Bouncing cosmology with future singularity from modified gravity

We investigate which Jordan frame $F(R)$ gravity can describe a Type IV singular bouncing cosmological evolution, with special emphasis given near the point at which the Type IV singularity occurs. The cosmological bounce is chosen in such a way so that the bouncing point coincides exactly with Type IV singularity point. The stability of the resulting $F(R)$ gravity is examined and in addition, we study the Einstein frame scalar-tensor theory counterpart of the resulting Jordan frame $F(R)$ gravity. Also, by assuming that the Jordan frame metric is chosen in such a way so that, when conformally transformed in the Einstein frame, it yields a quasi de Sitter or de Sitter Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, we study the observational indexes which turn out to be consistent with Planck 2015 data in the case of the Einstein frame scalar theory. Finally, we study the behavior of the effective equation of state corresponding to the Type IV singular bounce and after we compare the resulting picture with other bouncing cosmologies, we critically discuss the implications of our analysis.

Singular inflation from generalized equation of state fluids

We study models with a generalized inhomogeneous equation of state fluids, in the context of singular inflation, focusing to so-called Type IV singular evolution. In the simplest case, this cosmological fluid is described by an equation of state with constant $w$, and therefore a direct modification of this constant $w$ fluid, is achieved by using a generalized form of an equation of state. We investigate from which models with generalized phenomenological equation of state, a Type IV singular inflation can be generated and what the phenomenological implications of this singularity would be. We support our results with illustrative examples and we also study the impact of the Type IV singularities on the slow-roll parameters and on the observational inflationary indices, showing the consistency with Planck mission results. The unification of singular inflation with singular dark energy era for specific generalized fluids is also proposed.

A quantitative analysis of singular inflation with scalar-tensor and modified gravity

We provide a detailed quantitative description of singular inflation. Its close analogy with finite-time future singularity which is associated to dark energy era is described. Calling and classifying the singularities of such inflation as finite-time cosmological singularities we investigate their occurrence, with special emphasis on the Type IV singularity. The study is performed in the context of a general non-canonical scalar-tensor theory. In addition, the impact of finite time singularities on the slow-roll parameters is also investigated. Particularly, we study three cases, in which the singularity occurs during the inflationary era, at the end, and also we study the case that the singularity occurs much more later than inflation ends. Using the obtained slow-roll parameters, for each case, we calculate explicitly the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations $n_s$, the associated running of the spectral index $a_s$ and of the scalar-to-tensor ratio $r$ and compare the resulting values to the Planck and BICEP2 data. As we demonstrate, in some cases corresponding to the Type IV singularity, there might be the possibility of agreement with the observational data, when the singularity occurs at the end, or after inflation. However, absolute concordance of all observational indices is not achieved. On the contrary, if the singularity occurs during the inflationary era, this is catastrophic for the theory, since the observational indices become divergent. We also show how a Type IV singularity may be consistently accommodated in the Universe's late time evolution.

$Λ$CDM Bounce Cosmology without $Λ$CDM: the case of modified gravity

We provide an $F(R)$ gravity description of a $Λ$CDM bouncing model, without the need for matter fluids or for cosmological constant. As we explicitly demonstrate, the two cosmological eras that constitute the $Λ$CDM bouncing model, can be generated by $F(R)$ gravity which can lead to accelerating cosmologies. The resulting F(R) gravity has Einstein frame inflationary properties that have concordance to the latest Planck observational data. Both the $F(R)$ gravity stability properties are thoroughly investigated and also, the gravitational particle production, a feature necessary for the viability of the $Λ$CDM bounce scenario, is also addressed. As we will show, the $Λ$CDM bounce model can be successfully described by pure $F(R)$ gravity, with appealing phenomenological attributes, which we extensively discuss.

