Crystal growth, characterization and electronic band structure of TiSeS

Layered semimetallic van der Waals materials TiSe2 has attracted a lot of attention because of interplay of a charge density wave (CDW) state and superconductivity. Its sister compound TiS2, being isovalent to TiSe2 and having the same crystal structure, shows a semiconducting behavior. The natural rises what happens at the transition point in TiSe2-xSx, which is expected for x close to 1. Here we report the growth and characterization of TiSeS single crystals and the study of the electronic structure using density functional theory (DFT) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). We show that TiSeS single crystals have the same morphology as TiSe2. Transport measurements reveal a metallic state, no evidence of CDW was found. DFT calculations suggest that the electronic band structure in TiSeS is similar to that of TiSe2, but the electron and hole pockets in TiSeS are much smaller. The ARPES results are in good agreement with the calculations.

Mass enhancements and band shifts in strongly hole overdoped Fe-based pnictide superconductors: KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CsFe$_2$As$_2$

The interplay of high and low-energy mass renormalizations with band-shifts reflected by the positions of van Hove singularities (VHS) in the normal state spectra of the highest hole-overdoped and strongly correlated AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A122) with A = K, Cs is discussed phenomenologically based on ARPES data and GGA band-structure calculations with full spin-orbit coupling. The big increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ from K122 to Cs122 is ascribed to an enhanced coupling to low-energy bosons in the vicinity of a quantum critical point to an unknown, yet incommensurate phase different from the commensurate Mott one. We find no sizeable increase in correlations for Cs122 in contrast to F. Eilers et al., PRL v. 116, 237003 (2016) [3]. The empirical (ARPES) VHS positions as compared with GGA-predictions point even to slightly weaker correlations in Cs122 in accord with low-$T$ magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data and a decreasing Wilson ratio $\propto χ(0)/γ$.

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ single crystals

We present a detailed study of the phase diagram of copper intercalated TiSe$_2$ single crystals, combining local Hall-probe magnetometry, tunnel diode oscillator technique (TDO), specific-heat, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. A series of the Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ samples from three different sources with various copper content $x$ and superconducting critical temperatures $T_c$ have been investigated. We first show that the vortex penetration mechanism is dominated by geometrical barriers enabling a precise determination of the lower critical field, $H_{c1}$. We then show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density deduced from magnetic measurements (both $H_{c1}$ and TDO techniques) clearly suggests the existence of a small energy gap in the system, with a coupling strength $2Δ_s \sim [2.4-2.8]k_BT_c$, regardless of the copper content, in puzzling contradiction with specific heat measurements which can be well described by one single large gap $2Δ_l \sim [3.7-3.9]k_BT_c$. Finally, our measurements reveal a non-trivial doping dependence of the condensation energy, which remains to be understood.

Non-Fermi-liquid scattering rates and anomalous band dispersion in ferropnictides

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the band dispersion and the quasiparticle scattering rates in two ferropnictides systems. Our ARPES results show linear-in-energy dependent scattering rates which are constant in a wide range of control parameter and which depend on the orbital character of the bands. We demonstrate that the linear energy dependence gives rise to weakly dispersing band with a strong mass enhancement when the band maximum crosses the chemical potential. In the superconducting phase the related small effective Fermi energy favors a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)\,\cite{Bardeen1957}-Bose-Einstein (BE)\,\cite{Bose1924} crossover state.

Relation between the one-particle spectral function and dynamic spin susceptibility in superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) provides a detailed view of the renormalized band structure and, consequently, is a key to the self-energy and the single-particle Green's function. Here we summarize the ARPES data accumulated over the whole Brillouin zone for the optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$ into a parametric model of the Green's function, which we use for calculating the itinerant component of the dynamic spin susceptibility in absolute units with many-body effects taken into account. By comparison with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data we show that the itinerant component of the spin response can account for the integral intensity of the experimental INS spectrum. Taking into account the bi-layer splitting, we explain the magnetic resonances in the acoustic (odd) and optic (even) INS channels.
