Hunting for the nature of the enigmatic narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples of gamma-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution.

Catalog of Long-Term Transient Sources in the First 10 Years of Fermi-LAT Data

We present the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalog of long-term $γ$-ray transient sources (1FLT). This comprises sources that were detected on monthly time intervals during the first decade of Fermi-LAT operations. The monthly time scale allows us to identify transient and variable sources that were not yet reported in other Fermi-LAT catalogs. The monthly datasets were analyzed using a wavelet-based source detection algorithm that provided the candidate new transient sources. The search was limited to the extragalactic regions of the sky to avoid the dominance of the Galactic diffuse emission at low Galactic latitudes. The transient candidates were then analyzed using the standard Fermi-LAT Maximum Likelihood analysis method. All sources detected with a statistical significance above 4$σ$ in at least one monthly bin were listed in the final catalog. The 1FLT catalog contains 142 transient $γ$-ray sources that are not included in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. Many of these sources (102) have been confidently associated with Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN): 24 are associated with Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars; 1 with a BL Lac object; 70 with Blazars of Uncertain Type; 3 with Radio Galaxies; 1 with a Compact Steep Spectrum radio source; 1 with a Steep Spectrum Radio Quasar; 2 with AGN of other types. The remaining 40 sources have no candidate counterparts at other wavelengths. The median $γ$-ray spectral index of the 1FLT-AGN sources is softer than that reported in the latest Fermi-LAT AGN general catalog. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that detection of the softest $γ$-ray emitters is less efficient when the data are integrated over year-long intervals.

A hybrid method for overcoming thermal shock of non-contact infrared thermometers

The non-contact infrared thermometer (NCIT) is an important basic tool for fever screening and self-health monitoring. However, it is susceptible to the thermal shock when working in a low temperature environment, which will cause a time-consuming and inaccurate human body temperature measurements. To overcome the effects of thermal shock, a hybrid temperature compensation method combining hardware and algorithm is proposed. Firstly, the principle of infrared temperature measurement is described and the influence of thermal shock on infrared thermometer is analyzed. Then, the hybrid temperature compensation scheme is constructed by mounting a heating ring on the infrared sensor shell, and using the proportional integral derivative (PID) algorithm and the pulse width modulation (PWM) technology to control it heating. In this way, the internal ambient temperature of infrared sensor can be raised rapidly closing to the external ambient temperature, and the stable outputs of the infrared sensor are also accelerated. Finally, some experiments are carried out in a laboratory. The results show that the proposed method can quickly and accurately measure the temperature of standard black body when the ambient temperatures are 5 , 15 and 25 Celsius respectively, the measurement error is only 0.2 Celsius , and the measurement time is less than 2 seconds. This study would be beneficial to improve performance of NCIT, especially the infrared ear thermometer.

SMAPGAN: Generative Adversarial Network Based Semi-Supervised Styled Map Tiles Generating Method

Traditional online map tiles, widely used on the Internet such as Google Map and Baidu Map, are rendered from vector data. Timely updating online map tiles from vector data, of which the generating is time-consuming, is a difficult mission. It is a shortcut to generate map tiles in time from remote sensing images, which can be acquired timely without vector data. However, this mission used to be challenging or even impossible. Inspired by image-to-image translation (img2img) techniques based on generative adversarial networks (GAN), we proposed a semi-supervised Generation of styled map Tiles based on Generative Adversarial Network (SMAPGAN) model to generate styled map tiles directly from remote sensing images. In this model, we designed a semi-supervised learning strategy to pre-train SMAPGAN on rich unpaired samples and fine-tune it on limited paired samples in reality. We also designed image gradient L1 loss and image gradient structure loss to generate a styled map tile with global topological relationships and detailed edge curves of objects, which are important in cartography. Moreover, we proposed edge structural similarity index (ESSI) as a metric to evaluate the quality of topological consistency between generated map tiles and ground truths. Experimental results present that SMAPGAN outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) works according to mean squared error, structural similarity index, and ESSI. Also, SMAPGAN won more approval than SOTA in the human perceptual test on the visual realism of cartography. Our work shows that SMAPGAN is potentially a new paradigm to produce styled map tiles. Our implementation of the SMAPGAN is available at https://github.com/imcsq/SMAPGAN.

