ANDES, the high-resolution spectrograph of the ELT: simulated performance of the CORO module and overview of the high-contrast capabilities for exoplanet observations

We present the simulated performance of the coronagraph (CORO) module for ANDES, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) high-resolution spectrograph. ANDES aims to address a broad range of science cases, including the characterization of the atmosphere of exoplanets. With a first light envisioned by 2035, the instrument baseline features a modular fiber-fed echelle spectrograph with visible and near-infrared ultra-stable spectral arms to provide a simultaneous spectral range of 0.4-1.8\,$\mu$m with a spectral resolving power up to 100,000. ANDES also includes an Integral Field Unit (IFU) mode-fed by a single-conjugate adaptive optics (SCAO) module and an insertable CORO module, enabling the combination of high-contrast imaging and high-dispersion spectroscopy (R=100,000) for the study of exoplanet properties. In this contribution, the ANDES CORO design, its main features and its simulated performance are detailed in the presence of SCAO residual errors to probe exoplanet atmospheres with the spectro-imager mode at high-spatial resolution and with unprecedented angular resolution. We show the preliminary simulation results on the predicted contrast and the expected detection performance with ANDES performance unfolded (APU), the simulation tool to determine the yield of exoplanets that will be detected in emitted and possibly reflected light. The characterization operation of the instrument will be discussed to assess the ANDES ability to detect atomic and molecular signatures connected to the exoplanet atmosphere characteristics.

COLIBRI (SVOM/FM-GFT): Instrumentation and Performances on the SVOM Alerts

COLIBRI, the French Mexican Ground Followup Telescope (FM GFT) for SVOM, is a 1.3 meter rapid response optical facility specifically developed for prompt, multiband observations of GRB afterglows and for delivering subarcsecond localisations of optical counterparts for detailed followup studies. The telescope operates through a fully automated system that manages the entire workflow, from alert reception to counterpart identification. Commissioning results confirm that the telescope meets design specifications, and this paper presents a comprehensive performance assessment of the capabilities.

Determining the aberrations in a nearly diffraction-limited spectrograph

We present a method to determine the static aberrations in a nearly diffraction-limited spectrograph introduced, for example, by alignment or manufacturing errors. We consider an instrument with two stages separated by a slit or image slicer located in the intermediate focal plane. In such a spectrograph, it is not trivial to distinguish aberrations in the first stage, before the slit, from those in the second, after the slit. However, our method achieves this. Measuring these aberrations separately opens the possibility of reducing them, by realignment or other means, and thereby improving the optical performance of the instrument. The method is based on fitting models to multiple images of a point source, with controlled displacements of the source perpendicular to the slit and controlled defocuses of the second stage or the detector. Fitting models to these images allows the determination of the aberrations in both stages. Our key discovery is that the displaced and defocused images provide additional information which allows us to break the ambiguity between the two stages. We present simulations that validate the performance of the method.

Late Central Engine Activity in GRB 180205A

We present optical photometry of the afterglow of the long GRB 180205A with the COATLI telescope from 217 seconds to about 5 days after the {\itshape Swift}/BAT trigger. We analyse this photometry in the conjunction with the X-ray light curve from {\itshape Swift}/XRT. The late-time light curves and spectra are consistent with the standard forward-shock scenario. However, the early-time optical and X-ray light curves show non-typical behavior; the optical light curve exhibits a flat plateau while the X-ray light curve shows a flare. We explore several scenarios and conclude that the most likely explanation for the early behavior is late activity of the central engine.

Improved achromatization of phase mask coronagraphs using colored apodization

For direct imaging of exoplanets, a stellar coronagraph helps to remove the image of an observed bright star by attenuating the diffraction effects caused by the telescope aperture of diameter D. The Dual Zone Phase Mask (DZPM) coronagraph constitutes a promising concept since it theoretically offers a small inner working angle (IWA \sim λ_0/D), good achromaticity and high starlight rejection, typically reaching a 1e6 contrast at 5 λ_0/D from the star over a spectral bandwidth Δλ/λ_0 of 25% (similar to H-band). This last value proves to be encouraging for broadband imaging of young and warm Jupiter-like planets. Contrast levels higher than 1e6 are however required for the observation of older and/or less massive companions over a finite spectral bandwidth. An achromatization improvement of the DZPM coronagraph is therefore mandatory to reach such performance. In its design, the DZPM coronagraph uses a grey (or achromatic) apodization. We propose to replace it by a colored apodization to increase the performance of this coronagraphic system over a large spectral range. This innovative concept, called Colored Apodizer Phase Mask (CAPM) coronagraph, is defined with some design parameters optimized to reach the best contrast in the exoplanet search area. Once this done, we study the performance of the CAPM coronagraph in the presence of different errors to evaluate the sensitivity of our concept. A 2.5 mag contrast gain is estimated from the performance provided by the CAPM coronagraph with respect to that of the DZPM coronagraph. A 2.2e-8 intensity level at 5 λ_0/D separation is then theoretically achieved with the CAPM coronagraph in the presence of a clear circular aperture and a 25% bandwidth. In addition, our studies show that our concept is less sensitive to low than high-order aberrations for a given value of rms wavefront errors.

Optimal behavior of viscoelastic flow at resonant frequencies

The global entropy generation rate in the zero-mean oscillatory flow of a Maxwell fluid in a pipe is analyzed with the aim at determining its behavior at resonant flow conditions. This quantity is calculated explicitly using the analytic expression for the velocity field and assuming isothermal conditions. The global entropy generation rate shows well-defined peaks at the resonant frequencies where the flow displays maximum velocities. It was found that resonant frequencies can be considered optimal in the sense that they maximize the power transmitted to the pulsating flow at the expense of maximum dissipation.
