Random matrix analysis of the monopole strength distribution in $^{208}$Pb

We study statistical properties of the $0^+$ spectrum of $^{208}$Pb in the energy region $E_x\leq20$ MeV. We use the Skyrme interaction SLy4 as our model Hamiltonian to create a single-particle spectrum and to analyze excited states. The finite-rank separable approximation for the particle-hole interaction enables us to perform the calculations in large configuration spaces. We show that while the position of the monopole resonance centroid is determined by one phonon excitations of $0^+$, the phonon-phonon coupling is crucial for the description of a strength distribution of the $0^+$ spectrum. In fact, this coupling has an impact on the spectral rigidity $Δ_3(L)$ which is shifted towards the random matrix limit of the Gaussian orthogonal ensembles.

The ab initio no-core shell model

This contribution reviews a number of applications of the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) within nuclear physics and beyond. We will highlight a nuclear-structure study of the A = 12 isobar using a chiral NN + 3NF interaction. In the spirit of this workshop we will also mention the new development of the NCSM formalism to describe open channels and to approach the problem of nuclear reactions. Finally, we will illustrate the universality of the many-body problem by presenting the recent adaptation of the NCSM effective-interaction approach to study the many-boson problem in an external trapping potential with short-range interactions.

Quantum Chaos and Regularity in Ultracold Fermi Gases

Quantum fluctuation of the energy is studied for an ultracold gas of interacting fermions trapped in a three-dimensional potential. Periodic-orbit theory is explored, and energy fluctuations are studied versus particle number for generic regular and chaotic systems, as well for a system defined by a harmonic confinement potential. Temperature effects on the energy fluctuations are investigated.

Super-shell structure in harmonically trapped fermionic gases and its semi-classical interpretation

It was recently shown in self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that a harmonically trapped dilute gas of fermionic atoms with a repulsive two-body interaction exhibits a pronounced {\it super-shell} structure: the shell fillings due to the spherical harmonic trapping potential are modulated by a beat mode. This changes the ``magic numbers'' occurring between the beat nodes by half a period. The length and amplitude of the beating mode depends on the strength of the interaction. We give a qualitative interpretation of the beat structure in terms of a semiclassical trace formula that uniformly describes the symmetry breaking U(3) $\to$ SO(3) in a 3D harmonic oscillator potential perturbed by an anharmonic term $\propto r^4$ with arbitrary strength. We show that at low Fermi energies (or particle numbers), the beating gross-shell structure of this system is dominated solely by the two-fold degenerate circular and (diametrically) pendulating orbits.

Correlations in Nuclear Masses

It was recently suggested that the error with respect to experimental data in nuclear mass calculations is due to the presence of chaotic motion. The theory was tested by analyzing the typical error size. A more sensitive quantity, the correlations of the mass error between neighboring nuclei, is studied here. The results provide further support to this physical interpretation.

Supershell structure in trapped dilute Fermi gases

We show that a dilute harmonically trapped two-component gas of fermionic atoms with a weak repulsive interaction has a pronounced super-shell structure: the shell fillings due to the spherical harmonic trapping potential are modulated by a beat mode. This changes the ``magic numbers'' occurring between the beat nodes by half a period. The length and amplitude of this beating mode depend on the strength of the interaction. We give a simple interpretation of the beat structure in terms of a semiclassical trace formula for the symmetry breaking U(3) --> SO(3).

The Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky versus the Spherical Shell Model: A Comparative Study of pf-Shell Nuclei

A comparative study is performed of a deformed mean field theory, represented by the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model, and the spherical shell model. Energy spectra, occupation numbers, B(E2)-values, and spectroscopic quadrupole moments in the light pf shell nuclei are calculated in the two models and compared. The result is also compared to available experimental data which are generally well described by the shell model. Although the Nilsson-Strutinsky calculation does not include pairing, both the subshell occupation numbers and quadrupole properties are found to be rather similar in the two models. It is also shown that ``unpaired'' shell model calculations produce very similar energies as the CNS at all spins. The role of the pairing energy in the description of backbending and signature splitting in odd-mass nuclei is also discussed.

Phase transitions towards frequency entrainment in large oscillator lattices

We investigate phase transitions towards frequency entrainment in large, locally coupled networks of limit cycle oscillators. Specifically, we simulate two-dimensional lattices of pulse-coupled oscillators with random natural frequencies, resembling pacemaker cells in the heart. As coupling increases, the system seems to undergo two phasetransitions in the thermodynamic limit. At the first, the largest cluster of frequency entrained oscillators becomes macroscopic. At the second, global entrainment settles. Between the two transitions, the system has features indicating self-organized criticality.

Fast Rotation of the N=Z Nucleus 36Ar

A highly-deformed rotational band has been identified in the N=Z nucleus 36Ar. At high spin the band is observed to its presumed termination at I=16+, while at low spin it has been firmly linked to previously known states in 36Ar. Spins, parities, and absolute excitation energies have thus been determined throughout the band. Lifetime measurements establish a large low-spin quadrupole deformation (beta_2=0.46+-0.03) and indicate a decreasing collectivity as the band termination is approached. With effectively complete spectroscopic information and a valence space large enough for significant collectivity to develop, yet small enough to be meaningfully approached from the shell model perspective, this rotational band in 36Ar provides many exciting opportunities to test and compare complementary models of collective motion in nuclei.

Rotational Structure of T=0 and T=1 bands in the N=Z Nucleus 62Ga

The rotational behaviour of T=0 and T=1 bands in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 62Ga is studied theoretically using the spherical shell model (laboratory frame) and the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model (intrinsic frame). Both models give a good description of available experimental data. The role of isoscalar and isovector pairing in the T=0 and T=1 bands as functions of angular momentum is studied in the shell model. The observed backbending in the T=0 band is interpreted as an unpaired band-crossing between two configurations with different deformation. The two configurations differ by 2p-2h and are found to terminate the rotational properties at Iπ=9+ and Iπ=17+, respectively. E2-decay matrix elements and spectroscopic quadrupole moments are calculated. From the CNS calculation, supported by shell model results, it is suggested that the low spin parts of the bands with T=0 and T=1 correspond to triaxially deformed states with the rotation taking place around the shortest axis (positive γ) and intermediate axis (negative γ), respectively. At lower spins the configuration space pf_{5/2}g_{9/2}, used in the shell model calculation, is found sufficient while also f_{7/2} becomes important above the backbending.

Triaxiality in 48Cr

Rotational behavior inducing triaxiality is discussed for 48Cr in the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model, as well as in the spherical shell model. It is shown that the low-spin region up to about I=8, has a prolate well-deformed shape. At higher spins the shape is triaxial with a "negative-gamma" deformation, that is, with rotation around the classically forbidden intermediate axis. By comparing calculated B(E2)-values and spectroscopic quadrupole moments in the CNS with spherical shell model results and experimental data, the triaxial rotation around the intermediate axis is confirmed.

Deformed nuclear halos

Deformation properties of weakly bound nuclei are discussed in the deformed single-particle model. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a very small binding energy the valence particles in specific orbitals, characterized by a very small projection of single-particle angular momentum onto the symmetry axis of a nucleus, can give rise to the halo structure which is completely decoupled from the rest of the system. The quadrupole deformation of the resulting halo is completely determined by the intrinsic structure of a weakly bound orbital, irrespective of the shape of the core.
