The NOvA Test Beam Experiment

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment designed to study the neutrino mixing parameters, mass ordering, and CP violation in the lepton sector. A key component of the success of the experiment is a robust understanding of the systematic uncertainties associated with detector response and calibration. To address this, NOvA deployed a Test Beam experiment at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility, which collected data from April 2019 through July 2022. The NOvA Test Beam experiment used a 30-ton segmented liquid scintillator detector functionally identical to the NOvA Near and Far Detectors to analyze tagged particles produced from p-Cu collisions, with instrumentation capable of selecting and identifying electrons, muons, pions, kaons, and protons with momentum ranging from 0.4-1.5GeV/c. Analysis of the collected data provides a better understanding of the largest systematic uncertainties impacting NOvA's analyses, which include the detector response, energy calibration, and hadronic and electromagnetic energy resolutions.

NOvA Dual-Baseline Search for Active-to-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations using Neutrino- and Antineutrino-Enriched Samples

We report a search for neutrino oscillations to sterile neutrinos in the NOvA detectors under a model with three active and one sterile neutrinos. This search simultaneously fits data in the two NOvA detectors and is the first from NOvA to use both neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams, with exposures of $26.61\times10^{20}$ and $12.50\times10^{20}$ protons on target, respectively. There is no evidence for sterile neutrinos in the data and we are able to exclude regions of parameter space that were allowed by previous experiments, including most of the allowed region reported by IceCube.

Neutron detector response modeling in NOvA

Neutrons can present a significant challenge for neutrino experiments in which energy reconstruction is critical. With the ability to escape detection completely and with a weak correlation between their kinetic energy and any eventual energy deposition, it is difficult to fully account for neutrons produced in neutrino interactions. This in turn leads to significant model dependence when evaluating neutron-related systematic uncertainties. The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a high-statistics sample of antineutrino data collected by its near detector. We report an excess relative to data of simulated neutron candidates with low energy depositions when using standard Geant4 physics lists. The simulation excess is traced to an overabundance of secondary photons produced from interactions of neutrons with kinetic energy greater than \SI{20}{\mega\eV}. Improved agreement with data is obtained by applying the data-driven neutron-on-carbon \menate model for neutrons between \SI{20}{\mega\eV} and ${\sim}$\SI{100}{\mega\eV}. With \menate, the residual oversimulation is more uniform across the calorimetric neutron energy spectrum, suggesting possible overproduction of primary neutrons by the GENIE neutrino interaction generator. These results motivate the adoption of \menate-supplemented Geant4 simulation as the nominal simulation in the production of future \nova simulation.

An unconditionally stable space-time isogeometric method for a biharmonic wave equation

This work presents a space-time isogeometric analysis of biharmonic wave problem, in contrast to the more common application of space-time methods to second order wave equations. We first establish the unique solvability of the continuous space-time variational formulation. In order to obtain $H^2$- conforming discretization of the biharmonic wave equation, we consider globally smooth B-spline functions having continuity higher than $C^0$. We prove that the resulting space-time discrete formulation is stable under a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition. Furthermore, we propose a stabilized formulation, achieved by adding a non-consistent penalty term, which yields unconditional stability. Exploiting the tensor product structure, an efficient direct solver is also provided for solving the linear system arising from the discrete formulation. A few numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the stability and convergence properties of the proposed scheme as well as the efficiency of the proposed solver.

A Narrowband Technosignature Search Toward the Hycean Candidate K2-18b Using the VLA and MeerKAT

