Gravitational and other shifts of whispering gallery and gravitational state interference patterns of light neutral particles

We discuss small shifts in the interference patterns of gravitational and whispering gallery quantum states that can be observed with neutrons, atoms, antiatoms, muonium, positronium, and other particles. A gravitational shift of interference patterns of neutron gravitational and whispering-gallery states can be easily observed with cold, very cold, or ultracold neutrons. The developed methods can be used for observing/searching for other shifts in fundamental neutron physics experiments, for instance, for measuring the gravitational constant or constraining the neutron electric charge. A series of such measurements will be made with neutrons at the PF1B/PF2/D17 facilities at the ILL. A peculiar feature of analogous atomic (anti-atomic) experiments is the much smaller effective critical energies of the materials of mirrors for (anti)atoms. We evaluated parameters that make a measurement of the hydrogen and antihydrogen whispering-gallery states and their gravitational shifts feasible. A series of such measurements will be made with hydrogen and deuterium atoms by the GRASIAN collaboration in Vienna and Turku. Such a measurement with antihydrogen atoms may be of interest for the GBAR experiment, the ASACUSA experiment, which is producing a beam of slow antihydrogen atoms, and other experiments at CERN, which study the gravitational properties of antimatter. Quantum reflection of muonium and positronium from material surfaces opens the possibility of observing whispering-galley states, although such measurements remain experimentally challenging. Because of small masses of muonium and positronium, the effective critical energies of the mirror materials are much higher for them than the effective critical energies for hydrogen and other atoms. The observation of gravitational shifts of such states is particularly demanding because of the extremely short lifetimes of these systems.

Neutron-induced opalescence in silica glass

Light scattering intensity distribution along the optical fiber length is analyzed, which was measured by optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) during and after fiber irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The OTDR traces prove to contain two components associated with either radiation-induced attenuation (RIA), or with Rayleigh scattering coefficient (RSC) variation. The RSC increase effect in the first stage of fast-neutron irradiation is argued to be similar to the anomalous scattering buildup near the critical point of the liquid-vapor transition known as critical opalescence. For his reason, the RSC increase due to fast-neutron irradiation can be named neutron-induced opalescence (NIO).

Helical Bragg gratings: experimental verification of light orbital angular momentum conversion

Structured light, in particular light possessing orbital angular momentum (OAM), has been actively studied in recent decades. Helical Bragg grating (HBG) is a reflecting optical element, which predicted to be able to convert the OAM of light in waveguides and fibers. However, the HBG has not been demonstrated experimentally yet. Here we report the first experimental manifestation of HBG created in the form of a waveguide with depressed-index cladding. Few-mode channel helical-depressed-cladding waveguides (HDCWs) have been written in a YAG crystal by a femtosecond laser beam. The HDCW pitches were comparable to near-IR wavelengths. The spectral and polarization characteristics of the transmitted and reflected light have been studied. It was shown that HDCWs behave like HBGs providing narrowband resonance coupling of the counter propagating modes, the OAM of the modes differing by the Bragg order or, what is the same, the topological charge of the helical cladding structure. Adjusting the HDCW parameters allows one to excite a reflected wave at the predetermined wavelength and with the predetermined OAM change with respect to the light coupled to the waveguide. Thus, for the first time, the HBGs suitable for the generation and filtration of the vortex light have been experimentally demonstrated. The experimental results obtained agree well with the coupled mode theory calculations.

A magneto-gravitational trap for precision studies of gravitational quantum states

Observation time is the key parameter for improving the precision of measurements of gravitational quantum states of particles levitating above a reflecting surface. We propose a new method of long confinement in such states of atoms, anti-atoms, neutrons and other particles possessing a magnetic moment. The Earth gravitational field and a reflecting mirror confine particles in the vertical direction. The magnetic field originating from electric current passing through a vertical wire confines particles in the radial direction. Under appropriate conditions, motions along these two directions are decoupled to a high degree. We estimate characteristic parameters of the problem, and list possible systematic effects that limit storage times due to the coupling of the two motions. In the limit of low particle velocities and magnetic fields, precise control of the particle motion and long storage times in the trap can provide ideal conditions for both gravitational, optical and hyperfine spectroscopy: for the sensitive verification of the equivalence principle for antihydrogen atoms; for increasing the accuracy of optical and hyperfine spectroscopy of atoms and antiatoms; for improving constraints on extra fundamental interactions from experiments with neutrons, atoms and antiatoms.
