Nonequilibrium superconductivity in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7 thin films

We have measured the picosecond conductivity dynamics in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7 thin films from 0.3-2.0 terahertz. Our experimental technique measures the complex conductivity $σ_{re}(ω$) + i$σ_{im}(ω$) permitting the simultaneous observation of superconducting pair and quasiparticle dynamics. We emphasize aspects of the conductivity dynamics which extend our previous results. In particular, the recovery of $σ_{re}$ is faster than $σ_{im}$, and the recovery of $σ_{im}$ decreases with increasing frequency. This suggests another carrier relaxation pathway, in addition to superconducting pair recovery, following optical excitation.

Dimensionality effects on the Holstein polaron

Based on a recently developed variational method, we explore the properties of the Holstein polaron on an infinite lattice in $D$ dimensions, where $ 1 \le D \le 4$. The computational method converges as a power law, so that highly accurate results can be achieved with modest resources. We present the most accurate ground state energy (with no small parameter) ever published for polaron problems, 21 digits for the one-dimensional (1D) polaron at intermediate coupling. The dimensionality effects on polaron band dispersion, effective mass, and electron-phonon (el-ph) correlation functions are investigated in all coupling regimes. It is found that the crossover to large effective mass of the higher-dimensional polaron is much sharper than the 1D polaron. The correlation length between the electron and phonons decreases significantly as the dimension increases. Our results compare favorably with those of quantum Monte Carlo, dynamical mean-field theory, density-matrix renormalization group, and the Toyozawa variational method. We demonstrate that the Toyozawa wavefunction is qualitatively correct for the ground state energy and the 2-point electron-phonon correlation functions, but fails for the 3-point functions. Based on this finding, we propose an improved Toyozawa variational wavefunction.

Carrier relaxation dynamics in heavy fermion compounds

The first femtosecond carrier relaxation dynamics studies in heavy fermion compounds are presented. The carrier relaxation time shows a dramatic hundred-fold increase below the Kondo temperature revealing a dramatic sensitivity to the electronic density of states near the Fermi level.

Bipolarons in the Extended Holstein Hubbard Model

We numerically and analytically calculate the properties of the bipolaron in an extended Hubbard Holstein model, which has a longer range electron-phonon coupling like the Fr\" ohlich model. In the strong coupling regime, the effective mass of the bipolaron in the extended model is much smaller than the Holstein bipolaron mass. In contrast to the Holstein bipolaron, the bipolaron in the extended model has a lower binding energy and remains bound with substantial binding energy even in the large-U limit. In comparison with the Holstein model where only a singlet bipolaron is bound, in the extended Holstein model a triplet bipolaron can also form a bound state. We discuss the possibility of phase separation in the case of finite electron doping.

Mobile Bipolaron

We explore the properties of the bipolaron in a 1D Holstein-Hubbard model with dynamical quantum phonons. Using a recently developed variational method combined with analytical strong coupling calculations, we compute correlation functions, effective mass, bipolaron isotope effect and the phase diagram. The two site bipolaron has a significantly reduced mass and isotope effect compared to the on-site bipolaron, and is bound in the strong coupling regime up to twice the Hubbard U naively expected. The model can be described in this regime as an effective t-J-V model with nearest neighbor repulsion. These are the most accurate bipolaron calculations to date.

The Holstein Polaron

We describe a variational method to solve the Holstein model for an electron coupled to dynamical, quantum phonons on an infinite lattice. The variational space can be systematically expanded to achieve high accuracy with modest computational resources (12-digit accuracy for the 1d polaron energy at intermediate coupling). We compute ground and low-lying excited state properties of the model at continuous values of the wavevector $k$ in essentially all parameter regimes. Our results for the polaron energy band, effective mass and correlation functions compare favorably with those of other numerical techniques including DMRG, Global Local and exact diagonalization. We find a phase transition for the first excited state between a bound and unbound system of a polaron and an additional phonon excitation. The phase transition is also treated in strong coupling perturbation theory.

Persistent Current in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

In this paper, we study the zero temperature persistent current in a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in the strong coupling limit. In this model, there are spontaneous spin textures at some values of the external magnetic flux. These spin textures contribute a geometric flux, which can induce an additional spontaneous persistent current. Since this spin texture changes with the external magnetic flux, we find that there is an anomalous persistent current in some region of magnetic flux: near Phi/Phi_0=0 for an even number of electrons and Phi/Phi_0=1/2 for an odd number of electrons.

