Measurement of the X-ARAPUCA's Absolute Photon Detection Efficiency for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment's Vertical Drift Far Detector

The DUNE experiment will implement a photon detection system composed of X-ARAPUCA (XA) devices. These trap incoming VUV photons by internal reflection in a wavelength shifter light guide to be collected onto silicon photomultiplier arrays, sensitive to visible light. In the baseline design, dichroic filters are used to prevent photons from escaping. The configuration proposed for DUNE's Vertical Drift (VD) module has been characterised in liquid argon for the first time using dedicated cryogenic setups developed at CIEMAT and INFN Naples. Additionally, several alternative configurations, based on the design optimisation studies of an R&D campaign, have been evaluated. The results show an efficiency of up to 4.5$\pm$4~% at 4.5~V overvoltage, representing a significant improvement over previous XA implementations. Most notably, configurations without dichroic filters show an improvement of up to 18~%, attributed to transmittance losses in the dichroic filters.

Development and operational experience of magnetic horn system for T2K experiment

A magnetic horn system to be operated at a pulsed current of 320 kA and to survive high-power proton beam operation at 750 kW was developed for the T2K experiment. The first set of T2K magnetic horns was operated for over 12 million pulses during the four years of operation from 2010 to 2013, under a maximum beam power of 230 kW, and $6.63\times10^{20}$ protons were exposed to the production target. No significant damage was observed throughout this period. This successful operation of the T2K magnetic horns led to the discovery of the $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ oscillation phenomenon in 2013 by the T2K experiment. In this paper, details of the design, construction, and operation experience of the T2K magnetic horns are described.

Sources of Variability in Alpha Emissivity Measurements at LA and ULA Levels, a Multicenter Study

Alpha emissivity measurements are important in the semiconductor industry for assessing the suitability of materials for use in production processes. A recently published round-robin study that circulated the same samples to several alpha counting centers showed wide center-to-center variations in measured alpha emissivity. A separate analysis of these results hypothesized that much of the variation might arise from differences in sample-to-entrance window separations. XIA recently introduced an ultra low background counter, the UltraLo-1800 (UltraLo), that operates in a fundamentally different manner from the proportional counters used at most of the centers in the original study. In particular, by placing the sample within the counting volume, it eliminates the sample-to-entrance window separation issue noted above, and so offers an opportunity to test this hypothesis. In this work we briefly review how the UltraLo operates and describe a new round-robin study conducted entirely on UltraLo instruments using a set of standard samples that included two samples used in the original study. This study shows that, for LA (Low Alpha between 2 and 50 alpha/khr-cm$^2$) sample measurements, the only remaining site-to-site variations were due to counting statistics. Variations in ULA (Ultra-Low Alpha < 2 alpha/khr-cm$^2$) sample measurements were reduced three-fold, compared to the earlier study, with the measurements suggesting that residual activity variations now primarily arise from site-to-site differences in the cosmogenic background.

The 2010 Interim Report of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment Collaboration Physics Working Groups

In early 2010, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) science collaboration initiated a study to investigate the physics potential of the experiment with a broad set of different beam, near- and far-detector configurations. Nine initial topics were identified as scientific areas that motivate construction of a long-baseline neutrino experiment with a very large far detector. We summarize the scientific justification for each topic and the estimated performance for a set of far detector reference configurations. We report also on a study of optimized beam parameters and the physics capability of proposed Near Detector configurations. This document was presented to the collaboration in fall 2010 and updated with minor modifications in early 2011.

AB and Berry phases for a quantum cloud of charge

We investigate the phase accumulated by a charged particle in an extended quantum state as it encircles one or more magnetic fluxons, each carrying half a flux unit. A simple, essentially topological analysis reveals an interplay between the Aharonov-Bohm phase and Berry's phase.
