The role of random electric fields in relaxors

PbZr_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PZT) and Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PMN-$x$PT) are complex lead-oxide perovskites that display exceptional piezoelectric properties for pseudorhombohedral compositions near a tetragonal phase boundary. In PZT these compositions are ferroelectrics, but in PMN-xPT they are relaxors because the dielectric permittivity is frequency dependent and exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. We show that the nanoscale structure unique to PMN-xPT and other lead-oxide perovskite relaxors is absent in PZT and correlates with a greater than 100% enhancement of the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient in PMN-xPT relative to that in PZT. By comparing dielectric, structural, lattice dynamical, and piezoelectric measurements on PZT and PMN-xPT, two nearly identical compounds that represent weak and strong random electric field limits, we show that quenched (static) random fields establish the relaxor phase and identify the order parameter.

Magnetism in nanoparticle LaCoO3

LaCoO3 (LCO) nanoparticles were synthesized and their magnetic and structural properties were examined using SQUID magnetometery and neutron diffraction. The nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic long-range order beginning at T_C approximately 87K that persists to low temperatures. This behavior is contrasted with the ferromagnetism of bulk LCO, which also starts at T_C approximately 87K but is suppressed below a second transition at T_o approximately 37K, due to a structural phase transition. The ferromagnetism in both systems is attributed to the tensile stress from particle surfaces and impurity phase interfaces. This stress locally increases the Co-O-Co bond angle gamma, and competes with the thermal contraction of the lattice. It has recently been shown that LCO loses long-range ferromagnetic order when gamma decreases below the critical value gamma_c = 162.8 degrees. Consistent with this model, we show that gamma in nanoparticles remains larger than gamma_c at low temperatures, likely a consequence of all spins being in close proximity to surfaces or interfaces.

Deep, wide-field, global VLBI observations of the Hubble Deep Field North and Flanking Fields

Dust is commonly present in weakly radio emitting star-forming galaxies and this dust may obscure the signatures of accreting black holes in these objects. We aim to uncover weak active galactic nuclei, AGN, in the faint radio source population by means of deep high-resolution radio observations. VLBI observations with a world-wide array at unparallelled sensitivity are carried out to assess the nature of the faint radio source population in the Hubble Deep Field North and its flanking fields. Images of twelve compact, AGN-driven radio sources are presented. These represent roughly one quarter of the detectable faint radio source sample. Most, but not all of these low power AGN have X-ray detections. The majority of the faint radio source population must be star-forming galaxies. Faint AGN occur in a variety of (distant) host galaxies, and these are often accompanied by a dust-obscured starburst. Deep, high-resolution VLBI is a unique, powerful technique to assess the occurrence of faint AGN.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Pyrochlore Iridate Y2Ir2O7

Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic measurements were performed examining the 5d pyrochlore Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Temperature dependent measurements were performed between 3.4 K and 290 K, spanning the magnetic transition at 155 K. No sign of any structural or disorder induced phase transition was observed over the entire temperature range. In addition, no sign of magnetic long-range order was observed to within the sensitivity of the instrumentation. These measurements do not rule out long range magnetic order, but the neutron powder diffraction structural refinements do put an upper bound for the ordered iridium moment of $\sim$ 0.2 $μ_B /$Ir (for a magnetic structure with wave vector $Q \neq 0$) or $\sim$ 0.5 $μ_B /$Ir (for Q = 0).

Common Crystalline and Magnetic Structure of superconducting A2Fe4Se5

Single crystal neutron diffraction study has been performed on new superconductor A2Fe4Se5, where A = Cs, K, (Tl,Rb) and (Tl,K), and the same Fe vacancy ordered crystal structure and the same block checkerboard antiferromagne tic order recently discovered in the K2Fe4Se5 superconductor are observed. Thus, all known alkali metal and/or Tl intercalated iron selenide superconductors share common crystalline and magnetic structure. Investigation on electronic process in these new superconductors, for which a different electronic structure from those in previous Fe-based high-Tc superconductors is emerging, now has a valid structural and magnetic framework.

Unusual Coupling Between Field-induced Spin Fluctuations and Spin Density Wave in Intermetallic CeAg2Ge2

We report on the experimental evidences for an unusual coupling between the magnetic field- induced fluctuations of correlated Ce-ions coinciding with the discontinuous movement of the underlying spin density wave in the intermetallic rare earth compound CeAg2Ge2. The measurements performed using neutron scattering and magnetic Gruneisen ratio methods suggest that the coupling onsets at H= 2.7 T, T < 3.8 K and persists to the lowest measurement temperature T ~ 0.05 K. These measurements suggest a new mechanism behind the spin fluctuations which can affect the intrinsic properties of the system.

