Energy-time entanglement from a resonantly driven quantum dot three-level system

Entanglement is a major resource in advanced quantum technology, where it can enable secure exchange of information over large distances. Energy-time entanglement is particularly attractive for its beneficial robustness in fiber-based quantum communication and can be demonstrated in the Franson interferometer. We report on Franson-type interference from a resonantly driven biexciton cascade under continuous wave excitation. Our measurements yield a maximum visibility of (73 $\pm$ 2)% surpassing the limit of violation of Bell's inequality (70.7%) by more than one standard deviation. Despite being unable to satisfy a loophole free violation, our work demonstrates promising results concerning future works on such a system. Furthermore, our systematical studies on the impact of driving strength indicate that dephasing mechanisms and deviations from the cascaded emission have major impact on the degree of the measured energy-time entanglement.

Phonon-assisted robust and deterministic two-photon biexciton preparation in a quantum dot

We investigate both experimentally and theoretically a simple yet more robust and flexible alternative to Rabi oscillation-type biexciton preparation protocols traditionally used for semiconductor quantum dots. The quantum dot is excited by a strong laser pulse positively detuned from the two-photon resonance yielding an on demand initialization of the biexciton state by making use of the phonon-induced thermalization of the photon dressed states. It is shown that for excitation pulses in the picosecond range, a stable and high fidelity of up to $f_{XX}=0.98\pm 0.01$ is reached. Notably, the generated photons show similar coherence properties as measured in the resonant two-photon scheme. This protocol is a powerful tool for the control of complex solid state systems combining radiative cascades, entanglement and resonant cavity modes.

Exciton-phonon coupling efficiency in CdSe quantum dots embedded in ZnSe nanowires

Exciton luminescence of a CdSe quantum dot (QD) inserted in a ZnSe nanowire is strongly influenced by the dark exciton states. Because of the small size of these QDs (2-5nm), exchange interaction between hole and electron is highly enhanced and we measured large energy splitting between bright and dark exciton states ($ΔE\in [4, 9.2 ]$ meV) and large spin flip rates between these states. Statistics on many QDs showed that this splitting depends on the QD size. Moreover, we measured an increase of the spin flip rate to the dark states with increasing energy splitting. We explain this observation with a model taking into account the fact that the exciton-phonon interaction depends on the bright to dark exciton energy splitting as well as on the size and shape of the exciton wave function. It also has consequences on the exciton line intensity at high temperature.

Subnanosecond spectral diffusion of a single quantum dot in a nanowire

We have studied spectral diffusion of the photoluminescence of a single CdSe quantum dot inserted in a ZnSe nanowire. We have measured the characteristic diffusion time as a function of pumping power and temperature using a recently developed technique [G. Sallen et al, Nature Photon. \textbf{4}, 696 (2010)] that offers subnanosecond resolution. These data are consistent with a model where only a \emph{single} carrier wanders around in traps located in the vicinity of the quantum dot.
