Pseudo-Goldstone mode in altermagnetic $α$-MnTe: high-field electron spin resonance studies

We report multi-frequency electron spin resonance spectroscopy studies of $α$-MnTe in magnetic fields up to $16$ T, applied along the easy anisotropy axis. At temperatures below $T_\mathrm{N} = 310$ K, we observe a single resonance line corresponding to the pseudo-Goldstone mode of the antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). This mode exhibits the isotropic behavior with $g_\mathrm{eff}=2.01$, consistent with a complete quench of the orbital angular momenta for Mn$^{2+}$ ions. At low temperatures, the resonance mode is remarkably narrow ($\sim50$ mT for the full width at the half-maximum at $5$ K). The AFMR mode exhibits substantial broadening with increasing temperature, which can be understood in terms of the magnon-magnon scattering

Transverse order and longitudinal fluctuations in a near-Ising spin supersolid

We investigate the polarization of the ordered moments and low-energy spin fluctuations in the spin supersolid state of the S = 1/2 triangular-lattice easy-axis antiferromagnet K2Co(SeO3)2 using neutron scattering. The supersolid order develops through successive BKT transitions: the longitudinal order appears at higher temperature, while the transverse component associated with the Bose-Einstein condensate emerges only below a lower-temperature transition accompanied by a change in the interlayer correlations. At the lowest measured temperature, the transverse ordered moment reaches only 11% of the longitudinal component. Moreover, the low-energy spin fluctuations are found to be predominantly longitudinal in character. These results provide direct evidence that the supersolid ground state survives even in the near-Ising regime and exhibits longitudinal low-energy dynamics, imposing stringent constraints on microscopic theories of triangular-lattice XXZ antiferromagnets.

$\mathbb{Z}_2$ Vortex Crystal Candidate in the Triangular $S=1/2$ Quantum Antiferromagnet

The prospect of merging the paradigms of geometric frustration on a triangular lattice and bond anisotropies in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit holds tremendous promise in the ongoing hunt for exotic quantum materials. Here we identify a new candidate system to realize such physics, the organic quantum antiferromagnet (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$. We report a combination of thermodynamic, magneto-elastic and neutron scattering experiments on single-crystals to determine the phase diagram in axial magnetic fields $\mathbf{H \parallel c}$ and propose a minimal model Hamiltonian. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ displays an ideal triangular arrangement of Ru$^{3+}$ ions adopting the spin-orbital entangled $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ state. It hosts residual magnetic order below $T_{\rm N} = 0.23$ K and a highly unusual $H-T$ phase diagram including three different incommensurate states. Spin-waves in the high-field polarized regime are well described by a Heisenberg-like triangular lattice Hamiltonian with a potential sub-leading bond dependent anisotropy term $J_{\pm\pm}$. We discuss possible candidate magnetic structures in the various observed phases and propose two mechanisms that could explain the field-dependent incommensurability, requiring either a small ferromagnetic Kitaev term or a tiny magneto-elastic $J-J'$ isosceles distortion driven by pseudospin-lattice coupling. We argue that the multi-$\mathbf{q}$ ground state in zero magnetic field is a prime candidate for hosting the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystal proposed on the triangular Heisenberg-Kitaev model. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ is the first member in an extended family of quantum triangular lattice magnets, providing a new playground to study the interplay of geometric frustration and spin-orbit effects.

Pressure-Tuned Metamagnetism and Emergent Three-Body Interactions in CsFeCl$_3$

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_3$ under high magnetic fields and high pressure. Pulsed-field magnetization for the magnetic field along the symmetric $c$ direction at ambient pressure reveals a magnetization process from a nonmagnetic singlet ground state with a nearly linear increase between 3.7 and 10.7 T, a plateau-like region, and then a sharp stepwise metamagnetic transition near 32 T. Wide frequency--field range electron spin resonance indicates that the low-field regime originates from the $J = 1$ manifold, while the high-field metamagnetic transition suggests a level crossing between the $J = 1$ and $J = 2$ lowest states. Pulsed-field magnetic susceptibilities measured with a proximity detector oscillator under high pressure show that the low-field nonmagnetic singlet phase is gradually suppressed, while the high-field metamagnetic transition evolves into an increasingly rich pattern of fractional steps. While the observations at low to intermediate fields can be understood within the established spin-1 description, the high-field regime requires a new perspective, which we provide through a projected spin-1/2 framework built from Zeeman-selected crystal-field states not related by time reversal. This construction naturally allows emergent three-body interactions on triangular plaquettes and explains the asymmetric evolution of the fractional steps in the magnetization. Our findings reveal that high-field effective spin models in quantum magnets with separated yet accessible crystal-field multiplets are not constrained to even-body couplings, but can naturally host odd-body terms, opening a broader avenue for realizing field-asymmetric magnetization processes and exotic phases beyond conventional even-body physics.

