Measurement of the inclusive branching fractions for $B_s^0$ decays into $D$ mesons via hadronic tagging

We report measurements of the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X)$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X)$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X)$, where the latter is measured for the first time. The results are based on a 121.4\,fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(10860)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct one $B_s^0$ meson in $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(10860) \to B_s^{*} \bar{B}_s^{*}$ events and measure yields of $D_s^+$, $D^0$, and $D^+$ mesons in the rest of the event. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (68.6 \pm 7.2 \pm 4.0)\%$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (21.5 \pm 6.1 \pm 1.8)\%$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X) = (12.6 \pm 4.6 \pm 1.3)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Averaging with previous Belle measurements gives $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (63.4 \pm 4.5 \pm 2.2)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (23.9 \pm 4.1 \pm 1.8)\%$. For the $B_s^0$ production fraction at the $\Upsilon(10860)$, we find $f_s = (21.4^{+1.5}_{-1.7})\%$.

Search for Rare $b \to d\ell^+\ell^-$ Transitions at Belle

We present the results of a search for the $b \to d\ell^+\ell^-$ flavor-changing neutral-current rare decays $B^{+, 0} \to (η, ω, π^{+,0}, ρ^{+, 0}) e^+e^-$ and $B^{+, 0} \to (η, ω, π^{0}, ρ^{+}) μ^+μ^-$ using a $711$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events. The data were collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the $90\%$ confidence level in the range $(3.8 - 47) \times 10^{-8}$ depending on the decay channel. The obtained limits are the world's best results. This is the first search for the channels $B^{+, 0} \to (ω, ρ^{+,0}) e^+e^-$ and $B^{+, 0} \to (ω, ρ^{+})μ^+μ^-$.

Search for the decay $B^{0}\toγγ$ using Belle and Belle II data

We report the result of a search for the rare decay $B^{0} \to γγ$ using a combined dataset of $753\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the $\rm Υ(4S)$ resonance produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions. A simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields $11.0^{+6.5}_{-5.5}$ signal events, corresponding to a 2.5$σ$ significance. We determine the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to γγ) = (3.7^{+2.2}_{-1.8}(\rm stat)\pm0.5(\rm syst))\times10^{-8}$ and set a 90% credibility level upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to γγ) < 6.4\times10^{-8}$.

Determination of the CKM angle $ϕ_{3}$ from a combination of Belle and Belle II results

We report a determination of the CKM angle $ϕ_{3}$, also known as $γ$, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711~fb$^{-1}$ from the Belle experiment and up to 362~fb$^{-1}$ from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of $B^+\to DK^+, B^+\to Dπ^+$, and $B^+ \to D^{*}K^+$ decays, where $D$ is an admixture of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^{0}$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain $ϕ_{3} = (78.6^{+7.2}_{-7.3})^{\circ}$. We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Study of $\chi_{bJ}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$ at Belle

We report a study of the hadronic transitions $\chi_{bJ}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$, with $\omega\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$, using $28.2\times10^6~\Upsilon(3S)$ mesons recorded by the Belle detector. We present the first evidence for the near--threshold transition $\chi_{b0}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$, the analog of the near-threshold charm sector decay $\chi_{c1}(3872)\to\omega J/\psi$, with a branching fraction of $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b0}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(0.55\pm0.19\pm0.07\big)\%$. We also obtain branching fractions of $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b1}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(2.39{}^{+0.20}_{-0.19}\pm0.24\big)\%$ and $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b2}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(0.47{}^{+0.13}_{-0.12}\pm0.06\big)\%$, confirming the measurement of the $\omega$ transitions of the $J=1,2~P$--wave states. The ratio for the $J=2$ to $J=1$ transitions is also measured and found to differ by 3.3 standard deviations from the expected value in the QCD multipole expansion.

Search for a heavy neutral lepton that mixes predominantly with the tau neutrino

We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly with $ν_τ$. The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances and has an integrated luminosity of $915~\textrm{fb}^{-1}$, corresponding to $(836\pm 12)\times 10^6$ $e^+e^\toτ^+τ^-$ events. We search for production of the HNL (denoted $N$) in the decay $τ^-\to π^- N$ followed by its decay via $N \to μ^+μ^- ν_τ$. The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long lived, so that the $μ^+μ^-$ originate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with the $τ$ neutrino as a function of the HNL mass.

Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays $\boldsymbol{D \rightarrow p\ell}$

We search for the baryon and lepton number violating charm decays, $D \rightarrow p\ell$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or a $\overline{D}^0$ and $\ell$ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample of $921\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5 - 8) \times 10^{-7}$ at a 90\% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Search for a pentaquark state decaying into $pJ/\psi$ in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays at Belle

Using the data samples of 102 million $\Upsilon(1S)$ and 158 million $\Upsilon(2S)$ events collected by the Belle detector, we search for a pentaquark state in the $pJ/\psi$ final state from $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays. Here, the charge-conjugate $\bar{p}J/\psi$ is included. We observe clear $pJ/\psi$ production in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ decays and measure the branching fractions to be $B[\Upsilon(1S) \to pJ/\psi + anything] = [8.1 \pm 0.6(stat.) \pm 0.5(syst.)] \times 10^{-5}$ and $B[\Upsilon(2S) \to pJ/\psi + anything] = [4.3 \pm 0.5(stat.) \pm 0.4(syst.)] \times 10^{-5}$. We also measure the cross section of inclusive $pJ/\psi$ production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to be $\sigma(e^+e^- \to pJ/\psi + anything) = [108 \pm 11 (stat.) \pm 6(syst.)]$~fb at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52~\hbox{GeV}$ using an 89.5~fb$^{-1}$ continuum data sample. There is no significant $P_c(4312)^+$, $P_c(4440)^+$ or $P_c(4457)^+$ signal found in the $pJ/\psi$ final states in $\Upsilon(1,2S)$ inclusive decays. We determine the upper limits of $B[\Upsilon(1,2S)\to P_c^{+} + anything] \cdot B(P_c^{+}\to pJ/\psi)$ to be at the $10^{-6}$ level.

