Failure time and critical behaviour of fracture precursors in heterogeneous materials

The acoustic emission of fracture precursors, and the failure time of samples of heterogeneous materials (wood, fiberglass) are studied as a function of the load features and geometry. It is shown that in these materials the failure time is predicted with a good accuracy by a model of microcrack nucleation proposed by Pomeau. We find that the time interval $% δt$ between events (precursors) and the energy $\varepsilon$ are power law distributed and that the exponents of these power laws depend on the load history and on the material. In contrast, the cumulated acoustic energy $E$ presents a critical divergency near the breaking time $τ$ which is $% E\sim \left( \frac{τ-t}τ\right) ^{-γ}$. The positive exponent $% γ$ is independent, within error bars, on all the experimental parameters.

The effect of disorder on the fracture nucleation process

The statistical properties of failure are studied in a fiber bundle model with thermal noise. We show that the macroscopic failure is produced by a thermal activation of microcracks. Most importantly the effective temperature of the system is amplified by the spatial disorder (heterogeneity) of the fiber bundle. The case of a time dependent force and the validity of the Kaiser effects are also discussed. These results can give more insight to the recent experimental observations on thermally activated crack and can be useful to study the failure of electrical networks.

Memory in the aging of a polymer glass

Low frequency dielectric measurements on plexiglass (PMMA) show that cooling and heating the sample at constant rate give an hysteretic dependence on temperature of the dielectric constant $ε$. A temporary stop of cooling produces a downward relaxation of $ε$. Two main features are observed i) when cooling is resumed $ε$ goes back to the values obtained without the cooling stop (i.e. the low temperature state is independent of the cooling history) ii) upon reheating $ε$ keeps the memory of the aging history ({\it Memory}). The analogies and differences with similar experiments done in spin glasses are discussed.

Fluctuation-Dissipation-Theorem violation during the formation of a colloidal-glass

The relationship between the conductivity and the polarization noise is measured in a gel as a function of frequency in the range $1Hz - 40Hz$. It is found that at the beginning of the transition from a fluid like sol to a solid like gel the fluctuation dissipation theorem is strongly violated. The amplitude and the persistence time of this violation are decreasing functions of frequency. At the lowest frequencies of the measuring range it persists for times which are about 5% of the time needed to form the gel. This phenomenology is quite close to the recent theoretical predictions done for the violation of the fluctuation dissipation theorem in glassy systems.

Temperature cycling during the aging of a polymer glass

Temperature cycling is used to study of aging properties of PMMA dielectric constant. If a negative temperature cycle is applied during the aging time the relaxation dynamics is just delayed for a time equal to the cycle period. In contrast this time shifting procedure cannot be applied to positive temperature cycles . The analogies and differences with similar experiments done in other aging systems, such as spin glasses, orientational glasses and supercooled liquids, are discussed.

Material failure time and the fiber bundle model with thermal noise

The statistical properties of failure are studied in a fiber bundle model with thermal noise. We find that in agreement with recent experiments the macroscopic failure is produced by a thermal activation of microcracks. Most importantly the effective temperature of the system is amplified by the spatial disorder (heterogeneity) of the fiber bundle.

It is also shown that the crack growth process presents critical features when the failure time is approached.

Random Roughness of Boundary Increases Turbulent Convection Scaling Exponent

The influence of the boundary layer properties on the heat transport in turbulent thermal convection is experimentally investigated in a cell with a rough bottom plate. It is shown that the standard 2/7 exponent of the convective heat flow dependence on the Rayleigh number, usually observed in cell with smooth boundaries, increases if the roughness has power law distributed asperity heights and the thermal boundary layer thickness is smaller than the maximum asperity size. In contrast a periodic roughness does not influence the heat transportlaw exponent.

Multiscale velocity correlation in turbulence: experiments, numerical simulations, synthetic signals

Multiscale correlation functions in high Reynolds number experimental turbulence, numerical simulations and synthetic signals are investigated. Fusion Rules predictions as they arise from multiplicative, almost uncorrelated, random processes for the energy cascade are tested. Leading and sub-leading contribution, in the inertial range, can be explained as arising from a multiplicative random process for the energy transfer mechanisms. Two different predictions for correlations involving dissipative observable are also briefly discussed.

Moisture induced Ageing in Granular Media

We present experiments showing that a granular system of small beads does exhibit ageing properties : its maximum stability angle is measured to increase logarithmically with resting time, i.e. the time elapsed before performing the measure. We show that humidity is the crucial ingredient responsible for this behaviour : while ageing effects are important at intermediate humidity, they disappear at vanishing humidity. On the basis of these experimental results, we propose a model based on the activated condensation of liquid bridges between the beads. Within this picture, we are able to reproduce both the waiting-time and humidity dependence of the ageing properties.

Generalized scaling in fully developed turbulence

In this paper we report numerical and experimental results on the scaling properties of the velocity turbulent fields in several flows. The limits of a new form of scaling, named Extended Self Similarity(ESS), are discussed. We show that, when a mean shear is absent, the self scaling exponents are universal and they do not depend on the specific flow (3D homogeneous turbulence, thermal convection , MHD). In contrast, ESS is not observed when a strong shear is present. We propose a generalized version of self scaling which extends down to the smallest resolvable scales even in cases where ESS is not present. This new scaling is checked in several laboratory and numerical experiment. A possible theoretical interpretation is also proposed. A synthetic turbulent signal having most of the properties of a real one has been generated.

A new scaling property of turbulent flows

We discuss a possible theoretical interpretation of the self scaling property of turbulent flows (Extended Self Similarity). Our interpretation predicts that, even in cases when ESS is not observed, a generalized self scaling, must be observed. This prediction is checked on a number of laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations.

On the intermittent energy transfer at viscous scales in turbulent flows

In this letter we present numerical and experimental results on the scaling properties of velocity turbulent fields in the range of scales where viscous effects are acting. A generalized version of Extended Self Similarity capable of describing scaling laws of the velocity structure functions down to the smallest resolvable scales is introduced. Our findings suggest the absence of any sharp viscous cutoff in the intermittent transfer of energy.
