Search for the optical counterpart of the GW170814 gravitationalwave event with the VLT Survey Telescope

We report on the search for the optical counterpart of the gravitational event GW170814, which was carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) by the GRAvitational Wave Inaf TeAm (GRAWITA). Observations started 17.5 hours after the LIGO/Virgo alert and we covered an area of 99 deg$^2$ that encloses $\sim 77\%$ and $\sim 59\%$ of the initial and refined localization probability regions, respectively. A total of six epochs were secured over nearly two months. The survey reached an average limiting magnitude of 22 AB mag in the $r-$band. After assuming the model described in Perna et al. 2019 that derives as possible optical counterpart of a BBH event a transient source declining in about one day, we have computed a survey efficiency of about $5\%$. This paper describes the VST observational strategy and the results obtained by our analysis pipelines developed to search for optical transients in multi-epoch images. We report the catalogue of the candidates with possible identifications based on light-curve fitting. We have identified two dozens of SNe, nine AGNs, one QSO. Nineteen transients characterized by a single detection were not classified. We have restricted our analysis only to the candidates that fall into the refined localization map. None out of 39 left candidates could be positively associated with GW170814. This result implies that the possible emission of optical radiation from a BBH merger had to be fainter than r $\sim$ 22 ($L_{optical}$ $\sim$ $1.4 \times 10^{42}$ erg/s) on a time interval ranging from a few hours up to two months after the GW event.

The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da: Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell

In this paper we report the results of the first $\sim$four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy $\gtrsim10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be $\simeq8\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star $\simeq0.6\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,\rm{yr^{-1}}$, suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a flux excess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass $\gtrsim0.4\times10^{-3}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ for the dust.

The Most Rapidly Declining Type I Supernova 2019bkc/ATLAS19dqr

We report observations of the hydrogen-deficient supernova (SN) 2019bkc/ATLAS19dqr. With B- and r-band decline between peak and 10 days post peak of Delta m_10(B)=5.24+/-0.07 mag and Delta m_10(r)=3.85+/-0.10$ mag, respectively, SN 2019bkc is the most rapidly declining SN I discovered so far. While its closest matches are the rapidly declining SN 2005ek and SN 2010X, the light curves and spectra of SN 2019bkc show some unprecedented characteristics. SN 2019bkc appears "hostless," with no identifiable host galaxy near its location, although it may be associated with the galaxy cluster MKW1 at z = 0.02. We evaluate a number of existing models of fast-evolving SNe, and we find that none of them can satisfactorily explain all aspects of SN 2019bkc observations.

A comparison between short GRB afterglows and AT2017gfo: shedding light on kilonovae properties

Multi-messenger astronomy received a great boost following the discovery of kilonova AT2017gfo, the optical counterpart of the gravitational wave source GW170817 associated with the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A. AT2017gfo was the first kilonova that could be extensively monitored in time both photometrically and spectroscopically. Previously, only few candidates have been observed against the glare of short GRB afterglows. In this work, we aim to search the fingerprints of AT2017gfo-like kilonova emissions in the optical/NIR light curves of 39 short GRBs with known redshift. For the first time, our results allow us to study separately the range of luminosity of the blue and red components of AT2017gfo-like kilonovae in short GRBs. In particular, the red component is similar in luminosity to AT2017gfo, while the blue kilonova can be more than 10 times brighter. Finally, we find further evidence to support all the claimed kilonova detections and we exclude an AT2017gfo-like kilonova in GRBs 050509B and 061201.

The transitional gap transient AT 2018hso: new insights on the luminous red nova phenomenon

Aims: AT 2018hso is a new transient showing transitional properties between those of LRNe and the class of intermediate luminosity red transients (ILRTs) similar to SN 2008S. Through the detailed analysis of the observed parameters, our study support that it actually belongs to the LRN class, and was likely produced by the coalescence of two massive stars. Methods: We obtained ten months of optical and near-infrared photometric monitoring, and eleven epochs of low-resolution optical spectroscopy of AT~2018hso. We compared its observed properties with those of other ILRTs and LRNe. We also inspected the archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images obtained about 15 years ago to constrain the progenitor's properties. Results: The light curves of AT 2018hso show a first sharp peak (Mr = -13.93 mag), followed by a broader and shallower second peak, that resembles a plateau in the optical bands. The spectra dramatically change with time. Early time spectra show prominent Balmer emission lines and a weak Ca II] doublet, which is usually observed in ILRTs. However, the major decrease in the continuum temperature, the appearance of narrow metal absorption lines, the major change in the H$α$ strength and profile, and the emergence of molecular bands support a LRN classification. The possible detection of an I ~ -8 mag source at the position of AT 2018hso in HST archive images is consistent with expectations for a pre-merger massive binary, similar to the precursor of the 2015 LRN in M101. Conclusions: We provide reasonable arguments to support a LRN classification for AT~2018hso. This study reveals growing heterogeneity in the observables of LRNe than thought in the past, making sometimes tricky the discrimination between LRNe and ILRTs. This suggests the need of monitoring the entire evolution of gap transients to avoid misclassifications.

