Confinement vs Deconfinement of Cooper Pairs in One-Dimensional Spin-3/2 Fermionic Cold Atoms

The phase diagram of spin-3/2 fermionic cold atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice is investigated at quarter filling (one atom per site) by means of large-scale numerical simulations. In full agreement with a recent low-energy approach, we find two phases with confined and deconfined Cooper pairs separated by an Ising quantum phase transition. The leading instability in the confined phase is an atomic-density wave with subdominant quartet superfluid instability made of four fermions. Finally, we reveal the existence of a bond-ordered Mott insulating phase in some part of the repulsive regime.

Spin nematic phases in models of correlated electron systems: a numerical study

Strongly interacting systems are known to often spontaneously develop exotic ground states under certain conditions. For instance, spin nematic phases have been discovered in various magnetic models. Such phases, which break spin symmetry but have no net local magnetization, have also been proposed by Nersesyan et al. (J. Phys.: Cond. Matt. 3, 3353 (1991)) in the context of electronic models. We introduce a N-flavor microscopic model that interpolates from the large-N limit, where mean-field is valid and such a nematic phase occurs, to the more realistic N=1 case. By using a sign-free quantum Monte-Carlo, we show the existence of a spin nematic phase (analogous to a spin flux phase) for finite N; when N decreases, quantum fluctuations increase and this phase ultimately disappears in favor of an s-wave superconducting state. We also show that this nematic phase extends up to a finite critical charge doping. Dynamical studies allow us to clarify the Fermi surface property: in the nematic phase at half-filling, it consists of 4 points and the low-energy structure has a Dirac cone-like shape. Under doping, we observe clear signatures of Fermi pockets around these points. This is one of the few examples where numerical simulations show how quantum fluctuations can destroy a large-N phase.

Zeeman effect in superconducting two-leg ladders: irrational magnetization plateaus and exceeding the Pauli limit

The effect of a parallel magnetic field on superconducting two-leg ladders is investigated numerically. The magnetization curve displays an irrational plateau at a magnetization equal to the hole density. Remarkably, its stability is fundamentally connected to the existence of a well-known magnetic resonant mode. Once the zero-field spin gap is suppressed by the field, pairs acquire a finite momentum characteristic of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase. In addition, S^z=0 triplet superconducting correlations coexist with singlet ones above the irrational plateau. This provides a simple mechanism in which the Pauli limit is exceeded as suggested by recent experiments.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Resonant magnetic mode in superconducting 2-leg ladders

The spin dynamics of a doped 2-leg spin ladder is investigated by numerical techniques. We show that a hole pair-magnon boundstate evolves at finite hole doping into a sharp magnetic excitation below the two-particle continuum. This is supported by a field theory argument based on a SO(6)-symmetric ladder. Similarities and differences with the resonant mode of the high-T$_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Antiholons in one-dimensional t-J models

Using a newly developed hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for the nearest-neighbor (n.n.) t-J model, we show that antiholons identified in the supersymmetric inverse squared (IS) t-J model are clearly visible in the electron addition spectrum of the n.n. t-J model at J=2t and also for J=0.5t, a value of experimental relevance.

Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.

Recent progress in the truncated Lanczos method : application to hole-doped spin ladders

The truncated Lanczos method using a variational scheme based on Hilbert space reduction as well as a local basis change is re-examined. The energy is extrapolated as a power law function of the Hamiltonian variance. This systematic extrapolation procedure is tested quantitatively on the two-leg t-J ladder with two holes. For this purpose, we have carried out calculations of the spin gap and of the pair dispersion up to size 2x15.

Spin and charge dynamics of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic two-dimensional half-filled Kondo lattice model

We present a detailed numerical study of spin and charge dynamics of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with hopping t and exchange J. At T=0 and J > 0, the competition between the RKKY interaction and Kondo effect triggers a quantum phase transition between magnetically ordered and disordered insulators: J_c/t = 1.45(5). The quasiparticle gap scales as |J|. S(q,ω), evolves smoothly from its strong coupling form with spin gap at q = (π,π) to a spin wave form. At J>0, A(\vec{k},ω) shows a dispersion relation following that of hybridized bands. For J < J_c this feature is supplemented by shadows thus pointing to a coexistence of Kondo screening and magnetism. For J < 0 A(\vec{k},ω) is similar to that of non-interacting electrons in a staggered magnetic field. Spin, T_S, and charge, T_C, scales are defined. For weak to intermediate couplings, T_S marks the onset of antiferromagnetic fluctuations and follows a J^2 law. At strong couplings T_S scales as J. T_C scales as J both at weak and strong couplings. At and slightly below T_C we observe i) a rise in the resistivity as a function of decreasing temperature, ii) a dip in the integrated density of states at the Fermi energy and iii) the occurrence of hybridized bands in A(k,ω). It is shown that in the weak coupling limit, the charge gap of order J is of magnetic origin. The specific heat shows a two peak structure, the low temperature peak being of magnetic origin. Our results are compared to various mean-field theories.

