New scalar resonances from sneutrino-Higgs mixing in supersymmetry with small lepton number (R-parity) violation

We consider new s-channel scalar exchanges in top quark and massive gauge-bosons pair production in e+e- collisions, in supersymmetry with a small lepton number violation. We show that a soft bilinear lepton number violating term in the scalar potential which mixes the Higgs and the slepton fields can give rise to a significant scalar resonance enhancement in e+e- -> ZZ, W+W- and in e+e- -> t t(bar). The sneutrino-Higgs mixed state couples to the incoming light leptons through its sneutrino component and to either the top quark or the massive gauge bosons through its Higgs component. Such a scalar resonance in these specific production channels cannot result from trilinear Yukawa-like R-parity violation alone, and may, therefore, stand as strong evidence for the existence of R-parity violating bilinears in the supersymmetric scalar potential. We use the LEP2 measurements of the WW and ZZ cross-sections to place useful constrains on this scenario, and investigate the expectations for the sensitivity of a future linear collider to these signals. We find that signals of these scalar resonances, in particular in top-pair production, are well within the reach of linear colliders in the small lepton number violation scenario.

Proposing "b-Parity" - a New Approximate Quantum Number in Inclusive b-jet Production - as an Efficient Probe of New Flavor Physics

We consider the inclusive reaction \ell^+ \ell^- -> nb +X (n = number of b-jets) in lepton colliders for which we propose a useful approximately conserved quantum number b_P=(-1)^n that we call b-Parity (b_P). We make the observation that the Standard Model (SM) is essentially b_P-even since SM b_P-violating signals are necessarily CKM suppressed. In contrast new flavor physics can produce b_P=-1 signals whose only significant SM background is due to b-jet misidentification. Thus, we show that b-jet counting, which relies primarily on b-tagging, becomes a very simple and sensitive probe of new flavor physics (i.e., of b_P-violation).

Sneutrino-Higgs mixing in WW and ZZ production in supersymmetry with R-parity violation

We consider new s-channel scalar exchanges in e+e- -> ZZ,W+W- in supersymmetry with a small lepton number violation. We show that a small bilinear R-parity violating term which leads to sneutrino--Higgs mixing can give rise to a significant scalar resonance enhancement in e+e- -> ZZ,W+W-. We use the LEP2 measurements of the WW and ZZ cross-sections to place useful constraints on this scenario. We also find, under conservative assumptions on the relevant parameter space involved, that such an exchange of the sneutrino-like admixture in e+e- -> ZZ,W+W- may be accessible to a 500 GeV e+e- collider.

Flavor changing single top quark production channels at e^+e^- colliders in the effective Lagrangian description

We perform a global analysis of the sensitivity of LEP2 and e^+e^- colliders with a c.m. energy in the range 500 - 2000 GeV to new flavor-changing single top quark production in the effective Lagrangian approach. The processes considered are sensitive to new flavor-changing effective vertices such as Ztc, htc, four-Fermi tcee contact terms as well as a right-handed Wtb coupling. We show that e^+ e^- colliders are most sensitive to the physics responsible for the contact tcee vertices. For example, it is found that the recent data from the 189 GeV LEP2 run can be used to rule out any new flavor physics that can generate these four-Fermi operators up to energy scales of Λ> 0.7 - 1.4 TeV, depending on the type of the four-Fermi interaction. We also show that a corresponding limit of Λ> 1.3 - 2.5 and Λ> 17 - 27 TeV can be reached at the future 200 GeV LEP2 run and a 1000 GeV e^+e^- collider, respectively. We note that these limits are much stronger than the typical limits which can be placed on flavor diagonal four-Fermi couplings. Similar results hold for μ^+μ^- colliders and for tu(bar) associated production. Finally we briefly comment on the necessity of measuring all flavor-changing effective vertices as they can be produced by different types of heavy physics.

R-parity violation, sneutrino mixing phenomena and CP-violation in p \bar p -> sneutrino -> l^+ l^- + X

