Mapping the Galactic Halo. V. Sgr dSph Tidal Debris 60 degrees from the Main Body

As part of the Spaghetti Project Survey (SPS) we have detected a concentration of giant stars well above expectations for a smooth halo model. The position (l~350, b~50) and distance (~50 kpc) of this concentration match those of the Northern over-density detected by SDSS (Yanny et al. 2000, Ivezic et al. 2000). We find additional evidence for structure at ~80 kpc in the same direction. We present radial velocities for many of these stars, including the first published results from the 6.5m Magellan telescope. The radial velocities for stars in these structures are in excellent agreement with models of the dynamical evolution of the Sgr dwarf tidal debris, whose center is 60 degrees away. The metallicity of stars in these streams is lower than that of the main body of the Sgr dwarf, which may indicate a radial metallicity gradient prior to disruption.

Loose Groups of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

A ``friends-of-friends'' percolation algorithm has been used to extract a catalogue of dn/n = 80 density enhancements (groups) from the six slices of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The full catalogue contains 1495 groups and includes 35% of the LCRS galaxy sample. A clean sample of 394 groups has been derived by culling groups from the full sample which either are too close to a slice edge, have a crossing time greater than a Hubble time, have a corrected velocity dispersion of zero, or contain a 55-arcsec ``orphan'' (a galaxy with a mock redshift which was excluded from the original LCRS redshift catalogue due to its proximity to another galaxy -- i.e., within 55 arcsec). Median properties derived from the clean sample include: line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_los = 164km/s, crossing time t_cr = 0.10/H_0, harmonic radius R_h = 0.58/h Mpc, pairwise separation R_p = 0.64/h Mpc, virial mass M_vir = (1.90x10^13)/h M_sun, total group R-band luminosity L_tot = (1.30x10^11)/h^2 L_sun, and R-band mass-to-light ratio M/L = 171h M_sun/L_sun; the median number of observed members in a group is 3.

Groups of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

A "friends-of-friends" percolation algorithm has been used to extract a catalogue of drho/rho = 80 density enhancements (groups) from the six slices of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The full catalogue contains 1495 groups and includes 35% of the LCRS galaxy sample. A statistical sample of 394 groups has been derived by culling groups from the full sample which either are too close to a slice edge, have a crossing time greater than a Hubble time, have a corrected velocity dispersion of zero or less, or contain a 55 arcsec "orphan" (a galaxy with a "faked" redshift excluded from the original LCRS redshift catalogue due to its proximity --- i.e., within 55 arcsec --- of another galaxy). Median properties derived from the statistical sample include: line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_los = 164 km/s, crossing time t_cr = 0.10/H_0, harmonic radius R_h = 0.58/h Mpc, pairwise separation R_p = 0.64/h Mpc, virial mass M_vir = (1.90x10^13)/h M_sun, total group R-band luminosity L_tot = (1.40x10^11)/h^2 L_sun, and R-band mass-to-light ratio M/L = 153h M_sun/L_sun.

The Las Campanas Redshift Survey Galaxy-Galaxy Autocorrelation Function

Presented are measurements of the observed redshift-space galaxy-galaxy autocorrelation function, xi(s), for the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). For separations 2.0/h Mpc < s < 16.4/h Mpc, xi(s) can be approximated by a power law with slope of -1.52 +/- 0.03 and a correlation length of s_0 = (6.28 +\- 0.27)/h Mpc. A zero-crossing occurs on scales of roughly 30 - 40/h Mpc. On larger scales, xi(s) fluctuates closely about zero, indicating a high level of uniformity in the galaxy distribution on these scales. In addition, two aspects of the LCRS selection criteria - a variable field-to-field galaxy sampling rate and a 55 arcsec galaxy pair separation limit - are tested and found to have little impact on the measurement of xi(s). Finally, the LCRS xi(s) is compared with those from numerical simulations; it is concluded that, although the LCRS xi(s) does not discriminate sharply among modern cosmological models, redshift-space distortions in the LCRS xi(s) will likely provide a strong test of theory.

Chain Galaxies are Edge-On Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

Deep HST WFPC2 images have revealed a population of very narrow blue galaxies which Cowie et al. (1996) have interpreted as being a new morphological class of intrinsically linear star forming galaxies at $z=0.5-3$. We show that the same population exists in large numbers at low redshifts (z=0.03) and are actually the edge-on manifestation of low surface brightness disk galaxies.

The Environment of ``E+A'' Galaxies

The violent star formation history of ``E+A'' galaxies and their detection almost exclusively in distant clusters is frequently used to link them to the ``Butcher-Oemler effect'' and to argue that cluster environment influences galaxy evolution. From 11113 spectra in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, we have obtained a unique sample of 21 nearby ``E+A" galaxies. Surprisingly, a large fraction (about 75%) of these ``E+A''s lie in the field. Therefore, interactions with the cluster environment, in the form of the ICM or cluster potential, are not essential for ``E+A'' formation. If one mechanism is responsible for ``E+A''s, their existence in the field and the tidal features in at least 5 of the 21 argue that galaxy-galaxy interactions and mergers are that mechanism. The most likely environments for such interactions are poor groups, which have lower velocity dispersions than clusters and higher galaxy densities than the field. In hierarchical models, groups fall into clusters in greater numbers at intermediate redshifts than they do today. Thus, the Butcher-Oemler effect may reflect the typical evolution of galaxies in groups and in the field rather than the influence of clusters on star formation in galaxies. This abstract is abridged.

The 2D Power Spectrum of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey: Detection of Excess Power on 100 h^{-1} Mpc Scales

We have measured the 2 dimensional (2D) power spectrum of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey on scales between 30 and 200 Mpc (q_0=0.5, H_o=100h km sec^{-1} Mpc^{-1}). Such an analysis is more sensitive to structure on scales > 50 Mpc than a full 3 dimensional analysis given the geometry of the survey. We find a strong peak in the power spectrum at approximately 100 Mpc relative to the smooth continuum expected from the best fit Cold Dark Matter model (Probability is 2.5x10^{-4} with Omega h = 0.3 assuming a Gaussian random field). This signal is detected in two independent directions on the sky and has been identified with numerous structures visible in the survey which appear as walls and voids. Therefore, we conclude that there exists a significant increase in power on this scale and that such structures are common features in the local universe, z <= 0.2.
