Phase diagram of 3D SU(3) gauge-adjoint Higgs system and C- violation in hot QCD

Thermally reduced QCD leads to three dimensional SU(3) gaugefields coupled to an adjoint scalar field $A_0$. We compute the effective potential in the one-loop approximation and evaluate the VEV's of $TrA_0^2$ and $TrA_0^3$. In the Higgs phase not only the former, but also the latter has a VEV. This happens where the SU(3) gauge symmetry is broken minimally with U(2) still unbroken. The VEV of the cubic invariant breaks charge conjugation and CP. It is plausible that in the Higgs phase one has a transition for large enough Higgs selfcoupling to a region where $TrA_0^3$ has no VEV and where the gaugesymmetry is broken maximally to $U(1)\times U(1)$. For a number of colours larger than 3 an even richer phase structure is possible.

Debye mass from domainwalls and dimensionally reduced phase diagram

To measure the Debye mass in dimensionally reduced QCD for $N_c\le 3$ we replace in the correlator of two Polyakov loops one of the loops by a wall triggered by a dimensionally reduced twist. The phase diagram for $N_c=3$ has R-parity broken in part of the Higgs phase.

Thermal Gauge Theory, Effective Action and Z(N) Symmetry

One of the salient features of high temperature gluodynamics is the Z(N) groundstate degeneracy, key to the understanding of the transition. On the other hand impressive progress has been obtained with effective theories, that seemingly lack Z(N) symmetry. We give a simple unified desciption of the two. As a very useful byproduct we get a natural infrared regulator and show its expediency by calculating the next to leading order in the Debye mass. Higher order corrections to bulk free energy and domainwall surface tension are discussed.

Wilson line in high temperature particle physics

The physics of the Wilson line leads to new developments in high temperature particle physics. The main tool is the effective action for a given fixed value of the phase of the Wilson line. It furnishes a gauge invariant infrared cut off, and yields for small values of the phases a systematic procedure for obtaining a power series in the coupling g and glog(1/g). It breaks the centergroup symmetry of the gauge group only at high temperature so leads to domain walls disappearing at low temperatures. It shows long lived metastable states in the standard model, SU(5), SO(10) and its SUSY partners, with possibilities for CP violation and thermal inflation.

Interfaces in hot gauge theory

The string tension at low T and the free energy of domain walls at high T can be computed from one and the same observable. We show by explicit calculation that domain walls in hot Z(2) gauge theory have good thermodynamical behaviour. This is due to roughening of the wall, which expresses the restoration of translational symmetry.
