Search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ in the $\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+}$ final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ is performed in the $\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+}$ invariant-mass spectrum, where the $\itΞ_{c}^{+}$ baryon is reconstructed in the $p K^{-} π^{+}$ final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4$\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4$-$3.8$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+}$ decay for different $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the $\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+}$ decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620$\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5$-$3.7$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$ mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Updated search for $B_c^+$ decays to two charm mesons

A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 \text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment has been analysed to search for $B_c^+ \to D^{(*)+}_{(s)} \overset{\scriptstyle (-)}{D}{}^{(*)0}$ decays. The decays are fully or partially reconstructed, where one or two missing neutral pions or photons from the decay of an excited charm meson are allowed. Upper limits for the branching fractions, normalised to $B^+$ decays to final states with similar topologies, are obtained for fourteen $B_c^+$ decay modes. For the decay $B_c^+ \to D_s^+ {\overline{D}}^0$, an excess with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations is found.

Observation of excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons in $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^-π^-$ decays

The first observation of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decay is reported using $pp$ collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13\,$\mathrm{TeV}$ collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9\,$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. Four excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons are observed in the $Ξ_c^+ K^-$ mass projection of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decays with the significance of each exceeding five standard deviations. They coincide with the states previously observed in prompt \proton\proton and $e^+e^-$ production. Relative production rates, masses and natural widths of the states are measured, and a test of spin hypotheses is performed. Moreover, the branching ratio of $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ is measured relative to the $Ω_b^- \to Ω_c^0 π^-$ decay mode and a precise measurement of the $Ω_b^-$ mass of \mbox{$6044.3 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.1^{\,+0.19}_{\,-0.22}\,\mathrm{MeV}$} is obtained.

First measurement of the $CP$-violating phase in $B^0_s\to J/ψ(\to e^+e^-)ϕ$ decays

A flavour-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ decays is presented where the $J/ψ$ meson is reconstructed through its decay to an $e^+e^-$ pair. The analysis uses a sample of $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The $CP$-violating phase and lifetime parameters of the $B^0_s$ system are measured to be $ϕ_s=0.00\pm0.28\pm0.07$ rad, $ΔΓ_s=0.115\pm0.045\pm0.011$ ps$^{-1}$ and $Γ_s=0.608\pm0.018\pm0.012$ ps$^{-1}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first time that $CP$-violating parameters are measured in the $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ decay with an $e^+e^-$ pair in the final state. The results are consistent with previous measurements in other channels and with the Standard Model predictions.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV

The production cross-sections of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.13\pm0.18~\text{pb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\text{T}}$, and rapidity, $y$, and separately for $J/ψ$ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised $J/ψ$ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range $0<p_{\text{T}}<20~\text{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$ are $8.154\pm0.010\pm0.283~μ\text{b}$ for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $0.820\pm0.003\pm0.034~μ\text{b}$ for nonprompt $J/ψ$ mesons, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and $13$ TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for $J/ψ$ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$ TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Angular analysis of the rare decay $B_s^0\toϕμ^+μ^-$

An angular analysis of the rare decay $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13~\rm{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $8.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The observables describing the angular distributions of the decay $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ are determined in regions of $q^2$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

Study of the $B_c^+$ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9fb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the $B_c^+$ meson into a $J/ψ$ or $ψ(2S)$ meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays $B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ $, $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-$, $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^-$ and $B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^-$ are observed for the first time, and evidence for the $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+$ decay is found, where $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different $B_c^+$ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

Centrality determination in heavy-ion collisions with the LHCb detector

The centrality of heavy-ion collisions is directly related to the medium created therein. A procedure to determine the centrality of collisions with the LHCb detector is implemented for lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\text{NN}}}=5\, \mathrm{TeV}$ and lead-neon fixed-target collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\text{NN}}}=69\, \mathrm{GeV}$. The energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter are used to determine and define the centrality classes. The correspondence between the number of participants and the centrality for the lead-lead collisions is in good agreement with the correspondence found in other experiments, and the centrality measurements for the lead-neon collisions presented here are the first performed in fixed-target collisions at the LHC.

Search for time-dependent $CP$ violation in $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays

A search for time-dependent violation of the charge-parity symmetry in $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The $D^0$ meson is required to originate from a $D^*(2010)^+ \to D^0 π^+$ decay, such that its flavour at production is identified by the charge of the accompanying pion. The slope of the time-dependent asymmetry of the decay rates of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons into the final states under consideration is measured to be $ΔY_{K^+ K^-} = (-2.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4}$, $ΔY_{π^+ π^-} = (-4.0 \pm 2.8 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are compatible with the conservation of the charge-parity symmetry at the level of 2 standard deviations and improve the precision by nearly a factor of two.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$ with the decay mode $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}\to\itΞ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ collected by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed within the invariant mass range of 3.6 to 4.0$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio $R$ of the production cross-section times the total branching fraction of the $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}\to\itΞ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ decay with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++}\to\itΛ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$ decay. Upper limits at 95% credibility level for $R$ in the range $0.005$ to $0.11$ are obtained for different hypotheses on the $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and transverse momentum range from 4 to 15$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$.

