First Exclusive Measurement of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off $^4$He: Toward the 3D Tomography of Nuclei

We report on the first measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the exclusive process of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off a nucleus. The experiment used the 6 GeV electron beam from the CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab incident on a pressurized $^4$He gaseous target placed in front of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The scattered electron was detected by CLAS and the photon by a dedicated electromagnetic calorimeter at forward angles. To ensure the exclusivity of the process, a specially designed radial time projection chamber was used to detect the recoiling $^4$He nuclei. We measured beam-spin asymmetries larger than those observed on the free proton in the same kinematic domain. From these, we were able to extract, in a model-independent way, the real and imaginary parts of the only $^4$He Compton form factor, $\cal H_A$. This first measurement of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering on the $^4$He nucleus, with a fully exclusive final state via nuclear recoil tagging, leads the way toward 3D imaging of the partonic structure of nuclei.

Photon beam asymmetry $Σ$ in the reaction $\vecγ p \to p ω$ for $E_γ$ = 1.152 to 1.876 GeV

Photon beam asymmetry $Σ$ measurements for $ω$ photoproduction in the reaction $\vecγ p \to ωp$ are reported for photon energies from 1.152 to 1.876 GeV. Data were taken using a linearly-polarized tagged photon beam, a cryogenic hydrogen target, and the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurements obtained markedly increase the size of the database for this observable, extend coverage to higher energies, and resolve discrepancies in previously published data. Comparisons of these new results with predictions from a chiral-quark-based model and from a dynamical coupled-channels model indicate the importance of interferences between $t$-channel meson exchange and $s$- and $u$-channel contributions, underscoring sensitivity to the nucleon resonances included in those descriptions. Comparisons with the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave analysis indicate the $Σ$ data reported here help to fix the magnitudes of the interference terms between the leading amplitudes in that calculation (Pomeron exchange and the resonant portion of the $J^P=3/2^+$ partial wave), as well as the resonant portions of the smaller partial waves with $J^P$= $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$.

A dynamic analysis of magnetized plasma sheath in a collisionless scenario with ion sources

In this paper, the central concern is to analyze the influence of the forces that controls the ion dynamics inside a magnetized plasma sheath under collisionless conditions. The ionization effects are considered within the sheath. The magnetic field is tilted in x-z plane and makes an angle with the x-axis. The motivation of the paper is to see the effect of both field strength variation and the variation of the inclination angle on the force fields inside the sheath. The pitch length and pitch angle for the particle velocity field is also calculated and has been found to vary widely with the inclination angle and the strength of the magnetic field. The role of the Lorentz force and energy acquired by the ions while moving towards the wall is highlighted. A comparison between two different ion sources has also been foregrounded.

Fuzzy finite element model updating using metaheuristic optimization algorithms

In this paper, a non-probabilistic method based on fuzzy logic is used to update finite element models (FEMs). Model updating techniques use the measured data to improve the accuracy of numerical models of structures. However, the measured data are contaminated with experimental noise and the models are inaccurate due to randomness in the parameters. This kind of aleatory uncertainty is irreducible, and may decrease the accuracy of the finite element model updating process. However, uncertainty quantification methods can be used to identify the uncertainty in the updating parameters. In this paper, the uncertainties associated with the modal parameters are defined as fuzzy membership functions, while the model updating procedure is defined as an optimization problem at each α-cut level. To determine the membership functions of the updated parameters, an objective function is defined and minimized using two metaheuristic optimization algorithms: ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). A structural example is used to investigate the accuracy of the fuzzy model updating strategy using the PSO and ACO algorithms. Furthermore, the results obtained by the fuzzy finite element model updating are compared with the Bayesian model updating results.

Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Conceptual Design Report Volume 1: The LBNF and DUNE Projects

This document presents the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) put forward by an international neutrino community to pursue the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF/DUNE), a groundbreaking science experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. The DUNE far detector will be a very large modular liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) located deep underground, coupled to the LBNF multi-megawatt wide-band neutrino beam. DUNE will also have a high-resolution and high-precision near detector.

Towards secure communication using intra-particle entanglement

We explore the use of the resource of intra-particle entanglement for secure quantum key distribution in the device-independent scenario. By virtue of the local nature of such entanglement, Bell tests must be implemented locally, which leads to a natural decoupling of device errors from channel errors. We consider a side channel attack on the sender's state preparation device, for which the intra-particle-entanglement based scheme is shown to be more secure than the one that uses separable states. Of practical relevance is the fact that such entanglement can be easily generated using linear optics.

Quantum key distribution using intra-particle entanglement

We propose the use of intra-particle entanglement to enhance the security of a practical implementation of the Bennett-Brassard-1984 (BB84) quantum key distribution scheme. Intra-particle entanglement is an attractive resource since it can be easily generated using only linear optics. Security is studied under a simple model of incoherent attack for protocols involving two or all five mutually unbiased bases. In terms of efficiency of secret key generation and tolerable error rate, the latter is found to be superior to the former. We find that states that allow secrecy distillation are necessarily entangled, though they may be local. Since more powerful attacks by Eve obviously exist, our result implies that security is a strictly stronger condition than entanglement for these protocols.

