Magnetic Order in Laser-Irradiated Kagome Antiferromagnets

Dispersionless "zero energy mode'' is one of the hallmarks of frustrated kagome antiferromagnets (KAFMs). It points to extensive classically degenerate ground-states. The "zero energy mode'' can be observed experimentally when lifted to a flat mode at finite energy by a strong intrinsic magnetic anisotropy. In this letter, we study the effects of irradiation of laser light on the KAFMs. We adopt the magnon picture without loss of generality. It is shown that circularly or linearly polarized light lifts the "zero energy mode'', stabilizes magnetic order, and induces energy gaps in the KAFMs. We find that the circularly polarized light-induced anisotropies have similar features as the intrinsic in-plane and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in KAFMs. The former stabilizes long-range magnetic order and the latter induces spin canting out-of-plane with nonzero scalar spin chirality. The Floquet thermal Hall effect shows that the synthetic magnetic excitation modes in the case of circularly polarized light are topological, whereas those of linearly polarized light are not.

Dirac Magnon Nodal Loops in Quasi-2D Quantum Magnets

In this report, we propose a new concept of one-dimensional (1D) closed lines of Dirac magnon nodes in two-dimensional (2D) momentum space of quasi-2D quantum magnetic systems. They are termed "2D Dirac magnon nodal-line loops". We utilize the bilayer honeycomb ferromagnets with intralayer coupling $J$ and interlayer coupling $J_L$, which is realizable in the honeycomb chromium compounds CrX$_3$ (X $\equiv$ Br, Cl, and I). However, our results can also exist in other layered quasi-2D quantum magnetic systems. Here, we show that the magnon bands of the bilayer honeycomb ferromagnets overlap for $J_L\neq 0$ and form 1D closed lines of Dirac magnon nodes in 2D momentum space. The 2D Dirac magnon nodal-line loops are topologically protected by inversion and time-reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we show that they are robust against weak Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction $ Δ_{DM}< J_L$ and possess chiral magnon edge modes.}

Topological Magnon Bands and Unconventional Thermal Hall Effect on the Frustrated Honeycomb and Bilayer Triangular Lattice

In the conventional ferromagnetic systems, topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect are due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). In principle, however, the DMI is either negligible or it is not allowed by symmetry in some quantum magnets. Therefore, we expect that topological magnon features will not be present in those systems. In addition, quantum magnets on the triangular-lattice are not expected to possess topological features as the DMI or spin-chirality cancels out due to equal and opposite contributions from adjacent triangles. Here, however, we predict that the isomorphic frustrated honeycomb-lattice and bilayer triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic system will exhibit topological magnon bands and topological thermal Hall effect in the absence of an intrinsic DMI. These unconventional topological magnon features are present as a result of magnetic-field-induced non-coplanar spin configurations with nonzero scalar spin chirality. The relevance of the results to realistic bilayer triangular antiferromagnetic materials are discussed.

Squeezed Dirac and Topological Magnons in a Bosonic Honeycomb Optical Lattice

Quantum information storage using charge-neutral quasiparticles are expected to play a crucial role in the future of quantum computers. In this regard, magnons or collective spin-wave excitations in solid-state materials are promising candidates in the future of quantum computing. Here, we study the quantum squeezing of Dirac and topological magnons in a bosonic honeycomb optical lattice with spin-orbit interaction by utilizing the mapping to quantum spin-$1/2$ XYZ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with discrete Z$_2$ symmetry and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show that the squeezed magnons can be controlled by the Z$_2$ anisotropy and demonstrate how the noise in the system is periodically modified in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the model. Our results also apply to solid-state honeycomb (anti)ferromagnetic insulators.

Noncollinear Antiferromagnetic Haldane Magnon Insulator

In this Letter we present a comprehensive study of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in non-collinear antiferromagnetic systems on the honeycomb lattice with an intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We theoretically show that the system possesses topological magnon bands with Chern number protected edge modes accompanied by a nonzero thermal magnon Hall effect. These features result from non-collinearity of the magnetic moments due to an applied out-of-plane magnetic field. Our results provide an experimental clue towards the realization of topological magnon transports in honeycomb antiferromagnetic compounds such as XPS$_3$ (X=Mn,Fe) and $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$.

