Fused-Silica Activation Cherenkov Detector for Pulsed D--T Fusion Yields

We demonstrate a compact, non-toxic, low-cost neutron-yield diagnostic for pulsed D--T fusion systems using an undoped fused-silica (SiO$2$) rod as both activation target and Cherenkov radiator. D--T neutrons (14.1 MeV) activate $^{28}$Si and $^{16}$O to produce short-lived $^{28}$Al ($T{1/2}=134,\mathrm{s}$) and $^{16}$N ($T_{1/2}=7.13,\mathrm{s}$). The resulting $β^-$ particles exceed the Cherenkov threshold and generate UV--visible light detected by a fast photomultiplier tube. A SiO$_2$ rod of dimensions $6,\mathrm{in}\times1,\mathrm{in}$ (length $\times$ diameter) is optically coupled and read out with a CAEN DT5730 digitizer operating in list mode with digital pulse processing. The post-pulse count rate is fit using fixed $^{16}$N and $^{28}$Al half-lives together with background terms to infer neutron fluence. Testing at the ZEUS D--T Dense Plasma Focus established a reference calibration and agreement with a praseodymium-calibrated silver activation detector. Measurements near a D--D Dense Plasma Focus show no activation signal, confirming D--T selectivity. The diagnostic enables pulse-to-pulse yield measurements within minutes following a pulse and is being deployed on Helion Energy's seventh fusion prototype, Polaris.

Quenching factors for Na recoils as a function of Tl dopant concentrations in NaI(Tl) crystals

Thallium-doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) scintillation detectors play an important role in the field of direct dark matter (DM) searches. The DAMA/LIBRA experiment stands out for its reported observation of an annually modulating DM-like signal, which is in direct contrast with other results. To accurately calibrate the energies of nuclear recoil signals with electron recoils, precise measurements of the quenching factor of the NaI(Tl) crystals are essential, as the two processes have different scintillation light yield. In this article, we present results of a systematic study carried out by the COSINUS collaboration and Duke University to measure the quenching factor of sodium (Na) recoils as a function of nuclear recoil energy and for differing Thallium (Tl) dopant concentrations in the bulk crystal. Five ultrapure NaI(Tl) crystals, manufactured by the Shanghai Institute for Ceramics, were irradiated with a quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, North Carolina, USA. The quenching factor for low nuclear recoil energies of 5-26keV$_{nr}$ was extracted for all 5 crystals. A Tl-dependence could be deduced with a proportional response calibration schema using a $^{241}$Am source. However, this effect was not observed when using a low-energy calibration line from $^{133}$Ba.

The COHERENT Experimental Program

The COHERENT experiment located in Neutrino Alley at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has made the world's first two measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS), on CsI and argon, using neutrinos produced at the SNS. The COHERENT collaboration continues to pursue CEvNS measurements on various targets as well as additional studies of inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions, searches for accelerator-produced dark matter (DM) and physics beyond the Standard Model, using the uniquely high-quality and high-intensity neutrino source available at the SNS. This white paper describes primarily COHERENT's ongoing and near-future program at the SNS First Target Station (FTS). Opportunities enabled by the SNS Second Target Station (STS) for the study of neutrino physics and development of novel detector technologies are elaborated in a separate white paper.
