Stronger counterexamples to the topological Tverberg conjecture

Denote by $Δ_M$ the $M$-dimensional simplex. A map $f\colon Δ_M\to\mathbb R^d$ is an almost $r$-embedding if $fσ_1\cap\ldots\cap fσ_r=\emptyset$ whenever $σ_1,\ldots,σ_r$ are pairwise disjoint faces. A counterexample to the topological Tverberg conjecture asserts that if $r$ is not a prime power and $d\ge2r+1$, then there is an almost $r$-embedding $Δ_{(d+1)(r-1)}\to\mathbb R^d$. This was improved by Blagojević-Frick-Ziegler using a simple construction of higher-dimensional counterexamples by taking $k$-fold join power of lower-dimensional ones. We improve this further (for $d$ large compared to $r$): If $r$ is not a prime power and $N:=(d+1)r-r\Big\lceil\dfrac{d+2}{r+1}\Big\rceil-2$, then there is an almost $r$-embedding $Δ_N\to\mathbb R^d$. For the $r$-fold van Kampen-Flores conjecture we also produce counterexamples which are stronger than previously known. Our proof is based on generalizations of the Mabillard-Wagner theorem on construction of almost $r$-embeddings from equivariant maps, and of the Özaydin theorem on existence of equivariant maps.

Eliminating Higher-Multiplicity Intersections, III. Codimension 2

We study conditions under which a finite simplicial complex $K$ can be mapped to $\mathbb R^d$ without higher-multiplicity intersections. An almost $r$-embedding is a map $f: K\to \mathbb R^d$ such that the images of any $r$ pairwise disjoint simplices of $K$ do not have a common point. We show that if $r$ is not a prime power and $d\geq 2r+1$, then there is a counterexample to the topological Tverberg conjecture, i.e., there is an almost $r$-embedding of the $(d+1)(r-1)$-simplex in $\mathbb R^d$. This improves on previous constructions of counterexamples (for $d\geq 3r$) based on a series of papers by M. Özaydin, M. Gromov, P. Blagojević, F. Frick, G. Ziegler, and the second and fourth present authors. The counterexamples are obtained by proving the following algebraic criterion in codimension 2: If $r\ge3$ and if $K$ is a finite $2(r-1)$-complex then there exists an almost $r$-embedding $K\to \mathbb R^{2r}$ if and only if there exists a general position PL map $f:K\to \mathbb R^{2r}$ such that the algebraic intersection number of the $f$-images of any $r$ pairwise disjoint simplices of $K$ is zero. This result can be restated in terms of cohomological obstructions or equivariant maps, and extends an analogous codimension 3 criterion by the second and fourth authors. As another application we classify ornaments $f:S^3 \sqcup S^3\sqcup S^3\to \mathbb R^5$ up to ornament concordance. It follows from work of M. Freedman, V. Krushkal and P. Teichner that the analogous criterion for $r=2$ is false. We prove a lemma on singular higher-dimensional Borromean rings, yielding an elementary proof of the counterexample.

The NuMI Neutrino Beam

This paper describes the hardware and operations of the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab. It elaborates on the design considerations for the beam as a whole and for individual elements. The most important design details of individual components are described. Beam monitoring systems and procedures, including the tuning and alignment of the beam and NuMI long-term performance, are also discussed.

Vector and Axial Nucleon Form Factors:A Duality Constrained Parameterization

We present new parameterizations of vector and axial nucleon form factors. We maintain an excellent descriptions of the form factors at low momentum transfers, where the spatial structure of the nucleon is important, and use the Nachtman scaling variable xi to relate elastic and inelastic form factors and impose quark-hadron duality constraints at high momentum transfers where the quark structure dominates. We use the new vector form factors to re-extract updated values of the axial form factor from neutrino experiments on deuterium. We obtain an updated world average value from neutrino-d and pion electroproduction experiments of M_A = 1.014 +- 0.014 GeV/c2. Our parameterizations are useful in modeling neutrino interactions at low energies (e.g. for neutrino oscillations experiments). The predictions for high momentum transfers can be tested in the next generation electron and neutrino scattering experiments.

Extraction of the Axial Nucleon Form Factor from Neutrino Experiments on Deuterium

We present new parameterizations of vector and axial nucleon form factors. We maintain an excellent descriptions of the form factors at low momentum transfers ($Q^2$), where the spatial structure of the nucleon is important, and use the Nachtman scaling variable $ξ$ to relate elastic and inelastic form factors and impose quark-hadron duality constraints at high $Q^2$ where the quark structure dominates. We use the new vector form factors to re-extract updated values of the axial form factor from $\numu$ experiments on deuterium. We obtain an updated world average value from $\numu$d, $\numubar$H and pion electroproduction experiments of $M_{A}$ = $1.014 \pm 0.014 GeV/c^2$. Our parameterizations are useful in modeling $ν$ interactions at low energies (e.g. for $\numu$ oscillations experiments). The predictions for high $Q^2$ can be tested in the next generation electron and $\numu$ scattering experiments.

Precise Measurement of Neutrino and Anti-neutrino Differential Cross Sections

The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab has obtained a unique high statistics sample of neutrino and anti-neutrino interactions using its high-energy sign-selected beam. We present a measurement of the differential cross section for charged-current neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering from iron. Structure functions, F_2(x,Q^2) and xF_3(x,Q^2), are determined by fitting the inelasticity, y, dependence of the cross sections. This measurement has significantly improved systematic precision as a consequence of more precise understanding of hadron and muon energy scales.

