Magnetic quantum criticality: The role of the Fermi surface geometry

We investigate magnetic quantum phase-transitions in bulk correlated metals. To this end, we focus on the Hubbard model on different cubic lattices as a function of temperature and electronic density, determining the relevant regimes around its quantum magnetic transition, i.e. classical, quantum critical, and quantum disordered, as well as the corresponding (thermal/non-thermal) quantum critical exponents. Our numerical results, based on dynamical mean-field theory, together with supporting analytical derivations, rigorously demonstrate how and why the presence of different kinds of Kohn anomalies on the underlying Fermi surface (i) drives the quantum critical behavior above the quantum critical point and (ii) shapes the whole phase diagram around it. Our findings highlight the importance of an explicit inclusion of such Fermi surface geometrical properties into the universality class definition for magnetic quantum phase-transitions in correlated metals.

Mid-Rapidity Direct-Photon Production in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

A measurement of direct photons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV is presented. A photon excess above background from pi^0 --> gamma+gamma, eta --> gamma+gamma, and other decays is observed in the transverse momentum range 5.5 < p_T < 7 GeV/c. The result is compared to a next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. Within errors, good agreement is found between the QCD calculation and the measured result.

Double Helicity Asymmetry in Inclusive Mid-Rapidity neutral pion Production for Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV

We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi^0 production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 26%. The measurements are the first of a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at mid-rapidity, where next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations describe the unpolarized cross section well. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared with a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.

Search for the Decay K+ -> pi+ pi0 nu nubar

The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established.

Upper Limit on the Decay K+ --> e+ nu mu+ mu-

An upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay K+ --> e+ nu mu+ mu- is set at 5.0 x 10^{-7} at 90% confidence level, consistent with predictions from chiral perturbation theory.

Observation of the Decay K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma

The first observation of the decay K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma is reported. A total of 31 events was observed with an estimated background of 5.1 +- 3.3 events in the pi+ momentum range from 100 MeV/c to 180 MeV/c. The corresponding partial branching ratio, B(K+ -> pi+ gamma gamma, 100 MeV/c < P_pi^+ < 180 MeV/c), is (6.0 +- 1.5 (stat) +- 0.7 (sys)) x 10^{-7}. No K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma decay was observed in the pi^+ momentum region greater than 215 MeV/c. The observed pi^+ momentum spectrum is compared with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Observation of the Decay K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu-

We have observed the rare decay K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu- and measured the branching ratio Gamma(K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu-)/Gamma(K+ --> all) = (5.0 +/- 0.4 (stat.) +/- 0.7 (sys.) +/- 0.6 (theor.)) x 10^{-8}. We compare this result with predictions from chiral perturbation theory and estimates based on the decay K+ --> pi+ e+ e-.

Evidence for the Decay K+ --> pi+ nu anti-nu

An event consistent with the signature expected for the rare kaon decay K+ --> pi+ nu anti-nu has been observed. In the pion momentum region examined, 211 pi+ nu anti-nu, the branching ratio is (4.2 +9.7/-3.5) x E-10.

Search for the Decay $K^+ \to π^+ ν\overlineν$

An upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay $K^+ \! \rightarrow \! π^+ ν\overlineν$ is set at $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90\% C.L. using pions in the kinematic region $214~{\rm MeV}/c < P_π< 231~{\rm MeV}/c$. An upper limit of $5.2 \times 10^{-10}$ is found on the branching ratio for decays $K^+ \! \rightarrow \! π^+ X^0$, where $X^0$ is any massless, weakly interacting neutral particle. Limits are also set for cases where $M_{X^0}>0$.
