Ammonia and CO observations toward low-luminosity 6.7-GHz methanol masers

To investigate whether distinctions exist between low and high-luminosity Class II 6.7-GHz methanol masers, we have undertaken multi-line mapping observations of various molecular lines, including the NH3(1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (4,4) and 12CO(1-0) transitions, towards a sample of 9 low-luminosity 6.7-GHz masers, and 12CO (1-0) observations towards a sample of 8 high-luminosity 6.7-GHz masers, for which we already had NH3 spectral line data. Emission in the NH3 (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) transitions was detected in 8 out of 9 low-luminosity maser sources, in which 14 cores were identified. We derive densities, column densities, temperatures, core sizes and masses of both low and high-luminosity maser regions. Comparative analysis of the physical quantities reveals marked distinctions between the low-luminosity and high-luminosity groups: in general, cores associated with high-luminosity 6.7-GHz masers are larger and more massive than those traced by low-luminosity 6.7-GHz masers; regions traced by the high-luminosity masers have larger column densities but lower densities than those of the low-luminosity maser regions. Further, strong correlations between 6.7-GHz maser luminosity and NH3(1,1) and (2,2) line widths are found, indicating that internal motions in high-luminosity maser regions are more energetic than those in low-luminosity maser regions. A 12CO (1-0) outflow analysis also shows distinctions in that outflows associated with high-luminosity masers have wider line wings and larger sizes than those associated with low-luminosity masers.

Superconductivity and single crystal growth of Ni0:05TaS2

Superconductivity was discovered in a Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal. A Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal was successfully grown via the NaCl/KCl flux method. The obtained lattice constant c of Ni0:05TaS2 is 1.1999 nm, which is significantly smaller than that of 2H-TaS2 (1.208 nm). Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that the superconductivity transition temperature of Ni0:05TaS2 is enhanced from 0.8 K (2H-TaS2) to 3.9 K. The charge-density-wave transition of the matrix compound 2H-TaS2 is suppressed in Ni0:05TaS2. The success of Ni0:05TaS2 single crystal growth via a NaCl/KCl flux demonstrates that NaCl/KCl flux method will be a feasible method for single crystal growth of the layered transition metal dichalcogenides.

Large magnetic entropy change near room temperature in antipervoskite SnCMn3

We report the observation of large magnetocaloric effect near room temperature in antipervoskite SnCMn3. The maximal magnetic entropy change at the first-order ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature (TC 279 K) is about 80.69mJ/cm3 K and 133mJ/cm3 K under the magnetic field of 20 kOe and 48 kOe, respectively. These values are close to those of typical magnetocaloric materials. The large magnetocaloric effect is associated with the sharp change of lattice, resistivity and magnetization in the vicinity of TC. Through the measurements of Seebeck coefficient and normal Hall effect, the title system is found to undergo a reconstruction of electronic structure at TC. Considering its low-cost and innocuous raw materials, Mn-based antiperovskite compounds are suggested to be appropriate for pursuing new materials with larger magnetocaloric effect.

Crystal growth and superconductivity of FeSe_x

Single crystals FeSe_x have been grown in evacuated sealed quartz tube using a NaCl/KCl flux. The products include two crystal structures of tetragon and hexagon. The electronic transport and magnetic properties measurements of FeSe_x single crystal exhibits a superconducting transition at about 10K.

Prediction of Half Metallicity along the Edge of Boron Nitride Zigzag Nanoribbons

First-principles calculations reveal half metallicity in zigzag boron nitride (BN) nanoribbons (ZBNNRs). When the B edge, but not the N edge, of the ZBNNR is passivated, despite being a pure $sp$-electron system, the ribbon shows a giant spin splitting. The electrons at the Fermi level are 100% spin polarized with a half-metal gap of 0.38 eV and its conductivity is dominated by metallic single-spin states. The two states across at the Dirac point have different molecular origins, which signals a switch of carrier velocity. The ZBNNR should be a good potential candidate for widegap spintronics.

Self-diffusion on Si(001) mono-hydride surfaces revisited: The role of adatom clustering

First-principles total-energy calculations of the H/Si(001)-2x1 surfaces reveals a dual diffusion process for the Si adatoms: single along the dimer row while pairing up across the row. The calculated diffusion barrier along the dimer row is 1.1 eV, which is, however, too small to account for the hydrogen-induced growth disruption seen by experiments. Instead, we find that the adatom diffusion, in the presence of H, leads to the formation of immobile fourfold-ring Si tetramers which are difficult to break. This could explain the adverse effects of H on Si homoepitaxy.
