Topological Order and Absence of Band Insulators at Integer Filling in Non-Symmorphic Crystals

Band insulators appear in a crystalline system only when the filling -- the number of electrons per unit cell and spin projection -- is an integer. At fractional filling, an insulating phase that preserves all symmetries is a Mott insulator, i.e. it is either gapless or, if gapped, displays fractionalized excitations and topological order. We raise the inverse question -- at an integer filling is a band insulator always possible? Here we show that lattice symmetries may forbid a band insulator even at certain integer fillings, if the crystal is non-symmorphic -- a property shared by a majority of three-dimensional crystal structures. In these cases, one may infer the existence of topological order if the ground state is gapped and fully symmetric. This is demonstrated using a non-perturbative flux threading argument, which has immediate applications to quantum spin systems and bosonic insulators in addition to electronic band structures in the absence of spin-orbit interactions.

Observation of Coherent Helimagnons and Gilbert damping in an Itinerant Magnet

We study the magnetic excitations of itinerant helimagnets by applying time-resolved optical spectroscopy to Fe0.8Co0.2Si. Optically excited oscillations of the magnetization in the helical state are found to disperse to lower frequency as the applied magnetic field is increased; the fingerprint of collective modes unique to helimagnets, known as helimagnons. The use of time-resolved spectroscopy allows us to address the fundamental magnetic relaxation processes by directly measuring the Gilbert damping, revealing the versatility of spin dynamics in chiral magnets. A Bionic Coulomb Phase on the Pyrochlore Lattice

A class of three dimensional classical lattice systems with macroscopic ground state degeneracies, most famously the spin ice system, are known to exhibit "Coulomb" phases wherein long wavelength correlations within the ground state manifold are described by an emergent Maxwell electrodynamics. We discuss a new example of this phenomenon-the four state Potts model on the pyrochlore lattice-where the long wavelength description now involves three independent gauge fields as we confirm via simulation. The excitations above the ground state manifold are bions, defects that are simultaneously charged under two of the three gauge fields, and exhibit an entropic interaction dictated by these charges. We also show that the distribution of flux loops shows a scaling with loop length and system size previously identified as characteristic of Coulomb phases.

A Typology for Quantum Hall Liquids

There is a close analogy between the response of a quantum Hall liquid (QHL) to a small change in the electron density and the response of a superconductor to an externally applied magnetic flux - an analogy which is made concrete in the Chern-Simons Landau-Ginzburg (CSLG) formulation of the problem. As the Types of superconductor are distinguished by this response, so too for QHLs: a typology can be introduced which is, however, richer than that in superconductors owing to the lack of any time-reversal symmetry relating positive and negative fluxes. At the boundary between Type I and Type II behavior, the CSLG action has a "Bogomol'nyi point," where the quasi-holes (vortices) are non-interacting - at the microscopic level, this corresponds to the behavior of systems governed by a set of model Hamiltonians which have been constructed to render exact a large class of QHL wavefunctions. All Types of QHLs are capable of giving rise to quantized Hall plateaux.

Fractional Chern Insulators and the W-Infinity Algebra

A set of recent results indicates that fractionally filled bands of Chern insulators in two dimensions support fractional quantum Hall states analogous to those found in fractionally filled Landau levels. We provide an understanding of these results by examining the algebra of Chern band projected density operators. We find that this algebra closes at long wavelengths and for constant Berry curvature, whereupon it is isomorphic to the W-Infinity algebra of lowest Landau level projected densities first identified by Girvin, MacDonald and Platzman [Phys. Rev. B 33, 2481 (1986).] For Hamiltonians projected to the Chern band this provides a route to replicating lowest Landau level physics on the lattice.

Charge Transport in Weyl Semimetals

We study transport in three dimensional Weyl semimetals with N isotropic Weyl nodes in the presence of Coulomb interactions or disorder at temperature T. In the interacting clean limit, we determine the conductivity by solving a quantum Boltzmann equation within a `leading log' approximation and find it to be proportional to T, upto logarithmic factors arising from the flow of couplings. In the noninteracting disordered case, we compute the finite-frequency Kubo conductivity and show that it exhibits distinct behaviors for omega << T and omega >> T: in the former regime we recover the results of a previous analysis, of a finite conductivity and a Drude width that vanishes as NT^2; in the latter, we find a conductivity that vanishes linearly with omega whose leading contribution as T -> 0 is the same as that of the clean, non-interacting system sigma(omega, T=0) = N(e^2/12h)(|omega|/v_F). We compare our results to experimental data on Y2Ir2O7 and also comment on the possible relevance to recent transport data on Eu2Ir2O7.