First high-precision direct determination of the atomic mass of a superheavy nuclide

We present the first direct measurement of the atomic mass of a superheavy nuclide. Atoms of $^{257}$Db ($Z$=105) were produced online at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science using the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{208}$Pb($^{51}$V, 2n)$^{257}$Db. The gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II was used to suppress both the unreacted primary beam and some transfer products, prior to delivering the energetic beam of $^{257}$Db ions to a helium gas-filled ion stopping cell wherein they were thermalized. Thermalized $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ ions were then transferred to a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph for mass analysis. An alpha particle detector embedded in the ion time-of-flight detector allowed disambiguation of the rare $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ time-of-flight detection events from background by means of correlation with characteristic $α$-decays. The extreme sensitivity of this technique allowed a precision atomic mass determination from 11 events. The mass excess was determined to be $100\,063(231)_\textrm{stat}(132)_\textrm{sys}$~keV/c$^2$. Comparing to several mass models, we show the technique can be used to unambiguously determine the atomic number as $Z$=105 and should allow similar evaluations for heavier species in future work.

Search for three body pion decays $π^+{\to}l^+νX$

The three body pion decays $π^+{\rightarrow}l^+νX~(l=e,μ)$, where $X$ is a weakly interacting neutral boson, were searched for using the full data set from the PIENU experiment. An improved limit on $Γ(π^+{\to}e^+νX)/Γ(π^+{\to}μ^+ν_μ)$ in the mass range $0<m_X<120$ MeV/$c^2$ and a first result for $Γ(π^+{\to}μ^+νX)/Γ(π^+{\to}μ^+ν_μ)$ in the region $0<m_X<33.9$ MeV/$c^2$ were obtained. The Majoron-neutrino coupling model was also constrained using the current experimental result of the $π^+{\to}e^+ν_e(γ)$ branching ratio.

An ultralow-noise superconducting radio-frequency ion trap for frequency metrology with highly charged ions

We present a novel ultrastable superconducting radio-frequency (RF) ion trap realized as a combination of an RF cavity and a linear Paul trap. Its RF quadrupole mode at 34.52 MHz reaches a quality factor of $Q\approx2.3\times 10^5$ at a temperature of 4.1 K and is used to radially confine ions in an ultralow-noise pseudopotential. This concept is expected to strongly suppress motional heating rates and related frequency shifts which limit the ultimate accuracy achieved in advanced ion traps for frequency metrology. Running with its low-vibration cryogenic cooling system, electron beam ion trap and deceleration beamline supplying highly charged ions (HCI), the superconducting trap offers ideal conditions for optical frequency metrology with ionic species. We report its proof-of-principle operation as a quadrupole mass filter with HCI, and trapping of Doppler-cooled ${}^9\text{Be}^+$ Coulomb crystals.

Shape changes in the mirror nuclei $^{70}$Kr and $^{70}$Se

We studied the proton-rich $T_z=-1$ nucleus $^{70}$Kr through inelastic scattering at intermediate energies in order to extract the reduced transition probability, $B(E2;\;0^+ \rightarrow 2^+)$. Comparison with the other members of the $A=70$ isospin triplet, $^{70}$Br and $^{70}$Se, studied in the same experiment, shows a $3σ$ deviation from the expected linearity of the electromagnetic matrix elements as a function of $T_z$. At present, no established nuclear structure theory can describe this observed deviation quantitatively. This is the first violation of isospin symmetry at this level observed in the transition matrix elements. A heuristic approach may explain the anomaly by a shape change between the mirror nuclei $^{70}$Kr and $^{70}$Se contrary to the model predictions.

End-to-End UAV Simulation for Visual SLAM and Navigation

Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (v-SLAM) and navigation of multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in an unknown environment have grown in popularity for both research and education. However, due to the complex hardware setup, safety precautions, and battery constraints, extensive physical testing can be expensive and time-consuming. As an alternative solution, simulation tools lower the barrier to carry out the algorithm testing and validation before field trials. In this letter, we customize the ROS-Gazebo-PX4 simulator in deep and provide an end-to-end simulation solution for the UAV v-SLAM and navigation study. A set of localization, mapping, and path planning kits were also integrated into the simulation platform. In our simulation, various aspects, including complex environments and onboard sensors, can simultaneously interact with our navigation framework to achieve specific surveillance missions. In this end-to-end simulation, we achieved click and fly level autonomy UAV navigation. The source code is open to the research community.

