Bias-field control of the Neel skyrmion nonlinearity in a confined nanostructure

We study the nonlinear dynamics of a cylindrical skyrmion-based oscillator within the framework of a generalized Thiele model. We demonstrate the influence of an bias magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane of the nanocylinder on the oscillation frequency and on the nonlinearity coefficient. It is shown that the field tunes the response frequency, while also producing a substantial change in the nonlinear frequency shift. We find that the nonlinearity coefficient reverses its sign as the field crosses a certain critical value. The variation of the nonlinearity coefficient with the field is clearly illustrated by the observed qualitative changes in nonlinear amplitude-frequency responses. Controlling the nonlinear properties of a skyrmion oscillator by changing the bias magnetic field opens up prospects for creating tunable computational elements for neuromorphic applications.

Hybridization of Ferromagnetic and Cyclotron Resonances in a Two-Dimensional Electron System on a Ferromagnetic Film

The microwave response of a two-dimensional (2D) electron system located on a dielectric ferromagnetic film, which in turn lies on a conducting metal (gate), has been theoretically studied. The entire system has been placed in the perpendicular static magnetic field. It has been found that the ferromagnetic resonance of the film and the cyclotron resonance of the electrons of the 2D system interact in the magnetic field, leading to their repulsion ('anticrossing'). It has been revealed that the anticrossing region is characterized not only by the modification of resonance frequencies compared to the cyclotron resonance in the 2D system without the ferromagnetic substrate and the ferromagnetic resonance in the film without the 2D system, but also by a strong change in the resonance linewidths.

Spin Waves and Spin Currents in Magnon-Phonon Composite Resonator Induced by Acoustic Waves of Various Polarizations

In this work, we present the results of a systematic experimental study of linear and parametric spin wave resonant excitation accompanied by spin currents (spin pumping) in a multifrequency composite bulk acoustic wave resonator with a ZnO-YIG-GGG-YIG/Pt structure. The features of magnetic dynamics excitation in YIG films due to magnetoelastic coupling with acoustic thickness modes of various polarizations are studied. Acoustic spin waves and spin pumping are detected by simultaneous frequency-field mapping of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage and the resonant frequencies of thickness extensional modes. In the parametric range of frequencies and fields, acoustic spin pumping induced by both shear and longitudinal polarization modes was observed. Linear acoustic spin waves are excited only by shear thickness extensional modes because longitudinal acoustic waves do not couple with the magnetic subsystem in linear regime.

Spin pumping in YIG-Pt structures: the role of the van Hove singularities

Spin pumping by surface and backward volume magnetostatic waves in YIG/Pt structures is experimentally studied and analyzed. It is shown that at frequencies corresponding to van Hove singularities in the density of states of the spin wave spectrum, an increase in the efficiency of electron-magnon scattering and spin current generation takes place. The obtained results are important for spin wave-based spintronic devices development.

Control of the nonlinear frequency shift for the spin-transfer nanooscillator using a bias magnetic field

We investigated the possibilities of controlling the nonlinear frequency shift of the magnetization oscillations in a spin-transfer nanoscillator by varying the magnitude and direction of the bias magnetic field. We considered both isotropic ferromagnetic materials and crystals with uniaxial and cubic crystallographic anisotropies. We have shown that achieving a zero nonlinear frequency shift is possible with a certain orientation of the bias magnetic field vector. The results of the theoretical analysis based on the method of Hamiltonian formalism are in good agreement with the micromagnetic simulations. Our research reveals the way to control the frequency tuning of a spin transfer nanoscillator, which is crucial for spintronic signal generation devices.

Laser-induced magnonic band gap formation and control in YIG/GaAs heterostructure

We demonstrate the laser-induced control over spin-wave (SW) transport in the magnonic crystal (MC) waveguide formed from the semiconductor slab placed on the ferrite film. We considered bilayer MC with periodical grooves performed on the top of the n-type gallium arsenide slab side that oriented to the yttrium iron garnet film. To observe the appearance of magnonic gap induced by laser radiation, the fabricated structure was studied by the use of microwave spectroscopy and Brillouin light-scattering. We perform detailed numerical studies of this structure. We showed that the optical control of the magnonic gaps (frequency width and position) is related to the variation of the charge carriers' concentration in GaAs. We attribute these to nonreciprocity of SW transport in the layered structure. Nonreciprocity was induced by the laser exposure of the GaAs slab due to SWs' induced electromagnetic field screening by the optically-generated charge carriers. We showed that SW dispersion, nonreciprocity, and magnonic band gap position and width in the ferrite-semiconductor magnonic crystal can be modified in a controlled manner by laser radiation. Our results show the possibility of the integration of magnonics and semiconductor electronics on the base of YIG/GaAs structures.