Study of the a_0(980) meson via the radiative decay phi->eta pi^0 gamma with the KLOE detector

We have studied the phi->a_0(980) gamma process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPhNE by detecting the phi->eta pi^0 gamma decays in the final states with eta->gamma gamma and eta->pi^+ pi^- pi^0. We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br(phi->eta pi^0 gamma)=(7.01 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.20)x10^-5 and (7.12 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22)x10^-5 respectively. We have also extracted the a_0(980) mass and its couplings to eta pi^0, K^+ K^-, and to the phi meson from the fit of the eta pi^0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Measurement of the absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma) decay with the KLOE detector

We have measured the absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma) decay, using about 20 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DAFNE, the Frascati phi-factory. Signal counts are obtained from the fit of the distribution of the momentum of the charged decay particle in the kaon rest frame. The result, inclusive of final-state radiation, is BR(K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma))=0.2065+/-0.0005_{stat}+/- 0.0008_{syst}.

Study of the process e+e- -> omega p0 with the KLOE detector

Using ~600 pb-1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAPhiNE, we have studied the production cross section of pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 and p0p0 gamma final states in e+e- collisions at center of mass energies between 1000 and 1030 MeV. By fitting the observed interference pattern around Mphi for both final states, we extract a measurement (preliminary) for the ratio Gamma(omega -> pi0 gamma)/Gamma(omega -> pi+ pi- pi0) = 0.0934 +- 0.0022. Since these two final states represent the 98% of the omega decay channels, we use unitarity to derive BR(omega -> pi+pi-pi0)= (89.94 +- 0.23)% and BR(omega -> pi0 gamma) = (8.40 +- 0.19)%. Moreover, the parameters describing the e+e- -> pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 reaction around Mphi are used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating phi -> omega pi0 decay: BR(phi -> omega pi0) = (5.63 +- 0.70) x 10^-5.

Determination of $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ Dalitz plot slopes and asymmetries with the KLOE detector

We have studied, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $Φ$-Factory, the dynamics of the decay $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ using $η$ mesons from the decay $ϕ\toηγ$ for an integrated luminosity ${\mathcal L}$ = 450 pb$^{-1}$. From a fit to the Dalitz plot density distribution we obtain a precise measurement of the slope parameters. An alternative parametrization relates the $π^+π^-π^0$ slopes to that for $η\to 3π^0$ showing the consistency of KLOE results for both channels. We also obtain the best confirmation of the $C$-invariance in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay.

Vus and lepton universality from kaon decays with the KLOE detector

KLOE has measured most decay branching ratios of Ks, Kl and K+/- mesons. It has also measured the Kl and the K+- lifetime and determined the shape of the form factors involved in kaon semileptonic decays. We present in the following a description of the above measurements and a well organized compendium of all of our data, with particular attention to correlations. These data provide the basis for the determination of the CKM parameter Vus and a test of the unitarity of the quark flavor mixing matrix. We also test lepton universality and place bounds on new physics using measurements of Vus from Kl2 and Kl3 decays.

Measurement of the charged kaon lifetime with the KLOE detector

We have measured the charged kaon lifetime using a sample of 15 \times 10^6 tagged kaon decays. Charged kaons were produced in pairs at the DA\PhiNE ϕ-factory, e^+e^- \to ϕ\to K^+ K^-. The decay of a K^+ was tagged by the production of a K^- and viceversa. The lifetime was obtained, for both charges, from independent measurements of the decay time and decay lenght distributions. From fits to the four distributions we find τ= (12.347\pm0.030) ns.

Precise measurements of the eta and the neutral kaon meson masses with the KLOE detector

We present precise measurements of the eta and K0 masses using the processes phi to eta gamma, eta to gamma gamma and phi to Ks Kl, Ks to pi+ pi-. The K0 mass measurement, M_K=497.583 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.020 (syst) MeV, is in acceptable agreement with the previous measurements but is more accurate. We find m(eta) = 547.874 +/- 0.007 (stat) +/- 0.031 (syst) MeV. Our value is the most accurate to date and is in agreement with two recent measurements based on eta decays, but is inconsistent, by about 10 sigma, with a measurement of comparable precision based on eta production at threshold.

Measurement of the slope parameter αfor the η\to 3π^0 decay at KLOE

We report a preliminary measurement of the slope parameter $α$ for the $η\to 3\piz$ decay carried out with KLOE at DA$Φ$NE; where $α$ is the parameter describing the energy dependence of the square of the matrix element for this decay. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot with a collected statistic of 420 pb$^{-1}$ we determine $α= -0.027 \pm 0.004 (stat) ^{+0.004}_{-0.006} (syst)$. This result is consistent with current chiral perturbation theory calculations within the unitary approach.

Determination of the η\toπ^+π^-π^0 Dalitz Plot slopes and asymmetries with the KLOE detector

We have studied, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $Φ$-Factory, the dynamics of the decay $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ using data from the radiative $ϕ\toηγ$ decay for an integrated luminosity $L = 450 \textrm{pb^{-1}}$. From a fit to the Dalitz plot density distribution we obtain a precise measurement of the slope parameters. This should allow to improve the knowledge of the decay amplitude which is sensitive to the u-d quark mass difference. We also present new best results on the C-violating asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay.
