Fully differential cross sections for singly ionizing 1-Mev p+He collisions at small momentum transfer: Beyond the first Born approximation

We present calculations of the electron angular distributions in the single ionization of helium by 1-MeV proton impact at momentum transfer of 0.75 a.u. and ejected-electron energy of 6.5 eV. The results using the first and second Born approximations and the 3C model with different trial helium functions are compared to the experimental data. A good agreement between theory and experiment is found in the case of the 3C final state and a strongly correlated helium wave function. The electron-electron correlations in the He atom are found to influence the ratio of the binary and recoil peak intensities.

Agreement at last: an experimental and theoretical study on the single ionization of helium by fast proton impact

Even though ion/atom-collision is a mature field of atomic physics great discrepancies between experiment and theoretical calculations are still common. Here we present experimental results with highest momentum resolution on single ionization of helium induced by 1\,MeV protons and compare these to different theoretical calculations. The overall agreement is strikingly good and already the first Born approximation yields good agreement between theory and experiment. This has been expected since several decades, but so far has not been accomplished. The influence of projectile coherence effects on the measured data is shortly discussed in line with an ongoing dispute on the existence of nodal structures in the electron angular emission distributions.

Quasi Sturmian Basis in Two-Electron Continuum Problems

A new type of basis functions is proposed to describe a two-electron continuum which arises as a final state in electron-impact ionization and double photoionization of atomic systems. We name these functions, which are calculated in terms of the recently introduced Quasi Sturmian functions, Convoluted Quasi Sturmian functions (CQS). By construction, the CQS functions look asymptotically like a six-dimensional spherical wave. The driven equation describing an $(e, 3e)$ process on helium in the framework of the Temkin-Poet model has been solved numerically using expansions on the basis CQS functions. The convergence behavior of the solution has been examined as the size of the basis has been increased. The calculations show that the convergence rate is significantly improved by introducing a phase factor corresponding the electron-electron interaction into the basis functions. Such a modification of the boundary conditions leads to appreciable change in the magnitude of the solution.

Parabolic Sturmians approach to the three-body continuum Coulomb problem

The three-body continuum Coulomb problem is treated in terms of the generalized parabolic coordinates. Approximate solutions are expressed in the form of a Lippmann-Schwinger type equation, where the Green's function includes the leading term of the kinetic energy and the total potential energy, whereas the potential contains the non-orthogonal part of the kinetic energy operator. As a test of this approach, the integral equation for the $(e^-,\, e^-,\, {{He}^{++}})$ system is solved numerically by using the parabolic Sturmian basis representation of the (approximate) potential. Convergence of the expansion coefficients of the solution is obtained as the basis set used to describe the potential is enlarged.

Application of the $J$-matrix Method to Faddeev-Merkuriev equation: beyond pseudostates

A version of the $J$-matrix method for solving numerically the three-body Faddeev-Merkuriev differential equations is proposed. This version allows to take into account the full spectrum of the two-body Coulomb subsystem. As a result, a discrete analog of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation is obtained which allows to interpret correctly the three-body wave function in two-body domains. The scheme is applied to calculations of the fully resolved absolute differential cross sections for the He$(e,2e)$He$^+$ and He$(e,3e)$He$^{++}$ reactions at small energy and momentum transfers. The results are in good agreement with the experiment both in shape and in absolute value.

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in the $J$-matrix inverse scattering approach and few-nucleon systems

The nucleon-nucleon interaction is constructed by means of the $J$-matrix version of inverse scattering theory. Ambiguities of the interaction are eliminated by postulating tridiagonal and quasi-tridiagonal forms of the potential matrix in the oscillator basis in uncoupled and coupled waves, respectively. The obtained interaction is very accurate in reproducing the $NN$ scattering data and deuteron properties. The interaction is used in the no-core shell model calculations of $^3$H and $^4$He nuclei. The resulting binding energies of $^3$H and $^4$He are very close to experimental values.

$J$-matrix and Isolated States

We show that a quantum system with nonlocal interaction can have bound states of unusual type -- Isolated States (IS). IS is a bound state that is not in correspondence with the $S$-matrix pole. IS can have a positive as well as a negative energy and can be treated as a generalization of the bound states embedded in continuum on the case of discrete spectrum states. The formation of IS in the spectrum of a quantum system is studied using a simple rank--2 separable potential with harmonic oscillator form factors. Some physical applications are discussed, in particular, we propose a separable $NN$ potential supporting IS that describes the deuteron binding energy and the s-wave triplet and singlet scattering phase shifts. We use this potential to examine the so-called problem of the three-body bound state collapse discussed in literature. We show that the variation of the two-body IS energy causes drastic changes of the binding energy and of the spectrum of excited states of the three-nucleon system.

P-matrix and J-matrix approaches. Coulomb asymptotics in the harmonic oscillator representation of scattering theory

The relation between the R- and P-matrix approaches and the harmonic oscillator representation of the quantum scattering theory (J-matrix method) is discussed. We construct a discrete analogue of the P-matrix that is shown to be equivalent to the usual P-matrix in the quasiclassical limit. A definition of the natural channel radius is introduced. As a result, it is shown to be possible to use well-developed technique of R- and P-matrix theory for calculation of resonant states characteristics, scattering phase shifts, etc., in the approaches based on harmonic oscillator expansions, e.g., in nuclear shell-model calculations. P-matrix is used also for formulation of the method of treating Coulomb asymptotics in the scattering theory in oscillator representation.

Isolated States

We show that a quantum system with nonlocal interaction can have bound states of unusual type (isolated states (IS)). IS is a bound state that do not generate a $S$-matrix pole. IS can have positive as well as negative energy and can be treated as a generalization of bound states embedded in continuum on the case of discrete spectrum states. Formation of IS in the spectrum of quantum system is studied using a simple rank--2 separable potential with harmonic oscillator formfactors. Some physical applications are discussed, in particular, we propose separable $NN$ potential that describes not only most important two-nucleon data (deuteron binding energy and s-wave triplet and singlet scattering phases) but also the trinucleon binding energy without making use of three-body forces.