Ultrasound measurement technique for the single-turn-coil magnets

Ultrasound is a powerful means to study numerous phenomena of condensed-matter physics as acoustic waves couple strongly to structural, magnetic, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we present such technique combined with single-turn coils (STC) which generate magnetic fields beyond 100 T with the typical pulse duration of 6 us. As a benchmark of this technique, the ultrasound results for MnCr2S4, Cu6[Si6O18]6H2O, and liquid oxygen are shown. The resolution for the relative sound-velocity change in the STC is estimated as Delta v/v~10^-3, which is sufficient to study various field-induced phase transitions and critical phenomena.

High-field magnetic properties of the alternating ferro-antiferromagnetic spin-chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br

We present comprehensive high magnetic field studies of the alternating weakly coupled ferro-antiferromagnetic (FM-AFM) spin-$1/2$ chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br, with the structure of the natural mineral botallackite. Our measurements reveal a broad magnetization plateau at about half of the saturation value, strongly suggesting that the FM chain sublattice becomes fully polarized, while the AFM chain sublattice remains barely magnetized, in magnetic fields at least up to $50$ T. We confirm a spin-reorientation transition for magnetic fields applied in the $ac^\ast$-plane, whose angular dependence is described in the framework of the mean-field theory. Employing high-field THz spectroscopy, we reveal a complex pattern of high-frequency spinon-magnon bound-state excitations. On the other hand, at lower frequencies we observe two modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, as a consequence of the long-range magnetic ordering. We demonstrate that applied magnetic field tends to suppress the long-range magnetic ordering; the temperature-field phase diagram of the phase transition is obtained for magnetic fields up to $14$ T for three principal directions ($a$, $b$, $c^\ast$).

Field-induced phase transitions and anisotropic magnetic properties of the Kiteav-Heisenberg compound Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Spin systems with honeycomb structures have recently attracted a great deal of attention in connection with the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state (QSL) predicted theoretically. One possible Kitaev QSL candidate is Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ realizing a honeycomb lattice of pseudo-spin-1/2. Field-dependent single-crystal neutron diffraction technique allows us to determine the microscopic spin-spin correlations across the field induced phase transitions for H//a and H//a* in plane field directions. Our results reveal phase transitions, initially to a canted zigzag antiferromagnetic state at approximately 60 kOe, followed by a possible transition to a partially polarized state over the range of 90-120 kOe, and finally to a field-induced fully polarized state above 120 kOe. We observe distinct field dependencies of the magnetic peak intensities for H//a and H//a*. In addition, low-temperature electron spin resonance in magnetic fields H//c yields a complete softening for one of the antiferromagnetic resonances at ~ 40 kOe, revealing a field-induced phase transition. The present work, thus, provides new insights into the field evolution of the important Kitaev-Heisenberg spin system Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$.

Dimensional reduction and incommensurate dynamic correlations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$

The observation of spinon excitations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$ reveals a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of magnetic correlations, in spite of the nominally 2D magnetic structure. This phenomenon is known as frustration-induced dimensional reduction. Here, we present high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization studies of Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$, allowing us not only to refine spin-Hamiltonian parameters, but also to investigate peculiarities of its low-energy spin dynamics. We argue that the presence of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) shifts the spinon continuum in momentum space and, as a result, opens a zero-field gap at the $Γ$ point. We observed this gap directly. The shift is found to be consistent with the structural modulation in the ordered state, suggesting this material as a perfect model triangular-lattice system, where a pure DMI-spiral ground state can be realized.

Emergent many-body composite excitations of interacting spin-1/2 trimers

Understanding exotic forms of magnetism in quantum spin systems is an emergent topic of modern condensed matter physics. Quantum dynamics can be described by particle-like carriers of information, known-as quasiparticles that appear from the collective behaviour of the underlying system. Spinon excitations, governing the excitations of quantum spin-systems, have been accurately calculated and precisely verified experimentally for the antiferromagnetic chain model. However, identification and characterization of novel quasiparticles emerging from the topological excitations of the spin system having periodic exchange interactions are yet to be obtained. Here, we report the identification of emergent composite excitations of the novel quasiparticles doublons and quartons in spin-1/2 trimer-chain antiferromagnet Na2Cu3Ge4O12 (having periodic intrachain exchange interactions J1-J1-J2) and its topologically protected quantum 1/3 magnetization-plateau state. The characteristic energies, dispersion relations, and dynamical structure factor of neutron scattering as well as macroscopic quantum 1/3 magnetization-plateau state are in good agreement with the state-of-the-art dynamical density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Antiferromagnetic resonance in the cubic iridium hexahalides (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$ and K$_2$IrCl$_6$

We report on high-field electron spin resonance studies of two iridium hexahalide compounds, (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$ and K$_2$IrCl$_6$. In the paramagnetic state, our measurements reveal isotropic $g$-factors $g = 1.79$(1) for the Ir$^{4+}$ ions, in agreement with their cubic symmetries. Most importantly, in the magnetically ordered state, we observe two magnon modes with zero-field gaps of 11.3 and 14.2 K for (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$ and K$_2$IrCl$_6$, respectively. Based on that and using linear spin-wave theory, we estimate the nearest-neighbor exchange couplings and anisotropic Kitaev interactions, $J_1/k_B=10.3$ K, $K/k_B=0.7$ K for (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$, and $J_1/k_B=13.8$ K, $K/k_B=0.9$ K for K$_2$IrCl$_6$, revealing the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg coupling as the leading interaction term, with only a weak Kitaev anisotropy.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu$_6[$Si$_6$O$_{18}]\cdot 6$H$_2$O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to $21~$T and magnetization measurements up to $30~$T. In zero field, the Cu$^{2+}$-moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the $c$-axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the $c$-axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at $B^*=12.2~$T at $1.5~$K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around $B^*$. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Extremely well isolated 2D spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg layers with small exchange coupling in the molecular-based magnet CuPOF

We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $μ^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T.

