The Horizontal Branch of NGC 1851: Constraints on the Cluster Subpopulations

We investigate the distribution of stars along the Horizontal Branch of the Galactic globular cluster NGC1851, to shed light on the progeny of the two distinct Subgiant Branch populations harbored by this cluster. On the basis of detailed synthetic Horizontal Branch modelling, we conclude that the two subpopulations are distributed in different regions of the observed Horizontal Branch: the evolved stars belonging to the bright Subgiant branch component are confined in the red portion of the observed sequence, whereas the ones belonging to the faint Subgiant branch component are distributed from the blue to the red, populating also the RR Lyrae instability strip. Our simulations strongly suggest that it is not possible to reproduce the observations assuming that the two subpopulations lose the same amount of mass along the Red Giant Branch. We warmly encourage empirical estimates of mass loss rates in Red Giant stars belonging to this cluster.

Asiago eclipsing binaries program. III. V570 Per

The orbit and physical parameters of the previously unsolved SB2 EB V570 Per are derived using high resolution Asiago Echelle spectroscopy and B, V photo-electric photometry. The metallicity from chi^2 analysis is [M/H]=+0.02 +/- 0.03, and reddening from interstellar NaI and KI absorption lines is E(B-V) =0.023 +/- 0.007. The two components have masses of 1.449 +/- 0.006 and 1.350 +/- 0.006 Msun and spectral types F3 and F5, respectively. They are both still within the Main Sequence band (T_1 =6842 +/- 25 K, T_2 =6562 +/- 25 K from chi^2 analysis, R_1 =1.523 +/- 0.030, R_2 =1.388 +/- 0.019 Rsun) and are dynamically relaxed to co-rotation with the orbital motion (Vrot sin i_{1,2} =40 and 36 (+/-1) km/sec). The distance to V570 Per obtained from the orbital solution is 123 +/- 2 pc, in excellent agreement with the revised Hipparcos distance of 123 +/- 11 pc. The observed properties of V570 Per components are compared to BaSTI models computed on purpose for exactly the observed masses and varied chemical compositions. This system is interesting since both components have their masses in the range where the efficiency of convective core overshooting has to decrease with the total mass as a consequence of the decreasing size of the convective core during the central H-burning stage. Our numerical simulations show that, a small but not null overshooting is required, with efficiencies lambda_{OV} =0.14 and 0.11 for the 1.449 and 1.350 Msun components, respectively. This confirms the finding of Paper II on the similar system V505 Per. At the approx 0.8 Gyr age of the system, the element diffusion has reduced the surface metallicity of the models from the initial [M/H]=+0.17 to [M/H]=+0.02, in perfect agreement with the spectroscopically derived [M/H]=+0.02 +/- 0.03 value.

Ground-based CCD astrometry with wide field imagers. II. A star catalogue for M67: WFI@2.2m MPG/ESO astrometry, FLAMES@VLT radial velocities

The solar-age open cluster M67 (C0847+120, NGC2682) is a touchstone in studies of the old Galactic disk. Despite its outstanding role, the census of cluster membership for M67 at fainter magnitudes and their properties are not well-established. Using the proprietary and archival ESO data, we have obtained astrometric, photometric, and radial velocities of stars in a 34'x 33' field centered on the old open cluster M67. The two-epoch archival observations separated by 4 years and acquired with the Wide Field Imager at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope have been reduced with our new astrometric techniques, as described in the first paper of this series. The same observations served to derive calibrated BVI photometry in M67. Radial velocities were measured using the archival and new spectroscopic data obtained at VLT. We have determined relative proper motions and membership probabilities for ~2,400 stars. The precision of proper motions for optimally exposed stars is ~2 mas/yr, gradually degrading down to ~5 mas/yr at V= 20. Our relatively precise proper motions at V>16 are first obtained in this magnitude range for M67. Radial velocities are measured for 211 stars in the same field. We also present a detailed comparison with recent theoretical isochrones from several independent groups. For M67 area we provide positions, calibrated BVI photometry, relative proper motions, membership probabilities, and radial velocities. We demonstrate that the ground-based CCD mosaic observations just a few years apart are producing proper motions, allowing a reliable membership determination. We produced a catalogue that is made electronically available to the astronomical community.

