Non-Minimal String Corrections And Supergravity

We reconsider the well-known issue of string corrections to Supergravity theory. Our treatment is carried out to second order in the string slope parameter. We establish a procedure for solving the Bianchi identities in the non minimal case, and we solve a long standing problem in the perturbative expansion of D=10, N=1 string corrected Supergravity, obtaining the H sector tensors, torsions and curvatures.

Supersymmetric Mechanics in Superspace

These Lectures have been given at Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in the month of March, 2005. The main idea was to provide our young collegues, who joined us in our attempts to understand the structure of $N$-extended supersymmetric one-dimensional systems, with short descriptions of the methods and techniques we use. This was reflected in the choice of material and in the style of presentation. We base our treatment mainly on the superfield point of view. Moreover, we prefer to deal with N=4 and N=8 superfields. At present, the exists an extensive literature on the components approach to extended supersymmetric theories in $d=1$ while the manifestly supersymmetric formulation in terms of properly constrained superfields is much less known. Nevertheless, we believe that just such formulations are preferable. In order to make these Lectures more or less self-consistent, we started from the simplest examples of one-dimensional supersymmetric theories and paid a lot of attention to the peculiarities of $d=1$ supersymmetry. From time to time we presented the calculations in a very detailed way. In other cases we omitted the details and gave only the final answers. In any case these Lectures cannot be considered as a textbook in any respect. They can be considered as our personal point of view on the one-dimensional superfield theories and on the methods and techniques we believe to be important. Especially, all this concerns Section 3, were we discuss the nonlinear realizations method. We did not present any proofs in this Section. Instead we focused on the details of calculations. Finally, we apologize for the absolutely incomplete list of References.

Sigma model from SU(1,1|2) spin chain

We derive the coherent state representation of the integrable spin chain Hamiltonian with supersymmetry group $SU(1,1|2)$. By the use of a projected Hamiltonian onto bosonic states, we give explicitly the action of the Hamiltonian on $SU(2)\times SL(2)$ coherent states. Passing to the continuous limit, we find that the corresponding bosonic sigma model is the sum of the known SU(2) and SL(2) ones, and thus it gives a string spinning fast on $S^1_{ϕ_1}\times S^1_{ϕ_1}\times S^1_{ϕ_2}$ in $\rm{AdS}_5 \times S^5$. The full sigma model on the supercoset $SU(1,1|2)/SU(1|1)^2$ is given.

Radiation of Relativistic Particles for Quasiperiodic Motion in a Transparent Medium

The radiation of relativistic charged particles for the quasiperiodic motion in a transparent medium is considered. For motion of the general kind the differential probability of the process is obtained. For planar motion the spectral intensity of radiation is found. The different cases of radiation in the medium-filled undulators are studied. In particular, the influence of Cherenkov radiation on the undulator one is discussed.

Integer Spin Hall Effect in Ballistic Quantum Wires

We investigate the ballistic electron transport in a two dimensional Quantum Wire under the action of an electric field ($E_y$). We demonstrate how the presence of a Spin Orbit coupling, due to the uniform electric confinement field gives a non-commutative effect as in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. We discuss how the non commutation implies an edge localization of the currents depending on the electron spins also giving a semi-classical spin dependent Hall current. We also discuss how it is possible obtain a quantized Spin Hall conductance in the ballistic transport regime by developing the Landauer formalism and show the coupling between the spin magnetic momentum and the orbital one due to the presence of a circulating current.

Modulation of Luttinger liquid exponents in multi-walled carbon nanotubes

We develop in this paper a theoretical framework that applies to the intermediate regime between the Coulomb blockade and the Luttinger liquid behavior in multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Our main goal is to confront the experimental observations of transport properties, under conditions in which the thermal energy is comparable to the spacing between the single-particle levels. For this purpose we have devised a many-body approach to the one-dimensional electron system, incorporating the effects of a discrete spectrum. We show that, in the crossover regime, the tunneling conductance follows a power-law behavior as a function of the temperature, with an exponent that oscillates with the gate voltage as observed in the experiments. Also in agreement with the experimental observations, a distinctive feature of our approach is the existence of an inflection point in the log-log plots of the conductance vs temperature, at gate voltages corresponding to peaks in the oscillation of the exponent. Moreover, we evaluate the effects of a transverse magnetic field on the transport properties of the multi-walled nanotubes. For fields of the order of 4 T, we find changes in the band structure that may be already significant for the outer shells, leading to an appreciable variation in the power-law behavior of the conductance. We then foresee the appearance of sensible modulations in the exponent of the conductance for higher magnetic fields, as the different subbands are shifted towards the development of flat Landau levels.

