Measurement of the $B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ branching fraction

The $B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ branching fraction is measured in a data sample corresponding to 0.41$fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions affecting the sin2$β$ measurement from $B^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ The time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be $BF(B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0)=(1.83\pm0.28)\times10^{-5}$. This is the most precise measurement to date.

Measurements of the branching fractions of the decays $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ and $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$

The decay mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ allows for one of the theoretically cleanest measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ through the study of time-dependent $\ensuremath{CP}\xspace$ violation. This paper reports a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the Cabibbo-favoured mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$ based on a data sample of 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. In addition, the ratio of $\ensuremath{\mathrm{B}}\xspace$ meson production fractions $\ensuremath{f_s/f_d}$, determined from semileptonic decays, together with the known branching fraction of the control channel $B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}$, is used to perform an absolute measurement of the branching fractions: $B (\B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+) \;= (2.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.17^{\,+\,0.18}_{\,-\,0.22}) \times 10^{-3}$, $B (\B^0_s \to D^\mp_s K^\pm) = (1.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13^{\,+\,0.12}_{\,-\,0.14}) \times 10^{-4}\,$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third the uncertainty due to $f_s/f_d$.

Measurement of the Ds+ - Ds- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

Heavy quark production in 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC is not necessarily flavour symmetric. The production asymmetry, A_P, between Ds+ and Ds- mesons is studied using the ϕπ(+/-) decay mode in a data sample of 1.0/fb collected with the LHCb detector. The difference between π+ and π- detection efficiencies is determined using the ratios of fully reconstructed to partially reconstructed D*(+/-) decays. The overall production asymmetry in the Ds rapidity region 2.0 to 4.5 with transverse momentum larger than 2 GeV is measured to be A_P=(-0.33 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.10)%. This result can constrain models of heavy flavour production.

First evidence of direct CP violation in charmless two-body decays of Bs mesons

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by LHCb in 2011, we report the first evidence of CP violation in the decays of $B^0_s$ mesons to $K^\pm π^\mp$ pairs, $A_{CP}(B^0_s \rightarrow K π)=0.27 \pm 0.08\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, with a significance of 3.3$σ$. Furthermore, we report the first observation of CP violation in $B^0$ decays at a hadron collider, $A_{CP}(B^0 \rightarrow Kπ)=-0.088 \pm 0.011\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, with a significance exceeding 6$σ$.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕs in Bs->J/ψπ+π- decays

Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/ψpi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.

Strong constraints on the rare decays Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu-

A search for Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu- decays is performed using 1.0 fb^-1 of pp collision data collected at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. For both decays the number of observed events is consistent with expectation from background and Standard Model signal predictions. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) < 4.5 (3.8) x 10^-9 and BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 1.0 (0.81) x 10^-9 at 95% (90%) confidence level.

First observation of the decay Bc+ to J/psi pi+pi-pi+

The decay Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+ is observed for the first time, using 0.8 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of branching fractions BR(Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+)/BR(B_c+ --> J/psi pi+) is measured to be 2.41+-0.30+-0.33, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays

A study of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays is performed with data corresponding to 0.37 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Their branching fractions are found to be B(B+ to J/psi pi+) = (3.88 +- 0.11 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5} and B(B+ to psi(2S) pi+) = (2.52 +- 0.26 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, where the first uncertainty is related to the statistical size of the sample and the second quantifies systematic effects. The measured CP asymmetries in these modes are ACP(J/psi pi) = 0.005 +- 0.027 +- 0.011 and ACP(psi(2S) pi) = 0.048 +- 0.090 +- 0.011 with no evidence of direct CP violation seen.