Reaching the End of the White Dwarf Cooling Sequence in NGC 6791

We present new observations of the white dwarf sequence of the old open cluster NGC 6791. The brighter peak previously observed in the white dwarf luminosity function (WDLF) is now better delineated, and the second, fainter peak that we suggested earlier is now confirmed. A careful study suggests that we have reached the end of the white dwarf sequence. The WDs that create the two peaks in the WDLF show a significant turn to the blue in the color-magnitude diagram. The discrepancy between the age from the WDs and that from the main sequence turnoff remains, and we have an additional puzzle in the second peak in the WDLF. Canonical WD models seem to fail --at least at ~25%-level-- in reproducing the age of clusters of this metallicity. We discuss briefly possible ways of arriving at a theoretical understanding of the WDLF.

Asiago eclipsing binaries program. II. V505 Per

The orbit and fundamental physical parameters of the double-lined eclipsing binary V505 Per are derived by means of Echelle high resolution, high S/N spectroscopy and B, V photometry. Effective temperatures, gravities, rotational velocities and metallicities are obtained from atmospheric chi^2 analysis. An E(B-V)<=0.01 mag reddening is derived from interstellar NaI and KI lines. The distance to the system computed from orbital parameters (60.6 +/- 1 pc) is identical to the newly re-reduced Hipparcos parallax (61.5 +/- 1.9 pc). The masses of the two components (M(1) = 1.2693 +/- 0.0011 and M(2) = 1.2514 +/- 0.0012 Msun) place them in the transition region between convective and radiative stellar cores of the HR diagram, with the more massive of the two showing already the effect of evolution within the Main Sequence band (T(1) = 6512 +/- 21 K, T(2) = 6462 +/- 12 K, R(1) = 1.287 +/- 0.014, R(2) = 1.266 +/- 0.013 Rsun). This makes this system of particular relevance to theoretical stellar models, as a test on the overshooting. We compare the firm observational results for V505 Per component stars with the predictions of various libraries of theoretical stellar models (BaSTI, Padova, Granada, Yonsei-Yale, Victoria-Regina) as well as BaSTI models computed specifically for the masses and chemical abundances of V505 Per. We found that the overshooting at the masses of V505 Per component stars is already pretty low, but not null, and described by efficiencies lambda(OV)=0.093 and 0.087 for the 1.27 and 1.25 Msun components, respectively. According to the computed BaSTI models, the age of the system is about 0.9 Gyr and the element diffusion during this time has reduced the surface metallicity from the initial [M/H]=-0.03 to the current [M/H]=-0.13, in excellent agreement with observed [M/H]=-0.12 +/- 0.03.

Metallicity estimates of Galactic Cepheids based on Walraven photometry

We present new empirical and theoretical calibrations of two photometric metallicity indices based on Walraven photometry. The empirical calibration relies on a sample of 48 Cepheids for which iron abundances based on high resolution spectra are available in the literature. They cover a broad range in metal abundance (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5) and the intrinsic accuracy of the Metallicity Index Color (MIC) relations is better than 0.2 dex. The theoretical calibration relies on a homogeneous set of scaled-solar evolutionary tracks for intermediate-mass stars and on pulsation predictions concerning the topology of the instability strip. The metal content of the adopted evolutionary tracks ranges from Z=0.001 to Z=0.03 and the intrinsic accuracy of the MIC relations is better than 0.1 dex.

The double Subgiant Branch of NGC 1851: the role of the CNO abundance

We explore the possibility that the anomalous split in the Subgiant branch of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 is due to the presence of two distinct stellar populations with very different initial metal mixtures: a normal alpha-enhanced component, and one characterized by strong anticorrelations among the CNONa abundances, with a total CNO abundance increased by a factor of two. We test this hypothesis taking into account various empirical constraints, and conclude that the two populations should be approximately coeval, with the same initial He-content. More high-resolution spectroscopical measurements of heavy elements -- and in particular of the CNO sum -- for this cluster are necessary to prove (or disprove) this scenario.

