closest epochs. The velocity equation is obtained from the expression for the time dependence of the position of the pole $\mathbf{H}(λ(t),ϕ(t),t)=0$. Here $λ(t)$ and $ϕ(t)$ are the geographic coordinates of the pole at time $t$. The velocity between epochs can be found using the Hermite spline, which gives a smooth line that keeps the velocity vector in each epoch. We use IGRF and COV-OBSx2 models to find the horizontal component.

"Grating Echo" instrument for small-angle neutron scattering investigations

The concept of the instrument with absorption gratings into small-angle neutron scattering measuring is discussed. The instrument action consists of passing direct and scattered radiation through a system of 3 absorption gratings, consisting of periodic transparent and absorbing strips. The instrument operates in a mode of geometric optics. The principle of operation of the instrument is demonstrated on a prototype created for optical radiation. For the instrument equations of the radiation transmission and the display of the sample, scattering function has been derived. The necessary parameters of neutron absorption gratings and design limitations of the installation are given. By the concept of "grating echo instrument for neutron scattering", the expected characteristics and experimental possibilities are presented.

Inverse Problems for the Heat Equation with Memory

We study inverse boundary problems for a one dimensional linear integro-differential equation of the Gurtin--Pipkin type with the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as the inverse data. Under natural conditions on the kernel of the integral operator, we give the explicit formula for the solution of the problem with the observation on the semiaxis $t>0.$ For the observation on finite time interval, we prove the uniqueness result, which is similar to the local Borg--Marchenko theorem for the Schrödinger equation.

Testing the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm in the Seafloor Spreading Rate Problem

We offer to apply the powerful Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm to find the spreading rate variation by comparing profiles of marine magnetic anomalies with the synthetic field constructed by the magnetic polarity reference scale. For the fixed spreading rate and the given interval of the polarity scale we generate the synthetic magnetic fields which we compare with the field obtained for temporal variations of seafloor spreading rate.

Some remarks on resolving and interpretation of the short marine magnetic anomalies

Marine magnetic anomalies of the tiny wiggles (TW) type can be used to solve geohistorical and paleomagnetic problems. The model fields corresponding to Paleocene-Eocene anomalies in the northwestern Indian Ocean, which were formed during the fasts preading stage, were studied. For these fields, widely used interpretation methods were compared. The testing was performed with first the classical block model and then more complex models reflecting actual processes of oceanic accretion and magnetic field variations in the past. Spectral and statistical methods are used to estimate the magnetic anomalies(MA) resolving. Preprocessing of a set profiles based on the maximal correlation is considered.

Temperature evolution of structural and magnetic properties of stoichiometric LiCu2O2: correlation of thermal expansion coefficient and magnetic order

Temperature-dependent crystallographic and magnetic studies on stoichiometric single crystals of LiCu2O2 are reported. The magnetic properties are similar to earlier findings demonstrating antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K. Evidence of magnetoelastic coupling is observed in the thermal expansion along the c-direction; not only at the low temperature antiferromagnetic transitions, but an anomalous behavior of the thermal expansion indicate magnetoelastic coupling also to the magnetic ordering related to a weak spontaneous magnetic moment appearing at 150 K. Ac-susceptibility measurements at different frequencies and superposed dc- fields are employed to further characterize this magnetic anomaly.

Chemical pressure effects on structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of solid solutions Mn3-xCoxTeO6

