A Next-Generation Liquid Xenon Observatory for Dark Matter and Neutrino Physics

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

Supernova Model Discrimination with Hyper-Kamiokande

Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

String cosmology in Bianchi I space-time

Some cosmological solutions of massive strings are obtained in Bianchi I space-time following the techniques used by Letelier and Stachel. A class of solutions corresponds to string cosmology associated with/without a magnetic field and the other class consists of pure massive strings, obeying the Takabayashi equation of state.

Bianchi II, VIII, and IX viscous fluid cosmology

In this paper we study the exact solutions for a viscous fluid distribution in Bianchi II, VIII, and IX models. The metric is simplified by assuming a relationship between the coefficients and the metric tensor. Solutions are obtained in two special cases: in one, an additional assumption is made where the matter density and the expansion scalar have a definite relation and in the other a barotropic equation of state between the matter density and the thermodynamic pressure is assumed. While the Bianchi II solutions are already found in the literature the other two classes of solutions are apparently new.

Search for a viable nucleus-nucleus potential for heavy-ion nuclear reactions

We have constructed an empirical formulae for the fusion and interaction barriers using experimental values available till date. The fusion barriers so obtained have been compared with different model predictions based on the proximity, Woods-Saxon and double folding potentials along with several empirical formulas, time dependent Hartree-Fock theories, and the experimental results. The comparison allows us to find the best model, which is nothing but the present empirical formula only. Most remarkably, the fusion barrier and radius show excellent consonance with the experimental findings for the reactions meant for synthesis of the superheavy elements also. Furthermore, it is seen that substitution of the predicted fusion barrier and radius in classic Wong formula [C. Wong, Phys. Rev. Lett. {31}, 766 (1973)] for the total fusion cross sections satisfies very well with the experiments. Similarly, current interaction barrier predictions have also been compared well with a few experimental results available and Bass potential model meant for the interaction barrier predictions. Importantly, the present formulae for the fusion as well as interaction barrier will have practical implications in carrying out the physics research near the Coulomb barrier energies. Furthermore, present fusion barrier and radius provide us a good nucleus-nucleus potential useful for numerous theoretical applications.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment -- Snowmass LOI

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Probabilistic Prediction of Geomagnetic Storms and the K$_{\textrm{p}}$ Index

Geomagnetic activity is often described using summary indices to summarize the likelihood of space weather impacts, as well as when parameterizing space weather models. The geomagnetic index $\text{K}_\text{p}$ in particular, is widely used for these purposes. Current state-of-the-art forecast models provide deterministic $\text{K}_\text{p}$ predictions using a variety of methods -- including empirically-derived functions, physics-based models, and neural networks -- but do not provide uncertainty estimates associated with the forecast. This paper provides a sample methodology to generate a 3-hour-ahead $\text{K}_\text{p}$ prediction with uncertainty bounds and from this provide a probabilistic geomagnetic storm forecast. Specifically, we have used a two-layered architecture to separately predict storm ($\text{K}_\text{p}\geq 5^-$) and non-storm cases. As solar wind-driven models are limited in their ability to predict the onset of transient-driven activity we also introduce a model variant using solar X-ray flux to assess whether simple models including proxies for solar activity can improve the predictions of geomagnetic storm activity with lead times longer than the L1-to-Earth propagation time. By comparing the performance of these models we show that including operationally-available information about solar irradiance enhances the ability of predictive models to capture the onset of geomagnetic storms and that this can be achieved while also enabling probabilistic forecasts.

QCD Challenges from pp to A-A Collisions

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Quasi-$γ$ band in $^{\text{114}}$Te

The low-lying non-yrast states in $^{114}$Te have been investigated using the Indian National Gamma Array through the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{112}$Sn($^{4}$He, 2n) at a beam energy of 37 MeV. Eight new $γ$-transitions have been placed in the level scheme to establish the quasi-$γ$ band in this nucleus. Spin and parity of several excited states have been assigned from the present spectroscopy measurements. The comparison of experimental results on the observed bands with the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) confirming the existence of the quasi-$γ$ band structure in the $^{114}$Te nucleus.

A new probability model with support on unit interval: Structural properties, regression of bounded response and applications

A new distribution on (0, 1), generalized Log-Lindley distribution, is proposed by extending the Log-Lindley distribution. This new distribution is shown to be a weighted Log-Lindley distribution. Important probabilistic and statistical properties have been derived. An interesting characterization of the weighted distribution in terms of Kullback-Liebler distance and weighted entropy has also been obtained. A useful result in insurance for the distorted premium principal is presented and verified with numerical calculations. New regression models for bounded responses based on this distribution and their application is illustrated by considering modeling a real life data on risk management and another data set on outpatient health expenditure in comparison with beta regression and Log-Lindley regression models. Much better fits for both data sets justify the relevance of the new distribution in statistical modeling and analysis. Furthermore this generalization, apart from adding flexibility for modelling, retains the compactness and tractability of statistical quantities required for statistical analysis, which is a feature of the Log-Lindley distribution. Thus, the generalized Log-Lindley distribution should be a useful addition to statistical models for practitioners.