K2-18b, a sub-Neptune exoplanet located in the habitable zone of its host star, has emerged as an important target for atmospheric characterization and assessments of potential habitability. Motivated by recent interpretations of JWST observations suggesting a hydrogen-rich atmosphere consistent with Hycean-world scenarios, we conducted a coordinated, multi-epoch search for narrowband radio technosignatures using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array equipped with the COSMIC backend and the MeerKAT telescope with the BLUSE backend. Our observations span frequencies from 544MHz to 9.8GHz and include multiple epochs that cover at least one full orbital period of the planet. In this work, we outline, create, and apply a comprehensive post-processing framework that incorporates observatory-informed RFI masking, drift-rate filtering based on the expected dynamics of the K2-18 system, multibeam spatial discrimination, primary and secondary transit filtering (when applicable), and SNR-based excision of weak and strong spurious signals. Across all bands and epochs, no signals consistent with an astrophysical or artificial origin were identified at a limit of 10^12 to 10^13W. These non-detections allow us to place upper limits on the presence of persistent, isotropic narrowband transmitters within the K2-18 system, providing the first interferometric technosignature constraints for a Hycean-planet candidate. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of coordinated multiepoch interferometric searches and establish a methodological framework for future technosignature studies of nearby potentially habitable exoplanets.

Precision measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters with 10 years of data from the NOvA experiment

This Letter reports measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and electron-neutrino appearance and the corresponding antineutrino processes between the two NOvA detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. These measurements use a dataset with double the neutrino mode beam exposure that was previously analyzed, along with improved simulation and analysis techniques. A joint fit to these samples in the three-flavor paradigm results in the most precise single-experiment constraint on the atmospheric neutrino mass splitting, $\Delta m^2_{32}= 2.431^{+0.036}_{-0.034} (-2.479^{+0.036}_{-0.036}) \times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ if the mass ordering is normal (inverted). In both orderings, a region close to maximal mixing with $\sin^2 \theta_{23}=0.55^{+0.02}_{-0.06}$ is preferred. The NOvA data show a mild preference for the normal mass ordering with a Bayes factor of 2.4 (corresponding to 70% of the posterior probability), indicating that the normal ordering is 2.4 times more probable than the inverted ordering. When incorporating a 2D $\Delta m^2_{32}\text{--}\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$ constraint based on Daya Bay data, this preference strengthens to a Bayes factor of 6.6 (87%).

Search for $CP$-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity ($CP$) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from $ν_μ(\barν_μ)\rightarrowν_μ(\barν_μ)$ and $ν_μ(\barν_μ)\rightarrowν_{e}(\barν_{e})$ oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{eμ}$ and $\varepsilon_{eτ}$. With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be $|\varepsilon_{eμ}| \, \lesssim 0.3$ and $|\varepsilon_{eτ}| \, \lesssim 0.4$. A degeneracy at $|\varepsilon_{eτ}| \, \approx 1.8$ is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard $CP$ phase $δ_{\tiny\text{CP}}$.

Expanding neutrino oscillation parameter measurements in NOvA using a Bayesian approach

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that measures oscillations in charged-current $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_μ$ (disappearance) and $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_{e}$ (appearance) channels, and their antineutrino counterparts, using neutrinos of energies around 2 GeV over a distance of 810 km. In this work we reanalyze the dataset first examined in our previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 106, 032004 (2022)] using an alternative statistical approach based on Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo. We measure oscillation parameters consistent with the previous results. We also extend our inferences to include the first NOvA measurements of the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the Jarlskog invariant. We use these results to quantify the strength of our inferences about CP violation, as well as to examine the effects of constraints from short-baseline measurements of $θ_{13}$ using antineutrinos from nuclear reactors when making NOvA measurements of $θ_{23}$. Our long-baseline measurement of $θ_{13}$ is also shown to be consistent with the reactor measurements, supporting the general applicability and robustness of the PMNS framework for neutrino oscillations.

Evidence of Ferromagnetic Clusters and Griffiths Singularity in Magnetic Weyl Semimetal Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $

Cobalt based sulphides of compositional formula Co$ _{3} $A$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $ (A = Sn and In) are endowed with frustrated kagome lattice structure and a plethora of novel phenomena determined from the topological band structure. Here-in, we report on the detailed exploration of anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystals of ferromagnetic compound Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $ under magnetic field $H$ applied along the c-axis $(H\parallel c)$ and the ab-plane $(H\parallel ab)$. A low temperature clustered-glassy magnetic behaviour is revealed in field-cooled and zero field-cooled magnetization and memory effect measurement protocols. The sharp downturn and non-linearity observed in the inverse susceptibility above the critical temperature $T _{\text{C}} $ in the paramagnetic region corroborates to the presence of short-range ferromagnetic clusters above $ T _{\text{C}} $ in Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $. The deviation from linear Curie-Weiss behaviour in the paramagnetic state signifies the strong Griffiths singularity in the material. The slow spin dynamics behaviour and zero spontaneous magnetization above $ T _{\text{C}} $ give an evidence of Griffiths phase owing to the ferromagnetic clusters. The Arrott plots derived from magnetization reveal convex type curvature at low fields and linear positive behavior in the high field region, confirming the second order magnetic phase transition in Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $. The Takahashi spin fluctuation theory analysis provides sufficient evidence for itinerant ferromagnetism in Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $. A large magneto-crystalline anisotropy concomitant with a high anisotropy field suggests the dominance of strong spin orbit coupling phenomenon. Our experimental results emphasize an intuitive understanding of the complex nature of magnetism present in Co-based shandite systems.

Magneto-dielectric coupling and non-ergodic electrical behaviour in hexagonal Sr0.6Ba0.4MnO3 via local strain driven magnetic ordering

The crystal structure of hexagonal-Sr0.6Ba0.4MnO3 allows various competing superexchange interactions, leading to intriguing magnetic properties. Local structural changes modify overlapping between Mn and oxygen ions with temperature. Calculations based on our model spin-Hamiltonian reveal that the dominant linear antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the oxygen-linked Mn4+ ions results in short range correlations (SRC), manifesting a smooth drop in magnetization below 325K. Dominance of superexchange interaction changes its allegiance towards the non-linear oxygen-linked Mn-O-Mn interactions, onsetting long-range correlations (LRC) below 225K. Below the SRC-LRC crossover temperature, electrical response arising from the interacting dipoles exhibits power-law divergent behaviour of relaxation time, upon cooling. Non-ergodic character of the dipole-cluster glass state is examined via the indispensable aging and rejuvenation effects, similar to the spin glasses. Competitive-frustration among spin-exchange and local-strain is reckoned as responsible for the electrical glass origin.

Evidence of topological gap opening in the surface state of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by proximity to a magnetic insulator

Topological insulators are bulk insulators with exotic surface states, protected under time-reversal symmetry, that hold promise in observing many exciting condensed-matter phenomena. In this report, we show that by having a topological insulator (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) in proximity to a magnetic insulator (EuS), a metal-to-insulator transition in the surface state, attributed to opening of an exchange gap, can be observed whose properties are tunable using bottom gate voltage and external magnetic field. Our study provides evidence of gate-controlled enhanced interface magnetism with the signature of half-integer quantum Hall effect when the Fermi level is tuned into the exchange gap. These results pave the way for using magnetic proximity effect in developing topological electronic devices.

Ultrafast enhancement of ferromagnetic spin exchange induced by ligand-to-metal charge transfer

Directly modifying spin exchange energies in a magnetic material with light can enable ultrafast control of its magnetic states. Current approaches rely on tuning charge hopping amplitudes that mediate exchange by optically exciting either virtual or real charge-transfer transitions (CT) between magnetic sites. Here we show that when exchange is mediated by a non-magnetic ligand, it can be substantially enhanced by optically exciting a real CT transition from the ligand to magnetic site, introducing lower order virtual hopping contributions. We demonstrate sub-picosecond enhancement in a superexchange dominated ferromagnet CrSiTe3 through this mechanism using phase-resolved coherent phonon spectroscopy. This technique can also be applied in the paramagnetic phase to disentangle light induced exchange modification from other ultrafast effects that alter the magnetization. This protocol can potentially be broadly applied to engineer thermally inaccessible spin Hamiltonians in superexchange dominated magnets.