Topological Magnon Bands in Ferromagnetic Star Lattice

The experimental observation of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in a kagomé lattice ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc) has inspired the search for topological magnon effects in various insulating ferromagnets that lack an inversion center allowing a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin-orbit interaction. The star lattice (also known as the decorated honeycomb lattice) ferromagnets is an ideal candidate for this purpose because it is a variant of the kagomé lattice with additional links that connect the up-pointing and down-pointing triangles. This gives rise to twice the unit cell of the kagomé lattice, hence a more interesting topological magnon effects. In particular, the triangular bridges on the star lattice can be coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically which is not possible on the kagome lattice ferromagnets. Here, we study DM-induced topological magnon bands, chiral edge modes, and thermal magnon Hall effect on the star lattice ferromagnet in different parameter regimes. The star lattice can also be visualized as the parent material from which topological magnon bands can be realized for the kagomé and honeycomb lattices in some limiting cases.

Topological Thermal Hall Effect in Frustrated Kagomé Antiferromagnets

In frustrated magnets the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction arising from spin-orbit coupling can induce a magnetic long-range order. Here, we report a theoretical prediction of thermal Hall effect in frustrated kagomé magnets such as KCr$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO4)$_2$ and KFe$_3$(OH)$_{6}$(SO$_{4}$)$_2$. The thermal Hall effects in these materials are induced by scalar spin chirality as opposed to DMI in previous studies. The scalar spin chirality originates from magnetic-field-induced chiral spin configuration due to non-coplanar spin textures, but in general it can be spontaneously developed as a macroscopic order parameter in chiral quantum spin liquids. Therefore, we infer that there is a possibility of thermal Hall effect in frustrated kagomé magnets such as herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and the chromium compound Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$, although they also show evidence of magnetic order in the presence of a magnetic field or pressure.

Topological Magnon Insulator in NonCoplanar Kagomé Antiferromagnets: Supplemental Material of arXiv:1608.04561

Topological magnon insulators in insulating Kagomé ferromagnets have been extensively studied in a series of papers. It has been established that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is the key ingredient to observe a nontrivial topological magnon with edge modes. However, insulating antiferromagnets on the Kagomé lattice are frustrated systems considered as a playground for studying quantum spin liquid physics. In these systems the DMI can induce a coplanar but noncollinear magnetic orders with a $\mathbf{q}=0$ propagating wavevector. We show that topological magnon bands are absent in this coplanar spin texture in sharp contrast to collinear ferromagnets with DMI. Hence, geometrically frustrated Kagomé antiferromagnets can be deemed topologically trivial. The presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field in these frustrated magnets induces noncoplanar spin textures exhibiting a nonzero spin scalar chirality. We show that the field-induced spin chirality provides topological magnon bands in Kagomé antiferromagnets without the need of DMI and survives in the chiral spin liquid phase of frustrated magnets. Possible experimentally material includes iron jarosite KFe$_3$(OH)$_{6}$(SO$_{4}$)$_2$.

Magnon Hall Effect without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Topological magnon bands and magnon Hall effect in insulating collinear ferromagnets are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) even at zero magnetic field. In the geometrically frustrated star lattice, a coplanar/noncollinear $\mathbf q=0$ magnetic ordering may be present due to spin frustration. This magnetic structure, however, does not exhibit topological magnon effects even with DMI in contrast to collinear ferromagnets. We show that a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the star plane induces a non-coplanar spin configuration with nonzero spin scalar chirality, which provides topological effects without the need of DMI. The non-coplanar spin texture originates from the topology of the spin configurations and does not need the presence of DMI or magnetic ordering, which suggests that this phenomenon may be present in the chiral spin liquid phases of frustrated magnetic systems. We propose that these anomalous topological magnon effects can be accessible in Polymeric Iron (III) Acetate --- a star-lattice antiferromagnet with both spin frustration and long-range magnetic ordering.

