Lattice fermions with Majorana couplings

We analyse stability of almost massless Dirac mode in gauge models with boundary (domain wall) fermions, and consider the possibility of decoupling one of its chiral component by giving it a Majorana mass of the order of the inverse lattice spacing. We argue that the chiral spectrum in such models is always uncharged, so they can be implemented for defining the Weyl fermions only in the real representation of the gauge group, for instance, in SUSY models.

Full QCD simulation on CP-PACS

A status report is made of an on-going full QCD study on the CP-PACS aiming at a comparative analysis of the effects of improving gauge and quark actions on hadronic quantities and static quark potential. Simulations are made for four action combinations, the plaquette or an RG-improved action for gluons and the Wilson or SW-clover action for quarks, at $a^{-1} \approx 1.1$-1.3GeV and $m_π/m_ρ\approx 0.7$-0.9. Results demonstrate clearly that the clover term markedly reduces discretization errors for hadron spectrum, while adding six-link terms to the plaquette action leads to much better rotational symmetry in the potential. These results extend experience with quenched simulations to full QCD.

Scaling Analysis of Chiral Phase Transition for Two Flavors of Kogut-Susskind Quarks

Report is made of a systematic scaling study of the finite-temperature chiral phase transition of two-flavor QCD with the Kogut-Susskind quark action based on simulations on $L^3\times4$ ($L$=8, 12 and 16) lattices at the quark mass of $m_q=0.075, 0.0375, 0.02$ and 0.01. Our finite-size data show that a phase transition is absent for $m_q\geq 0.02$, and quite likely also at $m_q=0.01$. The scaling behavior of susceptibilities as a function of $m_q$ is consistent with a second-order transition at $m_q=0$. However, the exponents deviate from the O(2) or O(4) values theoretically expected.

Phase Structure of Lattice QCD with Wilson fermion at Finite Temperature

We review our attempt at understanding the phase structure of lattice QCD with the Wilson fermion formulation at finite temperature, based on a spontaneous breakdown of parity-flavor symmetry. Numerical results demonstrating explicitly the spontaneous breakdown of parity-flavor symmetry beyond the critical line at both zero and finite temperatures are reported. The phase structure and order of the chiral transition are reported for $N_f=2$,3, and 4 flavors, and the approach towards the continuum limit is discussed.

Lattice QCD Calculation of the Kaon B-parameter with the Wilson Quark Action

The kaon B parameter is calculated in quenched lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action. The mixing problem of the Δs=2 four-quark operators is solved non-perturbatively with full use of chiral Ward identities, and this method enables us to construct the weak four-quark operators exhibiting good chiral behavior. We find B_K(NDR, 2GeV)=0.562(64) in the continuum limit, which agrees with the value obtained with the Kogut-Susskind quark action.

Domain wall fermions with Majorana couplings

We examine the lattice boundary formulation of chiral fermions with either an explicit Majorana mass or a Higgs-Majorana coupling introduced on one of the boundaries. We demonstrate that the low-lying spectrum of the models with an explicit Majorana mass of the order of an inverse lattice spacing is chiral at tree level. Within a mean-field approximation we show that the systems with a strong Higgs-Majorana coupling have a symmetric phase, in which a Majorana mass of the order of an inverse lattice spacing is generated without spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. We argue, however, that the models within such a phase have a chiral spectrum only in terms of the fermions that are singlets under the gauge group. The application of such systems to nonperturbative formulations of supersymmetric and chiral gauge theories is briefly discussed.

Finite-Temperature Phase Structure of Lattice QCD with the Wilson Quark Action for Two and Four Flavors

We present further analyses of the finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action based on spontaneous breakdown of parity-flavor symmetry. Results are reported on (i) an explicit demonstration of spontaneous breakdown of parity-flavor symmetry beyond the critical line, (ii) phase structure and order of chiral transition for the case of $N_f=4$ flavors, and (iii) approach toward the continuum limit.

Chiral zero modes on the domain-wall model in 4+1 dimensions

We investigate an original domain-wall model in 4+1 dimensions numerically in the presence of U(1) dynamical gauge field only in an extra dimension, corresponding to a weak coupling limit of 4-dimensional physical gauge coupling. Using a quenched approximation we carry out numerical simulation for this model at $β_{s} (= 1 / g^{2}_{s}) =$ 0.29 (``symmetric'' phase) and 0.5 (``broken'' phase), where $g_s$ is the gauge coupling constant of the extra dimension. In the broken phase, we found that there exists a critical value of a domain-wall mass $m_{0}^{c}$ which separates a region with a fermionic zero mode on the domain wall from the one without it in the same case of (2+1)-dimensional model. On the other hand, in the symmetric phase, our numerical data suggest that the chiral zero modes disappear in the infinite limit of 4-dimensional volume. From these results it seems difficult to construct the U(1) lattice chiral gauge theory via an original domain-wall formulation.