Data-Driven Modeling of Electron Recoil Nucleation in PICO C$_3$F$_8$ Bubble Chambers

The primary advantage of moderately superheated bubble chamber detectors is their simultaneous sensitivity to nuclear recoils from WIMP dark matter and insensitivity to electron recoil backgrounds. A comprehensive analysis of PICO gamma calibration data demonstrates for the first time that electron recoils in C$_3$F$_8$ scale in accordance with a new nucleation mechanism, rather than one driven by a hot-spike as previously supposed. Using this semi-empirical model, bubble chamber nucleation thresholds may be tuned to be sensitive to lower energy nuclear recoils while maintaining excellent electron recoil rejection. The PICO-40L detector will exploit this model to achieve thermodynamic thresholds as low as 2.8 keV while being dominated by single-scatter events from coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering of solar neutrinos. In one year of operation, PICO-40L can improve existing leading limits from PICO on spin-dependent WIMP-proton coupling by nearly an order of magnitude for WIMP masses greater than 3 GeV c$^{-2}$ and will have the ability to surpass all existing non-xenon bounds on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon coupling for WIMP masses from 3 to 40 GeV c$^{-2}$.

$\boldsymbol{N=32}$ shell closure below calcium: Low-lying structure of $^{50}$Ar

Low-lying excited states in the $N=32$ isotope $^{50}$Ar were investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$^-$ state. The level scheme built using $γγ$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $sd-pf$ model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to $2^+$ states, while the previously proposed $4^+$ state could also correspond to a $2^+$ state.

Measuring Interstellar Delays of PSR J0613-0200 over 7 years, using the Large European Array for Pulsars

Using data from the Large European Array for Pulsars (LEAP), and the Effelsberg telescope, we study the scintillation parameters of the millisecond pulsar J0613-0200 over a 7 year timespan. The "secondary spectrum" -- the 2D power spectrum of scintillation -- presents the scattered power as a function of time delay, and contains the relative velocities of the pulsar, observer, and scattering material. We detect a persistent parabolic scintillation arc, suggesting scattering is dominated by a thin, anisotropic region. The scattering is poorly described by a simple exponential tail, with excess power at high delays; we measure significant, detectable scattered power at times out to $\sim 5 μs$, and measure the bulk scattering delay to be between 50 to 200\,ns with particularly strong scattering throughout 2013. These delays are too small to detect a change of the pulse profile shape, yet they would change the times-of-arrival as measured through pulsar timing. The arc curvature varies annually, and is well fit by a one-dimensional scattering screen $\sim 40\%$ of the way towards the pulsar, with a changing orientation during the increased scattering in 2013. Effects of uncorrected scattering will introduce time delays correlated over time in individual pulsars, and may need to be considered in gravitational wave analyses. Pulsar timing programs would benefit from simultaneously recording in a way that scintillation can be resolved, in order to monitor the variable time delays caused by multipath propagation.

Jump Markov Chains and Rejection-Free Metropolis Algorithms

We consider versions of the Metropolis algorithm which avoid the inefficiency of rejections. We first illustrate that a natural Uniform Selection Algorithm might not converge to the correct distribution. We then analyse the use of Markov jump chains which avoid successive repetitions of the same state. After exploring the properties of jump chains, we show how they can exploit parallelism in computer hardware to produce more efficient samples. We apply our results to the Metropolis algorithm, to Parallel Tempering, to a Bayesian model, to a two-dimensional ferromagnetic 4 x 4 Ising model, and to a pseudo-marginal MCMC algorithm.

