Phase fluctuations, dissipation and superfluid stiffness in d-wave superconductors

We study the effect of dissipation on quantum phase fluctuations in d-wave superconductors. Dissipation, arising from a nonzero low frequency optical conductivity which has been measured in experiments below $T_c$, has two effects: (1) a reduction of zero point phase fluctuations, and (2) a reduction of the temperature at which one crosses over to classical thermal fluctuations. For parameter values relevant to the cuprates, we show that the crossover temperature is still too large for classical phase fluctuations to play a significant role at low temperature. Quasiparticles are thus crucial in determining the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane superfluid stiffness. Thermal phase fluctuations become important at higher temperatures and play a role near $T_c$.

Gap and pseudogap evolution within the charge-ordering scenario for superconducting cuprates

We describe the spectral properties of underdoped cuprates as resulting from a momentum-dependent pseudogap in the normal state spectrum. Such a model accounts, within a BCS approach, for the doping dependence of the critical temperature and for the two-parameter leading-edge shift observed in the cuprates. By introducing a phenomenological temperature dependence of the pseudogap, which finds a natural interpretation within the stripe quantum-critical-point scenario for high-T_c superconductors, we reproduce also the T_c-T^* bifurcation near optimum doping. Finally, we briefly discuss the different role of the gap and the pseudogap in determining the spectral and thermodynamical properties of the model at low temperatures.

The physics of the stripe quantum critical point in the superconducting cuprates

We elaborate on several observable consequences of the Quantum-Critical-Point scenario. In particular we show that the strong k-dependent scattering of the quasiparticles with the quasi-critical charge and spin fluctuations reproduces the main features of the low-energy spectral weights and of the observed Fermi surfaces. In the underdoped cuprates the attractive k-dependent charge scattering drives the formation of the pseudogap at the M points below the crossover temperature T^*. In this context we discuss models for pseudogap formation with relevant scattering in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels. The experimental consequences for the pair-fluctuation and for the pseudogap behavior are investigated.

Critical properties and phase diagram of the quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a random magnetic field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.

Phase Diagram of the 1D Kondo Lattice Model

We determine the boundary of the fully polarized ferromagnetic ground state in the one dimensional Kondo lattice model at partial conduction electron band filling by using a newly developed infinite size DMRG method which conserves the total spin quantum number. The obtained paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase boundary is below $J \approx 3.5$ for the whole range of band filling. By this we solve the controversy in the phase diagram over the extent of the ferromagnetic region close to half filling.

Charge and spin inhomogeneity as a key to the physics of the high Tc cuprates

We present a coherent scenario for the physics of cuprate superconductors, which is based on a charge-driven inhomogeneity, i.e. the ``stripe phase''. We show that spin and charge critical fluctuations near the stripe instability of strongly correlated electron systems provide an effective interaction between the quasiparticles, which is strongly momentum, frequency, temperature and doping dependent. This accounts for the various phenomena occurring in the overdoped, optimally and underdoped regimes both for the normal and the superconductive phase.

The Stripe-Phase Quantum-Critical-Point Scenario for High-Tc Superconductors

A summary is given of the main outcomes of the quantum-critical-point scenario for high-$T_c$ superconductors, developed in the last few years by the Rome group. Phase separation, which commonly occurs in strongly correlated electronic systems, turns into a stripe instability when Coulomb interaction is taken into account. The stripe phase continuously connects the high doping regime, dominated by charge degrees of freedom to the low doping regime where spin degrees of freedom are most relevant. Dynamical stripe fluctuations enslave antiferromagnetic fluctuations at high doping. Critical fluctuations near the stripe instability mediate a singular interaction between quasiparticles, which is responsible for the non-Fermi liquid behavior in the metallic phase and for the Cooper pairing with d-wave symmetry in the superconducting phase.

Fermi Surface and gap parameter in high-Tc superconductors: the Stripe Quantum Critical Point scenario

We study the single-particle spectral properties of electrons coupled to quasicritical charge and spin fluctuations close to a stripe-phase, which is governed by a Quantum Critical Point near optimum doping. We find that spectral weight is transferred from the quasiparticle peak to incoherent dispersive features. As a consequence the distribution of low-laying spectral weight is modified with respect to the quasiparticle Fermi surface. The interplay of charge and spin fluctuations reproduces features of the observed Fermi surface, such as the asymmetric suppression of spectral weight near the M points of the Brillouin zone. Within the model, we also analyze the interplay between repulsive spin and attractive charge fluctuations in determining the symmetry and the peculiar momentum dependence of the superconducting gap parameter. When both spin and charge fluctuations are coupled to the electrons, we find $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave gap symmetry in a wide range of parameter. A crossover $d$- vs $s$-wave symmetry of the gap may occur when the strength of charge fluctuations increases with respect to spin fluctuations.

Quantum Ising model in a transverse random field: A density-matrix renormalization group analysis

The spin-1/2 quantum Ising chain in a transverse random magnetic field is studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The system evolves from an ordered to a paramagnetic state as the amplitude of the random field is increased. The dependence of the magnetization on a uniform magnetic field in the z direction and the spontaneous magnetization as a function of the amplitude of the transverse random magnetic field are determined. The behavior of the spin-spin correlation function both above and at criticality is studied. The scaling laws for magnetization and correlation functions are tested against previous numerical and renormalization-group results.

Shadow bands, gap and pseudogaps in high-T_c superconductors

Within the framework of the Charge Density Wave Quantum Critical Point (CDW-QCP) scenario for high-T_c superconductors (HTCS), we introduce a model for tight-binding electrons coupled to quasi-critical fluctuations. In the normal state our model reproduces features of the Fermi Surface (FS) observed in ARPES measurements on optimally doped Bi2212, such as the anisotropic suppression of spectral weight around the M points of the Brillouin zone. The spectral density is characterized by a transfer of spectral weight from the main quasi-particle peak to dispersing shadow peaks which originate branches of a shadow FS. In the superconducting state our model reproduces the d-wave symmetry of the gap parameter, which results from a balance between small-q attraction and large-q repulsion. The gap parameter is enhanced due to cooperative effects of charge and spin fluctuations.

Single-particle properties of a model for coexisting charge and spin quasi-critical fluctuations coupled to electrons

We study the single-particle spectral properties of a model for coexisting AFM and ICDW critical fluctuations coupled to electrons, which naturally arises in the context of the stripe-quantum-critical-point scenario for high-Tc superconducting materials. Within a perturbative approach, we show that the on-shell inverse scattering time deviates from the normal Fermi-liquid behavior near the points of the Fermi surface connected by the characteristic wave-vectors of the critical fluctuations (hot spots). The anomalous behavior is stronger when the hot spots are located near singular points of the electronic spectrum. The violations to the normal Fermi-liquid behavior are associated with the transfer of spectral weight from the quasi-particle peak to incoherent shadow peaks, which produces an enhancement of incoherent spectral weight near the Fermi level. We use our results to discuss recent ARPES experiments on Bi2212 near optimal doping.