Nonperturbative models of quark stars in $f(R)$ gravity

Quark star models with realistic equation of state in nonperturbative $f(R)$ gravity are considered. The mass-radius relation for $f(R)=R+αR^2$ model is obtained. Considering scalar curvature $R$ as an independent function, one can find out, for each value of central density, the unique value of central curvature for which one has solutions with the required asymptotic $R\rightarrow 0$ for $r\rightarrow\infty$. In another words, one needs a fine-tuning for $R$ to achieve quark stars in $f(R)$ gravity. We consider also the analogue description in corresponding scalar-tensor gravity. The fine-tuning on $R$ is equivalent to the fine-tuning on the scalar field $ϕ$ in this description. For distant observers, the gravitational mass of the star increases with increasing $α$ ($α>0$) but the interpretation of this fact depends on frame where we work. Considering directly $f(R)$ gravity, one can say that increasing of mass occurs by the "gravitational sphere" outside the star with some "effective mass". On the other hand, in scalar-tensor theory, we also have a dilaton sphere (or "disphere") outside the star but its contribution to gravitational mass for distant observer is negligible. We show that it is possible to discriminate modified theories of gravity from General Relativity due to the gravitational redshift of the thermal spectrum emerging from the surface of the star.

Matter Bounce Loop Quantum Cosmology from $F(R)$ Gravity

Using the reconstruction method, we investigate which $F(R)$ theories, with or without the presence of matter fluids, can produce the matter bounce scenario of holonomy corrected Loop Quantum Cosmology. We focus our study in two limits of the cosmic time, the large cosmic time limit and the small cosmic time limit. For the former, we found that, in the presence of non-interacting and non-relativistic matter, the $F(R)$ gravity that reproduces the late time limit of the matter bounce solution is actually the Einstein-Hilbert gravity plus a power law term. In the early time limit, since it corresponds to large spacetime curvatures, assuming that the Jordan frame is described by a general metric that when it is conformally transformed to the Einstein frame, produces an accelerating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, we found explicitly the scalar field dependence on time. After demonstrating that the solution in the Einstein frame is indeed accelerating, we calculate the spectral index derived from the Einstein frame scalar-tensor counterpart theory of the $F(R)$ theory and compare it with the Planck experiment data. In order to implement the resulting picture, we embed the $F(R)$ gravity explicitly in a Loop Quantum Cosmology framework by introducing holonomy corrections to the $F(R)$ gravity. In this way, the resulting inflation picture corresponding to the $F(R)$ gravity can be corrected in order it coincides to some extent with the current experimental data.

Nearly Starobinsky inflation from modified gravity

We study inflation induced by (power-low) scalar curvature corrections to General Relativity. The class of inflationary scalar potentials $V(σ)\sim\exp[n\,σ]$, $n$ general parameter, is investigated in the Einsein frame and the corresponding actions in the Jordan frame are derived. We found the conditions for which these potentials are able to reproduce viable inflation according with the last cosmological data and lead to large scalar curvature corrections which emerge only at a mass scale larger than the Planck mass. Cosmological constant may appear or be set equal to zero in the Jordan frame action without changing the behaviour of the model during inflation. Moreover, polynomial corrections to General Relativity are analyzed in detail. When de Sitter space-time emerges as an exact solution of the models, it is necessary to use perturbative equations in the Jordan framework to study their dynamics during the inflation. In this case, we demonstrate that the Ricci scalar decreases after a correct amount of inflation, making the models consistent with the observable evolution of the universe.

Renormalization-group inflationary scalar electrodynamics and SU(5) scenarios confronted with Planck2013 and BICEP2 results

The possibility to construct inflationary models for the renormalization-group improved potentials corresponding to scalar electrodynamics and to $SU(2)$ and $SU(5)$ models is investigated. In all cases, the tree-level potential, which corresponds to the cosmological constant in the Einstein frame, is seen to be non-suitable for inflation. Rather than adding the Hilbert-Einstein term to the action, quantum corrections to the potential, coming from to the RG-equation, are included. The inflationary scenario is analyzed with unstable de Sitter solutions which correspond to positive values of the coupling function, only. We show that, for the finite $SU(2)$ model and $SU(2)$ gauge model, there are no de Sitter solutions suitable for inflation, unless exit from it occurs according to some weird, non-standard scenarios. Inflation is realized both for scalar electrodynamics and for $SU(5)$ RG-improved potentials, and the corresponding values of the coupling function are seen to be positive. It is shown that, for quite reasonable values of the parameters, the inflationary models obtained both from scalar electrodynamics and from the $SU(5)$ RG-improved potentials, are in good agreement with the most recent observational data coming from the Planck2013 and BICEP2 collaborations.