The sneutrino resonance reactions p \bar p -> sneutrino -> l^+ l^- +X, for l=e,μ,τ, in the MSSM without R-parity are considered. We perform a cross-section analysis and show that present limits on some products of R-parity violating couplings in the sneutrino sector can be significantly improved in future upgraded Fermilab Tevatron runs. Furthermore, we introduce CP-violating and CP-conserving τ-spin asymmetries which are generated already at the TREE-LEVEL in the reaction p \bar p -> sneutrino -> τ^+ τ^- +X if there is muon-sneutrino - \bar muon-sneutrino mixing and that vanish in the SM. We find, for example, that for muon-sneutrino masses in the range 150 GeV < m_{muon-sneutrino} < 450 GeV, these spin asymmetries reach ~ 20 - 30% and ~ 10% for mass splitting between the muon-sneutrino CP-odd and CP-even states at the level of Δm ~ Γand Δm ~ Γ/4, respectively, where Γis the muon-sneutrino width. Both the CP-violating and the CP-conserving spin asymmetries should be detectable in future Tevatron runs even for a heavy sneutrino with a mass < 500 GeV. If detected, such asymmetries - being proportional to the mass splitting between the CP-even and CP-odd sneutrino states - may serve as a strong indication for the existence of the sneutrino mixing phenomenon.

The flavor changing top decay t-->c+sneutrino or sneutrino-->t+c(bar) in the MSSM without R-parity

Widths for the new flavor changing top quark decay t-->c+sneutrino or for the reversed sneutrino decay sneutrino-->t+c(bar) are calculated in the MSSM without R-parity conservation. For large \tanβ, e.g., \tanβ~ m_t/m_b ~ 40, Br(t-->c+sneutrino) > 10^{-5} or Br(sneutrino-->t+c(bar)) > 10^{-6} in a relatively wide range of the supersymmetric parameter space as long as there is more than one non-zero R-parity violating coupling. In the best cases, with a typical squark mass around 100 GeV, we find that Br(t-->c+sneutrino) ~ 10^{-4} - 10^{-3} or Br(sneutrino-->t+c(bar)) ~ 10^{-5} - 10^{-4}. For \tanβ~ O(1) the corresponding branching ratios for both top or sneutrino decays are too small to be measured at the LHC. Therefore, the decays t-->c+sneutrino or sneutrino-->t+c(bar) appear to be sensitive to \tanβand may be detected at the LHC. The branching ratios of the corresponding decays to an up quark instead of a charm quark, e.g., t-->u+sneutrino or sneutrino-->t+u(bar), may also be similar.

CP-Violation in the Top Sector

We discuss the prospects - within several models - for the observation of CP-violation (CPV) in top decays and production. The outlook looks best for t -> bW at the LHC (MSSM CPV), t -> b τν_τat TeV3, LHC and NLC (H^+ CPV), p p-bar -> t b-bar + X at TeV3 (MSSM CPV), p p -> t t-bar + X at the LHC (MSSM CPV and neutral Higgs CPV) and for e^+ e^- -> t t-bar h, t t-bar Z, where h is the lowest mass neutral Higgs boson, at an NLC with energy \geq 1 TeV (neutral Higgs CPV).

R-parity violation and uses of the rare decay sneutrino-->gamma+gamma in hadron and photon colliders

We consider implications of the loop process sneutrino -> gamma gamma in the MSSM with R-parity violation for future experiments, where the sneutrino is produced as the only supersymmetric particle. We present a scenario for the R-parity violating couplings, where this clean decay, although rare with Br(sneutrino -> gamma gamma) ~ 10^{-6}, may be useful for sneutrino detection over a range of sneutrino masses at the LHC. Furthermore, the new sneutrino-gamma-gamma effective coupling may induce detectable sneutrino resonant production in gamma gamma collisions, over a considerably wide mass range. We compare sneutrino -> gamma gamma, gg throughout the paper with the analogous yet quantitatively very different, Higgs -> gamma gamma, gg decays and comment on the loop processes sneutrino -> WW, ZZ.

R-parity violation and CP-violating and CP-conserving spin asymmetries in l^+ l^- -> sneutrino -> tau^+ tau^-: probing sneutrino mixing at LEP2, NLC and mu^+mu^- colliders

We consider the sneutrino resonance reaction l^+ l^- -> sneutrino -> tau^+ tau^- in the MSSM without R-parity. We introduce new CP-violating and CP-conserving tau-spin asymmetries which are generated already at the tree-level if there is sneutrino - sneutrino-bar mixing and that are forbidden in the SM. It is remarkable that these spin asymmetries can reach ~75% around resonance for a sneutrino mass splitting of Δm ~ Γand ~10% for a splitting as low as Δm ~ 0.1Γ, where Γis the sneutrino width. We show that they are easily detectable already at LEP2 so long as the beam energy is within ~10 GeV range around the muon-sneutrino masses and may therefore serve as extremely powerful probes of sneutrino mixing phenomena.

