Control of intervalley scattering in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ via temperature-dependent band renormalization

The control of out-of-equilibrium electron dynamics in topological insulators is essential to unlock their potential in next-generation quantum technologies. However, the role of temperature on the renormalization of the electronic band structure and, consequently, on electron scattering processes is still elusive. Here, using high-resolution time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES), we show that even a modest ($\sim$15 meV) renormalization of the conduction band of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ can critically affect bulk and surface electron scattering processes. Supported by a kinetic Monte Carlo toy-model, we show that temperature-induced changes in the bulk band structure modulate the intervalley electron-phonon scattering rate, reshaping the out-of-equilibrium response. This work establishes temperature as an effective control knob for engineering scattering pathways in topological insulators.

Multimode Objective Lens for Momentum Microscopy and XPEEM: Experiments

A new type of objective lens has recently been proposed for use in X-ray photoemission electron microscopes (XPEEMs) and momentum microscopes. Adding a ring electrode concentric with the extractor allows the field in the gap between the sample and the extractor to be shaped. Forming a lens field in this gap reduces the field strength at the sample by up to an order of magnitude. This mitigates the risk of field emission, particularly for cleaved samples with sharp edges. A retarding field can redirect all slow electrons, thus eliminating the primary contribution to the space-charge interaction. Here we present the first experimental investigation of the new lens, examining its performance at photon energies ranging from the extreme ultraviolet produced by a high-harmonic generation (HHG)-based source to soft and hard X-rays at two synchrotron facilities. The gap lens in a region without electrodes enables large working distances up to 23 mm. Reduced aberrations allow for larger fields of view in both k-space and real-space imaging, with resolutions comparable to those of conventional cathode lenses. However, field strengths are an order of magnitude smaller. The zero-field mode enables the study of 3D structured objects and is therefore beneficial for small cleaved samples as well as for operando devices involving top electrodes. The repeller mode reduces space-charge effects, but results in a smaller k-field diameter. This reduction ranges from 10% at hard X-ray energies to 50% in the XUV range. The usable energy interval is also reduced by a factor of two. In time-of-flight XPEEM mode the raw data show a resolution of 250 nm, which can be improved to better than 100 nm through data processing.

Coherent Light Control of a Metastable Hidden Phase

Metastable phases present a promising route to expand the functionality of complex materials. Of particular interest are light-induced metastable phases that are inaccessible under equilibrium conditions, as they often host new, emergent properties switchable on ultrafast timescales. However, the processes governing the trajectories to such hidden phases remain largely unexplored. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the formation of a hidden quantum state in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ upon photoexcitation. Our results reveal the nonthermal character of the transition governed by a collective charge-density-wave excitation. Utilizing a double-pulse excitation of the structural mode, we show vibrational coherent control of the phase-transition efficiency. Our demonstration of exceptional control, switching speed, and stability of the hidden phase are key for device applications.

Ousiometrics: The essence of meaning aligns with a power-danger-structure framework instead of valence-arousal-dominance

From work emerging through the middle of the 20th century, the essence of meaning has become widely accepted as being described by the three orthogonal dimensions of valence, arousal, and dominance (VAD). These essential dimensions have become the cornerstone of sentiment analysis across many fields. By re-examining first types and then tokens for the English language, and through the use of automatically annotated histograms -- `ousiograms' -- we find here that: The essence of meaning conveyed by words is instead best described by a goodness-power-aggression-danger-structure circumplex framework (GPADS); that large-scale English language corpora reveal a systematic bias toward safe, low-danger words; and that the power-danger-structure (PDS) framework is the minimal framework that represents essential meaning. We find remarkable congruences between the GPADS framework and other spaces including mental states and fictional archetypes, and we construct and demonstrate a prototype ousiometer.

Ultrafast Momentum-resolved Hot Electron Dynamics in the Two-dimensional Topological Insulator Bismuthene

Two-dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators are a promising material class for spintronic applications based on topologically-protected spin currents in their edges. Yet, they have not lived up to their technological potential, as experimental realizations are scarce and limited to cryogenic temperatures. These constraints have also severely restricted characterization of their dynamical properties. Here, we report on the electron dynamics of the novel room-temperature QSH candidate bismuthene after photoexcitation using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We map the transiently occupied conduction band and track the full relaxation pathway of hot photocarriers. Intriguingly, we observe photocarrier lifetimes much shorter than in \red{conventional} semiconductors. This is ascribed to the presence of topological in-gap states already established by local probes. Indeed, we find spectral signatures consistent with these earlier findings. Demonstration of the large band gap and the view into photoelectron dynamics mark a critical step toward optical control of QSH functionalities.

