Higher-order gravity and the cosmological background of gravitational waves

The cosmological background of gravitational waves can be tuned by the higher-order corrections to the gravitational Lagrangian. In particular, it can be shown that assuming $R^{1+ε}$, where $ε$ indicates a generic (eventually small) correction to the Hilbert-Einstein action in the Ricci scalar $R$, gives a parametric approach to control the evolution and the production mechanism of gravitational waves in the early Universe.

Space-time deformations as extended conformal transformations

A definition of space-time metric deformations on an $n$-dimensional manifold is given. We show that such deformations can be regarded as extended conformal transformations. In particular, their features can be related to the perturbation theory giving a natural picture by which gravitational waves are described by small deformations of the metric. As further result, deformations can be related to approximate Killing vectors (approximate symmetries) by which it is possible to parameterize the deformed region of a given manifold. The perspectives and some possible physical applications of such an approach are discussed.

Neutrino mixing, flavor states and dark energy

We shortly summarize the quantum field theory formalism for the neutrino mixing and report on recent results showing that the vacuum condensate induced by neutrino mixing can be interpreted as a dark energy component of the Universe.

The Newtonian Limit of F(R) gravity

A general analytic procedure is developed to deal with the Newtonian limit of $f(R)$ gravity. A discussion comparing the Newtonian and the post-Newtonian limit of these models is proposed in order to point out the differences between the two approaches. We calculate the post-Newtonian parameters of such theories without any redefinition of the degrees of freedom, in particular, without adopting some scalar fields and without any change from Jordan to Einstein frame. Considering the Taylor expansion of a generic $f(R)$ theory, it is possible to obtain general solutions in term of the metric coefficients up to the third order of approximation. In particular, the solution relative to the $g_{tt}$ component gives a gravitational potential always corrected with respect to the Newtonian one of the linear theory $f(R)=R$. Furthermore, we show that the Birkhoff theorem is not a general result for $f(R)$-gravity since time-dependent evolution for spherically symmetric solutions can be achieved depending on the order of perturbations. Finally, we discuss the post-Minkowskian limit and the emergence of massive gravitational wave solutions.

f(R) Gravity with Torsion: The Metric-Affine Approach

The role of torsion in f(R) gravity is considered in the framework of metric-affine formalism. We discuss the field equations in empty space and in presence of perfect fluid matter taking into account the analogy with the Palatini formalism. As a result, the extra curvature and torsion degrees of freedom can be dealt as an effective scalar field of fully geometric origin. From a cosmological point of view, such a geometric description could account for the whole Dark Side of the Universe.

Reconstruction of the Scalar-Tensor Lagrangian from a LCDM Background and Noether Symmetry

We consider scalar-tensor theories and reconstruct their potential U(Φ) and coupling F(Φ) by demanding a background LCDM cosmology. In particular we impose a background cosmic history H(z) provided by the usual flat LCDM parameterization through the radiation (w_{eff}=1/3), matter (w_{eff}=0) and deSitter (w_{eff}=-1) eras. The cosmological dynamical system which is constrained to obey the LCDM cosmic history presents five critical points in each era, one of which corresponding to the standard General Relativity (GR). In the cases that differ from GR, the reconstructed coupling and potential are of the form F(Φ)\sim Φ^2 and U(Φ)\sim F(Φ)^m where m is a constant. This class of scalar tensor theories is also theoretically motivated by a completely independent approach: imposing maximal Noether symmetry on the scalar-tensor Lagrangian. This approach provides independently: i) the form of the coupling and the potential as F(Φ)\sim Φ^2 and U(Φ)\sim F(Φ)^m, ii) a conserved charge related to the potential and the coupling and iii) allows the derivation of exact solutions by first integrals of motion.

Stochastic background of relic scalar gravitational waves from scalar-tensor gravity

A stochastic background of relic gravitational waves is achieved by the so called adiabatically-amplified zero-point fluctuations process derived from early inflation. In principle, it provides a distinctive spectrum of relic gravitational waves. In the framework of scalar-tensor gravity, we discuss the scalar modes of gravitational waves and the primordial production of this scalar component which is generated beside tensorial one. We discuss also the upper limit for such a relic scalar component with respect to the WMAP constraints.

Dark energy models toward observational tests and data

A huge amount of good quality astrophysical data converges towards the picture of a spatially flat universe undergoing the today observed phase of accelerated expansion. This new observational trend is commonly addressed as Precision Cosmology. Despite of the quality of astrophysical surveys, the nature of dark energy dominating the matter-energy content of the universe is still unknown and a lot of different scenarios are viable candidates to explain cosmic acceleration. Methods to test these cosmological models are based on distance measurements and lookback time toward astronomical objects used as standard candles. I discuss the characterizing parameters and constraints of three different classes of dark energy models pointing out the related degeneracy problem which is the signal that more data at low (z= 0- 1), medium (1<z<10) and high (10 <z< 1000) redshift are needed to definitively select realistic models.

Constraining scalar-tensor quintessence by cosmic clocks

Scalar-tensor quintessence models can be constrained by identifying suitable cosmic clocks which allow to select confidence regions for cosmological parameters. In particular, we constrain the characterizing parameters of non-minimally coupled scalar-tensor cosmological models which admit exact solutions of the Einstein field equations. Lookback time to galaxy clusters at low intermediate, and high redshifts is considered. The high redshift time-scale problem is also discussed in order to select other cosmic clocks such as quasars.

