Matter-antimatter asymmetry in generalized coupling theories

We explore the gravitational baryogenesis paradigm in the homogeneous and isotropic cosmology of generalized coupling gravity and, in particular, of the so-called Minimal Exponential Measure Model (MEMe). We show that, also in this theory, the time derivative of the Ricci scalar couples with matter currents and can preserve an unbalance in the baryon-antibaryon number beyond thermal equilibrium. Using the current bounds on the ratio of baryon number to entropy density, we can considerably improve the known constraints on the parameter q that characterizes the MEMe model. This estimate also allows us to draw stringent constraints on the spatial curvature of the cosmological model.

Relativistic GPS in 3-dimensions

We extend to three dimensions the proposal of a completely relativistic positioning system (rPS). The system does not rely on approximations, in fact, it works at a few Schwarzschild radii from a black hole, and it does not rely on Newtonian physics or special relativity. Since general relativity (GR) claims to be our fundamental framework to describe classical physics, it must provide tools to bootstrap physics within the theory itself, without relying on previous approximated frameworks. The rPS is able to self-diagnose, that is, it detects deviations from assumptions about the gravitational field and consequently stops operations; in addition it is robust, i.e., it is able to autonomously restore operations when assumptions are restored. From a more general viewpoint, the rPS is equivalent to geodesy in spacetime, which establishes a (conventional) coordinate system on a surface by means of measurements within the surface itself, as well as allowing it to extract information about the intrinsic geometry of the same surface. In other words, the positioning system is potentially able to extract information about the gravitational field (which in fact is identified with the geometry of spacetime) in addition to the gravitational theory, which describes its dynamics. Thus, it becomes a framework within which one can operationally distinguish different theories of gravitation.

Non minimally coupled condensate cosmologies: matching observational data with phase space

We compare theoretical predictions with observations for a class of cosmological models in which the dark energy component is modeled as a fermionic condensate, non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field and characterized by some specific self-interaction potentials. Our analysis is based on the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method (MCMC) and employs different data sets. It turns out that with an appropriate choice of parameters our models are fully compatible with several observed data. We combine these parameter values with phase space analysis to deduce the features of the entire cosmic history of the considered models.

Analogue Transformations in Physics and their Application to Acoustics

Transformation optics has shaped up a revolutionary electromagnetic design paradigm, enabling scientists to build astonishing devices such as invisibility cloaks. Unfortunately, the application of transformation techniques to other branches of physics is often constrained by the structure of the field equations. We develop here a complete transformation method using the idea of analogue spacetimes. The method is general and could be considered as a new paradigm for controlling waves in different branches of physics, from acoustics in quantum fluids to graphene electronics. As an application, we derive an "analogue transformation acoustics" formalism that naturally allows the use of transformations mixing space and time or involving moving fluids, both of which were impossible with the standard approach. To demonstrate the power of our method, we give an explicit design of a spacetime compressor for acoustic waves and a carpet cloak for a moving aircraft.

Transformational acoustic metamaterials based on pressure gradients

We apply a homogenization process to the acoustic velocity potential wave equation. The study of various examples shows that the resulting effective properties are different from those of the homogenized pressure wave equation for the same underlying acoustic parameters. A careful analysis reveals that a given set of inhomogeneous parameters represents an entirely different physical system depending on the considered equation. Our findings unveil a different way of tailoring acoustic properties through gradients of the static pressure. In contrast to standard metafluids based on isobaric composites, this alternative kind of metafluids is suitable for the implementation of transformational devices designed via the velocity potential equation. This includes acoustic systems in a moving background or arising from general space-time transformations. As an example, we design a device able to cloak the acoustic velocity potential.

Spacetime transformation acoustics

A recently proposed analogue transformation method has allowed the extension of transformation acoustics to general spacetime transformations. We analyze here in detail the differences between this new analogue transformation acoustics (ATA) method and the standard one (STA). We show explicitly that STA is not suitable for transformations that mix space and time. ATA takes as starting point the acoustic equation for the velocity potential, instead of that for the pressure as in STA. This velocity-potential equation by itself already allows for some transformations mixing space and time, but not all of them. We explicitly obtain the entire set of transformations that do not leave its form invariant. It is in these cases that ATA shows its true potential, allowing for building a transformation acoustics method that enables the full range of spacetime transformations. We provide an example of an important transformation which cannot be achieved with STA. Using this transformation, we design and simulate an acoustic frequency converter via the ATA approach. Furthermore, in those cases in which one can apply both the STA and ATA approaches, we study the different transformational properties of the corresponding physical quantities.