Detecting quantum correlations in separable systems

Quantum correlations in composite and separable quantum systems are characterized by non-vanishing quantum discord. We demonstrate the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of hermitian witness operators for quantum discord, bypassing the problem of non-convexity of the set of all classical states. We propose an example of a linear witness which can detect quantum correlations in large classes of separable bipartite systems. Decomposition of the witness in terms of a small number of locally measurable operators as shown here, paves the way for experimental detection of quantum correlations beyond entanglement.

Proposal for testing non-locality of single photons in cavities

A scheme is formulated for testing nonlocality of single photons by considering the state of a single photon that could be located within one of two spatially separated cavities. The outcomes of four experiments on this state involving the resonant interactions of two-level atoms with these cavities and a couple of other auxiliary ones is shown to lead to a contradiction with the criterion of locality.

Sampling Techniques in Bayesian Finite Element Model Updating

Recent papers in the field of Finite Element Model (FEM) updating have highlighted the benefits of Bayesian techniques. The Bayesian approaches are designed to deal with the uncertainties associated with complex systems, which is the main problem in the development and updating of FEMs. This paper highlights the complexities and challenges of implementing any Bayesian method when the analysis involves a complicated structural dynamic model. In such systems an analytical Bayesian formulation might not be available in an analytic form; therefore this leads to the use of numerical methods, i.e. sampling methods. The main challenge then is to determine an efficient sampling of the model parameter space. In this paper, three sampling techniques, the Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm, Slice Sampling and the Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) technique, are tested by updating a structural beam model. The efficiency and limitations of each technique is investigated when the FEM updating problem is implemented using the Bayesian Approach. Both MH and HMC techniques are found to perform better than the Slice sampling when Young's modulus is chosen as the updating parameter. The HMC method gives better results than MH and Slice sampling techniques, when the area moment of inertias and section areas are updated.

Information transfer using a single particle path-spin hybrid entangled state

The path-spin entangled state of a single spin-1/2 particle is considered which is generated by using a beam-spitter and a spin-flipper. Using this hybrid entanglement at the level of a single particle as a resource, we formulate a protocol for transferring of the state of an unknown qubit to a distant location. Our scheme is implemented by a sequence of unitary operations along with suitable spin-measurements, as well as by using classical communication between the two spatially separated parties. This protocol, thus, demonstrates the possibility of using intraparticle entanglement as a physical resource for performing information theoretic tasks.

Swapping path-spin intraparticle entanglement onto spin-spin interparticle entanglement

Based on a scheme that produces an entanglement between the spin and the path variables of a single spin-1/2 particle (qubit) using a beam-splitter and a spin-flipper, we formulate a procedure for transferring this intraparticle hybrid entanglement to an interparticle entanglement between the spin variables of two other spatially separated spin-1/2 particles which never interact with each other during the entire process. This procedure of entanglement swapping is accomplished by a Mach-Zehnder setup in conjunction with the Stern-Gerlach measuring device, using suitable unitary operations. The proposed protocol, thus, enables the use of intraparticle entanglement as a resource - a feature that has remained unexplored.

Quantum teleportation using non-orthogonal entangled channels

We study quantum teleportation with the resource of non-orthogonal qubit states. We first extend the standard teleportation protocol to the case of such states. We investigate how the loss of teleportation fidelity resulting for the use of non-orthogonal states compares to a similar loss of fidelity when noisy or non-maximally entangled states as used as teleportation resource. Our analysis leads to certain interesting results on the teleportation efficiency of both pure and mixed non-orthgonal states compared to that of non-maximally entangled and mixed states.

Quantum entanglement in a non-commutative system

We explore the effect of two-dimensional position-space non-commutativity on the bipartite entanglement of continuous variable systems. We first extend the standard symplectic framework for studying entanglement of Gaussian states of commutative systems to the case of non-commutative systems residing in two dimensions. Using the positive partial transpose criterion for separability of bipartite states we derive a new condition on the separability of a non-commutative system that is dependent on the noncommutative parameter $θ$. We then consider the specific example of a bipartite Gaussian state and show the quantitative reduction of entanglement originating from non-commutative dynamics. We show that such a reduction of entanglement for a non-commutative system arising from the modification of the variances of the phase space variables (uncertainty relations) is clearly manifested between two particles that are separated by small distances.

Superdense coding using the quantum superposition principle

By sending a classical two-level system, one can transfer information about only \emph{two} distinguishable outcomes. Here we show that in quantum mechanics, using both the spin and path degrees of freedom of a spin-1/2 particle, and a Mach-Zehnder type interferometric arrangement with two suitable Stern-Gerlach detectors, it is possible to transfer information about \emph{four} distinguishable outcomes. This procedure does \emph{not} require using quantum entanglement as a resource as in the well-known protocol of dense coding, but instead hinges entirely on the quantum superposition principle. We also study probabilistic dense coding using our set-up and show that the dense coding scheme using quantum superposition cannot be optimized any further by extending the interferometric arrangement with more beam splitters.

Quantum Cloning, Bell's Inequality and Teleportation

We analyze a possibility of using the two qubit output state from Buzek-Hillery quantum copying machine (not necessarily universal quantum cloning machine) as a teleportation channel. We show that there is a range of values of the machine parameter $ξ$ for which the two qubit output state is entangled and violates Bell-CHSH inequality and for a different range it remains entangled but does not violate Bell-CHSH inequality. Further we observe that for certain values of the machine parameter the two-qubit mixed state can be used as a teleportation channel. The use of the output state from the Buzek-Hillery cloning machine as a teleportation channel provides an additional appeal to the cloning machine and motivation of our present work.