Giant widening of interface magnetic layer in almost compensated iron garnet

A two-sublattice ferrimagnet undergoes a transition from a collinear to canted magnetic phase at magnetic field oriented along an easy magnetization direction. In this work, we study the transition by means of the magneto-optical Faraday effect in a thin film of compensated iron garnet (Lu$_{3-{\rm{x}}}$Bi$_{\rm{x}}$)(Fe$_{5-{\rm{y}}-{\rm{z}}}$Ga$_{\rm{y}}$Al$_{\rm{z}}$)O$_{12}$ grown on Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ substrate. In the immediate vicinity of the compensation temperature a precursor of the transition with a complex shape was observed. Using a special sample with variable thickness we demonstrate an interfacial origin of the precursor. Diffusion of gadolinium from the substrate into the film forms a thin intermixed layer with enhanced magnetization. It induces an extended inhomogeneous magnetic structure in the film. A two-step shape of the precursor appears due to an easy-plane anisotropy of the intermixed magnetic layer. We emphasize that an effective width of the inhomogeneous magnetization distribution in the film grows enormously while approaching the compensation temperature.

Roadmap on Spin-Wave Computing

Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Each sub-section is prepared by one or a group of authors and concludes with a brief description of the current challenges and the outlook of the further development of the research directions.

Reconfigurable 3D magnonic crystal: tunable and localized spin-wave excitations in CoFeB meander-shaped film

In this work, we study experimentally by broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements, the dependence of the spin-wave excitation spectra on the magnetic applied field in CoFeB meander-shaped films. Two different orientations of the external magnetic field were explored, namely parallel or perpendicular to the lattice cores. The interpretation of the field dependence of the frequency and spatial profiles of major spin-wave modes were obtained by micromagnetic simulations. We show that the vertical segments lead to the easy-axis type of magnetic anisotropy and support the in-phase and out-of-phase spin-wave precession amplitude in the vertical segments. The latter could potentially be used for the design of tunable metasurfaces or in magnetic memories based on meandering 3D magnetic films.

Magnons Parametric Pumping in Bulk Acoustic Waves Resonator

We report on the experimental observation of excitation and detection of parametric spin waves and spin currents in the bulk acoustic wave resonator. The hybrid resonator consists of ZnO piezoelectric film, yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films on gallium gadolinium garnet substrate, and a heavy metal Pt layer. Shear bulk acoustic waves are electrically excited in the ZnO layer due to piezoeffect at the resonant frequencies of the resonator. The magnetoelastic interaction in the YIG film emerges magnons (spin waves) excitation by acoustic waves either on resonator's eigenfrequencies or the half-value frequencies at supercritical power. We investigate acoustic pumping of magnons at the half-value frequencies and acoustic spin pumping from parametric magnons, using the inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt layer. The constant electric voltage in the Pt layer, depending on the frequency, the magnetic field, and the pump power, was systematically studied. We explain the low threshold obtained (~0.4 mW) by the high efficiency of electric power transmission into the acoustic wave in the resonator.

Enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in thin ferromagnetic films by atomic-scale modulation of interfaces

To stabilize the non-trivial spin textures, e.g., skyrmions or chiral domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films, an additional degree of freedom such as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IDMI) must be induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of a stacked heavy metal layer. However, advanced approaches to simultaneously control IDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are needed for future spin-orbitronic device implementations. Here, we show an effect of atomic-scale surface modulation on the magnetic properties and IDMI in ultrathin films composed of 5d heavy metal/ferromagnet/4d(5d) heavy metal or oxide interfaces, such as Pt/CoFeSiB/Ru, Pt/CoFeSiB/Ta, and Pt/CoFeSiB/MgO. The maximum IDMI value corresponds to the correlated roughness of the bottom and top interfaces of the ferromagnetic layer. The proposed approach for significant enhancement of PMA and IDMI through the interface roughness engineering at the atomic scale offers a powerful tool for the development of the spin-orbitronic devices with the precise and reliable controllability of their functionality.