Balakrishnan Alpha Skew Normal Distribution: Properties and Applications

In this paper a new type of alpha skew distribution is proposed under Balakrishnan Mechanism and some of its related distributions are investigated. The moments and distributional properties are also studied. Suitability of the proposed distribution is tested by conducting data fitting experiments and model adequacy is checked via AIC, BIC in comparison with some related distributions. Likelihood ratio test is carried out to discriminate between normal and proposed distribution.

Weakly Bound Neutron-Rich Nuclei and Cosmic Phenomena

The single particle and bulk properties of the neutron-rich nuclei constrain fundamental issues in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics like the limits of existence of quantum many body systems (atomic nuclei), the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, neutron star, nucleosynthesis, evolution of stars, neutron star merging etc.. The state of the art of Coulomb breakup of the neutron-rich nuclei has been used to explore those properties. Unambiguous information on detailed components of the ground-state wave-function along with quantum numbers of the valence neutron of the nuclei have been obtained from the measurement of threshold strength along with the $γ$-rays spectra of the core following Coulomb breakup. The shape of this threshold strength is a finger-print of the quantum numbers of the nucleon. We investigated the ground-state properties of the neutron-rich Na, Mg, Al nuclei around N $\sim$ 20 using this method at GSI, Darmstadt. Very clear evidence has been observed for melting and merging of long cherished magic shell gaps at N = 20, 28. The evanescent neutron-rich nuclei imprint their existence in stellar explosive scenarios (r-process etc.). Coulomb dissociation (CD) is one of the important indirect measurements of the capture cross-section which may provide valuable input to the model for star evolution process, particularly the r-process. Some valuable bulk properties of the neutron-rich nuclei like the density dependent symmetry energy, neutron skin etc. play a key role in understanding cosmic phenomena and these properties have been studied via electromagnetic excitation. Preliminary results of electromagnetic excitation of the neutron-rich nucleus, $^{32}$Mg are presented.

Thermonuclear Supernovae: Prospecting in the Age of Time-Domain and Multi-Wavelength Astronomy

We show how new and upcoming advances in the age of time-domain and multi-wavelength astronomy will open up a new venue to probe the diversity of SN~Ia. We discuss this in the context of the ELT (ESO), as well as space based instrument such as James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). As examples we demonstrate how the power of very early observations, within hours to days after the explosion, and very late-time observations, such as light curves and mid-infrared spectra beyond 3 years, can be used to probe the link to progenitors and explosion scenarios. We identify the electron-capture cross sections of Cr, Mn, and Ni/Co as one of the limiting factors we will face in the future.

$ \boldsymbolγ $-vibration in $^{198}$Hg

Low lying states of $^{198}$Hg have been investigated via $^{197}$Au($^{7}$Li, $ α$2n$ γ$)$ ^{198} $Hg reaction at E$ _{\text{beam}} $ = 33 MeV and 38 MeV and the members of $ γ$-vibrational band have been identified. Results are compared with the systematic of this mass region and found in agreement. Observed band structures have been interpreted using the theoretical framework of microscopic triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach and it is shown that TPSM results are in fair agreement with the observed energies.

Long term X-ray variability characteristics of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE~J1034+396

We present the results of our study of the long term X-ray variability characteristics of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396. We use data obtained from the AstroSat satellite along with the light curves obtained from XMM-Newton and Swift-XRT. We use the 0.3 - 7.0 keV and 3 - 20 keV data, respectively, from the SXT and the LAXPC of AstroSat. The X-ray spectra in the 0.3 - 20 keV region are well fit with a model consisting of a power-law and a soft excess described by a thermal-Compton emission with a large optical depth, consistent with the earlier reported results. We have examined the X-ray light curves in the soft and hard X-ray bands of SXT and LAXPC, respectively, and find that the variability is slightly larger in the hard band. To investigate the variability characteristics of this source at different time scales, we have used X-ray light curves obtained from XMM-Newton data (200 s to 100 ks range) and Swift-XRT data (1 day to 100 day range) and find that there are evidences to suggest that the variability sharply increases at longer time scales. We argue that the mass of the black hole in RE J1034+396 is likely to be $\sim$3 $\times$ 10$^6$ M$_\odot$, based on the similarity of the observed QPO to the high frequency QPO seen in the Galactic black hole binary, GRS 1915+105.

Non-linear Thermoelastic Analysis of an Anisotropic Rectangular Plate

Three-dimensional thermoelastic analysis in presence of electro magnetic field is investigated of a rectangular plate. In the context of Green-Naghdi model-II, fractional order energy equation is adopted for a rotating anisotropic rectangular plate which is subjected to simply supported and isothermal on its four lateral edges. Normal mode analysis is adopted to the governing equations to formulate a Vector-matrix differential equation. The analytical closed form solution of the Vector-matrix differential equation is obtained for the physical parameters using eigen value approach methodology. Numerical results are represented graphically with a sinusoidal spatial variations of the stress applied on the top surface of the plate.

A new type of RPC with very low resistive material

There are several working groups that are currently working on high rate RPC's using different materials such as Si-based Ceramics, Low-resistive Glass, low-resistive bakelite etc. A new type of single gap RPC has been fabricated using very low-resistive carbon-loaded PTFE material to compete with all these other groups and materials. In terms of bulk resistivity, this material is the lowest and should in principle be able to work at the highest rates, provided the material can withstand working bias and radiation. The efficiency and noise rate of the RPC are measured with cosmic rays. The detail method of fabrication and first experimental results are presented.