Trace-anomaly driven inflation in modified gravity and the BICEP2 result

We explore conformal-anomaly driven inflation in $F(R)$ gravity without invoking the scalar-tensor representation. We derive the stress-energy tensor of the quantum anomaly in the flat homogeneous and isotropic universe. We investigate a suitable toy model of exponential gravity plus the quantum contribution due to the conformal anomaly, which leads to the de Sitter solution. It is shown that in $F(R)$ gravity model, the curvature perturbations with its enough amplitude consistent with the observations are generated during inflation. We also evaluate the number of $e$-folds at the inflationary stage and the spectral index $n_\mathrm{s}$ of scalar modes of the curvature perturbations by analogy with scalar tensor theories, and compare them with the observational data. As a result, it is found that the Ricci scalar decreases during inflation and the standard evolution history of the universe is recovered at the small curvature regime. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that in our model, the tensor-to-scalar ratio of the curvature perturbations can be a finite value within the $68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$ error of the very recent result found by the BICEP2 experiment.

On $R+αR^2$ Loop Quantum Cosmology

Working in Einstein frame we introduce, in order to avoid singularities, holonomy corrections to the $f(R)=R+αR^2$ model. We perform a detailed analytical and numerical study when holonomy corrections are taken into account in both Jordan and Einstein frames obtaining, in Jordan frame, a dynamics which differs qualitatively, at early times, from the one of the original model. More precisely, when holonomy corrections are taken into account the universe is not singular, starting at early times in the contracting phase and bouncing to enter in the expanding one where, as in the original model, it inflates. This dynamics is completely different from the one obtained in the original $R+αR^2$ model, where the universe is singular at early times and never bounces. Moreover, we show that these holonomy corrections may lead to better predictions for the inflationary phase as compared with current observations.

Numerical solutions of the modified Lane-Emden equation in f(R)-gravity

The modified Lane-Emden equation for stellar hydrostatic equilibrium in f(R)-gravity is numerically solved by using an iterative procedure. Such an integro-differential equation can be obtained in the weak field limit approximation of f(R)-gravity by considering a suitable polytropic equation of state in the modified Poisson equation. The approach allows, in principle, to deal with still unexplored self-graviting systems that could account for exotic stellar structures that escape standard stellar theory.

The instabilities and (anti)-evaporation of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes in modified gravity

We investigate the future evolution of Nariai black hole which is extremal limit of Schwarzschild-de Sitter one in modified gravity. The perturbations equations around Nariai black hole are derived in static and cosmological patches for general $F(R)$-gravity. The analytical and numerical study of several realistic $F(R)$-models shows the occurence of rich variety of scenarios: instabilities, celebrated Hawking evaporation and anti-evaporation of black hole. The realization of specific scenario depends on the model under consideration. It is remarkable that the presence of such primordial black holes at current universe may indicate towards the modified gravity which supports the anti-evaporation as preferrable model. As some generalization we extend the study of Nariai black hole evolution to modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The corresponding perturbations equations turn out to be much more complicated than in the case of $F(R)$ gravity. For specific example of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity we demonstrate that Nariai solution maybe stable.

Fermionic Casimir densities in anti-de Sitter spacetime

The fermionic condensate and vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, for a massive fermionic field on the background of anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the geometry of two parallel boundaries with bag boundary conditions, are investigated. Vacuum expectation values, expressed as series involving the eigenvalues of the radial quantum number, are neatly decomposed into boundary-free, single-boundary-induced, and second-boundary-induced parts, with the help of the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. In this way, the renormalization procedure is very conveniently reduced to the one corresponding to boundary-free AdS spacetime. The boundary-induced contributions to the fermionic condensate and to the vacuum expectation value of the energy density are proven to be everywhere negative. The vacuum expectation values are exponentially suppressed at distances from the boundaries much larger than the curvature radius of the AdS space. Near the boundaries, effects related with the curvature of the background spacetime are shown to be subdominant and, to leading order, all known results for boundaries in the Minkowski bulk are recovered. Zeta function techniques are successfully used for the evaluation of the total vacuum energy in the region between the boundaries. It is proven that the resulting interaction forces between them are attractive and that, for large separations, they also decay exponentially. Finally, our results are extended and explicitly translated to fermionic Casimir densities in braneworld scenarios of Randall-Sundrum type.

