Regular Multi-Horizon Black Holes in Modified Gravity with Non-Linear Electrodynamics

We investigated the regular multi-horizon black holes in the Einstein gravity, $F(R)$ gravity and the 5 dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity, all of them coupled with non-linear electrodynamics. We presented several explicit examples of the actions which admit the solutions describing regular black hole space-time with multi-horizons. Thermodynamics of the obtained black hole solutions is studied. The explicit expressions of the temperature, the entropy, the thermodynamical energy and the free energy are obtained. Although the temperature vanishes in the extremal limit where the radii of the two horizons coincide with each other as in the standard multi-horizon black hole like the Reissner-Nordstr\" om black hole or the Kerr black hole, the larger temperature corresponds to the larger horizon radius. This is different from the standard black holes, where the larger temperature corresponds to the smaller horizon radius. We also found that the specific heat becomes positive for the large temperature, which is also different from the standard black holes, where the specific heat is negative. It should be also noted that the thermodynamical energy is not identical with the ADM mass. Furthermore in case of the Gauss-Bonnet gravity, it is demonstrated that the entropy can become negative.

Constant-roll Inflation in $F(R)$ Gravity

We propose the study of constant-roll inflation in $F(R)$ gravity. We use two different approaches, one that relates an $F(R)$ gravity to well known scalar models of constant-roll and a second that examines directly the constant-roll condition in $F(R)$ gravity. With regards to the first approach, by using well known techniques, we find the $F(R)$ gravity which realizes a given constant-roll evolution in the scalar-tensor theory. We also perform a conformal transformation in the resulting $F(R)$ gravity and we find the Einstein frame counterpart theory. As we demonstrate, the resulting scalar potential is different in comparison to the original scalar constant-roll case, and the same applies for the corresponding observational indices. Moreover, we discuss how cosmological evolutions that can realize constant-roll to constant-roll eras transitions in the scalar-tensor description, can be realized by vacuum $F(R)$ gravity. With regards to the second approach, we examine directly the effects of the constant-roll condition on the inflationary dynamics of vacuum $F(R)$ gravity. We present in detail the formalism of constant-roll $F(R)$ gravity inflationary dynamics and we discuss how the inflationary indices become in this case. We use two well known $F(R)$ gravities in order to illustrate our findings, the $R^2$ model and a power-law $F(R)$ gravity in vacuum. As we demonstrate, in both cases the parameter space is enlarged in comparison to the slow-roll counterparts of the models, and in effect, the models can also be compatible with the observational data. Finally, we briefly address the graceful exit issue.

Reconstruction of Slow-roll $F(R)$ Gravity Inflation from the Observational Indices

In this work, we introduce a bottom-up $F(R)$ gravity reconstruction technique, in which we fix the observational indices and we seek for the $F(R)$ gravity which may realize them. Particularly, as an exemplification of our method, we shall assume that the scalar-to-tensor ratio has a specific form, and from it we shall reconstruct the $F(R)$ gravity that may realize it, focusing on special values of the parameters in order to obtain analytical results. The observational indices we study are compatible with the latest observational data, and we discuss how the functional form of the observational indices may affect the viability of the model.

Unification of Constant-roll Inflation and Dark Energy with Logarithmic $R^2$-corrected and Exponential $F(R)$ Gravity

In this paper we investigate how to describe in a unified way a constant-roll inflationary era with a dark energy era, by using the theoretical framework of $F(R)$ gravity. To this end, we introduce some classes of appropriately chosen $F(R)$ gravity models, and we examine in detail how the unification of early and late-time acceleration eras can be achieved. We study in detail the inflationary era, and as we demonstrate it is possible to achieve a viable inflationary era, for which the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations and the scalar-to-tensor ratio can be compatible with the latest observational data. In addition, the graceful exit issue is briefly discussed for a class of models. Finally, we discuss the dark energy oscillations issue, and we investigate which model from one of the classes we introduced, can produce oscillations with the smallest amplitude.