Luminous Red Novae: Stellar Mergers or Giant Eruptions?

We present extensive datasets for a class of intermediate-luminosity optical transients known as "luminous red novae" (LRNe). They show double-peaked light curves, with an initial rapid luminosity rise to a blue peak (at -13 to -15 mag), which is followed by a longer-duration red peak that sometimes is attenuated, resembling a plateau. The progenitors of three of them (NGC4490-2011OT1, M101-2015OT1, and SNhunt248), likely relatively massive blue to yellow stars, were also observed in a pre-eruptive stage when their luminosity was slowly increasing. Early spectra obtained during the first peak show a blue continuum with superposed prominent narrow Balmer lines, with P Cygni profiles. Lines of Fe II are also clearly observed, mostly in emission. During the second peak, the spectral continuum becomes much redder, Halpha is barely detected, and a forest of narrow metal lines is observed in absorption. Very late-time spectra (~6 months after blue peak) show an extremely red spectral continuum, peaking in the infrared (IR) domain. Halpha is detected in pure emission at such late phases, along with broad absorption bands due to molecular overtones (such as TiO, VO). We discuss a few alternative scenarios for LRNe. Although major instabilities of single massive stars cannot be definitely ruled out, we favour a common envelope ejection in a close binary system, with possibly a final coalescence of the two stars. The similarity between LRNe and the outburst observed a few months before the explosion of the Type IIn SN 2011ht is also discussed.

Optical follow-up of the tidal disruption event iPTF16fnl: new insights from X-shooter observations

We present the results from Nordic Optical Telescope and X-shooter follow-up campaigns of the tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF16fnl, covering the first $\sim$100 days after the transient discovery. We followed the source photometrically until the TDE emission was no longer detected above the host galaxy light. The bolometric luminosity evolution of the TDE is consistent with an exponential decay with e-folding constant t$_{0}$=17.6$\pm$0.2 days. The early time spectra of the transient are dominated by broad He II $λ$4686, H$β$, H$α$ and N III $λ$4100 emission lines. The latter is known to be produced together with the N III $λ$4640 in the Bowen fluorescence mechanism. Thanks to the medium resolution X-shooter spectra we have been able to separate the Bowen blend contribution from the broad He II emission line. The detection of the Bowen fluorescence lines in iPTF16fnl place this transient among the N-rich TDE subset. In the late-time X-shooter spectra, narrow emission lines of [O III] and [N II] originating from the host galaxy are detected, suggesting that the host galaxy harbours a weak AGN in its core. The properties of all broad emission lines evolve with time. The equivalent widths follow an exponential decay compatible with the bolometric luminosity evolution. The full-width a half maximum of the broad lines decline with time and the line profiles develop a narrow core at later epochs. Overall, the optical emission of iPTF16fnl can be explained by being produced in an optically thick region in which high densities favour the Bowen fluorescence mechanism and where multiple electron scatterings are responsible for the line broadening.

SN 2016coi (ASASSN-16fp): an energetic H-stripped core-collapse supernova from a massive stellar progenitor with large mass loss