Domain-wall fermions with U(1) dynamical gauge fields in (4+1)-dimensions

We carry out a numerical simulation of a domain-wall model in (4+1) dimensions, in the presence of a quenched U(1) dynamical gauge field only in an extra dimension, corresponding to the weak coupling limit of a (4-dimensional) physical gauge coupling. Our numerical data suggest that the zero mode seems absent in the symmetric phase, so that it is difficult to construct a lattice chiral gauge theory in the continuum limit.

Topics in Light Hadron Mass Spectrum in Quenched QCD

Several topics concerning the light hadron spectrum are discussed. Flavor symmetry breaking effects and the problem of quenched chiral logarithm are examined with pion mass data for the Kogut-Susskind quark action, and light meson decay constants for the Wilson action calculated with non-perturbative renormalization constants are discussed. Results for quark masses are also given both for the Kogut-Susskind and Wilson actions.

Continuum Limit of the Heavy-Light Decay Constant with the Quenched Wilson Quark Action

We explore the problems in calculating the decay constant for heavy-light mesons using the quenched Wilson quark action for both heavy and light quarks. We find that the continuum limit of the decay constant is reasonably converged among different prescriptions after the continuum limit is taken. A number of technical problems associated with prescriptions are also addressed.

Toward the Continuum Limit of $B_K$ with the Quenched Kogut-Susskind Quark Action

We present new results of our ongoing project toward a precision determination of the kaon $B$ parameter with the Kogut-Susskind quark action in quenched QCD. New results taken at $β$=6.4 and $β=5.7$ suggest that an apparently linear $a$ dependence of $B_K$ previously observed for $β=5.85-6.2$ arises from a change of curvature from convex to concave as the lattice spacing is reduced. Fitting data for $β\geq 5.93$ with an $O(a^2)$ form yields $B_K$(NDR,2 GeV)=0.587(7)(17) in the continuum limit. We also describe a finite-size study of $B_K$ at $β=$ 6.0 and 6.4, and a reanalysis of the theoretical argument for $O(a^2)$ behavior.

Tensor Charge of the Nucleon in Lattice QCD

First results of lattice QCD simulation on the nucleon tensor-charge $δq$ are presented. From the quenched QCD simulations with the Wilson quark action at $β= 5.7$ on a 16$^3\times$ 20 lattice and on a $12^3\times 20$ lattice, we find (i) the connected part $δq_{con.}$ is determined with small statistical error, (ii) the disconnected part $δq_{dis.}$, which violates the OZI rule, is consistent with zero, and (iii) the flavor-singlet tensor charge $ δΣ(μ^2 = 2 {\rm GeV}^2) = δu + δd + δs$ takes 0.562(88) at $β=5.7$, which is in contrast with the flavor-singlet axial charge $ΔΣ= 0.1-0.3$.

Measurement of B(D_s+ -> mu+ nu_mu)/B(D_s+ -> phi mu+ nu_mu) and Determination of the Decay Constant f_{D_s}

We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> μ^+ ν_μ$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. Using the $D_s^+ -> ϕμ^+ ν_μ$ yield measured previously in this experiment, we obtain $B(D_s^+ --> μ^+ ν_μ) / B(D_s^+ --> ϕμ^+ ν_μ) =0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$.

Tensor Charge of the Nucleon on the Lattice

Tensor charge of the nucleon, which will be measured in Drell-Yan processes in polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC, are studied in quenched lattice QCD simulation. On the 16$^3\times$ 20 lattice with $β=5.7$, connected parts of the tensor charge are determined with small statistical error, while the disconnected parts are found to be small with relatively large error bars. Flavor-singlet tensor charge ($δΣ= δu + δd + δs$) is not suppressed as opposed to the flavor singlet axial charge ($ΔΣ= Δu + Δd + Δs$).

Perturbative study for domain-wall fermions in 4+1 dimensions

We investigate a U(1) chiral gauge model in 4+1 dimensions formulated on the lattice via the domain-wall method. We calculate an effective action for smooth background gauge fields at a fermion one loop level. From this calculation we discuss properties of the resulting 4 dimensional theory, such as gauge invariance of 2 point functions, gauge anomalies and an anomaly in the fermion number current.

Fate of the Critical Line and Chiral Transition in Finite-Temperature Lattice QCD with the Wilson Quark Action

Finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action is analyzed. We show that the critical line at finite temperatures, defined to be the line of vanishing pion screening mass, turns back toward strong coupling, forming a cusp on the $(β, K)$ plane, and that the line of thermal transition runs past the tip of the cusp without touching the critical line. Previous results are discussed in the light of our findings.
