Parametrization of the quark mixing matrix involving its eigenvalues

A parametrization of the $3\times 3$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, $V$, is presented in which the parameters are the eigenvalues and the components of its eigenvectors. In this parametrization, the small departure of the experimentally determined $V$ from being moduli symmetric (i.e. $|V_{ij}|=|V_{ji}|$) is controlled by the small difference between two of the eigenvalues. In case, any two eigenvalues are equal, one obtains a moduli symmetric $V$ depending on only three parameters. Our parametrization gives very good fits to the available data including CP-violation. Our value of $\sin 2β\approx 0.7$ and other parameters associated with the ` unitarity triangle' $V_{11}V_{13}^{*}+V_{21}V_{23}^{*}V_{31}V_{33}^{*}=0$ are in good agreement with data and other analyses.

The Schwinger SU(3) construction - I: Multiplicity problem and relation to induced representations

The Schwinger oscillator operator representation of SU(3) is analysed with particular reference to the problem of multiplicity of irreducible representations. It is shown that with the use of an $Sp(2,R)$ unitary representation commuting with the SU(3) representation, the infinity of occurrences of each SU(3) irreducible representation can be handled in complete detail. A natural `generating representation' for SU(3), containing each irreducible representation exactly once, is identified within a subspace of the Schwinger construction; and this is shown to be equivalent to an induced representation of SU(3).

The Schwinger SU(3) Construction - II: Relations between Heisenberg-Weyl and SU(3) Coherent States

The Schwinger oscillator operator representation of SU(3), studied in a previous paper from the representation theory point of view, is analysed to discuss the intimate relationships between standard oscillator coherent state systems and systems of SU(3) coherent states. Both SU(3) standard coherent states, based on choice of highest weight vector as fiducial vector, and certain other specific systems of generalised coherent states, are found to be relevant. A complete analysis is presented, covering all the oscillator coherent states without exception, and amounting to SU(3) harmonic analysis of these states.

Predictions for the unitarity triangle angles in a new parametrization

A new approach to the parametrization of the CKM matrix, $V$, is considered in which $V$ is written as a linear combination of the unit matrix $I$ and a non-diagonal matrix $U$ which causes intergenerational-mixing, that is $V=\cosθI+i\sinθU$. Such a $V$ depends on 3 real parameters including the parameter $θ$. It is interesting that a value of $θ=π/4$ is required to fit the available data on the CKM-matrix including CP-violation. Predictions of this fit for the angles $α$, $β$ and $γ$ for the unitarity triangle corresponding to $V_{11}V^*_{13} + V_{21} V^*_{23} +V_{31}V^*_{33} =0$, are given. For $θ$=$π/4$, we obtain $α=88.46^\circ$, $β=45.046^\circ$ and $γ=46.5^\circ$. These values are just about in agreement, within errors, with the present data. It is very interesting that the unitarity triangle is expected to be approximately a right-angled, isosceles triangle. Our prediction $\sin 2β= 1$ is in excellent agreement with the value $0.99\pm 0.15\pm 0.05$ reported by the Belle collaboration at the Lepton-Photon 2001 meeting.

Aspects of mutually unbiased bases in odd prime power dimensions

We rephrase the Wootters-Fields construction [Ann. Phys., {\bf 191}, 363 (1989)] of a full set of mutually unbiased bases in a complex vector space of dimensions $N=p^r$, where $p$ is an odd prime, in terms of the character vectors of the cyclic group $G$ of order $p$. This form may be useful in explicitly writing down mutually unbiased bases for $N=p^r$.

Bargmann invariants and off-diagonal geometric phases for multi-level quantum systems -- a unitary group approach

We investigate the geometric phases and the Bargmann invariants associated with a multi-level quantum systems. In particular, we show that a full set of `gauge-invariant' objects for an $n$-level system consists of $n$ geometric phases and ${1/2}(n-1)(n-2)$ algebraically independent 4-vertex Bargmann invariants. In the process of establishing this result we develop a canonical form for U(n) matrices which is useful in its own right. We show that the recently discovered `off-diagonal' geometric phases [N. Manini and F. Pistolesi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 8, 3067 (2000)] can be completely analysed in terms of the basic building blocks developed in this work. This result liberates the off-diagonal phases from the assumption of adiabaticity used in arriving at them.

Limits to squeezing in the degenerate OPO

We develop a systematic theory of quantum fluctuations in the driven parametric oscillator (OPO), including the region near threshold. This allows us to treat the limits imposed by nonlinearities to quantum squeezing and noise reduction, in this non-equilibrium quantum phase-transition. In particular, we compute the squeezing spectrum near threshold, and calculate the optimum value. We find that the optimal noise reduction occurs at different driving fields, depending on the ratio of damping rates. The largest spectral noise reductions are predicted to occur with a very high-Q second-harmonic cavity. Our analytic results agree well with stochastic numerical simulations. We also compare the results obtained in the positive-P representation, as a fully quantum mechanical calculation, with the truncated Wigner phase space equation, also known as semiclassical theory.