Inflationary universe in terms of a van der Waals viscous fluid

The inflationary expansion of our early-time universe is considered in terms of the van der Waals equation, as equation of state for the cosmic fluid, where a bulk viscosity contribution is assumed to be present. The corresponding gravitational equations for the energy density in a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe are solved, and an analytic expression for the scale factor is obtained. Attention is paid, specifically, to the role of the viscosity term in the accelerated expansion; the values of the slow-roll parameters, the spectral index, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio for the van der Waals model are calculated and compared with the most recent astronomical data from the Planck satellite. By imposing reasonable restrictions on the parameters of the van der Waals equation, in the presence of viscosity, it is shown to be possible for this model to comply quite precisely with the observational data. One can therefore conclude that the inclusion of viscosity in the theory of the inflationary epoch definitely improves the cosmological models.

Phase Space Analysis of the Accelerating Multi-fluid Universe

We study in detail the phase space of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe filled with various cosmological fluids which may or may not interact. We use various expressions for the equation of state, and we analyze the physical significance of the resulting fixed points. In addition we discuss the effects of the stability or an instability of some fixed points. Moreover we study an interesting phenomenological scenario for which there is an oscillating interaction between the dark energy and dark matter fluid. As we demonstrate, in the context of the model we use, at early times the interaction is negligible and it starts to grow as the cosmic time approaches the late-time era. Also the cosmological dynamical system is split into two distinct dynamical systems which have two distinct de Sitter fixed points, with the early-time de Sitter point being unstable. This framework gives an explicit example of the unification of the early-time with late-time acceleration. Finally, we discuss in some detail the physical interpretation of the various models we present in this work.

Covariant Generalized Holographic Dark Energy and Accelerating Universe

We proposed the generalized holographic dark energy model where infrared cutoff is identified with the combination of the FRW universe parameters: the Hubble rate, particle and future horizons, cosmological constant, the universe life-time (if finite) and their derivatives. It is demonstrated that with the corresponding choice of the cutoff one can map such holographic dark energy to modified gravity or gravity with general fluid. Explicitly, F(R) gravity and general perfect fluid are worked out in detail and corresponding infrared cutoff is found. Using this correspondence, we get realistic inflation or viable dark energy or unified inflationary-dark energy universe in terms of covariant holographic dark energy.

Inflation with a Smooth Constant-Roll to Constant-Roll Era Transition

In this paper we study canonical scalar field models with a varying second slow-roll parameter, that allow transitions between constant-roll eras. In the models with two constant-roll eras it is possible to avoid fine-tunings in the initial conditions of the scalar field. We mainly focus on the stability of the resulting solutions and we also investigate if these solutions are attractors of the cosmological system. We shall calculate the resulting scalar potential and by using a numerical approach, we examine the stability and attractor properties of the solutions. As we show, the first constant-roll era is dynamically unstable towards linear perturbations and the cosmological system is driven by the attractor solution to the final constant-roll era. As we demonstrate, it is possible to have a nearly-scale invariant power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations in some cases, however this is strongly model dependent and depends on the rate of the final constant-roll era. Finally, we present in brief the essential features of a model that allows oscillations between constant-roll eras.

Beyond-one-loop quantum gravity action yielding both inflation and late-time acceleration

A unified description of early-time inflation with the current cosmic acceleration is achieved by means of a new theory that uses a quadratic model of gravity, with the inclusion of an exponential $F(R)$-gravity contribution for dark energy. High-curvature corrections of the theory come from higher-derivative quantum gravity and yield an effective action that goes beyond the one-loop approximation. It is shown that, in this theory, viable inflation emerges in a natural way, leading to a spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio that are in perfect agreement with the most reliable Planck results. At low energy, late-time accelerated expansion takes place. As exponential gravity, for dark energy, must be stabilized during the matter and radiation eras, we introduce a curing term in order to avoid nonphysical singularities in the effective equation of state parameter. The results of our analysis are confirmed by accurate numerical simulations, which show that our model does fit the most recent cosmological data for dark energy very precisely.