A Departure from Prediction: Electroweak Physics at Nutev

The NuTeV experiment has performed precision measurements of the ratio of neutral-current to charged-current cross-sections in high rate, high energy neutrino and anti-neutrino beams on a dense, primarily steel, target. The separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, high statistics, and improved control of other experimental systematics, allow the determination of electroweak parameters with significantly greater precision than past neutrino-nucleon scattering experiments. Our null hypothesis test of the standard model prediction measures sin2thetaW=0.2277+/-0.0013(stat)+/-0.0009(syst), a value which is 3.0 standard deviations above the prediction. We discuss possible explanations for and implications of this discrepancy.

A Precise Determination of Electroweak Parameters in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering

The NuTeV collaboration has extracted sin^2theta_W from the ratios of neutral current to charged current neutrino and anti-neutrino cross-sections. Our value, sin^2theta_W(on-shell)=0.2277+/-0.0013(stat)+/-0.0009(syst), is three standard deviations above the standard model prediction. We also present a model independent analysis of the same data.

A Search for Muon-neutrino to Electron-neutrino and Muon-antineutrino to Electron-antineutrino Oscillations at NuTeV

Limits on $ν_μ\to ν_e$ and $\barν_μ\to \barν_e$ oscillations are extracted using the NuTeV detector with sign-selected $ν_μ$ and $\nub_μ$ beams. In $\nub_μ$ mode, for the case of $\sin^2 2α= 1$, $Δm^2 > 2.6$ ${\rm eV^2}$ is excluded, and for $Δm^2 \gg 1000$ ${\rm eV^2}$, $\sin^2 2α> 1.1 \times 10^{-3}$. The NuTeV data exclude the high $Δm^2$ end of $\barν_μ\to \barν_e$ oscillations parameters favored by the LSND experiment without the need to assume that the oscillation parameters for $ν$ and $\nub$ are the same. We present the most stringent experimental limits for $ν_μ(\barν_μ) \to ν_e (\barν_e)$ oscillations in the large $Δm^2$ region.

Extraction of R = sigma_L/sigma_T from CCFR nu_mu-Fe and nubar_mu-Fe differential cross sections

We report on the extraction of R=sigma_L/sigma_T from CCFR nu_mu-Fe and nubar_mu-Fe differential cross sections. The CCFR differential cross sections do not show the deviations from the QCD expectations that are seen in the CDHSW data at very low and very high x. R as measured in nu_mu scattering is in agreement with R as measured in muon and electron scattering. All data on R for Q^2 > 1 GeV^2 are in agreement with a NNLO QCD calculation which includes target mass effects. We report on the first measurements of R in the low x and Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 region (where an anomalous large rise in R for nuclear targets has been observed by the HERMES collaboration).

R as measured in neutrno scattering is in agreement with $R$ as measured in muon and electron scattering. All data on R for Q2 > 1 GeV2 are in agreement with a NNLO QCD calculation which uses NNLO PDFs and includes target mass effects. We report on the first measurements of R in the low x and Q2 < 1 GeV2 region (where an anomalous large rise in R for nuclear targets has been observed by the HERMES collaboration).

Observation of an Anomalous Number of Dimuon Events in a High Energy Neutrino Beam

A search for long-lived neutral particles (N^0's) with masses above 2.2 GeV/c^2 that decay into at least one muon has been performed using an instrumented decay channel at the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. Data were examined for particles decaying into the final states mu mu, mu e, and mu pi. Three mu mu events were observed over an expected Standard Model background of 0.069 +/- 0.010 events; no events were observed in the other modes.

Recent structure function results from neutrino scattering at Fermilab

We report on the extraction of the structure functions F_2 and Delta xF_3 = xF_3(nu)-xF_3(nubar) from CCFR nu_mu-Fe and nubar_mu-Fe different ial cross sections. The extraction is performed in a physics model independent (PMI) way. This first measurement of Delta xF_3, which is useful in testing models of heavy charm production, is higher than current theoretical predictios. The ratio of the F_2 (PMI) values measured in nu_mu and mu scattering is in agreement (within 5%) with the NLO predictions using massive charm production schemes, thus resolving the long-standing discrepancy between the two sets of data. In addition, measurements of F_L (or, equivalently, R) and 2xF_1 are reported in the kinematic region where anomalous nuclear effects in R are observed at HERMES.

New Measurements of Nucleon Structure Functions from CCFR/NuTeV

We report on the extraction of the structure functions F_2 and Delta xF_3 = xF_3nu-xF_3nub from CCFR neutrino-Fe and antineutrino-Fe differential cross sections. The extraction is performed in a physics model independent (PMI) way. This first measurement for Delta xF_3, which is useful in testing models of heavy charm production, is higher than current theoretical predictions. Within 5% the F_2 (PMI) values measured in neutrino and muon scattering are in agreement with the predictions of Next-to-Leading-Order PDFs (using massive charm production schemes), thus resolving the long-standing discrepancy between the two measurements.

Observation of Anomalous Dimuon Events in the NuTeV Decay Detector

A search for long-lived neutral particles (N^0) which decay into at least one muon has been performed using an instrumented decay channel at the E815 (NuTeV) experiment at Fermilab. The decay channel was composed of helium bags interspersed with drift chambers, and was used in conjunction with the NuTeV neutrino detector to search for N^0 decays. The data were examined for particles decaying into the muonic final states mu mu, mu e, and mu pi. Three mu mu events were observed over an expected background of 0.040 +/- 0.009 events; no events were observed in the other modes. Although the observed events share some characteristics with neutrino interactions, the observed rate is a factor of 75 greater than expected. No Standard Model process appears to be consistent with this observation.