Analogue transformation acoustics and the compression of spacetime

A recently developed technique known as analogue transformation acoustics has allowed the extension of the transformational paradigm to general spacetime transformations under which the acoustic equations are not form invariant. In this paper, we review the fundamentals of analogue transformation acoustics and show how this technique can be applied to build a device that increases the density of events within a given spacetime region by simultaneously compressing space and time.

Some remarks on the dynamical systems approach to fourth order gravity

Building on earlier work, we discuss a general framework for exploring the cosmological dynamics of Higher Order Theories of Gravity. We show that once the theory of gravity has been specified, the cosmological equations can be written as a first-order autonomous system and we give several examples which illustrate the utility of our method. We also discuss a number of results which have appeared recently in the literature.

The evolution of cosmological gravitational waves in f(R) gravity

We give a rigorous and mathematically clear presentation of the Covariant and Gauge Invariant theory of gravitational waves in a perturbed Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe for Fourth Order Gravity, where the matter is described by a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state. As an example of a consistent analysis of tensor perturbations in Fourth Order Gravity, we apply the formalism to a simple background solution of R^n gravity. We obtain the exact solutions of the perturbation equations for scales much bigger than and smaller than the Hubble radius. It is shown that the evolution of tensor modes is highly sensitive to the choice of n and an interesting new feature arises. During the radiation dominated era, their exist a growing tensor perturbation for nearly all choices of n. This occurs even when the background model is undergoing accelerated expansion as opposed to the case of General Relativity. Consequently, cosmological gravitational wave modes can in principle provide a strong constraint on the theory of gravity independent of other cosmological data sets.

The evolution of density perturbations in f(R) gravity

We give a rigorous and mathematically well defined presentation of the Covariant and Gauge Invariant theory of scalar perturbations of a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe for Fourth Order Gravity, where the matter is described by a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state. The general perturbations equations are applied to a simple background solution of R^n gravity. We obtain exact solutions of the perturbations equations for scales much bigger than the Hubble radius. These solutions have a number of interesting features. In particular, we find that for all values of n there is always a growing mode for the density contrast, even if the universe undergoes an accelerated expansion. Such a behaviour does not occur in standard General Relativity, where as soon as Dark Energy dominates, the density contrast experiences an unrelenting decay. This peculiarity is sufficiently novel to warrant further investigation on fourth order gravity models.

Cosmological dynamics of R^n gravity

A detailed analysis of dynamics of cosmological models based on $R^{n}$ gravity is presented. We show that the cosmological equations can be written as a first order autonomous system and analyzed using the standard techniques of dynamical system theory. In absence of perfect fluid matter, we find exact solutions whose behavior and stability are analyzed in terms of the values of the parameter $n$. When matter is introduced, the nature of the (non-minimal) coupling between matter and higher order gravity induces restrictions on the allowed values of $n$. Selecting such intervals of values and following the same procedure used in the vacuum case, we present exact solutions and analyze their stability for a generic value of the parameter $n$. From this analysis emerges the result that for a large set of initial conditions an accelerated expansion is an attractor for the evolution of the $R^n$ cosmology. When matter is present a transient almost-Friedman phase can also be present before the transition to an accelerated expansion.

Constraining Van der Waals quintessence by observations

We discuss an alternative approach to quintessence modifying the usual equation of state of the cosmological fluid in order to see if going further than the approximation of perfect fluid allows to better reproduce the available data. We consider a cosmological model comprising only two fluids, namely baryons (modelled as dust) and dark matter with a Van der Waals equation of state. First, the general features of the model are presented and then the evolution of the energy density, the Hubble parameter and the scale factor are determined showing that it is possible to obtain accelerated expansion choosing suitably the model parameters. We use the estimated age of the universe and the data on the dimensionless coordinate distances to Type Ia supernovae and distant radio galaxies to see whether Van der Waals quintessence is viable to explain dark energy and to constrain its parameters.