Nature of Magnetic Excitations in the High-Field Phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$

We present comprehensive electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of in-plane oriented single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, a quasi-two-dimensional material with honeycomb structure, focusing on its high-field spin dynamics. The measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 16 T, applied along the [110] and [100] directions. Several ESR modes were detected. Combining our findings with recent inelastic neutron- and Raman-scattering data, we identify most of the observed excitations. Most importantly, we show that the low-temperature ESR response beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region is dominated by single- and two-particle processes with magnons as elementary excitations. The peculiarities of the excitation spectrum in the vicinity of the critical field are discussed.

Spin-dimer ground state driven by consecutive charge and orbital ordering transitions in the anionic mixed-valence compound Rb$_4$O$_6$

Recently, a Verwey-type transition in the mixed-valence alkali sesquioxide Cs$_4$O$_6$ was deduced from the charge ordering of molecular peroxide O$_2^{2-}$ and superoxide O$_2^-$ anions accompanied by the structural transformation and a dramatic change in electronic conductivity [Adler et al, Sci. Adv 4, eaap7581 (2018)]. Here, we report that in the sister compound Rb$_4$O$_6$ a similar Verwey-type charge ordering transition is strongly linked to O$_2^-$ orbital and spin dynamics. On cooling, a powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals a charge ordering and a cubic-to-tetragonal transition at $T_{\rm CO}=290$ K, which is followed by a further structural instability at $T_{\rm s}=92$ K that involves an additional reorientation of magnetic O$_2^-$ anions. Magnetic resonance techniques supported by density functional theory computations suggest the emergence of a peculiar type of $π^*$-orbital ordering of the magnetically active O$_2^-$ units, which promotes the formation of a quantum spin state composed of weakly coupled spin dimers. These results reveal that similarly as in 3$d$ transition metal compounds, also in in the $π^*$ open-shell alkali sesquioxides the interplay between Jahn-Teller-like electron-lattice coupling and Kugel-Khomskii-type superexchange determines the nature of orbital ordering and the magnetic ground state.

Electron spin resonance study of spin relaxation in the strong-leg spin ladder with nonmagnetic dilution

We have studied electron spin resonance (ESR) absorption spectra for the nonmagnetically diluted strong-leg spin ladder magnet ({C}$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$Cu$_{(1-x)}$Zn$_{x}$Br$_{4}$ (abbreviated as DIMPY) down to 450 mK. Formation of the clusters with non-zero net magnetization is confirmed; the cluster-cluster interaction is evidenced by the concentration dependence of ESR absorption. High-temperature spin-relaxation time was found to increase with non-magnetic dilution. The ESR linewidth analysis proves that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction remains the dominant spin-relaxation channel in diluted DIMPY. Experimental data indicate that the dilution results in the weakening of the effective DM interaction, which can be interpreted as total suppression of DM interaction in the close vicinity of impurity atom.

Evidence of one-dimensional magnetic heat transport in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$

We report on low-temperature heat-transport properties of the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. Broad maxima in the thermal conductivity along the three principal axes, observed at about 5 K, are interpreted in terms of the Debye model, including the phonon Umklapp scattering. For thermal transport along the $b$ axis, we observed a pronounced field-dependent anomaly, close to the transition into the three-dimensional long-range-ordered state. No such anomalies were found for the transport along the $a$ and $c$ directions. We argue that this anisotropic behavior is related to an additional heat-transport channel through magnetic excitations, that can best propagate along the direction of the largest exchange interaction. Besides, peculiarities of the heat transport of Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above are discussed.

One- and three-dimensional quantum phase transitions and anisotropy in Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$

Single crystal samples of the frustrated quasi one-dimensional quantum magnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ are investigated by magnetic, thermodynamic, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. Quantum phase transitions between the gapped, magnetically ordered and fully saturated phases are observed. Surprisingly, the former has a distinctive three-dimensional character, while the latter is dominated by one-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations. The entire $H$-$T$ phase diagram is mapped out and found to be substantially anisotropic. In particular, the lower critical fields differ by over 50\% depending on the direction of applied field, while the upper ones are almost isotropic, as is the magnetization above saturation. The ESR spectra are strongly dependent on field orientation and point to a helical structure with a rigidly defined spin rotation plane.

Pronounced 2/3 magnetization plateau in a frustrated $S$ = 1 isolated spin-triangle compound: Interplay between Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange interactions

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theoretical modeling suggests that the 2/3 magnetization plateau emerges due to the interplay between antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange interactions within nearly isolated spin $S$ = 1 triangles.
