Measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand for proton and deuteron from 200 to 1400 MeV

New data for the total inclusive helicity-dependent cross section for the proton and deuteron were obtained in the photon energy interval 200-1400 MeV. The experiment was performed at the A2 tagged-photon facility of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) using a circularly polarized photon beam and longitudinally polarized proton and deuteron targets. The reaction products were detected using the large-acceptance Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter, which covers 97% of the full solid angle. These new results, obtained with fine energy binning, significantly expand both the quantity and the quality of the available data for these observables and enable a detailed comparison with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. From the combination of the results for the deuteron and the proton, important information could also be extracted for the free neutron. Based on these data, and using existing models to evaluate the missing contributions from unmeasured photon energy regions, the validity of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule has been verified for the proton, the neutron, and the deuteron. These new data provide a precise experimental benchmark for theoretical models used to study nucleons, both in their free state and when embedded in the nuclear medium.

Studies of CPT symmetry in positronium decays with 192 plastic strip J-PET detector

A direct test of the CPT symmetry is performed for the electromagnetic decays of ortho-positronium using the J-PET tomograph. We present the precise measurement of the CPT-sensitive angular correlation entailing the positronium spin and the momenta of its annihilation photons, surpassing previous studies utilizing the same detection system. Positrons originating from a $^{22}$Na source are emitted from the detector's center and subsequently form positronium atoms within the spherical chamber covered with porous material. Reconstruction of annihilation locations using the 192-strip J-PET detector makes it possible to determine the positronium emission direction, which defines the quantization axis along which positronium is polarized, without the application of external magnetic fields. The measurements were performed in total for 356 days resulting in an identification of 47.8 million events with ortho-positronium decays into three photons. The results are consistent with the exactness of CPT symmetry with measured asymmetry amplitude -0.00029 $\pm$ 0.00022 (stat.) and with statistical error four times smaller than the previous best measurement.

The J-PET detector -- a tool for precision studies of ortho-positronium decays

The J-PET tomograph is constructed from plastic scintillator strips arranged axially in concentric cylindrical layers. It enables investigations of positronium decays by measurement of the time, position, polarization and energy deposited by photons in the scintillators, in contrast to studies conducted so far with crystal and semiconductor based detection systems where the key selection of events is based on the measurement of the photons energies. In this article we show that the J-PET tomograph system is capable of exclusive measurements of the decays of ortho-positronium atoms. We present the first positronium production results, its lifetime distribution measurements and discuss estimation of the influence of various background sources. The tomograph s performance demonstrated here makes it suitable for precision studies of positronium decays including entanglement of the final state photons, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy plus molecular imaging diagnostics.

Search for the $η$ mesic $^3$He in the $pd\rightarrow d p π^{0}$ reaction with the WASA-at-COSY facility

The excitation function for the $pd\rightarrow$ $d p π^{0}$ reaction has been measured by WASA-at-COSY experiment with the aim of searching for $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$η$ mesic nuclei. The measurement in the vicinity of $η$ meson production was performed using a ramped proton beam. The data analysis and interpretation was carried out with the assumption that the $η$-mesic Helium decays via the formation of an intermediate N$^{*}$(1535) resonance. No direct signal of the $η$-mesic nucleus is observed in the excitation function. We determine a new improved upper limit for the total cross section for the bound state production and decay in the $pd\rightarrow$ $(^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$η)_{bound} \rightarrow$ $d p π^{0}$ process. It varies between 13 nb to 24 nb for the bound state with width in the range $Γ\in (5,50)$ MeV.

Search for eta mesic 3He with the WASA-at-COSY facility in the pd-> 3He 2gamma and pd-> 3He 6gamma reactions

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an $η$ meson and $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the $η$-mesic nucleus decay, the $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 2γ$ and $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 6γ$ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of $η$ meson bound in $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an $^3$He-$η$ nucleus width $Γ$ above 20 MeV and binding energy $B_s$ between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the $η$-mesic $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus formation followed by the $η$ meson decay which varies between $2$ nb and $15$ nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

Spin dependence of η meson production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} ppη has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q = 72 MeV the data reveals strong interference of P s and P p partial waves and cancellation of (P p) and Ss*Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the η meson.

Determination of the eta'-proton scattering length in free space

Taking advantage of both the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detector and the high energy resolution of the low-emittance proton-beam of the Cooler Synchrotron COSY we determine the excitation function for the pp --> pp eta' reaction close-to-threshold. Combining these data with previous results we extract the scattering length for the eta'-proton potential in free space to be Re(a_{p eta'}) = 0+-0.43 fm and Im(a_{p eta'}) = 0.37(+0.40)(-0.16) fm.

Upper limit of the total cross section for the pn --> pn eta' reaction

The upper limit of the total cross section for the pn --> pn eta' reaction has been determined near the kinematical threshold in the excess energy range from 0 to 24 MeV. The measurement was performed using the COSY-11 detector setup, a deuteron cluster target, and the proton beam of COSY with a momentum of 3.35 GeV/c. The energy dependence of the upper limit of the cross section was extracted exploiting the Fermi momenta of nucleons inside the deuteron. Comparison of the determined upper limit of the ratio R_eta' = sigma(pn --> pn eta') / sigma(pp --> pp eta') with the corresponding ratio for eta-meson production does not favor the dominance of the N*(1535) resonance in the production process of the eta' meson and suggests nonidentical production mechanisms for eta and eta' mesons.