Manipulation of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Co/Pt multilayers with strain

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is experimentally investigated in Pt/Co/Pt multilayer films under strain. A strong variation (from 0.1 to 0.8 mJ/m$^2$) of the DMI constant is demonstrated at $\pm 0.1\%$ in-plane uniaxial deformation of the films. The anisotropic strain induces strong DMI anisotropy. The DMI constant perpendicular to the strain direction changes sign while the constant along the strain direction does not. Estimates are made showing that DMI manipulation with an electric field can be realized in hybrid ferroelectric/ferromagnetic systems. So, the observed effect opens the way to manipulate the DMI and eventually skyrmions with a voltage via a strain-mediated magneto-electric coupling.

Damping in Ru/Co-based multilayer films with large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Recent development of the magnetic material engineering led to achievement of the systems with a high interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a result, the formation of non-collinear magnetic soliton states or nonreciprocal spin wave dynamics is achievable. Typically used materials are based on bi-layers Heavy Metal/Ferromagnet, e.g., Pt/Co. These layers are characterized not only by a strong DMI, but also by the spin pumping effect and the resulting relatively large damping. Here, we show that the considerable interfacial DMI can be also present in bi-layers based on Ru/Co, characterized with low spin pumping effect and low damping. It is therefore a good candidate for the dynamical studies and implementations of chiral DMI. It is demonstrated by theoretical calculations that the value of DMI can be strongly affected and controlled by the strain of the lattice. We show a systematic experimental and theoretical comparison of magnetic material parameters between Pt/Co and Ru/Co bi-layers as a deserving candidate for spintronic and spin-orbitronic applications.

Pinning and hysteresis in the field dependent diameter evolution of skyrmions in Pt/Co/Ir superlattice stacks

We have imaged Néel skyrmion bubbles in perpendicularly magnetised polycrystalline multilayers patterned into 1 μm diameter dots, using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. The skyrmion bubbles can be nucleated by the application of an external magnetic field and are stable at zero field with a diameter of 260 nm. Applying an out of plane field that opposes the magnetisation of the skyrmion bubble core moment applies pressure to the bubble and gradually compresses it to a diameter of approximately 100 nm. On removing the field the skyrmion bubble returns to its original diameter via a hysteretic pathway where most of the expansion occurs in a single abrupt step. This contradicts analytical models of homogeneous materials in which the skyrmion compression and expansion are reversible. Micromagnetic simulations incorporating disorder can explain this behaviour using an effective thickness modulation between 10 nm grains.

Observation of Magnonic Band Gaps in Magnonic Crystals with Nopnreciprocal Dispersion Relation

An effect of metallization of the magnonic crystal surface on the band gaps formation in the spectra of the surface spin wave (SSW) is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The structures under consideration are one-dimensional magnonic crystals based on yttrium iron garnet with an array of etched grooves with metal screen on the top of the corrugated surface and without it. Due to nonreciprocity of propagation of the SSW the shift of band gap to higher frequency and from the border of the Brillouin zone in presence of conducting overlayer was measured in transmission line experiment. Results of numerical calculations and model analysis are in agreement with experimental data and give further insight into origin of the band gap and properties of the nonreciprocal SSW in metallized magnonic crystals. This gives positive answer to the outstanding question about possibility of detection of magnonic band gaps in the spectra of the spin waves with nonreciprocal dispersion in magnonic crystals and creates potential for new applications and improvements of already existing prototype magnonic devices.

Artificial magnetism in theory of wave multiple scattering by random discrete non-magnetic conducting media

We show that technique of Dyson equation in wave multiple scattering by spatially disordered discrete medium statistical theory leads directly to a dielectric permittivity tensor, which is characterized by spatial dispersion and obeys the generalized Lorentz-Lorenz formula. Introduced via this spatial dispersion an effective magnetic permeability demonstrates the diamagnetic property in limit of independent strongly reflected non-magnetic small spherical particles in accordance with earlier intuitive predictions. The revealed physical nature of the effective diamagnetic property consists in that electric and magnetic dipoles induced in a particle by wave scattering give different contribution into the transverse and longitudinal components of the effective dielectric permittivity. Besides as appeared the diamagnetism under study is enhanced by appearance of additional effective dielectric displacement current in the medium.
