Spectral Clustering for Jet Reconstruction

We present a new approach to jet definition alternative to clustering methods, such as the anti-$k_T$ scheme, that exploit kinematic data directly. Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $gg \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{40~\rm GeV}H_{40~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, $gg \rightarrow H_{500~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV}H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $gg, q\bar{q} \rightarrow t\bar{t} \rightarrow b\bar{b}W^+W^- \rightarrow b\bar{b}jjlνl$ events from Monte Carlo (MC) samples, specifically, in reconstructing the relevant final states, to that of the anti-$k_T$ algorithm. Finally, we show that the results for spectral clustering are obtained without any change in the parameter settings of the algorithm, unlike the anti-$k_T$ case, which requires the cone size to be adjusted to the physics process under study.

Spectral Clustering for Jet Physics

Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $qq\to H_{125\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow H_{40\,\text{GeV}} H_{40\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow b \bar{b} b \bar{b}$, $qq\to H_{500\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow H_{125\,\text{GeV}} H_{125\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow b \bar{b} b \bar{b}$ and $gg,q\bar q\to t\bar t\to b\bar b W^+W^-\to b\bar b jj \ellν_\ell$ events from Monte Carlo (MC) samples, specifically, in reconstructing the relevant final states, to that of the anti-kT algorithm. Finally, we show that the results for spectral clustering are obtained without any change in the parameter settings of the algorithm, unlike the anti-kT case, which requires the cone size to be adjusted to the physics process under study.

N-species stochastic models with boundaries and quadratic algebras

Stationary probability distributions for stochastic processes on linear chains with closed or open ends are obtained using the matrix product Ansatz. The matrices are representations of some quadratic algebras. The algebras and the types of representations considered depend on the boundary conditions. In the language of quantum chains we obtain the ground state of N-state quantum chains with free boundary conditions or with non-diagonal boundary terms at one or both ends. In contrast to problems involving the Bethe Ansatz, we do not have a general framework for arbitrary N which when specialized, gives the known results for N=2; in fact, the N=2 and N>2 cases appear to be very different.

Strings, paths, and standard tableaux

For the vacuum sectors of regime-III ABF models, we observe that two sets of combinatorial objects: the strings which parametrize the row-to-row transfer matrix eigenvectors, and the paths which parametrize the corner transfer matrix eigenvectors, can both be expressed in terms of the same set of standard tableaux. Furthermore, the momenta of the strings, the energies of the paths, and the charges of the tableaux are such that there is a weight-preserving bijection between the two sets of eigenvectors, wherein the tableaux play an interpolating role. This bijection is so natural, that we conjecture that it exists in general.

Virasoro Characters from Bethe Equations for the Critical Ferromagnetic Three-State Potts Model

We obtain new fermionic sum representations for the Virasoro characters of the confromal field theory describing the ferromagnetic three-state Potts spin chain. These arise from the fermionic quasi-particle excitations derived from the Bethe equations for the eigenvalues of the hamiltonian. In the conformal scaling limit, the Bethe equations provide a description of the spectrum in terms of one genuine quasi-particle, and two ``ghost'' excitations with a limited microscopic momentum range. This description is reflected in the structure of the character formulas, and suggests a connection with the integrable perturbation of dimensions (2/3,2/3)$^+$ which breaks the $S_3$ symmetry of the conformal field theory down to $Z_2$.

Quasi-Particles, Conformal Field Theory, and $q$-Series

We review recent results concerning the representation of conformal field theory characters in terms of fermionic quasi-particle excitations, and describe in detail their construction in the case of the integrable three-state Potts chain. These fermionic representations are $q$-series which are generalizations of the sums occurring in the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