A quantitative comparison of time-of-flight momentum microscopes and hemispherical analyzers for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments

Time-of-flight-based momentum microscopy has a growing presence in photoemission studies, as it enables parallel energy- and momentum-resolved acquisition of the full photoelectron distribution. Here, we report table-top extreme ultraviolet (XUV) time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) featuring both a hemispherical analyzer and a momentum microscope within the same setup. We present a systematic comparison of the two detection schemes and quantify experimentally relevant parameters, including pump- and probe-induced space-charge effects, detection efficiency, photoelectron count rates, and depth of focus. We highlight the advantages and limitations of both instruments based on exemplary trARPES measurements of bulk WSe2. Our analysis demonstrates the complementary nature of the two spectrometers for time-resolved ARPES experiments. Their combination in a single experimental apparatus allows us to address a broad range of scientific questions with trARPES.

Photoexcitation Circular Dichroism in Chiral Molecules

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and fundamental in science, from particle physics to metamaterials. The most established technique of chiral discrimination - photoabsorption circular dichroism - relies on the magnetic properties of a chiral medium and yields an extremely weak chiral response. We propose and demonstrate a new, orders of magnitude more sensitive type of circular dichroism in neutral molecules: photoexitation circular dichroism. It does not rely on weak magnetic effects, but takes advantage of the coherent helical motion of bound electrons excited by ultrashort circularly polarized light. It results in an ultrafast chiral response and the efficient excitation of a macroscopic chiral density in an initially isotropic ensemble of randomly oriented chiral molecules. We probe this excitation without the aid of further chiral interactions using linearly polarized laser pulses. Our time-resolved study of vibronic chiral dynamics opens a way to the efficient initiation, control and monitoring of chiral chemical change in neutral molecules at the level of electrons.

Stellar luminosity functions of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also obtain luminosity functions, Phi (Mv), down to Mv ~ 6 (m/msun > 0.6), and investigate their dependence with distance from the cluster centre well beyond their half-light radius. In all clusters we find a systematic increase in the luminosity function slope with radial distance from the centre. Among the clusters displaying significant mass segregation are the two youngest in the sample: NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. For these two clusters we obtain present-day mass functions. The NGC 1818 mass function is in excellent agreement with that derived by other authors, also using HST data. They young cluster mass function slopes differ, that of NCG 1805 being systematically steeper than NGC 1818. Since these are very young stellar systems (age < 40 Myrs), these variations may reflect the initial conditions rather than evolution due to internal dynamics.

Deep STIS Luminosity Functions for LMC Clusters

We present deep luminosity functions derived from HST STIS data for three rich LMC clusters (NGC 1805, NGC 1868, and NGC 2209), and for one Galactic globular cluster (NGC 6553). All of the LMC cluster luminosity functions are roughly consistent with a Salpeter IMF or with the solar neighbourhood IMF from Kroupa, Tout & Gilmore (1993). They continue to rise at least to 0.7 Msun. NGC 1868 shows evidence for mass segregation which may be primordial. A comparison of deep luminsoisty functions for seven Galactic globulars shows that the luminosity functions are eroded at low masses by amounts that are strongly correlated with distance from the Galactic plane.

NGC 2915. II. A Dark Spiral Galaxy With A Blue Compact Dwarf Core

Abridged abstract: We present HI synthesis observations of the weak blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC~2915. NGC~2915 has the HI properties of a late type spiral galaxy (Sd - Sm), including a double horn global profile, and HI spiral arms. The HI extends out to over five times the Holmberg radius. The optical counterpart corresponds to a central HI bar. The rotation curve is derived and fitted with a mass model consisting of a stellar disk, a neutral gas disk, and a dark matter (DM) halo. The DM halo dominates at nearly all radii. The total mass to blue light ratio is 76 within the last measured point, making NGC~2915 one of the darkest disk galaxies known. The core of the DM halo is unusually dense (rho_0 ~ 0.1, M_sun pc^{-3}) and compact (R_core approx 1 kpc). The neutral gas component, with mass M_g = 1.27x10^9 M_sun is probably more massive than the stellar component. Split and broad HI lines (line of sight velocity dispersion, sigma ~ 35 km/s) are seen in the central region. Pressure support is probably significant, and it is not clear whether the core is in equilibrium. Beyond the Holmberg radius, the average HI sigma is 8 km/s, which is normal for disk galaxies. NGC~2915 does not obey the Tully-Fisher (1977) relation, being underluminous by a factor of nine. A simple HI surface density threshold of about 10^{21} cm^{-2} adequately describes the location of current star formation. The HI properties are compared to "normal" disk galaxies and other BCDS.