Measurements of the branching fraction, polarization, and $CP$ asymmetry for the decay $B^0\rightarrow ωω$

We present a measurement of $B^{0} \rightarrow ωω$, a charmless decay into two vector mesons, using 772 $\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The decay is observed with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B} = (1.53 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-6}$, a fraction of longitudinal polarization $f_L = 0.87 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13$, and a time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}$ = $-0.44 \pm 0.43 \pm 0.11$, where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of $B^{0} \rightarrow ωω$, and the first measurements of $f_L$ and $A_{CP}$ for this decay.

Search for the semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle

Using the full data sample of 980 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider, we report the results of the first search for the rare semileptonic decays $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e$ or $μ)$. No significant signals are observed in the $Ξ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ invariant-mass distributions. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$ as the normalization mode, we report 90\% credibility upper limits on the branching fraction ratios ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 6.7 \times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-) / {\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+) < 4.3 \times 10^{-3}$ based on the phase-space assumption for signal decays. The 90\% credibility upper limits on the absolute branching fractions of ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 e^+ e^-)$ and ${\cal{B}} (Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 μ^+ μ^-)$ are found to be $9.9 \times 10^{-5}$ and $6.5 \times 10^{-5}$, respectively.

Search for a heavy neutrino in $τ$ decays at Belle

We report on a search for a heavy neutrino in the decays $τ^- \to π^- ν_h$, $ν_h \to π^\pm \ell-+$, $\ell = e, μ$. The results are obtained using the full data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe no significant signal and set 90% CL upper limits on the couplings of the heavy right-handed neutrinos to the conventional SM left-handed neutrinos in the mass range 0.2-1.6 GeV/c$^2$.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to B_s^0 \bar{B}_s^0 X$ cross section in the energy range from $10.63$ to $11.02$ GeV using inclusive $D_s^{\pm}$ and $D^0$ production

We report the first measurement of the inclusive $e^+e^- \to b\bar{b} \to D_s^{\pm}X$ and $e^+e^- \to b\bar{b} \to D^0/\bar{D}^0X$ cross sections in the energy range from $10.63$ to $11.02$. Based on these results, we determine $σ(e^+ e^- \to B_s^0 \bar{B}_s^0 X)$ and $σ(e^+ e^- \to B\bar{B}X)$ in the same energy range. We measure the fraction of $B_s^0$ events at $Υ(10860)$ to be $f_{\rm s}=(22.0^{+2.0}_{-2.1})\%$. We determine also the ratio of the $B_s^0$ inclusive branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0X)/\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X)=0.416 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.092$. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Evidence for $B^0 \to p\barΣ^0π^-$ at Belle

We search for the $B^0\to p\barΣ^0π^-$ decay with $\barΣ^0 \to \barΛγ$, where the $γ$ is not measured, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 $\rm{fb^{-1}}$ which contains 772 $\times$ $10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected around the $Υ$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure for the first time the $B^0\to p\barΣ^0π^-$ branching fraction to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to p \barΣ^0 π^-) = (1.17^{+0.43}_{-0.40}(\text{stat})\pm 0.07(\text{syst})) \times 10^{-6}$ with a significance of $3.0σ$. We simultaneously measure the branching fraction for the related channel $B^{0}\to p\barΛπ^{-}$ with much improved precision.

First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive $\left|V_{ub}\right|$

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$ using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb${}^{-1}$. We analyze collision events in which one $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic $X_u$ system of the semileptonic $b \to u \ell \bar ν_\ell$ decay. We separate exclusive $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| / \left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = 0.97 \pm 0.12$ is compatible with unity.

Search for the double-charmonium state with $η_c J/ψ$ at Belle

We measure the cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrowη_c J/ψ$ at the $Υ(nS) (n=1$ -- $5)$ on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of $955~\rm fb^{-1}$. We also search for double charmonium production in $e^+e^-\rightarrowη_c J/ψ$ via initial state radiation near the $η_c J/ψ$ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the $e^+e^-\rightarrowη_c J/ψ$ process is found with a statistical significance greater than $3.3σ$ near the $η_c J/ψ$ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

First measurement of the Q^2 distribution of X(3915) single-tag two-photon production

We report the first measurement of the $Q^2$ distribution of $X(3915)$ produced by single-tag two-photon interactions. The decay mode used is $X(3915) \rightarrow J/ψω$. The covered $Q^2$ region is from 1.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ to 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. We observe $7.9\pm 3.1({\rm stat.})\pm 1.5({\rm syst.})$ events, where we expect $4.1\pm 0.7$ events based on the $Q^2=0$ result from the no-tag two-photon process, extrapolated to higher $Q^2$ region using the $c\bar{c}$ model of Schuler, Berends, and van Gulik. The shape of the distribution is also consistent with this model; we note that statistical uncertainties are large.

Study of the muon decay-in-flight in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay to measure the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay using the full data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The method is based on the reconstruction of the $μ^- \to e^- \barν_eν_μ$ decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber and relies on the correlation between muon spin and its daughter electron momentum. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain $ξ^\prime=0.22\pm0.94\pm0.42$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of $ξ^\prime=1$.

First measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter $ξ^\prime$ in the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the $τ^-\toμ^-\barν_μν_τ$ events with subsequent muon decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately $912\times10^6$ $τ^+ τ^-$ pairs. We measure $ξ^\prime=0.22\pm0.94(\text{stat})\pm0.42(\text{syst})$, which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of $ξ^\prime=1$. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.
