Gaps in the spectrum of two-dimensional square packing of stiff disks

In this paper we investigate via an asymptotic method the opening of gaps in the spectrum of a stiff problem for the Laplace operator $-Δ$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ perforated by contiguous circular holes. The density and the stiffness constants are of order $\varepsilon^{-2m}$ and $\varepsilon^{-1}$ in the holes with $m\in (0,1/2)$. We provide an explicit expression of the leading terms of the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions which are related to the Bessel functions of the first kind.

The stiff Neumann problem: asymptotic specialty and "kissing" domains

We study the stiff spectral Neumann problem for the Laplace operator in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ which is divided into two subdomains: an annulus $Ω_1$ and a core $Ω_0$. The density and the stiffness constants are of order $\varepsilon^{-2m}$ and $\varepsilon^{-1}$ in $Ω_0$, while they are of order $1$ in $Ω_1$. Here $m\in\mathbb{R}$ is fixed and $\varepsilon>0$ is small. We provide asymptotics for the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions as $\varepsilon \to 0$ for any $m$. In dimension $2$ the case when $Ω_0$ touches the exterior boudary $\partialΩ$ and $Ω_1$ gets two cusps at a point $\mathcal{O}$ is included into consideration. The possibility to apply the same asymptotic procedure as in the "smooth" case is based on the structure of eigenfunctions in the vicinity of the irregular part. The full asymptotic series as $x\to\mathcal{O}$ for solutions of the mixed boundary value problem for the Laplace operator in the cuspidal domain is given.

Trapped modes in armchair graphene nanoribbons

We study scattering on an ultra-low potential in armchair graphene nanoribbon. Using the continuous Dirac model and including a couple of artificial waves in the scattering process, described by an augumented scattering matrix, we derive a condition for the existence of a trapped mode. We consider the threshold energies, where the the multiplicity of the continuous spectrum changes and show that a trapped mode may appear for energies slightly less than a threshold and its multiplicity does not exceed one. For energies which are higher than a threshold, there are no trapped modes, provided that the potential is sufficiently small.

Effects of Rayleigh waves on the essential spectrum in perturbed doubly periodic elliptic problems

We give an example of a scalar second order differential operator in the plane with double periodic coefficients and describe its modification, which causes an additional spectral band in the essential spectrum. The modified operator is obtained by applying to the coefficients a mirror reflection with respect to a vertical or horizontal line. This change gives rise to Rayleigh type waves localized near the line. The results are proven using asymptotic analysis, and they are based on high contrast of the coefficient functions.

Trapped modes in zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We study a scattering on an ultra-low potential in zigzag graphene nanoribbon. Using mathematical framework based on the continuous Dirac model and augumented scattering matrix, we derive a condition for the existence of a trapped mode. We consider the threshold energies where the continuous spectrum changes its multiplicity and show that the trapped modes may appear for energies slightly less than a threshold and its multiplicity does not exceeds one. We prove that trapped modes do not appear outside the threshold, provided the potential is sufficiently small.

Thin elastic plates supported over small areas. II. Variational-asymptotic models

An asymptotic analysis is performed for thin anisotropic elastic plate clamped along its lateral side and also supported at a small area $θ_{h}$ of one base with diameter of the same order as the plate thickness $h\ll1.$ A three-dimensional boundary layer in the vicinity of the support $θ_{h}$ is involved into the asymptotic form which is justified by means of the previously derived weighted inequality of Korn's type provides an error estimate with the bound $ ch^{1/2} \left | \ln h\right| .$ Ignoring this boundary layer effect reduces the precision order down to $\left| \ln h\right| ^{-1/2}.$ A two-dimensional variational-asymptotic model of the plate is proposed within the theory of self-adjoint extensions of differential operators. The only characteristics of the boundary layer, namely the elastic logarithmic potential matrix of size $4\times4,$ is involved into the model which however keeps the precision order $h^{1/2}\left| \ln h\right| $ in certain norms. Several formulations and applications of the model are discussed.

Embedded eigenvalues of the Neumann problem in a strip with a box-shaped perturbation

We consider the spectral Neumann problem for the Laplace operator in an acoustic waveguide $Π_{l}^{\varepsilon}$ obtained from a straight unit strip by a low box-shaped perturbation of size $2l\times\varepsilon,$ where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter. We prove the existence of the length parameter $l_{k}^{\varepsilon}=πk+O\left( \varepsilon\right) $ with any $k=1,2,3,...$ such that the waveguide $Π_{l_{k}^{\varepsilon}}^{\varepsilon }$ supports a trapped mode with an eigenvalue $λ_{k}^{\varepsilon}% =π^{2}-4π^{4}l^{2}\varepsilon^{2}+O\left( \varepsilon^{3}\right) $ embedded into the continuous spectrum. This eigenvalue is unique in the segment $\left[ 0,π^{2}\right] $ and is absent in the case $l\neq l_{k}^{\varepsilon}.$ The detection of this embedded eigenvalue is based on a criterion for trapped modes involving an artificial object, the augmented scattering matrix. The main technical difficulty is caused by corner points of the perturbed wall $\partialΠ_{l}^{\varepsilon}$ and we discuss available generalizations for other piecewise smooth boundaries.