Stroemgren metallicity calibration: the m1, b-y relation

We performed a new calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index m1 based on the b-y color of cluster red giant stars. The current Metallicity-Index-Color relation is not linear in the color range 0.40 < b-y < 1.0, but provides iron abundances of cluster and field red giants with an accuracy of ~ 0.25 dex.

Impact of Rotation on the Evolution of Low-Mass Stars

High precision photometry and spectroscopy of low-mass stars reveal a variety of properties standard stellar evolution cannot predict. Rotation, an essential ingredient of stellar evolution, is a step towards resolving the discrepancy between model predictions and observations. The first rotating stellar model, continuously tracing a low-mass star from the pre-main sequence onto the horizontal branch, is presented. The predicted luminosity functions of stars of globular clusters and surface rotation velocities on the horizontal branch are discussed.

The Peculiar Horizontal Branch Morphology of the Galactic Globular Clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441: new insights from UV observations

In this paper we present multiband optical and UV Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the two Galactic globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. We have obtained the first UV color-magnitude diagrams for NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. These diagrams confirm previous results, obtained in optical bands, about the presence of a sizeable stellar population of extremely hot horizontal branch stars. At least in NGC 6388, we find a clear indication that at the hot end of the horizontal branch the distribution of stars forms a hook-like feature, closely resembling those observed in NGC 2808 and Omega Centauri. We briefly review the theoretical scenarios that have been suggested for interpreting this observational feature. We also investigate the tilted horizontal branch morphology and provide further evidence that supports early suggestions that this feature cannot be interpreted as an effect of differential reddening. We show that a possible solution of the puzzle is to assume that a small fraction - ranging between 10-20% - of the stellar population in the two clusters is strongly helium enriched (Y=0.40 in NGC 6388 and Y=0.35 in NGC 6441). The occurrence of a spread in the He abundance between the canonical value (Y=0.26) and the quoted upper limits can significantly help in explaining the whole morphology of the horizontal branch and the pulsational properties of the variable stars in the target clusters.

Stroemgren photometry of Galactic Globular Clusters. I. New Calibrations of the metallicity index

We present a new calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index m1 using red giant (RG) stars in 4 globular clusters (GCs:M92,M13,NGC1851,47Tuc) with metallicity ranging from [Fe/H]=-2.2 to -0.7, marginally affected by reddening (E(B-V)<0.04) and with accurate u,v,b,y photometry. The main difference between the new metallicity-index-color (MIC) relations and similar relations available in the literature is that we adopted the u-y/v-y colors instead of the b-y.These colors present a stronger sensitivity to effective temperature, and the MIC relations show a linear slope. The difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements for RGs in M71,NGC288,NGC362,NGC6397, and NGC6752 is 0.04+/-0.03dex (sigma=0.11dex). We also apply the MIC relations to 85 field RGs with metallicity raning from [Fe/H]=-2.4 to -0.5 and accurate reddening estimates. We find that the difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements is-0.14+/-0.01dex (sig=0.17dex). We also provide two sets of MIC relations based on evolutionary models that have been transformed into the observational plane by adopting either semi-empirical or theoretical color-temperature relations. We apply the semi-empirical relations to the 9 GCs and find that the difference between photometric and spectroscopic metallicities is 0.04+/-0.03dex (sig=0.10dex).A similar agreement is found for the sample of field RGs, with a difference of -0.09+/-0.03dex (sig=0.19dex).The difference between metallicity estimates based on theoretical relations and spectroscopic measurements is -0.11+/-0.03dex (sig=0.14dex) for the 9 GGCs and -0.24+/-0.03dex (sig=0.15dex) for the field RGs. Current evidence indicates that new MIC relations provide metallicities with an intrinsic accuracy better than 0.2dex.