Numerical Calculations of the B1g Raman Spectrum of the Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Model

The B1g Raman spectrum of the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model is discussed within Loudon-Fleury theory at both zero and finite temperature. The exact T=0 spectrum for lattices with up to 6*6 sites is computed using Lanczos exact diagonalization. A quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method is used to calculate the corresponding imaginary-time correlation function and its first two derivatives for lattices with up to 16*16 spins. The imaginary-time data is continued to real frequency using the maximum-entropy method, as well as a fit based on spinwave theory. The numerical results are compared with spinwave calculations for finite lattices. There is a surprisingly large change in the exact spectrum going from 4*4 to 6*6 sites. In the former case there is a single dominant two-magnon peak at frequency w/J appr. 3.0, whereas in the latter case there are two approximately equal-sized peaks at w/J appr. 2.7 and 3.9. This is in good qualitative agreement with the spinwave calculations including two-magnon processes on the same lattices. Both the Lanczos and the QMC results indicate that the actual infinite-size two-magnon profile is broader than the narrow peak obtained in spinwave theory, but the positions of the maxima agree to within a few percent. The higher-order contributions present in the numerical results are merged with the two-magnon profile and extend up to frequencies w/J appr. 7. The first three frequency cumulants of the spectrum are in excellent agreement with results previously obtained from a series expansion around the Ising limit. Typical experimental B1g$ spectra for La2CuO4 are only slightly broader than what we obtain here. The exchange constant extracted from the peak position is J appr. 1400K, in good agreement with values obtained from neutron scattering and NMR experiments.

Universal scaling behavior of coupled chains of interacting fermions

The single-particle hopping between two chains is investigated by exact-diagonalizations techniques supplemented by finite-size scaling analysis. In the case of two coupled strongly-correlated chains of spinless fermions, the Taylor expansion of the expectation value of the single-particle interchain hopping operator of an electron at momentum k_F in powers of the interchain hopping t_perp is shown to become unstable in the thermodynamic limit. In the regime alpha alpha_{tp}, the scaling law is proven to change its functional form, thus signaling, for the first time numerically, the onset of coherent transverse two-particle hopping.

The Ferromagnetic Kondo Model for Manganites: Phase Diagram and Charge Segregation Effects

The phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo model for manganites is investigated using computational techniques. In clusters of dimensions 1 and 2, Monte Carlo simulations in the limit where the localized spins are classical show a rich low temperature phase diagram with three dominant regions: (i) a ferromagnetic phase, (ii) phase separation between hole-poor antiferromagnetic and hole-rich ferromagnetic domains, and (iii) a phase with incommensurate spin correlations. Possible experimental consequences of the regime of phase separation are discussed. Studies using the Lanczos algorithm and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method applied to chains with localized spin 1/2 (with and without Coulombic repulsion for the mobile electrons) and spin 3/2 degrees of freedom give results in excellent agreement with those in the spin localized classical limit. The Dynamical Mean Field ($D=\infty$) approximation was also applied to the same model. At large Hund coupling phase separation and ferromagnetism were identified, again in good agreement with results in low dimensions. In addition, a Monte Carlo study of spin correlations allowed us to estimate the critical temperature for ferromagnetism $T_c^{FM}$ in 3 dimensional clusters. It is concluded that $T_c^{FM}$ is compatible with current experimental results.

Transverse transport in coupled strongly correlated electronic chains

One-particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chain problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent αwhich characterizes the 1D Luttinger liquid. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping (defined by a non-vanishing splitting) can be totally suppressed for α\sim 0.4 or even smaller αvalues. The transverse conductivity is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part even when coherent inter-chain hopping is believed to occur (at small αvalues). Implications for the optical experiments in quasi-1D organic or high-T_c superconductors is outlined.

Confinement and transverse conductivity in coupled Luttinger liquids

One--particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chains problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent $α$ which characterizes the $1D$ Luttinger liquid. Moderate intra-chain interactions can lead to a strong reduction of this splitting. The on-set of the confinement within the individual chains (defined by a vanishing splitting) seems to be governed by $α$. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping can be totally suppressed for $α\sim 0.4$ or even smaller $α$ values. The transverse conductivty is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part. Even when coherent inter-chain hopping is believed to occur (at small $α$ values), it is shown that the coherent Drude weight is always significantly smaller than the incoherent weight. Implications for the optical experiments in quasi-1D organic or high-$T_c$ superconductors is outlined.

One particle interchain hopping in coupled Hubbard chains

Interchain hopping in systems of coupled chains of correlated electrons is investigated by exact diagonalizations and Quantum-Monte-Carlo methods. For two weakly coupled Hubbard chains at commensurate densities (e.g. n=1/3) the splitting at the Fermi level between bonding and antibonding bands is strongly reduced (but not suppressed) by repulsive interactions extending to a few lattice spacings. The magnitude of this reduction is directly connected to the exponent $α$ of the 1D Luttinger liquid. However, we show that the incoherent part of the single particle spectral function is much less affected by the interchain coupling. This suggests that incoherent interchain hopping could occur for intermediate $α$ values.