Spectra of open waveguides in periodic media

We study the essential spectra of formally self-adjoint elliptic systems on doubly periodic planar domains perturbed by a semi-infinite periodic row of foreign inclusions. We show that the essential spectrum of the problem consists of the essential spectrum of the purely periodic problem and another component, which is the union of the discrete spectra of model problems in the infinite perturbation strip; these model problems arise by an application of the partial Floquet-Bloch-Gelfand transform.

Thin elastic plates supported over small areas. I. Korn's inequalities and boundary layers

A thin anisotropic elastic plate clamped along its lateral side and also supported at a small area $θ_{h}$ of one base is considered; the diameter of $θ_{h}$ is of the same order as the plate relative thickness $h\ll1$. In addition to the standard Kirchhoff model with the Sobolev point condition, a three-dimensional boundary layer is investigated in the vicinity of the support $θ_{h}$, which with the help of the derived weighted inequality of Korn's type, will provide an error estimate with the bound $ch^{1/2}|\ln h|$. Ignoring this boundary layer effect reduces the precision order down to $|\ln h|^{-1/2}$.

Scalar boundary value problems on junctions of thin rods and plates. I. Asymptotic analysis and error estimates

We derive asymptotic formulas for the solutions of the mixed boundary value problem for the Poisson equation on the union of a thin cylindrical plate and several thin cylindrical rods. One of the ends of each rod is set into a hole in the plate and the other one is supplied with the Dirichlet condition. The Neumann conditions are imposed on the whole remaining part of the boundary. Elements of the junction are assumed to have contrasting properties so that the small parameter, i.e. the relative thickness, appears in the differential equation, too, while the asymptotic structures crucially depend on the contrastness ratio. Asymptotic error estimates are derived in anisotropic weighted Sobolev norms.

A gap in the spectrum of the Neumann-Laplacian on a periodic waveguide

We will study the spectral problem related to the Laplace operator in a singularly perturbed periodic waveguide. The waveguide is a quasi-cylinder with contains periodic arrangement of inclusions. On the boundary of the waveguide we consider both Neumann and Dirichlet conditions. We will prove that provided the diameter of the inclusion is small enough in the spectrum of Laplacian opens spectral gaps, i.e. frequencies that does not propagate through the waveguide. The existence of the band gaps will verified using the asymptotic analysis of elliptic operators.

Asymptotic analysis, polarization matrices and topological derivatives for piezoelectric materials with small voids

Asymptotic formulae for the mechanical and electric fields in a piezoelectric body with a small void are derived and justified. Such results are new and useful for applications in the field of design of smart materials. In this way the topological derivatives of shape functionals are obtained for piezoelectricity. The asymptotic formulae are given in terms of the so-called polarization tensors (matrices) which are determined by the integral characteristics of voids. The distinguished feature of the piezoelectricity boundary value problems under considerations is the absence of positive definiteness of an differential operator which is non self-adjoint. Two specific Gibbs' functionals of the problem are defined by the energy and the electric enthalpy. The topological derivatives are defined in different manners for each of the governing functionals. Actually, the topological derivative of the enthalpy functional is local i.e., defined by the pointwise values of the governing fields, in contrary to the energy functional and some other suitable shape functionals which admit non-local topological derivatives, i.e., depending on the whole problem data. An example with the weak interaction between mechanical and electric fields provides the explicit asymptotic expansions and can be directly used in numerical procedures of optimal design for smart materials.

The localization effect for eigenfunctions of the mixed boundary value problem in a thin cylinder with distorted ends

A simple sufficient condition on curved end of a straight cylinder is found that provides a localization of the principal eigenfunction of the mixed boundary value for the Laplace operator with the Dirichlet conditions on the lateral side. Namely, the eigenfunction concentrates in the vicinity of the ends and decays exponentially in the interior. Similar effects are observed in the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, too.

Water-waves modes trapped in a canal by a body with the rough surface

The problem about a body in a three dimensional infinite channel is considered in the framework of the theory of linear water-waves. The body has a rough surface characterized by a small parameter $ε>0$ while the distance of the body to the water surface is also of order $ε$. Under a certain symmetry assumption, the accumulation effect for trapped mode frequencies is established, namely, it is proved that, for any given $d>0$ and integer $N>0$, there exists $ε(d,N)>0$ such that the problem has at least $N$ eigenvalues in the interval $(0,d)$ of the continuous spectrum in the case $ε\in(0,ε(d,N)) $. The corresponding eigenfunctions decay exponentially at infinity, have finite energy, and imply trapped modes.
