Intracluster ion-molecule reaction in quinoline and isoquinoline dimers under the influence of diverse ionizing radiations

This work demonstrates the tendency of two model PANH isomers to dimerize under pure ambient evaporative conditions and then undergo complex intracluster ion-molecule reactions to produce rich chemistry. Despite the population of such dimers at room temperature is found to be relatively low, they are found to produce observable effects in typical stellar radiation conditions. It is also demonstrated that various types of energetic radiation (UV radiation at 266 nm, synchrotron VUV radiation and high-energy protons) can induce intracluster ion-molecule reactions in the dimers. The existence of such dimers is confirmed via the analysis of the mass-selected photoelectron spectra of various species observed in the mass spectra. The signal from such processes is enhanced by UV multiphoton ionization/dissociation and is analysed using energy-correlated time-of-flight mass spectrometry. These measurements, together with the dependence on laser intensity, disclose the reaction energetics as well as the hierarchy of the decay of the reaction products. The findings of this work on dimer-driven ion-molecular reactions in quinoline and isoquinoline provide an alternative to the path for molecular growth in the astrochemical environment through cluster dynamics, which is otherwise attributed to dust and ice-driven processes.

Multi-particle Lagrangian statistics in homogeneous rotating turbulence

Geophysical flows are often turbulent and subject to rotation. This rotation modifies the structure of turbulence and is thereby expected to sensibly affect its Lagrangian properties. Here, we investigate the relative dispersion and geometry of pairs, triads and tetrads in homogeneous rotating turbulence, by using direct numerical simulations at different rotation rates. Pair dispersion is shown to be faster in the vertical direction (along the rotation axis) than in the horizontal one. At long times, in Taylor's regime, this is due to the slower decorrelation of the vertical velocity component as compared to the horizontal one. At short times, in the ballistic regime, this result can be interpreted by considering pairs of different orientations at the release time, and is a signature of the anisotropy of Eulerian second-order functions. Rotation also enhances the distortion of triads and tetrads also present in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. In particular, at long times, the flattening of tetrads increases with the rotation rate. The maximal dimension of triads and tetrads is shown to be preferentially aligned with the rotation axis, in agreement with our observations for pairs.

Detailed derivation of scale-Space Energy Density Transport Equation for Compressible Inhomogeneous Turbulent Flows

Scale-space energy density function, $E(\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{r})$, is defined as the derivative of the two-point velocity correlation. The function E describes the turbulent kinetic energy density of scale r at a location x and can be considered as the generalization of spectral energy density function concept to inhomogeneous flows. We derive the transport equation for the scale-space energy density function in compressible flows to develop a better understanding of scale-to-scale energy transfer and the degree of non-locality of the energy interactions. Specifically, the effects of variable-density and dilatation on turbulence energy dynamics are identified. It is expected that these findings will yield deeper insight into compressibility effects leading to improved models at all levels of closure for mass flux, density-variance, pressure-dilatation, pressure-strain correlation and dilatational dissipation processes.

Simultaneous Raman based Power Combining and Wavelength Conversion of High-power Fiber Lasers

We present a technique for simultaneous power-combining and wavelength-conversion of multiple fiber lasers into a single, lower wavelength in a different band through Raman-based, nonlinear power combining. We illustrate this by power combining of two independent Ytterbium lasers into a single wavelength around 1.5micron with high output powers of upto 99W. A high conversion efficiency of ~64% of the quantum limited efficiency and a high level of wavelength conversion with >85% of the output power in the final wavelength is demonstrated. The proposed method enables power-scaling in various wavelength bands where conventional fiber lasers are unavailable or limited in power.

High power, fixed and tunable wavelength, Grating-free Cascaded Raman fiber Lasers

Cascaded Raman lasers enable high powers at various wavelength bands inaccessible with conventional rare-earth doped lasers. The input and output wavelengths of conventional implementations are fixed by the constituent fiber gratings necessary for cascaded Raman conversion. We demonstrate here, a simple architecture for high power, fixed and wavelength tunable, grating-free, cascaded Raman conversion between different wavelength bands. The architecture is based on the recently proposed distributed feedback Raman lasers. Here, we implement a module which converts the Ytterbium band to the eye-safe 1.5micron region. We demonstrate pump-limited output powers of over 30W in fixed and continuously wavelength tunable configurations.