Chirality-induced magnon transport in AA-stacked bilayer honeycomb chiral magnets

In this Letter, we study the magnetic transport in AA-stacked bilayer honeycomb chiral magnets coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. For both couplings, we observe chirality-induced gaps, chiral protected edge states, magnon Hall and magnon spin Nernst effects of magnetic spin excitations. For ferromagnetically coupled layers, thermal Hall and spin Nernst conductivities do not change sign as function of magnetic field or temperature similar to single-layer honeycomb ferromagnetic insulator. In contrast, for antiferromagnetically coupled layers, we observe a sign change in the thermal Hall and spin Nernst conductivities as the magnetic field is reversed. We discuss possible experimental accessible honeycomb bilayer quantum materials in which these effects can be observed.

Ground state properties of quantum Kagome ice hardcore bosons

We study the quantum Kagomé ice hardcore bosons, which corresponds to the XY limit of quantum spin ice Hamiltonian. We estimate the values of the zero-temperature thermodynamic quantities using the large-$S$ expansion. We show that our semi-classical analysis is consistent with finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo estimates.

Magnon edge states in hardcore-Bose-Hubbard model

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation has uncovered nonzero Berry curvature and bosonic edge states in hardcore-Bose-Hubbard model on the gapped honeycomb lattice. The competition between the chemical potential and staggered onsite potential leads to an interesting quantum phase diagram comprising superfluid phase, Mott insulator, and charge density wave insulator. In this paper, we present a semiclassical perspective of this system by mapping to a spin-$1/2$ quantum XY model. We give an explicit analytical origin of the quantum phase diagram, the Berry curvatures, and the edge states using semiclassical approximations. We find very good agreements between the semiclassical analyses and the QMC results. Our results show that the topological properties of hardcore-Bose-Hubbard model are the same as those of magnon in the corresponding quantum spin system. Our results are applicable to systems of ultracold bosonic atoms trapped in honeycomb optical lattices.

Magnon Hall effect in AB-stacked bilayer honeycomb quantum magnets

Motivated by the fact that many bilayer quantum magnets occur in nature, we generalize the study of thermal Hall transports of spin excitations to bilayer magnetic systems. It is shown that bilayer magnetic systems can be coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. We study both scenarios on the honeycomb lattice and show that the system realizes topologically nontrivial magnon bands induced by alternating next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a result, the bilayer system realizes both magnon Hall effect and magnon spin Nernst effect. We show that antiferromagnetically coupled layers differ from ferromagnetically coupled layers by a sign change in the conductivities as the magnetic field is reversed. Furthermore, Chern number protected magnon edge states are observed and propagate in the same direction on the top and bottom layers in ferromagnetically coupled layers, whereas the magnon edge states propagate in opposite directions for antiferromagnetically coupled layers.

Topological honeycomb magnon Hall effect: A calculation of thermal Hall conductivity of magnetic spin excitations

Quite recently, magnon Hall effect of spin excitations has been observed experimentally on the kagome and pyrochlore lattices. Thermal Hall conductivity $κ^{xy}$, changes sign as a function of magnetic field or temperature on the kagome lattice, and $κ^{xy}$ changes sign upon reversing the sign of the magnetic field on the pyrochlore lattice. Motivated by these recent exciting experimental observations, we theoretically propose a simple realization of magnon Hall effect in a two-band model on the honeycomb lattice. The magnon Hall effect of spin excitations arises in the usual way via the breaking of inversion symmetry of the lattice, however, by a next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction. We find that $κ^{xy}$ has a fixed sign for all parameter regimes considered. These results are in contrast to the Lieb, kagome and pyrochlore lattices. We further show that the low-temperature dependence on the magnon Hall conductivity follows a $T^{2}$ law, as opposed to the kagome and pyrochlore lattices. These results suggest an experimental procedure to measure thermal Hall conductivity within a class of 2D honeycomb quantum magnets and ultracold atoms trapped in honeycomb optical lattice.