We present comprehensive observations and analysis of the energetic H-stripped SN 2016coi (a.k.a. ASASSN-16fp), spanning the $γ$-ray through optical and radio wavelengths, acquired within the first hours to $\sim$420 days post explosion. Our campaign confirms the identification of He in the SN ejecta, which we interpret to be caused by a larger mixing of Ni into the outer ejecta layers. From the modeling of the broad bolometric light curve we derive a large ejecta mass to kinetic energy ratio ($M_{\rm{ej}}\sim 4-7\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, $E_{\rm{k}}\sim 7-8\times 10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$). The small [\ion{Ca}{ii}] \lam\lam7291,7324 to [\ion{O}{i}] \lam\lam6300,6364 ratio ($\sim$0.2) observed in our late-time optical spectra is suggestive of a large progenitor core mass at the time of collapse. We find that SN 2016coi is a luminous source of X-rays ($L_{X}>10^{39}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ in the first $\sim100$ days post explosion) and radio emission ($L_{8.5\,GHz}\sim7\times 10^{27}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}Hz^{-1}}$ at peak). These values are in line with those of relativistic SNe (2009bb, 2012ap). However, for SN 2016coi we infer substantial pre-explosion progenitor mass-loss with rate $\dot M \sim (1-2)\times 10^{-4}\,\rm{M_{\odot}yr^{-1}}$ and a sub-relativistic shock velocity $v_{sh}\sim0.15c$, in stark contrast with relativistic SNe and similar to normal SNe. Finally, we find no evidence for a SN-associated shock breakout $γ$-ray pulse with energy $E_γ>2\times 10^{46}\,\rm{erg}$. While we cannot exclude the presence of a companion in a binary system, taken together, our findings are consistent with a massive single star progenitor that experienced large mass loss in the years leading up to core-collapse, but was unable to achieve complete stripping of its outer layers before explosion.

SN 2017gmr: An energetic Type II-P supernova with asymmetries

We present high-cadence ultraviolet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) data on the luminous Type II-P supernova SN 2017gmr from hours after discovery through the first 180 days. SN 2017gmr does not show signs of narrow, high-ionization emission lines in the early optical spectra, yet the optical lightcurve evolution suggests that an extra energy source from circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction must be present for at least 2 days after explosion. Modeling of the early lightcurve indicates a ~500R$_{\odot}$ progenitor radius, consistent with a rather compact red supergiant, and late-time luminosities indicate up to 0.130 $\pm$ 0.026 M$_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni are present, if the lightcurve is solely powered by radioactive decay, although the $^{56}$Ni mass may be lower if CSM interaction contributes to the post-plateau luminosity. Prominent multi-peaked emission lines of H$α$ and [O I] emerge after day 154, as a result of either an asymmetric explosion or asymmetries in the CSM. The lack of narrow lines within the first two days of explosion in the likely presence of CSM interaction may be an example of close, dense, asymmetric CSM that is quickly enveloped by the spherical supernova ejecta.

The Evolution of Luminous Red Nova AT 2017jfs in NGC 4470

We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the intermediate-luminosity optical transient AT 2017jfs. At peak, the object reaches an absolute magnitude of Mg=-15.46+-0.15 mag and a bolometric luminosity of 5.5x10^41 erg/s. Its light curve has the double-peak shape typical of Luminous Red Novae (LRNe), with a narrow first peak bright in the blue bands, while the second peak is longer lasting and more luminous in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. During the first peak, the spectrum shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines of H and Fe II. During the second peak, the spectrum becomes cooler, resembling that of a K-type star, and the emission lines are replaced by a forest of narrow lines in absorption. About 5 months later, while the optical light curves are characterized by a fast linear decline, the NIR ones show a moderate rebrightening, observed until the transient disappeared in solar conjunction. At these late epochs, the spectrum becomes reminiscent of that of M-type stars, with prominent molecular absorption bands. The late-time properties suggest the formation of some dust in the expanding common envelope or an IR echo from foreground pre-existing dust. We propose that the object is a common-envelope transient, possibly the outcome of a merging event in a massive binary, similar to NGC4490-2011OT1.

SN 2016B a.k.a ASASSN-16ab: a transitional type II supernova

We present photometry, polarimetry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-16ab/SN 2016B in PGC 037392. The photometric and spectroscopic follow-up commenced about two weeks after shock breakout and continued until nearly six months. The light curve of SN 2016B exhibits intermediate properties between those of Type IIP and IIL. The early decline is steep (1.68 $\pm$ 0.10 mag 100 d$^{-1}$), followed by a shallower plateau phase (0.47 $\pm$ 0.24 mag 100 d$^{-1}$). The optically thick phase lasts for 118 d, similar to Type IIP. The $^{56}$Ni mass estimated from the radioactive tail of the bolometric light curve is 0.082 $\pm$ 0.019 M$_\odot$. High velocity component contributing to the absorption trough of H$α$ and H$β$ in the photospheric spectra are identified from the spectral modelling from about 57 - 97 d after the outburst, suggesting a possible SN ejecta and circumstellar material interaction. Such high velocity features are common in the spectra of Type IIL supernovae. By modelling the true bolometric light curve of SN 2016B, we estimated a total ejected mass of $\sim$15 M$_\odot$, kinetic energy of $\sim$1.4 foe and an initial radius of $\sim$400 R$_\odot$.