Brane cosmology from observational surveys and its comparison with standard FRW cosmology

Several dark energy models on the brane are investigated. They are compared with corresponding theories in the frame of 4d Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. To constrain the parameters of the models considered, recent observational data, including SNIa apparent magnitude measurements, baryon acoustic oscillation results, Hubble parameter evolution data and matter density perturbations are used. Explicit formulas of the so-called {\it state-finder} parameters in teleparallel theories are obtained that could be useful to test these models and to establish a link between Loop Quantum Cosmology and Brane Cosmology. It is concluded that a joint analysis as the one developed here allows to estimate, in a very convenient way, possible deviation of the real universe cosmology from the standard Friedmann-Robertson-Walker one.

The universe evolution in exponential $F(R)$-gravity

A generic feature of viable exponential $F(R)$-gravity is investigated. An additional modification to stabilize the effective dark energy oscillations during matter era is proposed and applied to two viable models. An analysis on the future evolution of the universe is performed. Furthermore, a unified model for early and late-time acceleration is proposed and studied.

Cosmic history of viable exponential gravity: Equation of state oscillations and growth index from inflation to dark energy era

A generic feature of viable $F(R)$ gravity is investigated: It is demonstrated that during the matter dominated era the large frequency oscillations of the effective dark energy may influence the behavior of higher derivatives of the Hubble parameter with the risk to produce some singular unphysical solutions at high redshift. This behavior is explicitly analyzed for realistic $F(R)$ models, in particular, exponential gravity and a power form model. To stabilize such oscillations, we consider the additional modification of the models via a correction term which does not destroy the viability properties. A detailed analysis on the future evolution of the universe and the evolution history of the growth index of the matter density perturbations are performed. Furthermore, we explore two applications of exponential gravity to the inflationary scenario. We show how it is possible to obtain different numbers of $e$-folds during the early-time acceleration by making different choices of the model parameters in the presence of ultrarelativistic matter, which destabilizes inflation and eventually leads to the exit from the inflationary stage. We execute the numerical analysis of inflation in two viable exponential gravity models. It is proved that at the end of the inflation, the effective energy density and curvature of the universe decrease and thus a unified description between inflation and the $Λ$CDM-like dark energy dominated era can be realized.

Turbulence and Little Rip Cosmology

A variety of conditions is considered under which the cosmic dark fluid may be able to develop a future Big Rip or Little Rip singularity. Both one-component and two-component models are considered. In the last-mentioned case we present a way in which the fluid can be decomposed into two components, one non-turbulent (ideal) and one turbulent part, obeying two different equations of state. For the non-turbulent part, the thermodynamical parameter, commonly called w, is assumed to be less than -1 throughout. For the turbulent part, it turns out that it is sufficient that w{turb} lies in the quintessence region in order to lead to a singularity. Both Big Rip and Little Rip behaviour for dark energy are found. In the one-component case, we examine how the universe may develop from a viscous era with constant bulk viscosity into a turbulent era, the turbulence in effect protecting the universe from encountering the singularity at all. The equivalent description of the same cosmology in terms of inhomogeneous (imperfect) fluid is also presented.

Multiple $Λ$CDM cosmology with string landscape features and future singularities

Multiple $Λ$CDM cosmology is studied in a way that is formally a classical analog of the Casimir effect. Such cosmology corresponds to a time-dependent dark fluid model or, alternatively, to its scalar field presentation, and it motivated by the string landscape picture. The future evolution of the several dark energy models constructed within the scheme is carefully investigated. It turns out to be almost always possible to choose the parameters in the models so that they match the most recent and accurate astronomical values. To this end, several universes are presented which mimick (multiple) $Λ$CDM cosmology but exhibit Little Rip, asymptotically de Sitter, or Type I, II, III, and IV finite-time singularity behavior in the far future, with disintegration of all bound objects in the cases of Big Rip, Little Rip and Pseudo-Rip cosmologies.