Self Heating of Corona by Electrostatic Fields Driven by Sheared Flows

A mechanism of self-heating of solar corona is pointed out. It is shown that the free energy available in the form of sheared flows gives rise to unstable electrostatic waves which accelerate the particles and heat them. The electrostatic perturbations take place through two processes (a) by purely growing sheared flow-driven instability and (b) by sheared flow-driven drift waves. These processes occur throughout the corona and hence the self-heating is very important in this plasma. These instabilities can give rise to local electrostatic potentials $φ$ of the order of about 100 volts or less within $3\times10^{-2}$ to a few seconds time if the initial perturbation is assumed to be about one percent that is $\frac{eφ}{T_{e}}\simeq10^{-2}$. The components of wave lengths in the direction perpendicular to external magnetic field $\textbf{B}_{0}$ vary from about 10m to 1m. The purely growing instability creates electrostatic fields by sheared flows even if the density gradient does not exist whereas the density gradient is crucial for the concurrence of drift wave instability. Two-dimensional Systems that Arise from the Noether Classification of Lagrangians on the Line

The Noether-like operators that play an essential role in writing down the invariants for systems of two ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are constructed. The classification of such operators is carried out with the help of analytic continuation of the Lagrangians on the line. Cases in which the Noether-like operators are also Noether symmetries for the systems of ODEs are briefly mentioned. In particular, the 8-dimensional maximal Noether subalgebra is remarkabely obtained for the simplest system of the free particle equations in two dimensions from the 5-dimensional complex Noether algebra. We present the effectivness of Noether-like operators as well as the determination of all first integrals of systems of nonlinear differential equation which have not been reported before. This study gives a new direction to construct first integrals for systems of nonlinear differential equations.

Use of Complex Lie Symmetries for Linearization of Systems of Differential Equations - I: Ordinary Differential Equations

The Lie linearizability criteria are extended to complex functions for complex ordinary differential equations. The linearizability of complex ordinary differential equations is used to study the linearizability of corresponding systems of two real ordinary differential equations. The transformations that map a system of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations into systems of linear ordinary differential equations are obtained from complex transformations. Invariant criteria for linearization are given for second order complex ordinary differential equations in terms of the coefficients of the equations, as well as the corresponding real system, which provide procedures for writing down the solutions of the equations. Illustrative examples are given and discussed.

Symmetry analysis and exact solutions of semilinear heat flow in multi-dimensions

A symmetry group method is used to obtain exact solutions for a semilinear radial heat equation in $n>1$ dimensions with a general power nonlinearity. The method involves an ansatz technique to solve an equivalent first-order PDE system of similarity variables given by group foliations of this heat equation, using its admitted group of scaling symmetries. This technique yields explicit similarity solutions as well as other explicit solutions of a more general (non-similarity) form having interesting analytical behavior connected with blow up and dispersion. In contrast, standard similarity reduction of this heat equation gives a semilinear ODE that cannot be explicitly solved by familiar integration techniques such as point symmetry reduction or integrating factors.

Plasmon wakefields and dispersive properties of metallic nanostructures

We investigate the excitation of electrostatic wakefields in metallic nanostructures (nanowires) due to the propagation of a short electron pulse. For that purpose, a dispersive (nonlocal) dielectric response of the system is considered, accounting for both the finiteness of the system and the quantum (Bohm) difraction of the conduction electron band, generalizing the results obtained previously in the literature [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 097403 (2009)]. We discuss on the stability conditions of wakefields and show that the underling mechanism can be useful to investigate new sources of radiation in the extreme-ultra-violet (XUV) range.

Nonlinear structures: explosive, soliton and shock in a quantum electron-positron-ion magnetoplasma

Theoretical and numerical studies are performed for the nonlinear structures (explosive, solitons and shock) in quantum electron-positron-ion magnetoplasmas. For this purpose, the reductive perturbation method is employed to the quantum hydrodynamical equations and the Poisson equation, obtaining extended quantum Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. The latter has been solved using the generalized expansion method to obtain a set of analytical solutions, which reflect the possibility of the propagation of various nonlinear structures. The relevance of the present investigation to the white dwarfs is highlighted.

Nonlinear wave interactions in quantum magnetoplasmas

Nonlinear interactions involving electrostatic upper-hybrid (UH), ion-cyclotron (IC), lower-hybrid (LH), and Alfven waves in quantum magnetoplasmas are considered. For this purpose, the quantum hydrodynamical equations are used to derive the governing equations for nonlinearly coupled UH, IC, LH, and Alfven waves. The equations are then Fourier analyzed to obtain nonlinear dispersion relations, which admit both decay and modulational instabilities of the UH waves at quantum scales. The growth rates of the instabilities are presented. They can be useful in applications of our work to diagnostics in laboratory and astrophysical settings.