Inflationary Dynamics with a Smooth Slow-Roll to Constant-Roll Era Transition

In this paper we investigate the implications of having a varying second slow-roll index on the canonical scalar field inflationary dynamics. We shall be interested in cases that the second slow-roll can take small values and correspondingly large values, for limiting cases of the function that quantifies the variation of the second slow-roll index. As we demonstrate, this can naturally introduce a smooth transition between slow-roll and constant-roll eras. We discuss the theoretical implications of the mechanism we introduce and we use various illustrative examples in order to better understand the new features that the varying second slow-roll index introduces. In the examples we will present, the second slow-roll index has exponential dependence on the scalar field, and in one of these cases, the slow-roll era corresponds to a type of $α$-attractor inflation. Finally, we briefly discuss how the combination of slow-roll and constant-roll may lead to non-Gaussianities in the primordial perturbations.

Big-Bounce with Finite-time Singularity: The $F(R)$ Gravity Description

An alternative to the Big Bang cosmologies is obtained by the Big Bounce cosmologies. In this paper, we study a bounce cosmology with a Type IV singularity occurring at the bouncing point, in the context of $F(R)$ modified gravity. We investigate the evolution of the Hubble radius and we examine the issue of primordial cosmological perturbations in detail. As we demonstrate, for the singular bounce, the primordial perturbations originating from the cosmological era near the bounce, do not produce a scale invariant spectrum and also the short wavelength modes, after these exit the horizon, do not freeze, but grow linearly with time. After presenting the cosmological perturbations study, we discuss the viability of the singular bounce model, and our results indicate that the singular bounce must be combined with another cosmological scenario, or should be modified appropriately, in order that it leads to a viable cosmology. The study of the slow-roll parameters leads to the same result, indicating the singular bounce theory is unstable at the singularity point, for certain values of the parameters. We also conformally transform the Jordan frame singular bounce, and as we demonstrate, the Einstein frame metric leads to a Big Rip singularity. Therefore, the Type IV singularity in the Jordan frame, becomes a Big Rip singularity in the Einstein frame. Finally, we briefly study a generalized singular cosmological model, which contains two Type IV singularities, with quite appealing features.

Inflationary $α$-attractors from $F(R)$ Gravity

In this paper we study some classes of $α$-attractors models in the Jordan frame and we find the corresponding $F(R)$ gravity theory. We study analytically the problem at leading order and we investigate whether the attractor picture persists in the $F(R)$ gravity equivalent theory. As we show, if the slow-roll conditions are assumed in the Jordan frame, the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations and the scalar-to-tensor ratio are identical to the corresponding observational indices of the $R^2$ model, a result which indicates that the attractor property is also found in the corresponding $F(R)$ gravity theories of the $α$-attractors models. Moreover, implicit and approximate forms of the $F(R)$ gravity inflationary attractors are found.

Viable Mimetic Completion of Unified Inflation-Dark Energy Evolution in Modified Gravity

In this paper, we demonstrate that a unified description of early and late-time acceleration is possible in the context of mimetic $F(R)$ gravity. We study the inflationary era in detail and demonstrate that it can be realized even in mimetic $F(R)$ gravity where traditional $F(R)$ gravity fails to describe the inflation. By using standard methods we calculated the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations and the scalar-to-tensor ratio. We use two $F(R)$ gravity models and as it turns out, for both the models under study the observational indices are compatible with both the latest Planck and the BICEP2/Keck array data. Finally, the graceful exit from inflation is guaranteed by the existence of growing curvature perturbations when the slow-roll era ends.

Loop Quantum Cosmology Gravitational Baryogenesis

Loop Quantum Cosmology is an appealing quantum completion of classical cosmology, which brings along various theoretical features which in many cases offer remedy or modify various classical cosmology aspects. In this paper we address the gravitational baryogenesis mechanism in the context of Loop Quantum Cosmology. As we demonstrate, when Loop Quantum Cosmology effects are taken into account in the resulting Friedmann equations for a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe, then even for a radiation dominated Universe, the predicted baryon-to-entropy ratio from the gravitational baryogenesis mechanism is non-zero, in contrast to the Einstein-Hilbert case, in which case the baryon-to-entropy ratio is zero. We also discuss various other cases apart from the radiation domination case, and we discuss how the baryon-to-entropy ratio is affected from the parameters of the quantum theory. In addition, we use illustrative exact solutions of Loop Quantum Cosmology and we investigate under which circumstances the baryon-to-entropy ratio can be compatible with the observational constraints.