Probing pair-breaking mechanisms in proximity-induced hybrid superconducting interfaces

Understanding depairing effects in a hybrid-superconducting interface utilizing high spin-orbit materials such as topological insulators or 1D semiconducting nanowires is becoming an important research topic in the study of proximity-induced superconductivity. Experimentally, proximity-induced superconductivity is found to suppress at much lower magnetic fields compared to the superconducting layer without a good understanding of its cause. Here, we provide a phenomenological tool to characterize different pair-breaking mechanisms, the ones that break or preserve time reversal symmetry, and show how they affect the differential tunneling conductance response. Importantly, we probe the properties of the SC layer at the hybrid interface and observe conductance peak pinning at zero bias in a larger field range with eventual signs of weak peak splitting. Further, the effect of varying the spin-orbit scattering and the Lande g-factor in tuning the conductance peaks show interesting trends.

Nature of Magnetoelectric coupling in corundum antiferromagnet Co4Ta2O9

We study the magnetocapacitance (MC) effect and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in spin-flop driven antiferromagnet Co4Ta2O9. The magnetocapacitance data at high magnetic fields are analyzed by phenomenological Ginzburg-landau theory of ferroelectromagnets and it is found that change in dielectric constant is proportional to the square of magnetization. The saturation polarization and magnetoelectric coupling are estimated to be 52microC/m2 and $γ$ = 1.4 x10-3 (emu/g)-2 respectively at 6 Tesla. Electric polarization is achieved below Neel temperature only when the sample is cooled in the presence of magnetic field and it is established that the ground state is non-ferroelectric implying that magnetic lattice does not lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking in Co4Ta2O9.

Exceptional magneto-electric coupling and spontaneous electric polarization in anti-ferromagnet Co4Nb2O9

Synthesis and extensive structural, pyroelectric, magnetic, dielectric and magneto-electric characterizations are reported for polycrystalline Co4Nb2O9 towards unraveling the multiferroic state especially in reference to the magnetic spin flop transition. Magnetic measurements confirm the Co4Nb2O9 becomes antiferromagnetic (AFM) at around 28 K but no clear evidence for spin-flop effect was found. Associated with the magnetic phase transition, a sharp peak in pyroelectric current indicates the appearance of the strong magneto-electric coupling below Neel temperature (TN) with a large coupling constant upto 17.8 uC/m^2T. Using temperature oscillation technique, we establish Co4Nb2O9 to be a genuine multiferroic with spontaneous electric polarization in the anti-ferromagnetic state.

Magnetic and Electronic Structure study of Fe/MgO/Fe/Co Multilayer Stack Deposited by E-Beam Evaporation

Present work investigates the magnetic and electronic structure of MgO/Fe/MgO/Fe/Co/Au multilayer stack grown on Si(100) substrates by electron beam evaporation method. X-ray diffraction study depicts polycrystalline nature of the multilayers. Results obtained from vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectra (NEXAFS) at Fe & Co L- and Mg & O K-edges are applied to understand the magnetic and electronic properties of this stack and its interface properties. While the spectral features of Fe L-edge spectrum recorded by surface sensitive total electron yield (TEY) mode shows the formation of FeOx at the Fe/MgO interface, the bulk sensitive total fluorescence yield (TFY), shows Fe in metallic nature. Co L-edge spectrum reveals the presence of metallic nature of cobalt in both TEY and TFY modes. Above results are well correlated with X-ray reflectometry.

Interesting thermomagnetic history effects in the antiferromagnetic state of SmMn_2Ge_2

We present results of magnetization measurements showing that the magnetic response of the antiferromagnetic state of SmMn_2Ge_2 depends on the path used in the field(H)-temperature(T) phase space to reach this state. Distinct signature of metastablity is observed in this antiferromagnetic state when obtained via field-cooling/field-warming paths. The isothermal M-H loops show lack of end-point memory, reminiscent of that seen in metastable vortex states near the field-induced first order phase transition in various type-II superconductors.

First order phase transition from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism in Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Al$_{0.04}$)$_2$

Taking the pseudobinary C15 Laves phase compound Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Al$_{0.04}$)$_2$ as a paradigm for studying a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition, we present interesting thermomagnetic history effects in magnetotransport as well as magnetisation measurements across this phase transition. A comparison is made with history effects observed across the ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in R$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ crystals.