Synthetic properties of bright metal-poor variables. II. BL Her stars

We investigate the properties of the so-called BL Her stars, i.e., Population II Cepheids with periods shorter than 8 days, using updated pulsation models and evolutionary tracks computed adopting a metal abundance in the range of Z=0.0001 to Z=0.004. We derive the predicted Period-Magnitude (PM) and Period-Wesenheit (PW) relations at the various photometric bands and we show that the slopes of these relations are in good agreement with the slopes determined by observed variables in Galactic globular clusters, independently of the adopted M_V(RR)-[Fe/H] relation to get the cluster RR Lyrae-based distance. Moreover, we show that also the distances provided by the predicted PM and PW relations for BL Her stars agree within the errors with the RR Lyrae based values. The use of the predicted relations with W Vir stars, which are Population II Cepheids with periods longer than 8 days, provides no clear evidence for or against a change in the PM and PW slopes around P~10 days.

A Triple Main Sequence in the Globular Cluster NGC 2808

Accurate photometry with HST/ACS shows that the main sequence of the globular cluster NGC 2808 splits into three separate branches. The three MS branches may be associated with complexities of the cluster's horizontal branch and of its abundance distribution. We attribute the MS branches to successive rounds of star formation, with different helium abundances; we discuss possible sources of helium enrichment. Some other massive globulars also appear to have complex populations; we compare them with NGC 2808.

The multiplicity of the subgiant branch of Omega Centauri: Evidence for prolonged star formation

We present metallicity measurements based on GIRAFFE@VLT spectra of 80 subgiant-branch stars of the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri. The VLT spectroscopic data are complemented by ACS/HST and WFI@ESO2.2m high-accuracy color-magnitude diagrams. We have obtained the [Fe/H] abundance for each of the 80 target stars, and the abundances of C, N, Ca, Ti, and Ba for a subset of them, by comparison with synthetic spectra. We show that stars with [Fe/H]<-1.25 have a large magnitude spread on the flat part of the SGB. We interpret this as empirical evidence for an age spread. We have identified four distinct stellar groups within the SGB region: (i) an old, metal-poor group ([Fe/H]~-1.7); (ii) an old, metal-rich group ([Fe/H]~-1.1); (iii) a young (up to 4--5 Gyr younger than the old component) metal-poor group ([Fe/H]~-1.7); (iv) a young, intermediate-metallicity ([Fe/H]~-1.4) group, on average 1--2 Gyr younger than the old metal-poor population, and with an age spread that we cannot properly quantify with the present sample. In addition, a group of SGB stars are spread between the intermediate-metallicity and metal-rich branches of the SGB. The spread in age within each population establishes that the progenitor of Omega Cen system must have had a composite nature.

Updated Electron-Conduction Opacities: The Impact on Low-Mass Stellar Models

We review the theory of electron-conduction opacity, a fundamental ingredient in the computation of low-mass stellar models; shortcomings and limitations of the existing calculations used in stellar evolution are discussed. We then present new determinations of the electron-conduction opacity in stellar conditions for an arbitrary chemical composition, that improve over previous works and, most importantly, cover the whole parameter space relevant to stellar evolution models (i.e., both the regime of partial and high electron degeneracy). A detailed comparison with the currently used tabulations is also performed. The impact of our new opacities on the evolution of low-mass stars is assessed by computing stellar models along both the H- and He-burning evolutionary phases, as well as Main Sequence models of very low-mass stars and white dwarf cooling tracks.

Short-Period Variables in the Local Group Dwarf Galaxies Tucana and LGS3

We present preliminary results concerning the search for short-period variable stars in Tucana and LGS3 based on very deep HST/ACS imaging. In the fraction of the observed field we studied in each galaxy, a total of 133 and 30 variables were found, respectively. For Tucana, we identified 76 of them as RR Lyrae (RRL) stars pulsating in the fundamental mode (RRab) and 32 in the first-overtone mode (RRc), as well as 2 anomalous Cepheids (AC). The mean period of the RRab and RRc is 0.59 and 0.35 days, respectively. In the case of LGS3, we found 24 RRab and 4 RRc, with mean periods 0.61and 0.39 days, respectively, plus two candidate ACs. These values place both galaxies in the Oosterhoff gap.