The effects of Co2+ doping on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic frustrated antiferromagnet Mn3TeO6 have been investigated. Ceramic samples of the solid solution series Mn3-xCoxTeO6 were prepared by a solid-state reaction route. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and electron microscopy techniques were combined with calorimetric, dielectric and magnetic measurements to investigate the dependence of the crystal structure and physical properties on temperature and composition. It is shown that the compounds with x up to 2.4 all adopt the trigonal corundum-related structure of pure Mn3TeO6 (space group R-3) in the temperature range 5-295 K and that the lattice parameters a and c and the unit-cell volume V decrease linearly with increasing Co2+ concentration. The low- temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data evidence the antiferromagnetic ordering of all samples. The Neel temperature linearly increases with Co2+ concentration x. Curie-Weiss fits of the high temperature susceptibility indicate that the magnetic frustration decreases with x. The derived magnetic structure of Mn3TeO6 can be described as an incommensurately modulated magnetic spin state with k = [0, 0, kz] and an elliptical spin- spiral order of spins within the chains of MnO6 octahedra. With increasing Co2+ concentration the propagation vector kz changes from 0.453 (x = 0) to 0.516 (x = 2.4). The magnetic anisotropy changes as well, leading to a reorientation of the spiral-basal plane. A possible coexistence of long-range order of electrical dipoles and magnetic moments in Mn3-xCoxTeO6 is discussed.

Enhancement of antiferromagnetic interaction and transition temperature in M3TeO6 systems (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu)

Several M3 TeO6 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) oxides order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures (near or below 60 K), while displaying interesting dielectric properties at high temperatures (ferroelectricity below 1000 K in M = Ni case). We have investigated and analyzed the structural and magnetic properties of Mn-doped Co3 TeO6 and Ni3 TeO6, which order antiferromagnetically at temperatures higher than their undoped counterparts.

Spin and Dipole Ordering in Ni_2InSbO_6 and Ni_2ScSbO_6 with corundum-related structure

The complex metal oxides Ni2InSbO6 (NISO) and Ni2ScSbO6 (NSSO) have been prepared in form of polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. The compounds adopt a trigonal structure, space group R3, of the corundum related Ni3TeO6 (NTO) type. Only one of the octahedral Ni positions (Ni(2)) of the NTO structure was found to be occupied by In (Sc). NTO has non-centrosymmetric structure and is ferroelectric below 1000 K, dielectric and second harmonic measurements suggest that also NISO and NSSO are correspondingly ferroelectric. Magnetization measurements signified antiferromagnetic ordering below TN=60 K (NSSO) and 76 K (NISO). The magnetic structure is formed by two antiferromagnetically coupled incommensurate helices with the spiral axis along the b-axis and propagation vector k = [0, ky,0] with ky= 0.036(1) (NSSO) and ky= 0.029(1) (NISO). The observed structural and magnetic properties of NISO and NSSO are discussed and compared with those of NTO.

Cramer-Rao bound in detection of reversals

We use the Cramer-Rao bound to show which short magnetic reversals can be recovered successfully from a magnetic anomaly profile. Using a simple variant of the Vine-Matthews model, we show, in particular, that errors in determining the duration of a short subchron are much smaller than errors in localizing the center of the subchron.

High-temperature structural phase transition in multiferroic LiCu_2O_2

LiCu_2O_2 single crystals were studied in the temperature range 300-1100 K by means of heating-cooling curves of differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray powder diffraction and electrical measurements. A reversible first-order phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was found to take place at 993 K. At the transition, a peak is observed in the DTA curves, as well as jumps of the unit cell parameters and electrical resistivity. Considering the crystal structure of LiCu_2O_2 and the entropy change associated with the phase transition, it is concluded that the phase transition is related to processes of order-disorder of the Cu2+ and Li+ cations onto their crystallographic positions.

Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$: a ferrimagnetic ilmenite and an antiferromagnetic perovskite

Due of its polymorphism, Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ can be synthesized at high pressures and temperatures as a ferrimagnetic ilmenite or an antiferromagnetic perovskite. The structural phase transformation is discussed in detail, and magnetic structures are proposed for both phases. The high-pressure Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ polymorph is a rare example of $A_2 B'B"$O$_6$ perovskite with solely Mn cations on the $A$-site. Fe and Sb cations are ordered on the $B$-sites. Theoretical calculations for the perovskite phase suggest a complex magnetic structure, holding an electronic polarization.