Progenitor candidate for the type II-P supernova SN 2018aoq in NGC 4151

We present our findings based on pre- and post-explosion data of the type II-Plateau SN 2018aoq that exploded in NGC 4151. As distance estimates to NGC 4151 vary by an order of magnitude, we utilised the well-known correlation between ejecta velocity and plateau brightness, i.e. the standard candle method, to obtain a distance of 18.2$\pm$1.2 Mpc, which is in very good agreement with measurements based on geometric methods. The above distance implies a mid-plateau absolute magnitude of $M_{V}^{50}=-15.76\pm$0.14 suggesting that it is of intermediate brightness when compared to IIP SNe such as SN 2005cs at the faint end, and more typical events such as SN 1999em. This is further supported by relatively low expansion velocities (Fe II $λ$5169 $\sim$3000 km s$^{-1}$ at +42 d). Using archival HST/WFC3 imaging data, we find a point source coincident with the supernova position in the F350LP, F555W, F814W, and F160W filters. This source shows no significant variability over the $\sim$2 month time span of the data. From fits to the spectral energy distribution of the candidate progenitor, we find $\log\left(L/L_\odot\right)\sim 4.7$ and $T_{\mathrm{eff}}\sim 3.5$ kK, implying an M-type red supergiant progenitor. From comparisons to single and binary star models, we find that both favour the explosion of a star with a zero-age main sequence mass of $\sim$$10 M_\odot$.

SN 2017ens: The Metamorphosis of a Luminous Broad-lined Type Ic Supernova into an SN IIn

We present observations of supernova (SN) 2017ens, discovered by the ATLAS survey and identified as a hot blue object through the GREAT program. The redshift z=0.1086 implies a peak brightness of M_g=-21.1 mag, placing the object within the regime of superluminous supernovae. We observe a dramatic spectral evolution, from initially being blue and featureless, to later developing features similar to those of the broadlined Type Ic SN 1998bw, and finally showing ~2000 km s^-1 wide H-alpha and H-beta emission. Relatively narrow Balmer emission (reminiscent of a SN IIn) is present at all times. We also detect coronal lines, indicative of a dense circumstellar medium. We constrain the progenitor wind velocity to ~50-60 km s^-1 based on P-Cygni profiles, which is far slower than those present in Wolf-Rayet stars. This may suggest that the progenitor passed through a luminous blue variable phase, or that the wind is instead from a binary companion red supergiant star. At late times we see the ~2000 km s^-1 wide H-alpha emission persisting at high luminosity (~3x10^40 erg s^-1) for at least 100 day, perhaps indicative of additional mass loss at high velocities that could have been ejected by a pulsational pair instability.

SN 2014J in M82: New Insights On the Spectral Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae

We present extensive spectroscopic observations for one of the closest type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), SN 2014J discovered in M82, ranging from 10.4 days before to 473.2 days after B-band maximum light. The diffuse interstellar band (DIB) features detected in a high-resolution spectrum allow an estimate of line-of-sight extinction as Av=1.9+/-0.6 mag. Spectroscopically, SN 2014J can be put into the high-velocity (HV) subgroup in Wang's classification with a velocity of Si~II 6355 at maximum light as about 12200 km/s, but has a low velocity gradient (LVG, following Benetti's classification) as 41+/-2 km/s/day, which is inconsistent with the trend that HV SNe Ia generally have larger velocity gradients. We find that the HV SNe Ia with LVGs tend to have relatively stronger Si III (at ~4400 Angstrom) absorptions in early spectra, larger ratios of S II 5468 to S II 5640, and weaker Si II 5972 absorptions compared to their counterparts with similar velocities but high velocity gradients. This shows that the HV+LVG subgroup of SNe Ia may have intrinsically higher photospheric temperature, which indicates that their progenitors may experience more complete burning in the explosions relative to the typical HV SNe Ia.

A testing facility for AO on-sky demonstrations at the Copernico's Telescope within the ADONI framework

In the context of ADONI - the ADaptive Optics National laboratory of INAF - we are arranging for a facility, accessible to the AO community, in which visiting multi-purpose instrumentation, e.g. systems and prototypes of innovative AO concepts, may be directly tested on sky. The facility is located at the 182cm Copernico telescope in Asiago, the largest telescope in Italy, at its Coude focus, for which refurbishment activities are carried out, given that this focus was initially foreseen in the design, but never implemented and used till today. The facility hosts a laboratory where specialized visiting AO instrumentation may be properly accommodated on an optical bench for on-sky demonstrations. We present the current status of the facility, describing the opto-mechanical design implemented at the telescope that allows to redirect the light toward the Coude focus, the tests on the opto-mechanics carried on for stability verification, the integration of the optical and mechanical components within the preexisting structure.