CP Violation In Single Top Production And Decay Via p p-bar -> t b-bar +X -> W^+ b b-bar +X Within The MSSM: A Possible Application For Measuring \arg(A_t) At Hadron Colliders

CP-nonconserving effects in the reaction p p-bar -> t b-bar +X -> W^+ b b-bar +X, driven by the supersymmetric CP-odd phase of the stop trilinear soft breaking term, \arg(A_t), are studied. We discuss the CP-nonconserving effects in both production and the associated decay amplitudes of the top. We find that, within a plausible low energy scenario of the MSSM and keeping the neutron electric dipole moment below its current limit, a CP-violating cross-section asymmetry as large as 2-3% can arise if some of the parameters lie in a favorable range. A partial rate asymmetry originating only in the top decay t -> W^+ b is found to be, in general, below the 0.1% level which is somewhat smaller than previous claims. For a low \tanβof order one the decay asymmetry can reach at the most ~0.3%. This (few) percent level overall CP-violating signal in p p-bar -> t b-bar +X -> W^+ b b-bar +X might be within the reach of the future 2(4) TeV pp-bar Tevatron collider that may be able to produce ~10000(~30000) such tb-bar events with an integrated luminosity of 30 fb^{-1}. In particular, it may be used to place an upper bound on \arg(A_t) if indeed \arg(μ) -> 0, as implied from the present experimental limit on the neutron electric dipole moment. The partial rate asymmetry in the top decay (~few \times 10^{-3}) may also be within the reach of the LHC with ~10^7 pairs of tt-bar produced, provided detector systematics are sufficiently small. We also show that if the GUT-scale universality of the soft breaking trilinear $A$ terms is relaxed, then the phases associated with \arg A_u and \arg A_d can take values up to ~few \times 10^{-1} even with squarks and gluino masses of several hundred GeV's without contradicting the experimental limit on the neutron electric dipole moment.

Implications of a W^+W^- (ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar$ Interaction for e^+e^- -> t c-bar ν_e ν_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and for t -> cW^+W^-, cZZ in a Two Higgs Doublet Model

The Standard Model with one extra Higgs doublet may give rise to enhanced TREE-LEVEL flavor-changing-scalar coupling of a neutral Higgs to a pair of top-charm quarks. This coupling may drive a large TREE-LEVEL effective W^+W^-(ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar interaction. As a result we find that the reactions e^+e^- -> t c-bar ν_e ν_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and the two rare top decays t -> cW^+W^-, t -> cZZ become very sensitive probes of such an effective interaction. The most promising ones, e^+e^- -> t c-bar ν_e ν_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, may yield several hundreds and up to thousands of such events at the Next Linear Collider with a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=0.5 - 2 TeV if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs is a few hundred GeV. The rare decays t -> cW^+W^- and t -> cZZ may be accessible at the LHC if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs lies in the narrow window 150 GeV < m_h < 200 GeV.

Two Higgs Doublets Models and CP Violating Higgs Exchange in e+ e- -> t bar-t Z

Appreciable CP Asymmetries (~ 10%) can arise in the reaction e+ e- -> t bar-t Z already at TREE-LEVEL in models with two Higgs doublets. For a neutral Higgs particle, h, with a mass in the range 50 GeV < m_h < 400 GeV, it may be possible to detect a 2-3 sigma CP-odd effect in e+ e- -> t bar-t Z in ~ 1-2 years of running of a future high energy e+e- collider with c.m. energies of ~ 1-2 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 200-500 inverse fb.

Probing the Flavor-Changing tc vertex via Tree-Level Processes: e+e- -> t bar-c nu_e bar-nu_e, t bar-c e+ e- and t -> c W+ W-

The reactions e+e- -> t bar-c nu_e bar-nu_e, t bar-c e+ e- are very sensitive probes of the flavor-changing-scalar couplings which can occur in a model with one extra Higgs doublet. At the Next Linear Collider, with a center of mass energy of sqrt{s}=0.5--2 TeV, several hundreds and up to thousands of such events may be produced if the mass of the light neutral Higgs is a few hundred GeV. We also briefly comment on the decays t -> c W+ W-, t -> c Z Z. All of these reactions are severely suppressed in the Standard Model

Large Tree Level CP Violation in $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}H^0$ in The Two Higgs Doublet Model

We find a large CP violation effect within the Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model for the reaction $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}H^0$ at future linear colliders. The CP-asymmetry arises already at the tree level as a result of interference between diagrams with $H^0$ emission from $t$ (and $\bar{t}$) and its emission from a $Z^0$ and can be about 10--20\%. In the best case one needs a few hundred $t\bar{t}H^0$ events to observe CP violation at the 3$σ$ level.