Precision Predictions for the Primordial Power Spectra from f(R) Models of Inflation

We study the power spectra of f(R) inflation using a new technique in which the norm-squared of the mode functions is evolved. Our technique results in excellent analytic approximations for how the spectra depend upon the function $f(R)$. Although the spectra are numerically the same in the Jordan and Einstein frames for the same wave number $k$, they depend upon the geometries of these frames in quite different ways. For example, the power spectra in the two frames are different functions of the number of e-foldings until end of inflation. We discuss how future data on reheating can be used to distinguish f(R) inflation from scalar-driven inflation.

Deformed Matter Bounce with Dark Energy Epoch

We extend the Loop Quantum Cosmology matter bounce scenario in order to include a dark energy era, which ends abruptly at a Rip singularity where the scale factor and the Hubble rate diverge. In the "deformed matter bounce scenario", the Universe is contracting from an initial non-causal matter dominated era until it reaches a minimal radius. After that it expands in a decelerating way, until at late times, where it expands in an accelerating way, thus the model is described by a dark energy era that follows the matter dominated era. Depending on the choice of the free parameters of the model, the dark energy era is quintessential like which follows the matter domination era, and eventually it crosses the phantom divide line and becomes phantom. At the end of the dark energy era, a Rip singularity exists, where the scale factor and Hubble rate diverge, however the physical system cannot reach the singularity, since the effective energy density and pressure become complex. This indicates two things, firstly that the ordinary Loop Quantum Cosmology matter bounce evolution stops, thus ending the infinite repetition of the ordinary matter bounce scenario. Secondly, the fact that both the pressure and the density become complex indicates probably that the description of the cosmic evolution within the theoretical context of Loop Quantum Cosmology, ceases to describe the physics of the system and possibly a more fundamental theory of quantum gravity is needed near the would be Rip singularity. We describe the qualitative features of the model and we also investigate how this cosmology could be realized by a viscous fluid and scalar field in the context of LQC.

Dark Energy Oscillations in Mimetic $F(R)$ Gravity

In this paper we address the problem of dark energy oscillations in the context of mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with potential. The issue of dark energy oscillations can be a problem in some models of ordinary $F(R)$ gravity and a remedy that can make the oscillations milder is to introduce additional modifications in the functional form of the $F(R)$ gravity. As we demonstrate the power-law modifications are not necessary in the mimetic $F(R)$ case, and by appropriately choosing the mimetic potential and the Lagrange multiplier, it is possible to make the oscillations almost to vanish at the end of the matter domination era and during the late-time acceleration era. We examine the behavior of the dark energy equation of state parameter and of the total effective equation of state parameter as functions of the redshift and we compare the resulting picture with the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case. As we also show, the present day values of the dark energy equation of state parameter and of the total effective equation of state parameter are in better agreement with the observational data, in comparison to the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case. Finally, we study the evolution of the growth factor as a function of the redshift for all the mimetic models we shall use.

Gauss-Bonnet Gravitational Baryogenesis

In this letter we study some variant forms of gravitational baryogenesis by using higher order terms containing the partial derivative of the Gauss-Bonnet scalar coupled to the baryonic current. This scenario extends the well known theory that uses a similar coupling between the Ricci scalar and the baryonic current. One appealing feature of the scenario we study is that the predicted baryon asymmetry during a radiation domination era is non-zero. We calculate the baryon to entropy ratio for the Gauss-Bonnet term and by using the observational constraints we investigate which are the allowed forms of the $R+F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity controlling the evolution. Also we briefly discuss some alternative higher order terms that can generate a non-zero baryon asymmetry, even in the conformal invariance limit.