A Measure of Stregth of an Unextendible Product Basis

A notion of strength of an unextendible product basis is introduced and a quantitative measure for it is suggested with a view to providing an indirect measure for the bound entanglement of formation of the bound entangled mixed state associated with an unextendible product basis.

Parametrizing the mixing matrix : A unified approach

A unified approach to parametrization of the mixing matrix for $N$ generations is developed. This approach not only has a clear geometrical underpinning but also has the advantage of being economical and recursive and leads in a natural way to the known phenomenologically useful parametrizations of the mixing matrix.

Generalised coherent states and the diagonal representation for operators

We consider the problem of existence of the diagonal representation for operators in the space of a family of generalized coherent states associated with an unitary irreducible representation of a (compact) Lie group. We show that necessary and sufficient conditions for the possibility of such a representation can be obtained by combining Clebsch-Gordan theory and the reciprocity theorems associated with induced unitary group representation. Applications to several examples involving $SU(2),$ $SU(3),$ and the Heisenberg-Weyl group are presented, showing that there are simple examples of generalized coherent states which do not meet these conditions. Our results are relevant for phase-space description of quantum mechanics and quantum state reconstruction problems.

Congruences and Canonical Forms for a Positive Matrix: Application to the Schweinler-Wigner Extremum Principle

It is shown that a $N\times N$ real symmetric [complex hermitian] positive definite matrix $V$ is congruent to a diagonal matrix modulo a pseudo-orthogonal [pseudo-unitary] matrix in $SO(m,n)$ [ $SU(m,n)$], for any choice of partition $N=m+n$. It is further shown that the method of proof in this context can easily be adapted to obtain a rather simple proof of Williamson's theorem which states that if $N$ is even then $V$ is congruent also to a diagonal matrix modulo a symplectic matrix in $Sp(N,{\cal R})$ [$Sp(N,{\cal C})$]. Applications of these results considered include a generalization of the Schweinler-Wigner method of `orthogonalization based on an extremum principle' to construct pseudo-orthogonal and symplectic bases from a given set of linearly independent vectors.

Quantum phase space distributions in thermofield dynamics

It is shown that the the quantum phase space distributions corresponding to a density operator $ρ$ can be expressed, in thermofield dynamics, as overlaps between the state $\mid ρ>$ and "thermal" coherent states. The usefulness of this approach is brought out in the context of a master equation describing a nonlinear oscillator for which exact expressions for the quantum phase distributions for an arbitrary initial condition are derived.

Algebraic Shape Invariant Models

Motivated by the shape invariance condition in supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we develop an algebraic framework for shape invariant Hamiltonians with a general change of parameters. This approach involves nonlinear generalizations of Lie algebras. Our work extends previous results showing the equivalence of shape invariant potentials involving translational change of parameters with standard $SO(2,1)$ potential algebra for Natanzon type potentials.

A new orthogonalization procedure with an extremal property

Various methods of constructing an orthonomal set out of a given set of linearly independent vectors are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the Gram-Schmidt and the Schweinler-Wigner orthogonalization procedures. A new orthogonalization procedure which, like the Schweinler- Wigner procedure, is democratic and is endowed with an extremal property is suggested.

Stochastic Diagrams for Critical Point Spectra

A new technique for calculating the time-evolution, correlations and steady state spectra for nonlinear stochastic differential equations is presented. To illustrate the method, we consider examples involving cubic nonlinearities in an N-dimensional phase-space. These serve as a useful paradigm for describing critical point phase transitions in numerous equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems. The technique presented here is not perturbative. It consists in developing the stochastic variable as a power series in time, and using this to compute the short time expansion for the correlation functions. This, in turn, is extrapolated to large times and Fourier transformed to obtain the spectrum. A stochastic diagram technique is developed to facilitate computation of the coefficients of the relevant power series expansion. Two different types of long-time extrapolation technique, involving either simple exponentials or logarithmic rational approximations, are evaluated for third-order diagrams. The analytical results thus obtained are compared with numerical simulations, together with exact results available in special cases. The agreement is excellent in the neighborhood of the critical point. Finally, we emphasize that the technique is also applicable to more general stochastic problems involving spatial variation in addition to temporal variation.

Jack polynomials, generalized binomial coefficients and polynomial solutions of the generalized Laplace's equation

We discuss the symmetric homogeneous polynomial solutions of the generalized Laplace's equation which arises in the context of the Calogero-Sutherland model on a line. The solutions are expressed as linear combinations of Jack polynomials and the constraints on the coefficients of expansion are derived. These constraints involve generalized binomial coefficients defined through Jack polynomials. Generalized binomial coefficients for partitions of $k$ upto $k=6$ are tabulated.