A first theoretical realization of honeycomb topological magnon insulator

It has been recently shown that in the Heisenberg (anti)ferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice, the magnons (spin wave quasipacticles) realize a massless two-dimensional (2D) Dirac-like Hamiltonian. It was shown that the Dirac magnon Hamiltonian preserves time-reversal symmetry defined with the sublattice pseudo spins and the Dirac points are robust against magnon-magnon interactions. The Dirac points also occur at nonzero energy. In this paper, we propose a simple realization of nontrivial topology (magnon edge states) in this system. We show that the Dirac points are gapped when the inversion symmetry of the lattice is broken by introducing a next-nearest neighbour Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Thus, the system realizes magnon edge states similar to Haldane model for quantum anomalous Hall effect in electronic systems. However, in contrast to electronic spin current where dissipation can be very large due to Ohmic heating, noninteracting topological magnons can propagate for long time without dissipation as magnons are uncharged particles. We observe the same magnon edge states for the XY model on the honeycomb lattice. Remarkably, in this case the model maps to interacting hardcore bosons on the honeycomb lattice. Quantum magnetic systems with nontrivial magnon edge states are called topological magnon insulators. They have been studied theoretically on the kagome lattice and recently observed experimentally on the kagome magnet Cu(1-3, bdc) with three magnon bulk bands. Our results for the honeycomb lattice suggests an experimental procedure to search for honeycomb topological magnon insulators within a class of 2D quantum magnets and ultracold atoms trapped in honeycomb optical lattices.

Topological hard-core bosons on the honeycomb lattice

This paper presents a connection between the topological properties of hardcore bosons and that of magnons in quantum spin magnets. We utilize the Haldane-like hardcore bosons on the honeycomb lattice as an example. We show that this system maps to a spin-$1/2$ quantum XY model with a next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. We obtain the magnon excitations of the quantum spin model and compute the edge states, Berry curvature, thermal and spin Nernst conductivities. Due to the mapping from spin variables to bosons, the hardcore bosons possess the same nontrivial topological properties as those in quantum spin system. These results are important in the study of magnetic excitations in quantum magnets and they are also useful for understanding the control of ultracold bosonic quantum gases in honeycomb optical lattices, which is experimentally accessible.

XY ring exchange model with frustrated Ising coupling on the triangular lattice

We investigate the nature of a $Z_2$-invariant XY ring-exchange interaction with a frustrated Ising coupling on the triangular lattice. In the limit of pure XY ring-exchange interaction, we show that the classical ground state is degenerate resulting from the $Z_2$-invariance of the Hamiltonian. Quantum fluctuations lift these classical degenerate ground states and produce an unusual state whose excitation spectrum exhibits a gapped maximum quadratic dispersion near ${\bf k}=0$ and vanishes at the midpoints of each side of the Brillouin zone. This result is in contrast to a gapless quadratic dispersion near ${\bf k}=0$ in the U(1)-invariant counterpart. We also study the effects of frustration when competing with a classically frustrated Ising interaction. We provide a glimpse into the possible quantum phases that could emerge. A comprehensive understanding of this Hamiltonian, however, cannot be elucidated analytically and requires an explicit numerical simulation.

Ground state properties of quantum triangular ice

Motivated by recent quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of the quantum Kagome ice model by Juan Carrasquilla, et al., [Nature Communications 6, 7421 (2015)], we study the ground state properties of this model on the triangular lattice. In the presence of a magnetic field $h$, the Hamiltonian possesses competing interactions between a $Z_2$-invariant easy-axis ferromagnetic interaction $J_{\pm\pm}$ and a frustrated Ising term $J_z$. As in the U(1)-invariant model, we obtain four classical distinctive phases, however, the classical phases in the $Z_2$-invariant model are different. They are as follows: a fully polarized (FP) ferromagnet for large $h$, an easy-axis canted ferromagnet (CFM) with broken $Z_2$ symmetry for small $h$ and dominant $J_{\pm\pm}$, a {\it ferrosolid} phase with broken translational and $Z_2$ symmetries for small $h$ and dominant $J_{z}$, and two lobes with $m=\langle S_z\rangle=\pm 1/6$ for small $h$ and dominant $J_{z}$. We show that quantum fluctuations are suppressed in this model, hence the large-$S$ expansion gives an accurate picture of the ground state properties. When quantum fluctuations are introduced, we show that the {\it ferrosolid} state is the ground state in the dominant Ising limit at zero magnetic field. It remains robust for $J_z\to\infty$. With nonzero magnetic field the classical lobes acquire a finite magnetic susceptibility with no $S_z$-order. We present the trends of the ground state energy and the magnetizations. We also present a detail analysis of the CFM.