Preparation, structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of LaFeO3-PbTiO3 solid solutions

Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<1) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. These complex perovskites have been studied by means of X-ray (XRPD) and neutron powder (NPD) diffraction, complemented with dielectric, magnetic, heat capacity and Mössbauer measurements. Complete solubility in the perovskite series was demonstrated. The NPD and XRPD patterns were successfully refined as orthorhombic (x \leq 0.7) and tetragonal (x \geq 0.8). A composition-driven phase transformation occurs within the interval 0.7<x<0.8. The samples with x<0.5 showed evidence of long-range magnetic ordering with an G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments of the Fe3+ cations in the B-site with propagation vector k = (0,0,0). Based on the obtained experimental data, a combined structural and magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. The factors governing the structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of (1-x) LaFeO3 - (x)PbTiO3 solid solutions are discussed, as well as their possible multiferroicity.

Investigation of the magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric properties of the Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ ilmenite

The magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric properties of mineral and synthetic melanostibite Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ with ilmenite-type structure have been studied. Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ orders ferrimagnetically below 270 K and is found to undergo a second-order magnetic phase transition. The associated magnetic entropy change amounts to 1.7 J/kgK for the mineral and 1.8 J/kgK synthetic melanostibite for 5 T field change. For the synthetic Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ the adiabatic temperature change was estimated from magnetic- and specific heat measurements and amounts to 0.2 K in 1 T field change. Perspectives of the promising functional properties of Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$-based materials are discussed.

Structural and magnetic properties of Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x = 0, 1, 1.5 and 2)

Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum-related A3TeO6 structure and a complex magnetic structure involving two magnetic orbits for the Mn atoms [*]. Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x=0, 1, 1.5 and 2) ceramics were synthesized by solid state reaction and investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. Cd2+ replaces Mn2+ cations without greatly affecting the structure of the compound. The Mn and Cd cations were found to be randomly distributed over the A-site. Magnetization measurements indicated that the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperature with a transition temperature that decreases with increasing Cd doping. The nuclear and magnetic structure of one specially prepared 114Cd containing sample: Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6, was studied using neutron powder diffraction over the temperature range 2 to 295 K. Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6 was found to order in an incommensurate helical magnetic structure, very similar to that of Mn3TeO6 [*]. However, with a lower transition temperature and the extension of the ordered structure confined to order 240(10) Å. [*] S. A. Ivanov et al. Mater. Res. Bull. 46 (2011) 1870.

Temperature-dependent multi-k magnetic structure in multiferroic Co3TeO6

A complex magnetic order of the multiferroic compound Co3TeO6 has been revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies on ceramics and crushed single crystals. The compound adopts a monoclinic structure (s.g. C2/c) in the studied temperature range 2 K - 300 K but exhibits successive antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector k1 = (0, 0.485, 0.055) sets in at 26 K. A transition to a second antiferromagnetic structure with k2 = (0, 0, 0) takes place at 21.1 K. Moreover, a transition to a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with k3 = (0, 0.5, 0.25) occurs at 17.4 K. The magnetic structures have been determined by neutron powder diffraction using group theory analysis as a preliminary tool. Different coordinations of the Co2+ ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co3TeO6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. The observed magnetic phase transformations are interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions. The temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, derived from refinements of high-resolution neutron data, are discussed and possible mechanisms connected with the spin reorientations are described.

Complex magnetism and magnetic field-driven electrical polarization in Co$_3$TeO$_6$

The magnetic and electrical properties of Co$_3$TeO$_6$ single-crystals with corundum related structure reveal a magnetic-field induced polarization below 21 K. A sharp peak in the specific heat at \approx 18 K indicates a reconstructive-type first-order phase transition. From second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements breaking of inversion symmetry is evident and the point-group symmetry was determined as m. The temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetic and electrical polarizations are discussed in the light of the SHG results.
