Multi-MeV electrons from above-threshold ionization of the neon K-shell

We present measurements of integrated electron energies produced by above-threshold ionization (ATI) of neon in a laser field with intensity exceeding 10$^{20}$ W/cm$^{2}$. We observe electrons with energy exceeding 10 MeV ejected in the laser forward direction above a threshold intensity of $2 \times 10^{20}$ W/cm$^{2}$. We compare to ATI models using both tunneling (ADK-PPT) and barrier suppression ionization and observe the onset of ATI at a higher threshold intensity than predicted by these models.

Above-threshold ionization at laser intensity greater than $10^{20}$ W/cm$^{2}$

We present the first experimental observation of above-threshold ionization (ATI) electrons produced by ionization of the neon K-shell in a laser field where intensity exceeds 10$^{20}$ W/cm$^{2}$. An array of plastic scintillating calorimeter detectors was used to measure the high-energy electrons at four angles in the laser forward direction. Coarse energy resolution was obtained using aluminum filters of several thicknesses to block lower-energy electrons. A threshold intensity around $2 \times 10^{20}$ W/cm$^{2}$ is observed for production of energetic ATI electrons in the laser forward direction, with maximum electron energy exceeding 10 MeV. L-shell electrons with energies < 1.4 MeV are scattered further forward along the laser direction than expected. We present comparisons of the measured total electron energies to the predictions of a Monte Carlo models employing the ADK-PPT ionization model and the Augst barrier suppression ionization model.

Explosion Dynamics of Methane Clusters Irradiated by 38 nm XUV Laser Pulses

We have studied the explosion dynamics of methane clusters irradiated by intense, femtosecond, 38 nm (32.6 eV) XUV laser pulses. The ion time-of-flight spectrum measured with a Wiley-McLaren-type time-of-flight spectrometer reveals undissociated molecular $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ ions, fragments which are missing hydrogen atoms due to the breakage of one or more C-H bonds $(\textrm{CH}_3^+, \textrm{CH}_2^+ \ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{CH}^+)$ and the recombination product $\textrm{CH}_5^+$. Also visible on the time-of-flight traces are atomic and molecular hydrogen ions $(\textrm{H}^+ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{H}_2^+)$, carbon ions, and larger hydrocarbons such as $\textrm{C}_2 \textrm{H}_2^+$ and $\textrm{C}_2\textrm{H}_3^+$. No doubly-charged parent ions $(\textrm{CH}_4^{2+})$ were detected. The time-of-flight results show that total and relative ion yields depend strongly on cluster size. The absolute yields of $\textrm{CH}^+_5$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ scale linearly with the yields of the other generated fragments up to a cluster size of $\langle\textrm{N}\rangle=70,000 \ \textrm{molecules}$, then begin to decrease, whereas the yields of the $\textrm{CH}_n^+(n=1-4) $ fragments plateau at this cluster size. The behavior of $\textrm{H}^+$ may be understood through the electron recombination rate, which depends on the electron temperature and the cluster average charge. Moreover, the $\textrm{CH}_5^+$ behavior is explained by the depletion of both $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ via electron-ion recombination in the expanding nanoplasma.

The Schrodinger equation and negative energies

We present a nonrelativistic wave equation for the electron in (3+1)-dimensions which includes negative-energy eigenstates. We solve this equation for three well-known instances, reobtaining the corresponding Pauli equation (but including negative-energy eigenstates) in each case.

How to build a non-spreading wave packet in quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics asserts that a wave packet must inevitably spread as time progresses since the dispersion relation for the quantum waves is assumed to be quadratic in the momentum k. However, this assumption does not consider the standard frequency Doppler shift formula of Galilean relativity. In this article a non-dispersive wave packet is constructed by appropriately considering the transformation rules between the laboratory and the (particle's) rest inertial reference frames.

An approximation to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting as nonlinear effective Coulomb-like interactions in the Dirac equation

The Dirac equation for the Coulomb problem is restated by incorporating a nonlinear effective interaction into the Dirac Hamiltonian: one keeps the $1/r$ dependence for the Coulomb field, but the coupling constant is modified by a factor depending on the n (principal quantum number) power of the mean value of the Hamiltonian. In this simple context we study the Lamb shift and the hyperfine splitting of the s-levels of hydrogenic atoms. We discuss to what extent the corresponding calculations fit the energy splittings to the appropriate order in the fine structure constant.