Observation of a $Λ_b^0-\overlineΛ_b^0$ production asymmetry in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 \textrm{ and } 8\,\textrm{TeV}$

This article presents differential measurements of the asymmetry between $Λ_b^0$ and $\overlineΛ_b^0$ baryon production rates in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,\textrm{TeV}$ collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$. The $Λ_b^0$ baryons are reconstructed through the inclusive semileptonic decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛ_c^+μ^-\overlineν_μX$. The production asymmetry is measured both in intervals of rapidity in the range $2.15<y<4.10$ and transverse momentum in $2<p_T<27\,\textrm{GeV}/c$. The results are found to be incompatible with symmetric production with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations for both $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,\textrm{TeV}$ data, assuming no $C\!P$ violation in the decay. There is evidence for a trend as a function of rapidity with a significance of 4 standard deviations. Comparisons to predictions from hadronisation models in PYTHIA and heavy-quark recombination are provided. This result constitutes the first observation of a particle-antiparticle asymmetry in $b$-hadron production at LHC energies.

Branching fraction measurements of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\rightarrow f_2^\prime(1525)μ^+μ^-$ decays

The branching fraction of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ decay is measured using data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13\,\rm{TeV}$, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1$, $2$ and $6\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$, respectively. The branching fraction is reported in intervals of $q^2$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. In the $q^2$ region between $1.1$ and $6.0\,{\rm Ge\kern -0.1em V}^2\!/c^4$, the measurement is found to lie $3.6$ standard deviations below a Standard Model prediction based on a combination of Light Cone Sum Rule and Lattice QCD calculations. In addition, the first observation of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrow f_2^\prime(1525)μ^+μ^-$ decay is reported with a statistical significance of nine standard deviations and its branching fraction is determined.

Search for $CP$ violation in $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays

A search for $CP$ violation in charmless three-body $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays is performed using $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7\,\text{TeV}$, $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text{TeV}$ and $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text{TeV}$. A good description of the phase-space distribution is obtained with an amplitude model containing contributions from $Σ(1385)$, $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1520)$, $Λ(1670)$, $Σ(1775)$ and $Σ(1915)$ resonances. The model allows for $CP$-violation effects, which are found to be consistent with zero. The branching fractions of $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1385) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1405) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1520) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1670) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1775) K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1915) K^-$ decays are also reported. In addition, an upper limit is placed on the product of ratios of $Ω_b^-$ and $Ξ_b^-$ fragmentation fractions and the $Ω_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ branching fractions.

Study of the $ψ_2(3823)$ and $χ_{c1}(3872)$ states in $B^+ \rightarrow \left( Jψπ^+π^-\right)K^+$ decays

The decays $B^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^- K^+$ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are reported. The decay of $B^+\rightarrow ψ_2(3823)K^+$ with $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrow Jψπ^+π^-$ is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rcl} m_{χ_{c1(3872)}} - m_{ψ_2(3823)} &= & 47.50 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.13\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{ψ_2(3823)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 137.98 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{χ_{c1}(3872)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 185.49 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \end{array} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the $χ_{c1}(3782)$ mass. The width of the $ψ_2(3823)$ state is found to be below 5.2MeV at 90\% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state is measured to be $$ Γ^{\mathrm{BW}}_{χ_{c1}(3872)} = 0.96^{+0.19}_{-0.18}\pm0.21 \mathrm{MeV},$$ which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays

A measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays is reported, based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The flavor of the $D^0$ candidate is determined using the charge of the $D^{*\pm}$ meson, from which the decay is required to originate. The $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ decay is used as a calibration channel. The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry for the $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ mode is measured to be: $$A^{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-3.1\pm 1.2\pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $CP$ asymmetry of the calibration channel. This is the most precise determination of this quantity to date.

Observation of new resonances decaying to $J/ψK^+$ and $J/ψϕ$

The first observation of exotic states with a new quark content $c \bar{c} u \bar{s}$ decaying to the $J/ψK^+$ final state is reported with high significance from an amplitude analysis of the $B^+ \to J/ψϕK^+$ decay. The analysis is carried out using proton-proton collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The most significant state, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, has a mass of $4003\pm6\,^{+\,\phantom{0}4}_{-\,14}$ MeV, a width of $131\pm15\pm26$ MeV, and spin-parity $J^P=1^+$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new $1^+$ $X(4685)$ state decaying to the $J/ψϕ$ final state is also observed with high significance. In addition, the four previously reported $J/ψϕ$ states are confirmed and two more exotic states, $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$ and $X(4630)$, are observed with significance exceeding five standard deviations.

Search for the doubly heavy baryons $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ and $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ decaying to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ and $\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$

The first search for the doubly heavy $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ baryon and a search for $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ baryon are performed using $pp$ collision data collected via the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $13TeV$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2$fb^{-1}$. The baryons are reconstructed via their decays to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ and $\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$. No significant excess is found for invariant masses between 6700 and 7300$MeV/c^2$, in a rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and a transverse momentum range from 2 to 20$GeV/c$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of the $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ and $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ production cross-section times the branching fraction to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ ($\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$) relative to that of the $\it{Λ_b^{\rm0}}$ ($\it{Ξ_b^{\rm0}}$) baryon, for different lifetime hypotheses, at $95\%$ confidence level. Precise measurement of the $f_s/f_d$ ratio of fragmentation fractions and of $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions

The ratio of the $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ fragmentation fractions, $f_s/f_d$, in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, is obtained as a function of $B$-meson transverse momentum and collision centre-of-mass energy from the combined analysis of different $B$-decay channels measured by the LHCb experiment. The results are described by a linear function of the meson transverse momentum, or with a function inspired by Tsallis statistics. Precise measurements of the branching fractions of the $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$ and $B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+$ decays are performed, reducing their uncertainty by about a factor of two with respect to previous world averages. Numerous $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions, measured at the LHCb experiment, are also updated using the new values of $f_s/f_d$ and branching fractions of normalisation channels. These results reduce a major source of systematic uncertainty in several searches for new physics performed through measurements of $B^0_s$ branching fractions.
