Generalized coherent state representation of Bose-Einstein condensates

We show that the quantum many-body state of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) consistent with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations is a generalized coherent state (GCS). At zero temerature, the non-condensate density and the anomalous non-condensate correlation are not independent, allowing us to elimiate one of the three variables in the TDHFB.

Squeezing and temperature measurement in Bose-Einstein Condensates

In this paper we discuss the presence of temperature-dependent squeezing in the collective excitations of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, based on a recent theory of quasiparticle damping. A new scheme to measure temperature below the critical temperature is also considered.

Mechanical response functions of finite temperature Bose-Einstein Condensates

Using the Liouville space framework developed in nonlinear optics we calculate the linear response functions and susceptibilities of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) subject to an arbitrary mechanical force. Distinct signatures of the dynamics of finite temperature BEC are obtained by solving the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Numerical simulations of the position dependent linear response functions of one dimensional trapped BEC in the time and the frequency domains are presented.

Anisotropy of the Upper Critical Field and Critical Current in Single Crystal MgB$_2$

We report on specific heat, high magnetic field transport and $ac-$susceptibility measurements on magnesium diboride single crystals. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ for magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the Mg and B planes is presented for the first time in the entire temperature range. A very different temperature dependence has been observed in the two directions which yields to a temperature dependent anisotropy with $Γ\sim$ 5 at low temperatures and about 2 near $T_c$. A peak effect is observed in susceptibility measurements for $H \sim $2 T parallel to the $c-$axis and the critical current density presnts a sharp maximum for $H$ parallel to the ab-plane.

Geometric phases of mesoscopic spin in Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a possible scheme for generating spin-J geometric phases using a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). First we show how to observe the standard Berry phase using Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC. We find that the presence of intrinsic interatomic collisions creates degeneracy in energy that allows implementation of the non-Abelian geometric phases as well. The evolutions produced can be used to produce interference between different atomic species with high numbers of atoms or to fine control the difference in atoms between the two species. Finally, we show that errors in the standard Berry phase due to elastic collisions may be corrected by controlling inelastic collisions between atoms.

Quantum non-demolition measurements using Bose-Einstein condensates

We study possible scenarios for quantum non-demolition measurements using Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that the interactions between condensate atoms makes it possible to measure the atom number with minimal back action on the system. This is an example of atomic nonlinear optics that has significant implications in the quantum state preparation of the Bose condensates.

Adiabatic Output Coupling of a Bose Gas at Finite Temperatures

We develop a general theory of adiabatic output coupling from trapped atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates at finite temperatures. For weak coupling, the output rate from the condensate, and the excited levels in the trap, settles in a time proportional to the inverse of the spectral width of the coupling to the output modes. We discuss the properties of the output atoms in the quasi-steady-state where the population in the trap is not appreciably depleted. We show how the composition of the output beam, containing condensate and thermal component, may be controlled by changing the frequency of the output coupler. This composition determines the first and second order coherence of the output beam. We discuss the changes in the composition of the bose gas left in the trap and show how nonresonant output coupling can stimulate either the evaporation of thermal excitations in the trap or the growth of non-thermal excitations, when pairs of correlated atoms leave the condensate.

Exciting, Cooling And Vortex Trapping In A Bose-Condensed Gas

A straight forward numerical technique, based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is used to generate a self-consistent description of thermally-excited states of a dilute boson gas. The process of evaporative cooling is then modelled by following the time evolution of the system using the same equation. It is shown that the subsequent rethermalisation of the thermally-excited state produces a cooler coherent condensate. Other results presented show that trapping vortex states with the ground state may be possible in a two-dimensional experimental environment.

Tensor Analyzing Powers for Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering from Deuterium

We report on a first measurement of tensor analyzing powers in quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at an average three-momentum transfer of 1.7 fm$^{-1}$. Data sensitive to the spin-dependent nucleon density in the deuteron were obtained for missing momenta up to 150 MeV/$c$ with a tensor polarized $^2$H target internal to an electron storage ring. The data are well described by a calculation that includes the effects of final-state interaction, meson-exchange and isobar currents, and leading-order relativistic contributions.

Phenomenological damping in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

The method of phenomenological damping developed by Pitaevskii for superfluidity near the $λ$ point is simulated numerically for the case of a dilute, alkali, inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gas near absolute zero. We study several features of this method in describing the damping of excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In addition, we show that the method may be employed to obtain numerically accurate ground states for a variety of trap potentials.

Atom optical elements for Bose condensates

A simple model for atom optical elements for Bose condensate of trapped, dilute alkali atomns is proposed and numerical simulations are presented to illustrate its characteristics. We demonstrate ways of focusing and splitting the condensate by modifying experimentally adjustable parameters. We show that there are at least two ways of implementing atom optical elements: one may modulate the interatomic scattering length in space, or alternatively, use a sinusoidal, externally applied potential.

Twist-4 Matrix Elements of the Nucleon from Recent DIS Data at CERN and SLAC

We analyse the recent precision measurements of the lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering at CERN and SLAC to extract model independent constraints among the nucleon matrix elements of the twist-4 operators. We also study a parameterization of these matrix elements and point out the possibility that the matrix elements of the quark-gluon mixed operator has a negative value of the order of $- (400 \pm 100\ {\rm MeV})^2$ at 5 GeV$^2$ renormalization scale.