"Root" Action for N=4 Supersymmetric Mechanics Theories

We propose to consider the N=4,d=1 supermultiplet with $% (4,4,0) component content as a ``root'' one. We elaborate a new reduction scheme from the ``root'' multiplet to supermultiplets with a smaller number of physical bosons. Starting from the most general sigma-model type action for the ``root'' multiplet, we explicitly demonstrate that the actions for the rest of linear and nonlinear N=4 supermultiplets can be easily obtained by reduction. Within the proposed reduction scheme there is a natural possibility to introduce Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. In the reduced systems, such terms give rise to potential terms, and in some cases also to terms describing the interaction with a magnetic field. We demonstrate that known N=4 superconformal actions, together with their possible interactions, appear as results of the reduction from a free action for the ``root'' supermultiplet. As a byproduct, we also construct an N=4 supersymmetric action for the linear (3,4,1) supermultiplet, containing both an interaction with a Dirac monopole and a harmonic oscillator-type potential, generalized for arbitrary conformally flat metrics.

Transport through a double barrier for interacting quasi one-dimensional electrons in a Quantum Wire in the presence of a transverse magnetic field

We discuss the Luttinger Liquid behaviour of a semiconducting Quantum Wire. We show that the measured value of the bulk critical exponent, $α_{bulk}$, for the tunneling density of states can be easily calculated. Then, the problem of the transport through a Quantum Dot formed by two Quantum Point Contacts along the Quantum Wire, weakly coupled to spinless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is studied, including the action of a strong transverse magnetic field $B$. The known magnetic dependent peaks of the conductance, $G(B)$, in the ballistic regime at a very low temperature, $T$, have to be reflected also in the transport at higher $T$ and in different regimes. The temperature dependence of the maximum $G_{max}$ of the conductance peak, according to the Correlated Sequential Tunneling theory, yields the power law $G_{max}\propto T^{2α_{end}-1}$, with the critical exponent, $α_{end}$, strongly reduced by $B$. This behaviour suggests the use of a similar device as a magnetic field modulated transistor.

N=8 Nonlinear Supersymmetric Mechanics

We construct a new two-dimensional N=8 supersymmetric mechanics with nonlinear chiral supermultiplet. Being intrinsically nonlinear this multiplet describes 2 physical bosonic and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom. We construct the most general superfield action of the sigma-model type and propose its simplest extension by a Fayet-Iliopoulos term. The most interesting property of the constructed system is a new type of geometry in the bosonic subsector, which is different from the special Kahler one characterizing the case of the linear chiral N=8 supermultiplet.

Magnetic field effects and renormalization of the long-range Coulomb interaction in Carbon Nanotubes

We develop two theoretical approaches for dealing with the low-energy effects of the repulsive interaction in one-dimensional electron systems. Renormalization Group methods allow us to study the low-energy behavior of the unscreened interaction between currents of well-defined chirality in a strictly one-dimensional electron system. A dimensional regularization approach is useful, when dealing with the low-energy effects of the long-range Coulomb interaction. This method allows us to avoid the infrared singularities arising from the long-range Coulomb interaction at $D = 1$. We can also compare these approaches with the Luttinger model, in order to analyze the effects of the short range term in the interaction. Thanks to these methods, we are able to discuss the effects of a strong magnetic field $B$ in quasi one-dimensional electron systems, by focusing our attention on Carbon Nanotubes. Our results imply a variation with $B$ in the value of the critical exponent $α$ for the tunneling density of states, which is in fair agreement with that observed in a recent transport experiment involving carbon nanotubes. The dimensional regularization allows us to predict the disappearance of the Luttinger liquid, when the magnetic field increases, with the formation of a chiral liquid with $α=0$.

Spin-orbit coupling in a Quantum Dot at high magnetic field

We describe the simultaneous effects of the spin-orbit (SO) perturbation and a magnetic field $B$ on a disk shaped quantum dot (QD). {As it is known the} combination of electrostatic forces among the $N$ electrons confined in the QD and the Pauli principle can induce a spin polarization when $B$ (applied in the direction orthogonal to the QD) is above a threshold value. In the presence of an electric field parallel to $B$, coupled to the spin $ S $ by a Rashba term, we demonstrate that a symmetry breaking takes place: we can observe it by analyzing the splitting of the levels belonging to an unperturbed multiplet. We also discuss the competitive effects of the magnetic field, the SO perturbation and the electron electron interaction, in order to define the hierarchy of the states belonging to a multiplet. We demonstrate how this hierarchy depends on the QD's size. We show the spin texture due to the combined effects of the Rashba effect and the interaction responsible for the polarization.