Higher Order Curvature Theories of Gravity Matched with Observations: a Bridge Between Dark Energy and Dark Matter Problems

Higher order curvature gravity has recently received a lot of attention due to the fact that it gives rise to cosmological models which seem capable of solving dark energy and quintessence issues without using "ad hoc" scalar fields. Such an approach is naturally related to fundamental theories of quantum gravity which predict higher order terms for loop expansions of quantum fields in curved spacetimes. In this framework, we obtain a class of cosmological solutions which are fitted against cosmological data. We reproduce reliable models able to fit high redshift supernovae and WMAP observations. The age of the universe and other cosmological parameters are recovered in this context. Furthermore, in the weak field limit, we obtain gravitational potentials which differ from the Newtonian one because of repulsive corrections increasing with distance. We evaluate the rotation curve of our Galaxy and compare it with the observed data in order to test the viability of these theories and to estimate the scale-length of the correction. It is remarkable that the Milky Way rotation curve is well fitted without the need of any dark matter halo and similar results hold also for other galaxies.

Can higher order curvature theories explain rotation curves of galaxies?

Higher order curvature gravity has recently received a lot of attention due to the fact that it gives rise to cosmological models which seem capable of solving dark energy and quintessence issues without using "ad hoc" scalar fields. In this letter, a gravitational potential is obtained which differs from the Newtonian one because of a repulsive correction increasing with distance. We evaluate the rotation curve of our Galaxy and compare it with the observed data in order both to test the viability of these theories and to estimate the scalelength of the correction. It is remarkable that the Milky Way rotation curve is well fitted without the need of any dark matter halo and a similar result tentatively holds also for other galaxies.

Neutrino mixing contribution to the cosmological constant

We show that the non-perturbative vacuum structure associated with neutrino mixing leads to a non-zero contribution to the value of the cosmological constant. Such a contribution comes from the specific nature of the mixing phenomenon. Its origin is completely different from the one of the ordinary contribution of a massive spinor field. We estimate this neutrino mixing contribution by using the natural cut--off appearing in the quantum field theory formalism for neutrino mixing and oscillation.

Curvature quintessence matched with observational data

Quintessence issues can be achieved by taking into account higher order curvature invariants into the effective action of gravitational field. Such an approach is naturally related to fundamental theories of quantum gravity which predict higher order terms in loop expansion of quantum fields in curved space-times. In this framework, we obtain a class of cosmological solutions which are fitted against cosmological data. We reproduce encouraging results able to fit high redshift supernovae and WMAP observations. The age of the universe and other cosmological parameters are discussed in this context.

Quintessence without scalar fields

The issues of quintessence and cosmic acceleration can be discussed in the framework of theories which do not include necessarily scalar fields. It is possible to define pressure and energy density for new components considering effective theories derived from fundamental physics like the extended theories of gravity or simply generalizing the state equation of matter. Exact accelerated expanding solutions can be achieved in several schemes: either in models containing higher order curvature and torsion terms or in models where the state equation of matter is corrected by a second order Van der Waals terms. In this review, we present such new approaches and compare them with observations.

Curvature and Torsion Quintessence

The issues of quintessence and cosmic acceleration can be discussed in the framework of higher order curvature and torsion theories of gravity. We can define effective pressure and energy density directly connected to the curvature or to the torsion fields and then ask for the conditions to get an accelerated expansion. Exact accelerated expanding solutions can be achieved for several fourth order curvature or torsion theories so that we obtain an alternative scheme to the standard quintessence scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity, usually adopted. We discuss also conformal transformations in order to see the links of quintessence between the Jordan and Einstein frames. Furthermore, we take into account a torsion fluid whose effects become relevant at large scale. Specifically, we investigate a model where a totally antisymmetric torsion field is taken into account discussing the conditions to obtain quintessence. We obtain exact solutions also in this case where dust dominated Friedmann behavior is recovered as soon as torsion effects are not relevant.