The Radio Structure of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Mrk 783 with VLBA and e-MERLIN

In this paper, we present the analysis of new radio and optical observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 783. 1.6 GHz observations performed with the e-MERLIN interferometer confirm the presence of the diffuse emission previously observed. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) also detects the nuclear source both at 1.6 GHz (L-Band) and 5 GHz (C-band). While the L-band image shows only an unresolved core, the C-band image shows the presence of a partially resolved structure, at a position angle of 60°. The brightness temperature of the emission in both bands ($>10^6$ K) suggests that it is a pc-scale jet produced by the AGN. The relatively steep VLBA spectral index ($α_{VLBA} = 0.63\pm0.03$) is consistent with the presence of optically thin emission on milliarcsecond scales. Finally, we investigated two possible scenarios that can result in the misalignment between the kpc and pc-scale radio structure detected in the galaxy. We also analysed the optical morphology of the galaxy, which suggests that Mrk 783 underwent a merging in relatively recent times.

Pulsars with NenuFAR: backend and pipelines

NenuFAR (New extension in Nançay upgrading LoFAR) is a new radio telescope developed and built on the site of the Nançay Radio Observatory. It is designed to observe the largely unexplored frequency window from 10 to 85\,MHz, offering a high sensitivity across its full bandwidth. NenuFAR has started its "early science" operation in July 2019, with 58\% of its final collecting area being available. Pulsars are one of the major topics for the scientific exploitation of this frequency range and represent an important challenge in terms of instrumentation. Designing instrumentation at these frequencies is complicated by the need to compensate for the effects of both the interstellar medium and the ionosphere on the observed signal. Our real-time pipeline LUPPI (Low frequency Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrumentation) is able to cope with a high data rate and to provide real-time coherent de-dispersion down to the lowest frequencies reached by NenuFAR (10\,MHz). The full backend functionality is described, as well as the main pulsar observing modes (folded, single-pulse, waveform, and dynamic spectrum). This instrumentation allowed us to detect 172 pulsars in our first targeted search below 85\,MHz, including 10 millisecond pulsars (6 of which detected for the first time below 100 MHz). We also present some of the "early science" results of NenuFAR on pulsars: a high frequency resolution mapping of PSR B1919$+$21's emission profile and a detailed observation of single-pulse sub-structures from PSR~B0809$+$74 down to 16\,MHz, the high rate of giant-pulse emission from the Crab pulsar detected at 68.7\,MHz (43 events/min), and the illustration of the very good timing performance of the instrumentation, allowing us to study dispersion measure variations in great detail.

Radio morphology of southern narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies with Very Large Array observations

We present the results of new radio observations carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array C-configuration at 5.5 GHz for a sample of southern narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). This work increases the number of known radio-detected NLS1s in the southern hemisphere, and confirms that the radio emission of NLS1s is mainly concentrated in a central region at kpc-scale and only a few sources show diffuse emission. In radio-quiet NLS1s, the radio luminosity tends to be higher in steep-spectrum sources and be lower in flat-spectrum sources, which is opposite to radio-loud NLS1s. This may be because the radio emission of steep NLS1s is dominated by misaligned jets, AGN-driven outflows, or star formation superposing on a compact core. Instead the radio emission of flat NLS1s may be produced by a central core which has not yet developed radio jets and outflows. We discover new NLS1s harboring kpc-scale radio jets and confirm that a powerful jet does not require a large-mass black hole to be generated. We also find sources dominated by star formation. These NLS1s could be new candidates in investigating the radio emission of different mechanisms.

Shape coexistence revealed in the $N=Z$ isotope $^{72}$Kr through inelastic scattering

The $N=Z=36$ nucleus $^{72}$Kr has been studied by inelastic scattering at intermediate energies. Two targets, $^{9}$Be and $^{197}$Au, were used to extract the nuclear deformation length, $δ_\text{N}$, and the reduced $E2$ transition probability, $B(E2)$. The previously unknown non-yrast $2^+$ and $4^+$ states as well as a new candidate for the octupole $3^-$ state have been observed in the scattering on the Be target and placed in the level scheme based on $γ-γ$ coincidences. The second $2^+$ state was also observed in the scattering on the Au target and the $B(E2;\;2^+_2 \rightarrow 0^+_1)$ value could be determined for the first time. Analyzing the results in terms of a two-band mixing model shows clear evidence for a oblate-prolate shape coexistence and can be explained by a shape change from an oblate ground state to prolate deformed yrast band from the first $2^+$ state. This interpretation is corroborated by beyond mean field calculations using the Gogny D1S interaction.