Non-planar spin bits beyond two loops

We study higher-loop orders of spin bit models underlying the non-planar dynamics of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM gauge theory. In particular, we derive a ''tower'' of non-planar identities involving products of site permutation operators. Such identities are then applied in the formulation of planarly consistent, testable conjectures for the full non-planar, higher-loop Hamiltonian of the $su(2)$ spin-chain.

Superstring sigma models from spin chains: the SU(1,1|1) case

We derive the coherent state representation of the integrable spin chain Hamiltonian with non-compact supersymmetry group G=SU(1,1|1). By passing to the continuous limit, we find a spin chain sigma model describing a string moving on the supercoset G/H, H being the stabilizer group. The action is written in a manifestly G-invariant form in terms of the Cartan forms and the string coordinates in the supercoset. The spin chain sigma model is shown to agree with that following from the Green-Schwarz action describing two-charged string spinning on AdS_5 x S^5.

Coherent Bremsstrahlung in Imperfect Periodic Atomic Structures

Coherent bremsstrahlung of high energy electrons moving in a three-dimensional imperfect periodic lattice consisting of a complicated system of atoms is considered. On the basis of the normalized probability density function of the distribution of atomic centers in the fundamental cell the relations describing coherent and incoherent contributions into cross sections are obtained. In particular, the cross section of coherent bremsstrahlung in complex polyatomic single crystals is found. The peculiarities of formation and possibilities of utilization of coherent processes are discussed.

Magnetic field effects on low dimensional electron systems: Luttinger liquid behaviour in a Quantum Wire

We discuss the effects of a strong magnetic field in Quantum Wires. We show how the presence of a magnetic field modifies the role played by % which %coefficients corresponding to electron electron interaction % and the Fermi velocity producing a strong reduction of the backward scattering corresponding to the Coulomb repulsion. We discuss the consequences of this and other effects of magnetic field on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and especially on their power-law behaviour in all correlation functions. The focal point is the rescaling of all the repulsive terms of the interaction between electrons with opposite momenta, due to the edge localization of the electrons and to the reduction of the length scale. Because of the same two reasons there are some interesting effects of the magnetic field concerning the backward scattering due to the presence of one impurity and the corresponding conductance. As an effect of the magnetic field we find also a spin polarization induced by a combination of electrostatic forces and the Pauli principle, quite similar to the one observed in large Quntum Dots.

N=4 supersymmetric mechanics with nonlinear chiral supermultiplet

We construct N=4 supersymmetric mechanics using the N=4 nonlinear chiral supermultiplet. The two bosonic degrees of freedom of this supermultiplet parameterize the sphere S(2) and go into the bosonic components of the standard chiral multiplet when the radius of the sphere goes to infinity. We construct the most general action and demonstrate that the nonlinearity of the supermultiplet results in the deformation of the connection, which couples the fermionic degrees of freedom with the background, and of the bosonic potential. Also a non-zero magnetic field could appear in the system.

Two-dimensional N=8 supersymmetric mechanics in superspace

We construct a two-dimensional N=8 supersymmetric quantum mechanics which inherits the most interesting properties of N=2, $d=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. After dimensional reduction to one dimension in terms of field-strength, we show that only complex scalar fields from the $N=2, d=4$ vector multiplet become physical bosons in $d=1$. The rest of the bosonic components are reduced to auxiliary fields, thus giving rise to the {\bf (2, 8, 6)} supermultiplet in $d=1$. We construct the most general superfields action for this supermultiplet and demonstrate that it possesses duality symmetry extended to the fermionic sector of theory. We also explicitly present the Dirac brackets for the canonical variables and construct the supercharges and Hamiltonian which form a N=8 super Poincarè algebra with central charges. Finally, we discuss the duality transformations which relate the {\bf (2, 8, 6)} supermultiplet with the {\bf (4, 8, 4)} one.

Studies of Nanotube Channeling for Efficient Beam Scraping at Accelerators

While particle beam steering (and in particular, "scraping") in accelerators by bent channeling crystals is an established technique extensively tested at IHEP Protvino and other major high-energy labs, an interesting question is how one could improve channeling capabilities by applying modern nanotechnology. Theoretical research of nanotube channeling was in progress over recent years. In this work, we assess potential benefits from nanotube channeling for real accelerator systems. We report simulation studies of channeling in nanostructured material (carbon SWNT and MWNT) tested for possible serving as a primary scraper for the collimation systems of hadron colliders. The advantages of nanostructured material as a potential choice for a primary scraper in a high-energy accelerator such as LHC or the Tevatron are discussed in comparison to crystal lattices and amorphous material. We evaluate physical processes relevant to this application and reveal nanotechnology requirements.