Near threshold production of the eta meson via the quasi-free pn --> pn eta reaction

Total cross sections for the quasi-free pn --> pn eta reaction in the range from the kinematical threshold up to 20 MeV excess energy have been determined. At threshold they exceed corresponding cross sections for the pp --> pp eta reaction by a factor of about three in contrast to the factor of six established for higher excess energies. To large extent, the observed decrease of the ratio sigma(pn --> pn eta)/sigma(pp --> pp eta) towards threshold may be assigned to the different energy dependence of the proton-proton and proton-neutron final state interactions. The experiment has been conducted using a proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and a cluster jet deuteron target. The proton-neutron reactions were tagged by the spectator proton whose momentum was measured for each event. Protons and neutron outgoing from the pn --> pn eta reaction have been registered by means of the COSY-11 facility, an apparatus dedicated for threshold meson production.

Decoupling heavy particles simultaneously

The renormalization group is extended to cases where several heavy particles are decoupled at the same time. This involves large logarithms which are scale-invariant and so cannot be eliminated by a change of renormalization scheme. A set of scale-invariant running couplings, one for each heavy particle, is constructed without reference to intermediate thresholds. The entire heavy-quark correction to the axial charge of the weak neutral current is derived to next-to-leading order, and checked in leading order by evaluating diagrams explicitly. The mechanism for cancelling contributions from the top and bottom quarks in the equal-mass limit is surprisingly non-trivial.

Matching functions for heavy particles

We introduce matching functions as a means of summing heavy-quark logarithms to any order. Our analysis is based on Witten's approach, where heavy quarks are decoupled one at a time in a mass-independent renormalization scheme. The outcome is a generalization of the matching conditions of Bernreuther and Wetzel: we show how to derive closed formulas for summed logarithms to any order, and present explicit expressions for leading order and next-to-leading order contributions. The decoupling of heavy quarks in theories lacking asymptotic freedom is also considered.

Heavy-quark axial charges to non-leading order

We combine Witten's renormalization group with the matching conditions of Bernreuther and Wetzel to calculate at next-to-leading order the complete heavy-quark contribution to the neutral-current axial-charge measurable in neutrino-proton elastic scattering. Our results are manifestly renormalization group invariant.

The Spin Structure of the Proton and Polarized Collider Physics

We summarise the present status of the proton spin problem and the physics possibilities for future polarized ep and pp colliders. This summary is based on the presentations and discussion sessions at the workshop ``The Spin Structure of the Proton and Polarized Collider Physics'' (Trento, July 23-28, 2001).

A polarised QCD condensate: nu p elastic scattering as a probe of U_A(1) dynamics

U_A(1) dynamics have the potential to induce a polarised condensate inside a nucleon. The formation of this condensate is related to the realisation of U_A(1) symmetry breaking by tunneling processes such as instantons. If it is present, the polarised condensate induces a term in g_1 which has support only at x=0. Tunneling processes then induce a net transfer of ``spin'' from finite x to x=0. The polarised condensate may be measured by comparing the flavour-singlet axial charges which are extracted from polarised deep inelastic and nu p elastic scattering experiments.

The Spin and Flavour Dependence of High-Energy Photoabsorption

We review the present data on high-energy, spin-dependent photoabsorption. We find a strong isotriplet term in $(σ_A - σ_P)$ which persists from $Q^2 \sim 0.25$GeV$^2$ to high $Q^2$ polarised deep inelastic scattering. For $Q^2 \sim 4$GeV$^2$ and $x$ between 0.01 and 0.12 the isotriplet part of $g_1$ behaves as $g_1^{(p-n)} \sim x^{-{1 \over 2}}$, in contrast to soft Regge theory which predicts that $g_1^{(p-n)}$ should converge as $x \to 0$. The isotriplet, polarised structure function $2x g_1^{(p-n)}$ is significantly greater than the isotriplet, unpolarised structure function $F_2^{(p-n)}$ in this kinematic region. We analyse the low $Q^2$ photoabsorption data from E-143 and SMC and use this data to estimate the high-energy Regge contribution to the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum-rule.

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov Sum-Rule in QCD

Photoproduction spin sum-rules offer a new window on the spin structure of the nucleon that complements the information we can learn from polarised deep inelastic scattering experiments. We review the theory and present status of the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum-rule in QCD, emphasising the possible relation between the present ``discrepancy'' in this sum-rule and the nucleon's strangeness magnetic moment. In the case of an elementary electron or photon target (say at the NLC) the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum-rule provides a test for physics beyond the minimal Standard Model.

Measuring anomalous ``spin'' in elastic e-p or ν-p and deep inelastic e-p scattering

We obtain a general rule that the O(1/log m_h) term due to the current \bar{h}γ_μγ_5h of a mass-m_h quark h in f-flavour theory is -3\bar{g}^2_f(m_h)/{2π^2(33-2f)} times the flavour singlet current of the residual (f-1)-flavour theory, where \bar{g}_f is the f-flavour running coupling constant in a mass-independent renormalization scheme. The rule is applied to the Ellis-Jaffe moment below and well above charm threshold, and to low-energy Z^0-exchange amplitudes. The singlet axial charge of the proton common to these experiments is both scale and gauge invariant, but is related to the axial anomaly and the ``gluon spin'' by a non-perturbative renormalization factor.