AT 2017be - a new member of the class of Intermediate-Luminosity Red Transients

We report the results of our spectrophotometric monitoring campaign for AT~2017be in NGC~2537. Its lightcurve reveals a fast rise to an optical maximum, followed by a plateau lasting about 30 days, and finally a fast decline. Its absolute peak magnitude ($M_{r}$ $\simeq$ $-$12 $\rm{mag}$) is fainter than that of core-collapse supernovae, and is consistent with those of supernova impostors and other Intermediate-Luminosity Optical Transients. The quasi-bolometric lightcurve peaks at $\sim$ 2 $\times$ 10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and the late-time photometry allows us to constrain an ejected $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim$ 8 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$\msun. The spectra of AT~2017be show minor evolution over the observational period, a relatively blue continuum showing at early phases, which becomes redder with time. A prominent H$α$ emission line always dominates over other Balmer lines. Weak Fe {\sc ii} features, Ca~{\sc ii} H$\&$K and the Ca {\sc ii} NIR triplet are also visible, while P-Cygni absorption troughs are found in a high resolution spectrum. In addition, the [Ca~{\sc ii}] $λ$7291,7324 doublet is visible in all spectra. This feature is typical of Intermediate-Luminosity Red Transients (ILRTs), similar to SN~2008S. The relatively shallow archival Spitzer data are not particularly constraining. On the other hand, a non-detection in deeper near-infrared HST images disfavours a massive Luminous Blue Variable eruption as the origin for AT~2017be. As has been suggested for other ILRTs, we propose that AT~2017be is a candidate for a weak electron-capture supernova explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star, still embedded in a thick dusty envelope.

Unveiling the enigma of ATLAS17aeu

Aim. The unusual transient ATLAS17aeu was serendipitously detected within the sky localisation of the gravitational wave trigger GW170104. The importance of a possible association with gravitational waves coming from a binary black hole merger led to an extensive follow-up campaign, with the aim of assessing a possible connection with GW170104. Methods. With several telescopes, we carried out both photometric and spectroscopic observations of ATLAS17aeu, for several epochs, between $\sim 3$ and $\sim 230$ days after the first detection. Results. We studied in detail the temporal and spectroscopic properties of ATLAS17aeu and its host galaxy. We detected spectral features similar to those of a broad lined supernova superposed to an otherwise typical long-GRB afterglow. Based on analysis of the optical light curve, spectrum and host galaxy SED, we conclude that the redshift of the source is probably $z \simeq 0.5 \pm 0.2$. Conclusions. While the redshift range we have determined is marginally compatible with that of the gravitational wave event, the presence of a supernova component and the consistency of this transient with the E$_{\rm p}$-E$_{\rm iso}$ correlation support the conclusion that ATLAS17aeu was associated with the long gamma-ray burst GRB170105A. This rules out the association of the GRB170105A/ATLAS17aeu transient with the gravitational wave event GW170104, which was due to a binary black hole merger.

SN 2015ba: A type IIP supernova with a long plateau

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy from about a week after explosion to $\sim$272 d of an atypical Type IIP supernova, SN 2015ba, which exploded in the edge-on galaxy IC 1029. SN 2015ba is a luminous event with an absolute V-band magnitude of -17.1$\pm$0.2 mag at 50 d since explosion and has a long plateau lasting for $\sim$123 d. The distance to the SN is estimated to be 34.8$\pm$0.7 Mpc using the expanding photosphere and standard candle methods. High-velocity H-Balmer components constant with time are observed in the late-plateau phase spectra of SN 2015ba, which suggests a possible role of circumstellar interaction at these phases. Both hydrodynamical and analytical modelling suggest a massive progenitor of SN 2015ba with a pre-explosion mass of 24-26 M$_\odot$. However, the nebular spectra of SN 2015ba exhibit insignificant levels of oxygen, which is otherwise expected from a massive progenitor. This might be suggestive of the non-monotonical link between O-core masses and the zero-age main-sequence mass of pre-supernova stars and/or uncertainties in the mixing scenario in the ejecta of supernovae.