On the Lifshitz tail in the density of states of a superconductor with magnetic impurities

We argue that any superconductor with magnetic impurities is gapless due to a Lifshitz tail in the density of states extending to zero energy. At low energy the density of states $ν(E \to 0)$ remains finite. We show that fluctuations in the impurity distribution produce regions of suppressed superconductivity, which are responsible for the low energy density of states.

Inelastic Quantum Transport

We solve a Schrodinger equation for inelastic quantum transport that retains full quantum coherence, in contrast to previous rate or Boltzmann equation approaches. The model Hamiltonian is the zero temperature 1d Holstein model for an electron coupled to optical phonons (polaron), in a strong electric field. The Hilbert space grows exponentially with electron position, forming a non-standard Bethe lattice. We calculate nonperturbatively the transport current, electron-phonon correlations, and quantum diffusion. This system is a toy model for the constantly branching ``wavefunction of the universe''.

Low Temperature Magnetic Properties of the Double Exchange Model

We study the {\it ferromagnetic} (FM) Kondo lattice model in the strong coupling limit (double exchange (DE) model). The DE mechanism proposed by Zener to explain ferromagnetism has unexpected properties when there is more than one itinerant electron. We find that, in general, the many-body ground state of the DE model is {\it not} globally FM ordered (except for special filled-shell cases). Also, the low energy excitations of this model are distinct from spin wave excitations in usual Heisenberg ferromagnets, which will result in unusual dynamic magnetic properties.

Local Antiferromagnetic Correlations and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Pairing

The high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors doped near half-filling have short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Here we describe an intuitive local picture of why, if pairing occurs in the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations, the orbital state will have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry.

The effect of inelastic processes on tunneling

We study an electron that interacts with phonons or other linear or nonlinear excitations as it resonantly tunnels. The method we use is based on mapping a many-body problem in a large variational space exactly onto a one-body problem. The method is conceptually simpler than previous Green's function approaches, and allows the essentially exact numerical solution of much more general problems. We solve tunneling problems with transverse channels, multiple sites coupled to phonons, and multiple phonon degrees of freedom and excitations.

A Spin Model for Investigating Chirality

Spin chirality has generated great interest recently both from possible applications to flux phases and intrinsically, as an example of a several-site magnetic order parameter that can be long-ranged even where simpler order parameters are not. Previous work (motivated by the flux phases) has focused on antiferromagnetic chiral order; we construct a model in which the chirality orders ferromagnetically and investigate the model's behavior as a function of spin. Enlisting the aid of exact diagonalization, spin-waves, perturbation theory, and mean fields, we conclude that the model likely has long-ranged chiral order for spins 1 and greater and no non-trivial chiral order for spin 1/2.

Correlations for the S=1/2 Antiferromagnet on a Truncated Tetrahedron

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Hamiltonian is investigated on a truncated tetrahedron, which is a closed 12 site system. We find that the ground state has many similarities to that of $C_{60}$. We study 2- and 4-spin correlations in the classical ground state of the truncated tetrahedron and calculate the same correlations in the exact S=1/2 ground state. We find that the classical correlations survive for a range of bond strengths in the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and that one can construct a good trial wavefunction based on the classical ground state. This suggests that the correlations present in the classical ground state of $C_{60}$ also survive in the exact ground state of that system, for a range of bond strengths about the physically relevant $J_2 \approx J_1$. We calculate the momentum-space correlation function $S ( q )$, which is measurable by neutron scattering, for both $C_{12}$ and $C_{60}$. We also calculate correlations at finite temperature.

Magnetic Properties of Undoped $C_{60}$

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet, which arises from the large $U$ Hubbard model, is investigated on the $C_{60}$ molecule and other fullerenes. The connectivity of $C_{60}$ leads to an exotic classical ground state with nontrivial topology. We argue that there is no phase transition in the Hubbard model as a function of $U/t$, and thus the large $U$ solution is relevant for the physical case of intermediate coupling. The system undergoes a first order metamagnetic phase transition. We also consider the S=1/2 case using perturbation theory. Experimental tests are suggested.