Nonlinear Realization of the Local Conform-Affine Symmetry Group for Gravity in the Composite Fiber Bundle Formalism

A gauge theory of gravity based on a nonlinear realization (NLR) of the local Conform-Affine (CA) group of symmetry transformations is presented. The coframe fields and gauge connections of the theory are obtained. The tetrads and Lorentz group metric are used to induce a spacetime metric. The inhomogenously transforming (under the Lorentz group) connection coefficients serve as gravitational gauge potentials used to define covariant derivatives accommodating minimal coupling of matter and gauge fields. On the other hand, the tensor valued connection forms serve as auxillary dynamical fields associated with the dilation, special conformal and deformational (shear) degrees of freedom inherent in the bundle manifold. The bundle curvature of the theory is determined. Boundary topological invariants are constructed. They serve as a prototype (source free) gravitational Lagrangian. The Bianchi identities, covariant field equations and gauge currents are obtained.

Dark energy, cosmological constant and neutrino mixing

The today estimated value of dark energy can be achieved by the vacuum condensate induced by neutrino mixing phenomenon. Such a tiny value is recovered for a cut-off of the order of Planck scale and it is linked to the sub eV neutrino mass scale. Contributions to dark energy from auxiliary fields or mechanisms are not necessary in this approach.

Neutrino mixing as a source of dark energy

We show that the vacuum condensate due to neutrino mixing in quantum field theory (QFT) contributes to the dark energy budget of the universe which gives rise to the accelerated behavior of cosmic flow. The mechanism of neutrino mixing is therefore a possible candidate to contribute to the cosmological dark energy.

The Sersic Virial Hyperplane

Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are known to possess a number of quite useful scaling relations among their photometric and/or kinematical quantities. We propose a unified picture reducing both the fundamental plane and the photometric plane to suitable projections of a single relation. Modelling the ETG as a two component system, made out of a luminous Sersic profile and a NFW dark halo, and applying the virial theorem, we are able to express the velocity dispersion σ_0 as a function of the effective intensity I_e, the effective radius R_e and the Sersic index n. In a log-log plot, this relation reduces to a hyperplane (i.e., a plane in a four dimensional configuration space) which we dubbed the {\it Sersic Virial Hyperplane} (SVH). The tilt of the SVH can be fully explained in terms of a power-law scaling of the stellar (rather than the global) mass-to-light ratio Upsilon with the total luminosity L_T, while the scatter is determined by those on the c-M_{vir} relation between the concentration c and the virial mass M_{vir} of the dark halo component. In order to test whether such the observed SVH is consistent with the theoretical assumptions, we perform a detailed simulation of a large ETGs sample reproducing the same photometric properties of a SDSS low redshift ETGs catalog. It turns out that the simulated SVH is fully consistent with the observed one thus validating our theoretical approach.

The cosmological constant as an eigenvalue of f(R)-gravity Hamiltonian constraint

In the framework of ADM formalism, it is possible to find out eigenvalues of the WDW equation with the meaning of vacuum states, i.e. cosmological constants, for f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is a generic analytic function of the Ricci curvature scalar R. The explicit calculation is performed for a Schwarzschild metric where one-loop energy is derived by the zeta function regularization method and a renormalized running Lambda constant is obtained.

A Bound Quantum Particle in a Riemann-Cartan space with Topological Defects and Planar Potential

Starting from a continuum theory of defects, that is the analogous to three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble gravity, we consider a charged particle with spin 1/2 propagating in a uniform magnetic field coincident with a wedge dispiration of finite extent. We assume the particle is bound in the vicinity of the dispiration by long range attractive (harmonic) and short range (inverse square) repulsive potentials. Moreover, we consider the effects of spin-torsion and spin-magnetic field interactions. Exact expressions for the energy eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are determined. The limit, in which the defect region becomes singular, is considered and comparison with the electromagnetic Aharonov-Bohm effect is made.

Low surface brightness galaxies rotation curves in the low energy limit of $R^n$ gravity : no need for dark matter?

We investigate the possibility that the observed flatness of the rotation curves of spiral galaxies is not an evidence for the existence of dark matter haloes, but rather a signal of the breakdown of General Relativity. To this aim, we consider power - law fourth order theories of gravity obtained by replacing the scalar curvature $R$ with $f(R) = f_0 R^n$ in the gravity Lagrangian. We show that, in the low energy limit, the gravitational potential generated by a pointlike source may be written as $Φ(r) \propto r^{-1} \left [ 1 + (r/r_c)^β \right ]$ with $β$ a function of the slope $n$ of the gravity Lagrangian and $r_c$ a scalelength depending on the gravitating system properties. In order to apply the model to realistic systems, we compute the modified potential and the rotation curve for spherically symmetric and for thin disk mass distributions. It turns out that the potential is still asymptotically decreasing, but the corrected rotation curve, although not flat, is higher than the Newtonian one thus offering the possibility to fit rotation curves without dark matter. To test the viability of the model, we consider a sample of 15 low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies with combined HI and H$α$ measurements of the rotation curve extending in the putative dark matter dominated region. We find a very good agreement between the theoretical rotation curve and the data using only stellar disk and interstellar gas.