The Weakly Coupled Pfaffian as a Type I Quantum Hall Liquid

The Pfaffian phase of electrons in the proximity of a half-filled Landau level is understood to be a p+ip superconductor of composite fermions. We consider the properties of this paired quantum Hall phase when the pairing scale is small, i.e. in the weak-coupling, BCS, limit, where the coherence length is much larger than the charge screening length. We find that, as in a Type I superconductor, the vortices attract so that, upon varying the magnetic field from its magic value at ν=5/2, the system exhibits Coulomb frustrated phase separation. We propose that the weakly and strongly coupled Pfaffian states exemplify a general dichotomy between Type I and Type II quantum Hall fluids.

The Renormalization Group and the Superconducting Susceptibility of a Fermi Liquid

A free Fermi gas has, famously, a superconducting susceptibility that diverges logarithmically at zero temperature. In this paper we ask whether this is still true for a Fermi liquid and find that the answer is that it does {\it not}. From the perspective of the renormalization group for interacting fermions, the question arises because a repulsive interaction in the Cooper channel is a marginally irrelevant operator at the Fermi liquid fixed point and thus is also expected to infect various physical quantities with logarithms. Somewhat surprisingly, at least from the renormalization group viewpoint, the result for the superconducting susceptibility is that two logarithms are not better than one. In the course of this investigation we derive a Callan-Symanzik equation for the repulsive Fermi liquid using the momentum-shell renormalization group, and use it to compute the long-wavelength behavior of the superconducting correlation function in the emergent low-energy theory. We expect this technique to be of broader interest.

Nematic Valley Ordering in Quantum Hall Systems

The interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneously broken "internal" symmetries in two-dimensional electron systems with spin or pseudospin degrees of freedom gives rise to a variety of interesting phenomena, including novel phases, phase transitions, and topological excitations. Here we develop a theory of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states, applicable to a class of multi-valley systems, where the symmetry at issue is a point group element that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The anisotropy of the dispersion relation, generally present in such systems, favors states where all electrons reside in one of the valleys. In a clean system, the valley "pseudo-spin" ordering, or spatial nematic ordering, occurs via a finite temperature transition. In weakly disordered systems, domains of pseudo-spin polarization are formed, which prevents macroscopic valley and nematic ordering; however, the resulting state still asymptotically exhibits the QHE. We discuss the transport properties in the ordered and disordered regimes, and the relation of our results to recent experiments in AlAs.

AKLT Models with Quantum Spin Glass Ground States

We study AKLT models on locally tree-like lattices of fixed connectivity and find that they exhibit a variety of ground states depending upon the spin, coordination and global (graph) topology. We find a) quantum paramagnetic or valence bond solid ground states, b) critical and ordered Néel states on bipartite infinite Cayley trees and c) critical and ordered quantum vector spin glass states on random graphs of fixed connectivity. We argue, in consonance with a previous analysis, that all phases are characterized by gaps to local excitations. The spin glass states we report arise from random long ranged loops which frustrate Néel ordering despite the lack of randomness in the coupling strengths.

There are no Goldstone bosons on the Bethe lattice

We discuss symmetry breaking quantum phase transitions on the oft studied Bethe lattice in the context of the ferromagnetic scalar spherical model or, equivalently, the infinite $N_f$ limit of ferromagnetic models with $O(N_f)$ symmetry. We show that the approach to quantum criticality is characterized by the vanishing of a gap to just the global modes so that {\it all} local correlation functions continue to exhibit massive behavior. This behavior persists into the broken symmetry phase even as the order parameter develops an expectation value and thus there are no massless Goldstone bosons in the spectrum. We relate this feature to a spectral property of the graph Laplacian shared by the set of `expander' graphs, and argue that our results apply to symmetry breaking transitions on such graphs quite generally.

Charge 2e skyrmions in bilayer graphene

Quantum Hall states that result from interaction induced lifting of the eight-fold degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene are considered. We show that at even filling factors electric charge is injected into the system in the form of charge $2e$ skyrmions. This is a rare example of binding of charges in a system with purely repulsive interactions. We calculate the skyrmion energy and size as a function of the Zeeman interaction, and discuss signatures of the charge $2e$ skyrmions in the scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.
